We introduce a novel discretization technique for both elliptic and parabolic fractional diffusion problems based on double exponential quadrature formulas and the Riesz-Dunford functional calculus. Compared to related schemes, the new method provides faster convergence with fewer parameters that need to be adjusted to the problem. The scheme takes advantage of any additional smoothness in the problem without requiring a-priori knowledge to tune parameters appropriately. We prove rigorous convergence results for both, the case of finite regularity data as well as for data in certain Gevrey-type classes. We confirm our findings with numerical tests.
In this article, quadrature rules for the efficient computation of the stiffness matrix for the fractional Laplacian in three dimensions are presented. These rules are based on the Duffy transformation, which is a common tool for singularity removal. Here, this transformation is adapted to the needs of the fractional Laplacian in three dimensions. The integrals resulting from this Duffy transformation are regular integrals over less-dimensional domains. We present bounds on the number of Gauss points to guarantee error estimates which are of the same order of magnitude as the finite element er…

The convolution quadrature theory is a systematic approach to analyse the approximation of the Riemann-Liouville fractional operator $I^α$ at node $x_{n}$. In this paper, we develop the shifted convolution quadrature ($SCQ$) theory which generalizes the theory of convolution quadrature by introducing a shifted parameter $θ$ to cover as many numerical schemes that approximate the operator $I^α$ with an integer convergence rate as possible. The constraint on the parameter $θ$ is discussed in detail and the phenomenon of superconvergence for some schemes is examined from a new perspective. For so…
In this paper, we introduce and analyze arbitrarily high-order quadrature rules for evaluating the two-dimensional singular integrals of the forms \begin{align} I_{i,j} = \int_{\mathbb{R}^2}ϕ(x)\frac{x_ix_j}{|x|^{2+α}} \d x, \quad 0< α< 2 \end{align} where $i,j\in\{1,2\}$ and $ϕ\in C_c^N$ for $N\geq 2$. This type of singular integrals and its quadrature rule appear in the numerical discretization of fractional Laplacian in non-local Fokker-Planck Equations in 2D. The quadrature rules are trapezoidal rules equipped with correction weights for points around singularity. We prove the order of con…
Boundary value problem for a fractional power of an elliptic operator is considered. An integral representation by means of a standard solution problem for parabolic equations is used to solve such problems. Quadrature generalized Gauss-Laguerre formulas are constructed. We examine the effect of key parameters on the accuracy of the approximate solution: the number of nodes of the quadrature and fractional power of the operator. Computational experiments were performed to model two-dimensional problem with a fractional power of an elliptic operator.
Rational approximations of functions with singularities can converge at a root-exponential rate if the poles are exponentially clustered. We begin by reviewing this effect in minimax, least-squares, and AAA approximations on intervals and complex domains, conformal mapping, and the numerical solution of Laplace, Helmholtz, and biharmonic equations by the "lightning" method. Extensive and wide-ranging numerical experiments are involved. We then present further experiments showing that in all of these applications, it is advantageous to use exponential clustering whose density on a logarithmic s…
The well-known Caputo fractional derivative and the corresponding Caputo fractional integral occur naturally in many equations that model physical phenomena under inhomogeneous media. The relationship between the two fractional terms can be readily obtained by applying the Laplace transform to a given equation. We seek to numerically approximate Caputo fractional integrals using a Taylor series expansion for convolution integrals. This naturally extends into being able to approximate convolution integrals for a wider class of convolution integral kernels $K(t-s)$. One of the main advantages un…

We consider the numerical approximation of the spectral fractional diffusion problem based on the so called Balakrishnan representation. The latter consists of an improper integral approximated via quadratures. At each quadrature point, a reaction-diffusion problem must be approximated and is the method bottle neck. In this work, we propose to reduce the computational cost using a reduced basis strategy allowing for a fast evaluation of the reaction-diffusion problems. The reduced basis does not depend on the fractional power $s$ for $0<s_{\min}\leq s \leq s_{\max}<1$. It is built offline once…
We consider the computation of the matrix logarithm by using numerical quadrature. The efficiency of numerical quadrature depends on the integrand and the choice of quadrature formula. The Gauss--Legendre quadrature has been conventionally employed; however, the convergence could be slow for ill-conditioned matrices. This effect may stem from the rapid change of the integrand values. To avoid such situations, we focus on the double exponential formula, which has been developed to address integrands with endpoint singularity. In order to utilize the double exponential formula, we must determine…
We present quadrature schemes to calculate matrices, where the so-called modified Hilbert transformation is involved. These matrices occur as temporal parts of Galerkin finite element discretizations of parabolic or hyperbolic problems when the modified Hilbert transformation is used for the variational setting. This work provides the calculation of these matrices to machine precision for arbitrary polynomial degrees and non-uniform meshes. The proposed quadrature schemes are based on weakly singular integral representations of the modified Hilbert transformation. First, these weakly singular …
In this article, we propose an algorithm for approximating the action of $φ-$functions of matrices against vectors, which is a key operation in exponential time integrators. In particular, we consider matrices with Kronecker sum structure, which arise from problems admitting a tensor product representation. The method is based on quadrature approximations of the integral form of the $φ-$functions combined with a scaling and modified squaring method. Owing to the Kronecker sum representation, only actions of 1D matrix exponentials are needed at each quadrature node and assembly of the full matr…
In this paper, we consider the strong convergence of the time-space fractional diffusion equation driven by fractional Gaussion noise with Hurst index $H\in(\frac{1}{2},1)$. A sharp regularity estimate of the mild solution and the numerical scheme constructed by finite element method for integral fractional Laplacian and backward Euler convolution quadrature for Riemann-Liouville time fractional derivative are proposed. With the help of inverse Laplace transform and fractional Ritz projection, we obtain the accurate error estimates in time and space. Finally, our theoretical results are accomp…
The discontinuous Galerkin dG method provides a robust and flexible technique for the time integration of fractional diffusion problems. However, a practical implementation uses coefficients defined by integrals that are not easily evaluated. We describe specialised quadrature techniques that efficiently maintain the overall accuracy of the dG method. In addition, we observe in numerical experiments that known superconvergence properties of dG time stepping for classical diffusion problems carry over in a modified form to the fractional-order setting.
A finite element scheme for an entirely fractional Allen-Cahn equation with non-smooth initial data is introduced and analyzed. In the proposed nonlocal model, the Caputo fractional in-time derivative and the fractional Laplacian replace the standard local operators. Piecewise linear finite elements and convolution quadratures are the basic tools involved in the presented numerical method. Error analysis and implementation issues are addressed together with the needed results of regularity for the continuous model. Also, the asymptotic behavior of solutions, for a vanishing fractional paramete…
Roundoff error problems have occurred frequently in interpolation methods of time-fractional equations, which can lead to undesirable results such as the failure of optimal convergence. These problems are essentially caused by catastrophic cancellations. Currently, a feasible way to avoid these cancellations is using the Gauss--Kronrod quadrature to approximate the integral formulas of coefficients rather than computing the explicit formulas directly for example in the L2-type methods. This nevertheless increases computational cost and arises additional integration errors. In this work, a new …
Here, we provide a unified framework for numerical analysis of stochastic nonlinear fractional diffusion equation driven by fractional Gaussian noise with Hurst index $H\in(0,1)$. A novel estimate of the second moment of the stochastic integral with respect to fractional Brownian motion is constructed, which greatly contributes to the regularity analyses of the solution in time and space for $H\in(0,1)$. Then we use spectral Galerkin method and backward Euler convolution quadrature to discretize the fractional Laplacian and Riemann-Liouville fractional derivative, respectively. The sharp error…
We develop a rapid and accurate contour method for the solution of time-fractional PDEs. The method inverts the Laplace transform via an optimised stable quadrature rule, suitable for infinite-dimensional operators, whose error decreases like $\exp(-cN/\log(N))$ for $N$ quadrature points. The method is parallisable, avoids having to resolve singularities of the solution as $t\downarrow 0$, and avoids the large memory consumption that can be a challenge for time-stepping methods applied to time-fractional PDEs. The ODEs resulting from quadrature are solved using adaptive sparse spectral methods…
In this work, we are interested in building the fully discrete scheme for stochastic fractional diffusion equation driven by fractional Brownian sheet which is temporally and spatially fractional with Hurst parameters $H_{1}, H_{2} \in(0,\frac{1}{2}]$. We first provide the regularity of the solution. Then we employ the Wong-Zakai approximation to regularize the rough noise and discuss the convergence of the approximation. Next, the finite element and backward Euler convolution quadrature methods are used to discretize spatial and temporal operators for the obtained regularized equation, and th…
