Self-supervised detection and segmentation of foreground objects aims for accuracy without annotated training data. However, existing approaches predominantly rely on restrictive assumptions on appearance and motion. For scenes with dynamic activities and camera motion, we propose a multi-camera framework in which geometric constraints are embedded in the form of multi-view consistency during training via coarse 3D localization in a voxel grid and fine-grained offset regression. In this manner, we learn a joint distribution of proposals over multiple views. At inference time, our method operates on single RGB images. We outperform state-of-the-art techniques both on images that visually depart from those of standard benchmarks and on those of the classical Human3.6M dataset.

A new segmentation fusion method is proposed that ensembles the output of several segmentation algorithms applied on a remotely sensed image. The candidate segmentation sets are processed to achieve a consensus segmentation using a stochastic optimization algorithm based on the Filtered Stochastic BOEM (Best One Element Move) method. For this purpose, Filtered Stochastic BOEM is reformulated as a segmentation fusion problem by designing a new distance learning approach. The proposed algorithm also embeds the computation of the optimum number of clusters into the segmentation fusion problem.
Medical image segmentation requires consensus ground truth segmentations to be derived from multiple expert annotations. A novel approach is proposed that obtains consensus segmentations from experts using graph cuts (GC) and semi supervised learning (SSL). Popular approaches use iterative Expectation Maximization (EM) to estimate the final annotation and quantify annotator's performance. Such techniques pose the risk of getting trapped in local minima. We propose a self consistency (SC) score to quantify annotator consistency using low level image features. SSL is used to predict missing anno…

The core of our approach, Pixel Consensus Voting, is a framework for instance segmentation based on the Generalized Hough transform. Pixels cast discretized, probabilistic votes for the likely regions that contain instance centroids. At the detected peaks that emerge in the voting heatmap, backprojection is applied to collect pixels and produce instance masks. Unlike a sliding window detector that densely enumerates object proposals, our method detects instances as a result of the consensus among pixel-wise votes. We implement vote aggregation and backprojection using native operators of a con…

Hand segmentation is a crucial task in first-person vision. Since first-person images exhibit strong bias in appearance among different environments, adapting a pre-trained segmentation model to a new domain is required in hand segmentation. Here, we focus on appearance gaps for hand regions and backgrounds separately. We propose (i) foreground-aware image stylization and (ii) consensus pseudo-labeling for domain adaptation of hand segmentation. We stylize source images independently for the foreground and background using target images as style. To resolve the domain shift that the stylizatio…

In order to leverage and profit from unlabelled data, semi-supervised frameworks for semantic segmentation based on consistency training have been proven to be powerful tools to significantly improve the performance of purely supervised segmentation learning. However, the consensus principle behind consistency training has at least one drawback, which we identify in this paper: imbalanced label distributions within the data. To overcome the limitations of standard consistency training, we propose a novel semi-supervised framework for semantic segmentation, introducing additional losses based o…
Anomaly segmentation is a crucial task for safety-critical applications, such as autonomous driving in urban scenes, where the goal is to detect out-of-distribution (OOD) objects with categories which are unseen during training. The core challenge of this task is how to distinguish hard in-distribution samples from OOD samples, which has not been explicitly discussed yet. In this paper, we propose a novel and simple approach named Consensus Synergizes with Memory (CosMe) to address this challenge, inspired by the psychology finding that groups perform better than individuals on memory tasks. Parts represent a basic unit of geometric and semantic similarity across different objects. We argue that part knowledge should be composable beyond the observed object classes. Towards this, we present 3D Compositional Zero-shot Learning as a problem of part generalization from seen to unseen object classes for semantic segmentation. We provide a structured study through benchmarking the task with the proposed Compositional-PartNet dataset. This dataset is created by processing the original PartNet to maximize part overlap across different objects. The existing point cloud part segmentation m…
Dynamic texture (DT) segmentation, and video processing in general, is currently widely dominated by methods based on deep neural networks that require the deployment of a large number of layers. Although this parametric approach has shown superior performances for the dynamic texture segmentation, all current deep learning methods suffer from a significant main weakness related to the lack of a sufficient reference annotation to train models and to make them functional. This study explores the unsupervised segmentation approach that can be used in the absence of training data to segment new v…

Semantic segmentation networks adopt transfer learning from image classification networks which occurs a shortage of spatial context information. For this reason, we propose Spatial Context Memoization (SpaM), a bypassing branch for spatial context by retaining the input dimension and constantly communicating its spatial context and rich semantic information mutually with the backbone network. Multi-scale context information for semantic segmentation is crucial for dealing with diverse sizes and shapes of target objects in the given scene. Conventional multi-scale context scheme adopts multipl…

We present a data segmentation method based on a first-order density-induced consensus protocol. We provide a mathematically rigorous analysis of the consensus model leading to the stopping criteria of the data segmentation algorithm. To illustrate our method, the algorithm is applied to two-dimensional shape datasets and selected images from Berkeley Segmentation Dataset. The method can be seen as an augmentation of classical clustering techniques for multimodal feature space, such as DBSCAN. It showcases a curious connection between data clustering and collective behavior.

A Semi-supervised Segmentation Fusion algorithm is proposed using consensus and distributed learning. The aim of Unsupervised Segmentation Fusion (USF) is to achieve a consensus among different segmentation outputs obtained from different segmentation algorithms by computing an approximate solution to the NP problem with less computational complexity. Semi-supervision is incorporated in USF using a new algorithm called Semi-supervised Segmentation Fusion (SSSF). In SSSF, side information about the co-occurrence of pixels in the same or different segments is formulated as the constraints of a c…
In many applications, the pairwise constraint is a kind of weaker supervisory information which can be collected easily. The constraint propagation has been proved to be a success of exploiting such side-information. In recent years, some methods of multi-view constraint propagation have been proposed. However, the problem of reasonably fusing different views remains unaddressed. In this paper, we present a method dubbed Consensus Prior Constraint Propagation (CPCP), which can provide the prior knowledge of the robustness of each data instance and its neighborhood. With the robustness generate…

Image stitching for two images without a global transformation between them is notoriously difficult. In this paper, noticing the importance of planar structure under perspective geometry, we propose a new image stitching method which stitches images by allowing for the alignment of a set of matched dominant planar regions. Clearly different from previous methods resorting to plane segmentation, the key to our approach is to utilize rich semantic information directly from RGB images to extract planar image regions with a deep Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). We specifically design a new mod…

Marking tumors and organs is a challenging task suffering from both inter- and intra-observer variability. The literature quantifies observer variability by generating consensus among multiple experts when they mark the same image. Automatically building consensus contours to establish quality assurance for image segmentation is presently absent in the clinical practice. As the \emph{big data} becomes more and more available, techniques to access a large number of existing segments of multiple experts becomes possible. Fast algorithms are, hence, required to facilitate the search for similar c…

Face segmentation is the task of densely labeling pixels on the face according to their semantics. While current methods place an emphasis on developing sophisticated architectures, use conditional random fields for smoothness, or rather employ adversarial training, we follow an alternative path towards robust face segmentation and parsing. Occlusions, along with other parts of the face, have a proper structure that needs to be propagated in the model during training. Unlike state-of-the-art methods that treat face segmentation as an independent pixel prediction problem, we argue instead that …

Hippocampus segmentation plays a key role in diagnosing various brain disorders such as Alzheimer's disease, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, cancer, depression and others. Nowadays, segmentation is still mainly performed manually by specialists. Segmentation done by experts is considered to be a gold-standard when evaluating automated methods, buts it is a time consuming and arduos task, requiring specialized personnel. In recent years, efforts have been made to achieve reliable automated segmentation. For years the best performing authomatic methods were multi atlas based with around 80-85% Dic…

Both generative learning and discriminative learning have recently witnessed remarkable progress using Deep Neural Networks (DNNs). For structured input synthesis and structured output prediction problems (e.g., layout-to-image synthesis and image semantic segmentation respectively), they often are studied separately. This paper proposes deep consensus learning (DCL) for joint layout-to-image synthesis and weakly-supervised image semantic segmentation. The former is realized by a recently proposed LostGAN approach, and the latter by introducing an inference network as the third player joining …
Range-view based LiDAR segmentation methods are attractive for practical applications due to their direct inheritance from efficient 2D CNN architectures. In literature, most range-view based methods follow the per-pixel classification paradigm. Recently, in the image segmentation domain, another paradigm formulates segmentation as a mask-classification problem and has achieved remarkable performance. This raises an interesting question: can the mask-classification paradigm benefit the range-view based LiDAR segmentation and achieve better performance than the counterpart per-pixel paradigm? T…

We present MVMO (Multi-View, Multi-Object dataset): a synthetic dataset of 116,000 scenes containing randomly placed objects of 10 distinct classes and captured from 25 camera locations in the upper hemisphere. MVMO comprises photorealistic, path-traced image renders, together with semantic segmentation ground truth for every view. Unlike existing multi-view datasets, MVMO features wide baselines between cameras and high density of objects, which lead to large disparities, heavy occlusions and view-dependent object appearance. Single view semantic segmentation is hindered by self and inter-obj…

We address the problem of novel view synthesis (NVS) from a few sparse source view images. Conventional image-based rendering methods estimate scene geometry and synthesize novel views in two separate steps. However, erroneous geometry estimation will decrease NVS performance as view synthesis highly depends on the quality of estimated scene geometry. In this paper, we propose an end-to-end NVS framework to eliminate the error propagation issue. To be specific, we construct a volume under the target view and design a source-view visibility estimation (SVE) module to determine the visibility of…
Segmentation of images is a long-standing challenge in medical AI. This is mainly due to the fact that training a neural network to perform image segmentation requires a significant number of pixel-level annotated data, which is often unavailable. To address this issue, we propose a semi-supervised image segmentation technique based on the concept of multi-view learning. In contrast to the previous art, we introduce an adversarial form of dual-view training and employ a critic to formulate the learning problem in multi-view training as a min-max problem. Thorough quantitative and qualitative e…

3D human pose estimation is frequently seen as the task of estimating 3D poses relative to the root body joint. Alternatively, we propose a 3D human pose estimation method in camera coordinates, which allows effective combination of 2D annotated data and 3D poses and a straightforward multi-view generalization. To that end, we cast the problem as a view frustum space pose estimation, where absolute depth prediction and joint relative depth estimations are disentangled. Final 3D predictions are obtained in camera coordinates by the inverse camera projection. Based on this, we also present a con…

Synthesizing novel views of dynamic humans from stationary monocular cameras is a specialized but desirable setup. This is particularly attractive as it does not require static scenes, controlled environments, or specialized capture hardware. In contrast to techniques that exploit multi-view observations, the problem of modeling a dynamic scene from a single view is significantly more under-constrained and ill-posed. In this paper, we introduce Neural Motion Consensus Flow (MoCo-Flow), a representation that models dynamic humans in stationary monocular cameras using a 4D continuous time-varian…

Learning with noisy-labels has become an important research topic in computer vision where state-of-the-art (SOTA) methods explore: 1) prediction disagreement with co-teaching strategy that updates two models when they disagree on the prediction of training samples; and 2) sample selection to divide the training set into clean and noisy sets based on small training loss. However, the quick convergence of co-teaching models to select the same clean subsets combined with relatively fast overfitting of noisy labels may induce the wrong selection of noisy label samples as clean, leading to an inev…

The ability to perform semantic segmentation in real-time capable applications with limited hardware is of great importance. One such application is the interpretation of the visual bird's-eye view, which requires the semantic segmentation of the four omnidirectional camera images. In this paper, we present an efficient semantic segmentation that sets new standards in terms of runtime and hardware requirements. Our two main contributions are the decrease of the runtime by parallelizing the ArgMax layer and the reduction of hardware requirements by applying the channel pruning method to the ENe…
