The correlation between ex situ electronic conductivity, oxygen vacancy content, flat-band potential (Efb), and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity for a wide range of perovskite compositions are investigated experimentally and theoretically. It is found that all of these parameters can affect the OER activity; however, none of them alone play a crucial role in determining the electrocatalytic activity. The correlation of one single physicochemical property with the OER activity always presents deviation points, indicating that a limitation does exist for such 2-dimensional correlations. Nevertheless, these deviations can be explained considering other physicochemical properties and their correlation with the OER activity. Hence, this work aims in simultaneously linking the OER activity with several physicochemical materials properties. The concept of the OER/multidescriptor relationship represents a significant advancement in the search and design of highly active oxygen evolution catalysts, in the quest for efficient anodes in water electrolyzers.
The list of possible commensurate phases obtained from the parent tetragonal phase of perovskites by allowing the tilting of octahedra of oxygen ions is reexamined. It is found that many structures allowed by symmetry are not consistent with the constraint of very rigid octahedra.
Perovskites with fast oxygen ion conduction can enable technologies like solid oxide fuel cells. One component of fast oxygen ion conduction is low oxygen migration barrier. Here we apply ab initio methods on over 40 perovskites to produce a database of oxygen migration barriers ranging from 0.2 to 1.6 eV. Mining the database revealed that systems with low barriers also have low metal-oxygen bond strength, as measured by oxygen vacancy formation energy and oxygen p-band center energy. These correlations provide a powerful descriptor for the development of new oxygen ion conductors and may expl…
An analytical result has been obtained for the value of the dynamical charge necessary for calculations of oxygen vacancy kinetics in dielectric perovskite-type crystals. It is shown by using the Berry phase analysis that this charge equals the nominal charge of the vacancy: for example, for the double charged state, it is 2; a neutral vacancy has the zero charge.
Transition-metal perovskite oxides constitute a series of functional material systems for electronics, catalysis and energy-conversion processes, in which oxygen migration and evolution play a key role. However, the stable metal-oxygen (M-O) bond forms large energy barrier inhibiting ion diffusion. Therefore, seeking efficient and facile approaches to accelerate oxygen kinetics has become a significant issue. Here, the interaction (interfacial charge transfer and cooperative bonding) between noble metal (Pt, Ag) and perovskites oxide (SrCoO3-delta) is employed to weaken (M-O) bond and decrease…
Electronic structure descriptors are computationally efficient quantities used to construct qualitative correlations for a variety of properties. In particular, the oxygen p-band center has been used to guide material discovery and fundamental understanding of an array of perovskite compounds for use in catalyzing the oxygen reduction and evolution reactions. However, an assessment of the effectiveness of the oxygen p-band center at predicting key measures of perovskite catalytic activity has not been made, and would be highly beneficial to guide future predictions and codify best practices. H…
Strain is known to greatly influence low temperature oxygen electrocatalysis on noble metal films, leading to significant enhancements in bifunctional activity essential for fuel cells and metal-air batteries. However, its catalytic impact on transition metal oxide thin films, such as perovskites, is not widely understood. Here, we epitaxially strain the conducting perovskite LaNiO3 to systematically determine its influence on both the oxygen reduction and oxygen evolution reaction. Uniquely, we found that compressive strain could significantly enhance both reactions, yielding a bifunctional c…
Using first-principles density functional theory calculations, we discover an anomalously large bi-axial strain-induced octahedral rotation axis reorientation in orthorhombic perovskites with tendency towards rhombohedral symmetry. The transition between crystallographically equivalent (isosymmetric) structures with different octahedral rotation magnitudes originates from strong strain--octahedral rotation coupling available to perovskites and the energetic hierarchy among competing octahedral tilt patterns. By elucidating these criteria, we suggest many functional perovskites would exhibit th…
Oxygen vacancies in transition metal oxides facilitate catalysis critical for energy storage and generation. However, it has proven elusive to promote vacancies at the lower temperatures required for operation in devices such as metal-air batteries and portable fuel cells. Here, we use thin films of the perovskite-based strontium cobaltite (SrCoOx) to show that epitaxial strain is a powerful tool towards manipulating the oxygen content under conditions consistent with the oxygen evolution reaction, yielding increasingly oxygen deficient states in an environment where the cobaltite would normal…
Asceding interest of the scientific community in layered hybrid halide perovskites (LHHPs) as materials for innovative photovoltaic and optoelectronic applications led to unprecedented expansion of this family of compounds, reaching now several hundred refined structures. Despite the unique structural diversity of LHHPs, traditional approaches of describing their structures, such as dividing into Dion-Jacobson (DJ) or Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) phases for mostt structures are ambiguous and unquantifiable. Here, we introduced a quantitative layer shift factor (LSF) for a univocal classification and…
Unraveling a descriptor that is correlated with catalytic reactivity is essential for fast screening for the optimal catalysts for a given catalytic reaction. Herein, we propose bond-derived orbitalwise coordination number ($\overline{CN}^α$, $α$= $s$ or $d$) as a simple and accurate descriptor used for transition metal (TM) oxides that takes into account both geometrical and electronic structures around active sites, and avoids excessive computation burden. This descriptor has a strong scaling relation with the activity in oxygen electrochemistry, enabling us to readily screen for the optimal…
We present an aberration corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (ac-STEM) analysis of the perovskite (LaFeO3) and pyrochlore (Yb2Ti2O7 and Pr2Zr2O7) oxides and demonstrate that both the shape and contrast of visible atomic columns in annular dark-field (ADF) images are sensitive to the presence of nearby atoms of low atomic number (e.g. oxygen). We show that point defects (e.g. oxygen vacancies), which are invisible - or difficult to observe due to limited sensitivity - in X-ray and neutron diffraction measurements, are the origin of the complex magnetic ground state of pyrochlore…
Symbolic regression (SR) is an emerging method for building analytical formulas to find models that best fit data sets. Here, SR was used to guide the design of new oxide perovskite catalysts with improved oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activities. An unprecedentedly simple descriptor, μ/t, where μ and t are the octahedral and tolerance factors, respectively, was identified, which accelerated the discovery of a series of new oxide perovskite catalysts with improved OER activity. We successfully synthesized five new oxide perovskites and characterized their OER activities. Remarkably, four of …
Perovskite structured transition metal oxides are important technological materials for catalysis and solid oxide fuel cell applications. Their functionality often depends on oxygen diffusivity and mobility through complex oxide heterostructures, which can be significantly impacted by structural and chemical modifications, such as doping. Further, when utilized within electrochemical cells, interfacial reactions with other components (e.g. Ni- and Cr-based alloy electrodes and interconnects) can influence the perovskite's reactivity and ion transport, leading to complex dependencies that are d…
Halide perovskites, with prototype cubic phase ABX3, undergo various phase transitions accompanied by rigid rotations of corner-sharing BX6 octahedra. Using first-principles density functional theory calculations, we have performed a comprehensive investigation of all the possible octahedral tilting in eighteen halide perovskites ABX3 (A = Cs, Rb, K; B= Pb, Sn; X= I, Br, Cl) and found that the stabilization energies i.e. energy differences between cubic and the most stable tilted phases, are linearly correlated with tolerance factor t. Moreover, the tilt energies i.e. energy differences betwee…
Oxygen vacancy formation energies play a major role in the electric field assisted abnormal grain growth of technologically relevant polycrystalline perovskite phases. The underlying effect on the atomic scale is assumed to be a redistribution of cationic and anionic point defects between grain boundaries and the bulk interior regions of the grains due to different defect formation energies in the structurally different regions, accompanied by the formation of space charge zones. Using atomistic calculations based on classical interatomic potentials, we derive and discuss optimized structures …
Oxygen octahedral distortions including tilts/rotations, deformations and off-centering in (layered) perovskites play the key role in their numerous functional properties. At the polar-centrosymmetric phase boundary in bi-layered perovskite Ca3-xSrxTi2O7 with x~1, we found the presence of abundant topological Z8 vortex-antivortex pairs, associated with four oxygen octahedral tilts at domains and another four different oxygen octahedral tilts at domain boundaries. Our discovery opens a new revenue to unveil topological defects associated with various types of oxygen octahedral distortions.
We use first-principles methods to investigate the effects of collective lattice excitations on the formation of oxygen vacancies in perovskite thin films. We find that phonons play a crucial role on the strain-mediated control of defect chemistry at finite temperatures. In particular, zero-temperature oxygen vacancy formation trends deduced as a function of epitaxial strain can be fully reversed near room temperature. Our first-principles calculations evidence a direct link between the lattice contribution to the oxygen vacancy free energy and the volume expansion that the system undergoes wh…

We present a systematic first-principles study of the structural and vibrational properties of perovskite-structure EuTiO3. Our calculated phonon spectrum of the high-symmetry cubic structural prototype shows strong M- and R-point instabilities, indicating a tendency to symmetry-lowering structural deformations composed of rotations and tilts of the oxygen octahedra. Subsequent explicit study of 14 different octahedral tilt-patterns showed that the I4/mcm, Imma, and R\bar{3}c structures, all with antiferrodistortive rotations of the octahedra, have significantly lower total energy than the pro…
Interface engineering in perovskite oxide superlattices has developed into a flourishing field, enabling not only further tuning of the exceptional properties, but also giving access to emergent physical phenomena. Here, we reveal a new mechanism for enhancing the electric polarization by the interface-induced oxygen octahedral tilts in BaTiO3/CaTiO3 superlattices. By combining a novel genetic algorithm with density functional theory (DFT), we predict that the true ground states in 1:1 and 2:2 BaTiO3/CaTiO3 superlattices grown on SrTiO3 adopt Pc symmetry with a large proper electric polarizati…
We investigated SrFeO$_{3-x}$ thin films on a SrTiO$_3$ (001) substrate prepared via pulsed laser epitaxy using an optical spectroscopy technique. The oxygen vacancy level ($x$) was controlled by post-annealing processes at different oxygen partial pressures. We achieved a brownmillerite(BM) structure at $x =$ 0.5 and observed the evolution of the crystal structure from BM into perovskite(PV) as the oxygen concentration increased. We observed the evolution of infrared-active phonons with respect to the oxygen concentration, which was closely related to the structural evolution observed via X-r…

It is unmistakably paradoxical that the weakest point of the photoactive organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite is its instability against light. Why and how perovskites break down under light irradiation and what happens at the atomistic level during the degradation still remains unanswered. In this paper, we revealed the fundamental origin and mechanism for irreversible degradation of hybrid perovskite materials from our new experimental results and ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations. We found that the photo-generated charges trapped along the grain boundaries of the perovskite cry…
La1-xSrxCo0.25Fe0.75O3-delta is known as one of the best cathode materials for permeation membranes and solid oxide fuel cells. Optimization of its chemical composition is a challenging problem. One of the key properties is concentration of oxygen vacancies, controlled by their formation energies. Ab initio calculations were employed in order to study the formation of oxygen vacancies in La1-xSrxCo0.25Fe0.75O3-delta perovskites by varying the Sr content from x = 12.5% to 50%. The formation energies were obtained for different stoichiometries as functions of temperature and oxygen partial press…
We use first-principles calculations based on density functional theory to investigate the interplay between oxygen vacancies, A-site cation size / tolerance factor, epitaxial strain, ferroelectricity and magnetism in the perovskite manganite series, AMnO3 (A=Ca2+, Sr2+, Ba2+). We find that, as expected, increasing the volume through either chemical pressure or tensile strain generally lowers the formation energy of neutral oxygen vacancies consistent with their established tendency to expand the lattice. Increased volume also favors polar distortions, both because competing rotations of the o…
Perovskite oxynitride photocatalysts were reported by experiment to evolve small amounts of N$_2$ due to the self-oxidation of nitrogen ions by photo-generated holes. The N$_2$ evolution rate was observed to decrease with increasing reaction time and was found to be correlated with a decrease in O$_2$ evolution (OER) activity, the origin of this latter effect however being unknown. Here we investigate, by means of density functional theory calculation, anion vacancies at the TaON-terminated (001) surface of the perovskite oxynitride SrTaO$_2$N. We find an energetic preference for oxygen and ni…
The oxygen-exchange behavior has been studied in half-doped manganese and cobalt perovskite oxides. We have found that the oxygen diffusivity in Gd_{0.5}Ba_{0.5}MnO_{3-δ} can be enhanced by orders of magnitude by inducing crystallographic ordering among lanthanide and alkali-earth ions in the A-site sublattice. Transformation of a simple cubic perovskite, with randomly occupied A-sites, into a layered crystal GdBaMn_2O_{5+x} (or isostructural GdBaCo_2O_{5+x} for cobalt oxide) with alternating lanthanide and alkali-earth planes reduces the oxygen bonding strength and provides disorder-free chan…
The link between the crystal distortions of the perovskite structure and the magnetic exchange interaction, the single-ion anisotropy (SIA) and the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya (DM) interaction are investigated by means of density-functional calculations. Using BiFeO$_3$ and LaFeO$_3$ as model systems, we quantify the relationship between the oxygen octahedra rotations, the ferroelectricity and the weak ferromagnetism (wFM). We recover the fact that the wFM is due to the DM interaction induced by the oxygen octahedra rotations. We find a simple relationship between the wFM, the oxygen rotation amplitu…
The list of possible commensurate phases obtained from the parent tetragonal phase of Ruddlesden-Popper systems, A$_{n+1}$B$_n$C$_{3n+1}$ for general $n$ due to a single phase transition involving the reorienting of octahedra of C (oxygen) ions is reexamined using a Landau expansion. This expansion allows for the nonlinearity of the octahedral rotations and the rotation-strain coupling. It is found that most structures allowed by symmetry are inconsistent with the constraint of rigid octahedra which dictates the form of the quartic terms in the Landau free energy. For A$_2$BC$_4$ our analysis …
Fast oxygen transport materials are necessary for a range of technologies, including efficient and cost-effective solid oxide fuel cells, gas separation membranes, oxygen sensors, chemical looping devices, and memristors. Strain is often proposed as a method to enhance the performance of oxygen transport materials, but the magnitude of its effect and its underlying mechanisms are not well-understood, particularly in the widely-used perovskite-structured oxygen conductors. This work reports on an ab initio prediction of strain effects on migration energetics for nine perovskite systems of the f…
We propose a microscopic description of the bond-disproportionated insulating state in the bismuth perovskites $X$BiO$_3$ ($X$=Ba, Sr) that recognizes the bismuth-oxygen hybridization as a dominant energy scale. It is demonstrated using electronic structure methods that the breathing distortion is accompanied by spatial condensation of hole pairs into local, molecular-like orbitals of the $A_{1g}$ symmetry composed of O-$2p_σ$ and Bi-$6s$ atomic orbitals of collapsed BiO$_6$ octahedra. Primary importance of oxygen $p$-states is thus revealed, in contrast to a popular picture of a purely ionic …
Ion transport in solid-state devices is of great interest for current and future energy and information technologies. A superior enhancement of several orders of magnitude of the oxygen diffusivity has been recently reported for grain boundaries in lanthanum strontium manganites. However, the significance and extent of this unique phenomenon is not yet established. Here, we fabricate a thin film continuous composition map of the La0.8Sr0.2(Mn1-xCox)0.85O3-d family revealing a substantial enhancement of the grain boundary oxygen mass transport properties for the entire range of compositions. Th…
A three-step route has been developed for the synthesis of a new oxygen-ordered double perovskite, BaYMn2O5.5 or Ba2Y2Mn4O11. (i) The A-site cation ordered perovskite, BaYMn2O5+d, is first synthesized at d ~ 0 by an oxygen-getter-controlled low-O2-pressure encapsulation technique utilizing FeO as the getter for excess oxygen. (ii) The as-synthesized, oxygen-deficient BaYMn2O5.0 phase is then readily oxygenated to the d ~ 1 level by means of 1-atm-O2 annealing at low temperatures. (iii) By annealing this fully-oxygenated BaYMn2O6.0 in flowing N2 gas at moderate temperatures the new intermediate…
The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is considered a key reaction for electrochemical energy conversion but slow kinetics hamper application in electrolyzers, metal-air batteries and other applications that rely on sustainable protons from water oxidation. In this review, the prospect of epitaxial perovskite oxides for the OER at room temperature in alkaline media is reviewed with respect to fundamental insight into systematic trends of the activity. First, we thoroughly define the perovskite structure and its parameter space. Then, the synthesis methods used to make electrocatalytic epitaxial …
Nonstoichiometric perovskite-related oxides (such as ferrites and cobaltites, etc.) are characterized by fast oxygen transport at ambient temperatures, which relates to the microstructural texturing of these materials, consisting wholly of nanoscale microdomains. We have developed an inhomogeneous diffusion model to describe the kinetics of oxygen incorporation into nanostructured oxides. Nanodomain boundaries are assumed to be the high diffusivity paths for oxygen transport whereas diffusion into the domains proceeds much slower. Using Laplace transform methods, an exact solution is found for…
We present a systematic study of the effect of Y doping and hydration level on the structural transformations of BaCeO3 based on anelastic spectroscopy experiments. The temperature of the intermediate transformation between rhombohedral and orthorhombic Imma phases rises with increasing the molar fraction x of Y roughly as (500 K)x in the hydrated state, and is depressed of more than twice that amount after complete dehydration. This is explained in terms of the effect of doping on the average (Ce/Y)-O and Ba-O bond lengths, and of lattice relaxation from O vacancies. The different behavior of…
The oxygen-deficient perovskite cobaltite SrCo1-xNbxO3-d was synthesized by direct solid-state reaction and its magnetotransport properties were investigated. This cobaltite exhibits an unusual ferromagnetic behavior with a transition temperature Tm = 130-150 K and a spin glass like behavior below Tm. Importantly, this phase reaches a large magnetoresistance (MR) value, MR = -(rH - r0) / r0 = 30% at 5 K in 7 T. The large MR effect is believed to be related to the disordered magnetic state induced by the Nb-for-Co substitution.
We use first-principles methods to study oxygen-octahedra rotations in ABO3 perovskite oxides. We focus on the short-period, perfectly antiphase or in-phase, tilt patterns that characterize most compounds and control their physical (e.g., conductive, magnetic) properties. Based on an analytical form of the relevant potential energy surface, we discuss the conditions for the stability of polymorphs presenting different tilt patterns, and obtain numerical results for a collection of thirty-five representative materials. Our results reveal the mechanisms responsible for the frequent occurrence of…
Oxygen vacancy ordering in perovskite-type transition-metal oxides plays an important role in the emergence of exotic electronic properties, as typified by superconducting cuprates. In this study, we predict the stability of oxygen-deficient perovskite structures in ACuO$_{3-x}$ (A $=$ Ca, Sr, Ba, Sc, Y, La) by density functional theory calculation. We introduce a combination of the cluster expansion method, Gaussian process, and Bayesian optimization to find stable oxygen-deficient structures among a considerable number of candidates. Our calculations not only reproduce the reported structure…
We explore the degradation behaviour under continuous illumination and direct oxygen exposure of inverted unencapsulated formamidinium(FA)0.83Cs0.17Pb(I0.8Br0.2)3, CH3NH3PbI3, and CH3NH3PbI3-xClx perovskite solar cells. We continuously test the devices in-situ and in-operando with current-voltage sweeps, transient photocurrent, and transient photovoltage measurements, and find that degradation in the CH3NH3PbI3-xClx solar cells due to oxygen exposure occurs over shorter timescales than FA0.83Cs0.17Pb(I0.8Br0.2)3 mixed-cation devices. We attribute these oxygen-induced losses in the power conver…
Hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites are exceedingly interesting candidates for new solar energy technologies, for both ground-based and space applications. However, their large-scale production is hampered by the lack of long-term stability, mostly associated to ion migration. The specific role of non-covalent bonds in contributing to the stability remains elusive, and in certain cases controversial. Here, we perform an investigation on a large perovskite chemical space via a combination of first-principles calculations for the bond strengths and the recently developed Sure Independent Screen…
Oxygen stoichiometry is one of the most important elements in determining the physical properties of transition metal oxides (TMOs). A small fractional change in the oxygen content, resulting in the variation of valence state of the transition metal, can drastically modify the materials functionalities. In particular, TMOs with mixed valences have attracted attention for many energy applications. Previous studies also showed that the ability to control the number of d-band electron populations and detailed spin configurations is critical for improved catalytic performance of TMOs. In this cont…
The unprecedented structural flexibility and diversity of inorganic frameworks of layered hybrid halide perovskites (LHHPs) rise up a wide range of useful optoelectronic properties thus predetermining the extraordinary high interest to this family of materials. Nevertheless, the influence of different types of distortions of their inorganic framework on key physical properties such as band gap has not yet been quantitatively identified. We provided a systematic study of the relationships between LHHPs' band gaps and six main structural descriptors of inorganic framework, including interlayer d…
The oxygen octahedral tilted domains in 0.90(Bi1/2Na1/2)TiO3-0.5(Bi1/2K1/2)TiO3-0.5BaTiO3 lead-free perovskite piezoelectric ceramic have been studied by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Selected-area electron diffraction patterns shows the 1/2ooo and 1/2ooe reflections, indicating the presence of antiphase (a-a-a-) and in-phase (aoaoc+) octahedral tilting, respectively. The morphology and distributions of these tilted domains are shown in the centered dark-field images. Further, the Bragg-filtered high-resolution TEM image reveals that the size of the in-phase tilted domains varies fro…
Oxygen vacancy formation energy is an important quantity for enabling fast oxygen diffusion and oxygen catalysis in technologies like solid oxide fuel cells. Both previous literature in various systems and our calculations in LaMnO3, La0.75Sr0.25MnO3, LaFeO3, and La0.75Sr0.25FeO3, show mixed results for the direction and magnitude of the change in vacancy formation energy with strain. This paper develops a model to make sense of the different trend shapes in vacancy formation energy versus strain. We model strain effects using a set of consistent ab initio calculations, and demonstrate that ou…
The GdFeO$_{3}$-type perovskite CaCoO$_{3}$ has been successfully synthesized by high-pressure oxygen annealing for the oxygen deficient perovskite. A detailed structural analysis based on synchrotron X-ray diffraction data and a thermogravimetric analysis show that the valence of Co is +4 and the sample is free from oxygen deficiency. This compound shows an antiferromagnetic ordering at 95 K, which has presumably helical spin arrangement, with keeping the incoherent metallic state down to the lowest temperature. This work demonstrates that the Co$^{4+}$-perovskite oxides exhibit a variety of …
