In this paper we consider the inverse electromagnetic scattering for a cavity surrounded by an inhomogeneous medium in three dimensions. The measurements are scattered wave fields measured on some surface inside the cavity, where such scattered wave fields are due to sources emitted on the same surface. We first prove that the measurements uniquely determine the shape of the cavity, where we make use of a boundary value problem called the exterior transmission problem. We then complete the inverse scattering problem by designing the linear sampling method to reconstruct the cavity. Numerical examples are further provided to illustrate the viability of our algorithm.
In this paper, we investigate the interior transmission eigenvalue problem for an inhomogeneous media with conductive boundary conditions. We prove the discreteness and existence of the transmission eigenvalues. We also investigate the inverse spectral problem of gaining information about the material properties from the transmission eigenvalues. In particular, we prove that the first transmission eigenvalue is a monotonic function of the refractive index and boundary conductivity parameter eta, and obtain a uniqueness result for constant coefficients. We provide some numerical examples to dem…
We consider inhomogeneous $p$-Laplace type equations of the form $-\mathrm{div}\left(a(\nabla u)\right)=f$ in a possibly anisotropic setting. Under general assumptions on the source term $f$, we obtain quantitative Sobolev regularity results for the stress field $a(\nabla u)$ and weighted $L^2$ estimates for the Hessian of the solution. As far as we know, our results are new or refine the ones available in literature also when restricted to the Euclidean setting.
This paper is concerned with the inverse acoustic scattering problems by an obstacle or a cavity with a sound-soft or a sound-hard boundary. A direct imaging method relying on the boundary conditions is proposed for reconstructing the shape of the obstacle or cavity. First, the scattered fields are approximated by the Fourier-Bessel functions with the measurements on a closed curve. Then, the indicator functions are established by the superpositions of the total fields or their derivatives to the incident point sources. We prove that the indicator functions vanish only on the boundary of the o…
We show asymptotic, exponential stability of the equilibrium configuration, $\smallL$, of a hollow physical pendulum with its inner part entirely filled with a viscous liquid, corresponding to the center of mass being in the lowest position. Moreover, we prove that every weak solution with initial data possessing finite total initial energy and belonging to a "large" open set, becomes eventually smooth and decays exponentially fast to the equilibrium $\smallL$. These results are obtained also as byproduct of a "generalized linearization principle" that we show for evolution equations with non-…
A rigid body, with an interior cavity entirely filled with a Navier-Stokes liquid, moves in absence of external torques relative to the center of mass of the coupled system body-liquid (inertial motions). The only steady-state motions allowed are then those where the system, as a whole rigid body, rotates uniformly around one of the central axes of inertia (permanent rotations). Objective of this article is two-fold. On the one hand, we provide sufficient conditions for the asymptotic, exponential stability of permanent rotations, as well as for their instability. On the other hand, we study t…

Traditionally, the Lighthill-Whitham-Richards (LWR) models for homogeneous and inhomogeneous roads have been analyzed in flux-density space with the fundamental diagram of the flux-density relation. In this paper, we present a new framework for analyzing the LWR model, especially the Riemann problem at a linear boundary in which the upstream and downstream links are homogeneous and initially carry uniform traffic. We first review the definitions of local supply and demand functions and then introduce the so-called supply-demand diagram, on which a traffic state can be represented by its supply…
For any inhomogeneous compactly supported electromagnetic (EM) medium, it is shown that there exists an infinite set of linearly independent electromagnetic waves which generate nearly vanishing scattered wave fields. If the inhomogeneous medium is coated with a layer of properly chosen conducting medium, then the wave set is generated from the Maxwell-Herglotz approximation to the interior PEC or PMC eigenfunctions and depends only on the shape of the inhomogeneous medium. If no such a conducting coating is used, then the wave set is generated from the Maxwell-Herglotz approximation to the ge…
The paper contains lower bounds on the counting function of the positive eigenvalues of the interior transmission problem when the latter is elliptic. In particular, these bounds justify the existence of an infinite set of interior transmission eigenvalues and provide asymptotic estimates from above on the counting function for the large values of the wave number. They also lead to certain important upper estimates on the first few interior transmission eigenvalues. We consider the classical transmission problem as well as the case when the inhomogeneous medium contains an obstacle.
This paper contains a lower bound of the Weyl type on the counting function of the positive eigenvalues of the interior transmission eigenvalue problem which justifies the existence of an infinite set of positive interior transmission eigenvalues. We consider the classical transmission problem as well as the case where the inhomogeneous medium contains an obstacle. One of the essential components of the proof is an estimate for the D-t-N operator for the Helmholtz equation for positive $λ$ that replaces the standard parameter-elliptic estimate valid outside of the positive semi-axis.
We consider the interior transmission eigenvalue (ITE) problem, which arises when scattering by inhomogeneous media is studied. The ITE problem is not self-adjoint. We show that positive ITEs are observable together with plus or minus signs that are defined by the direction of motion of the corresponding eigenvalues of the scattering matrix (when the latter approach {\bf$z=1$)}. We obtain a Weyl type formula for the counting function of positive ITEs, which are taken together with ascribed signs.
We discuss a Steklov-type problem for Maxwell's equations which is related to an interior Calderón operator and an appropriate Dirichlet-to-Neumann type map. The corresponding Neumann-to-Dirichlet map turns out to be compact and this provides a Fourier basis of Steklov eigenfunctions for the associated energy spaces. With an approach similar to that developed by Auchmuty for the Laplace operator, we provide natural spectral representations for the appropriate trace spaces, for the Calderón operator itself and for the solutions of the corresponding boundary value problems subject to electric or…
We consider an inverse spectral theory in a domain with the cavity that is bounded by a penetrable inhomogeneous medium. An ODE system is constructed piecewise through the solutions inside and outside the cavity. The ODE system is connected to the PDE system via the analytic continuation. For each scattered angle, we describe its eigenvalue density in the complex plane, and prove an inverse uniqueness on the inhomogeneity by the measurements in the far-fields.
We consider the time-harmonic acoustic wave scattering by a bounded {\it anisotropic inhomogeneity} embedded in an unbounded {\it anisotropic} homogeneous medium. The material parameters may have discontinuities across the interface between the inhomogeneous interior and homogeneous exterior regions. The corresponding mathematical problem is formulated as a transmission problems for a second order elliptic partial differential equation of Helmholtz type with discontinuous variable coefficients. Using a localised quasi-parametrix based on the harmonic fundamental solution, the transmission prob…
The interior Dirichlet boundary value problem for the diffusion equation in non-homogeneous media is reduced to a system of Boundary-Domain Integral Equations (BDIEs) employing the parametrix obtained in (Fresneda-Portillo, 2019) different from (Chkadua et. al 2009). We further extend the results obtained in (Fresneda-Portillo, 2019) for the mixed problem in a smooth domain with $L^{2}(Ω)$ right hand side to Lipschitz domains and source term $f$ in the Sobolev space $H^{-1}(Ω)$, where neither the classical nor the canonical co-normal derivatives are well defined. Equivalence between the system…
The paper concerns the isotropic interior transmission eigenvalue (ITE) problem. This problem is not elliptic, but we show that, using the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map, it can be reduced to an elliptic one. This leads to the discreteness of the spectrum as well as to certain results on possible location of the transmission eigenvalues. If the index of refraction $\sqrt{n(x)}$ is real, we get a result on the existence of infinitely many positive ITEs and the Weyl type lower bound on its counting function. All the results are obtained under the assumption that $n(x)-1$ does not vanish at the boundar…
This paper considers the inverse problem of scattering of time-harmonic acoustic and electromagnetic plane waves by a bounded, inhomogeneous, penetrable obstacle with embedded objects inside. A new method is proposed to prove that the inhomogeneous penetrable obstacle can be uniquely determined from the far-field pattern at a fixed frequency, disregarding its contents. Our method is based on constructing a well-posed interior transmission problem in a small domain associated with the Helmholtz or modified Helmholtz equation and the Maxwell or modified Maxwell equations. A key role is played by…
Consider the time-domain multiple cavity scattering problem, which arises in diverse scientific areas and has significant industrial and military applications. The multiple cavity embedded in an infinite ground plane, is filled with inhomogeneous media characterized by variable dielectric permittivities and magnetic permeabilities. Corresponding to the transverse electric or magnetic polarization, the scattering problem can be studied for the Helmholtz equation in frequency domain and wave equation in time-domain, respectively. A novel transparent boundary condition in time-domain is developed…
We develop a novel wave imaging scheme for reconstructing the shape of an inhomogeneous scatterer and we consider the inverse acoustic obstacle scattering problem as a prototype model for our study. There exists a wealth of reconstruction methods for the inverse obstacle scattering problem and many of them intentionally avoid the interior resonant modes. Indeed, the occurrence of the interior resonance may cause the failure of the corresponding reconstruction. However, based on the observation that the interior resonant modes actually carry the geometrical information of the underlying obstacl…
Given an open bounded subset $Ω$ of $\mathbb{R}^n$, which is convex and satisfies an interior sphere condition, we consider the pde $-Δ_{\infty} u = 1$ in $Ω$, subject to the homogeneous boundary condition $u = 0$ on $\partial Ω$. We prove that the unique solution to this Dirichlet problem is power-concave (precisely, 3/4 concave) and it is of class $C ^1(Ω)$. We then investigate the overdetermined Serrin-type problem obtained by adding the extra boundary condition $|\nabla u| = a$ on $\partial Ω$; by using a suitable $P$-function we prove that, if $Ω$ satisfies the same assumptions as above a…
Well-posedness of Dirichlet boundary value problems for reflected fractional $p$-Laplace-type inhomogeneous equations in compact doubling metric measure spaces
In this paper we investigate a mathematical model arising from volcanology describing surface deformation effects generated by a magma chamber embedded into Earth's interior and exerting on it a uniform hydrostatic pressure. The modeling assumptions translate mathematically into a Neumann boundary value problem for the classical Lamé system in a half-space with an embedded pressurized cavity. We establish well-posedness of the problem in suitable weighted Sobolev spaces and analyse the inverse problem of determining the pressurized cavity from partial measurements of the displacement field pro…
