Constraints from surveys of post common envelope binaries (PCEBs) consisting of a white dwarf plus an M-dwarf companion have led to significant progress in our understanding of the formation of close white dwarf binary stars with low-mass companions. The white dwarf binary pathways project aims at extending these previous surveys to larger secondary masses, i.e. secondary stars of spectral type AFGK. Here we present the discovery and observational characterization of three PCEBs with G-type secondary stars and orbital periods between 1.2 and 2.5 days. Using our own tools as well as MESA we estimate the evolutionary history of the binary stars and predict their future. We find a large range of possible evolutionary histories for all three systems and identify no indications for differences in common envelope evolution compared to PCEBs with lower mass secondary stars. Despite their similarities in orbital period and secondary spectral type, we estimate that the future of the three systems are very different: TYC 4962-1205-1 is a progenitor of a cataclysmic variable system with an evolved donor star, TYC 4700-815-1 will run into dynamically unstable mass transfer that will cause the two stars to merge, and TYC 1380-957-1 may appear as super soft source before becoming a rather typical cataclysmic variable star.
Statistical characterization of secondary subsystems in binaries helps to distinguish between various scenarios of multiple-star formation. The DSSI speckle instrument was used at the Gemini-N telescope for several hours in 2015 July to probe binarity of 25 secondary components in nearby solar-type binaries. Six new subsystems were resolved, with meaningful detection limits for the remaining targets. The large incidence of secondary subsystems agrees with other similar studies. The newly resolved subsystem HIP 115417 Ba,Bb causes deviations in the observed motion of the outer binary from which…
Virtually all binaries consisting of a white dwarf with a non-degenerate companion can be classified as either close post-interaction systems (with orbital periods of a few days or less), or wide systems (with periods longer than decades), in which both components have effectively evolved as single stars. Binaries with periods between these two extremes can help constrain common envelope efficiency, or highlight alternative pathways towards the creation of compact binaries. To date such binaries have remained mostly elusive. Here we present three white dwarfs in binaries with evolved subgiant …
Roughly 30% of variable AGB stars show a Long Secondary Period, or LSP. These LSPs have posed something of a problem in recent years and their cause remains a mystery. By combining VLT-derived velocity curves with MACHO and OGLE light curves we were able to examine many properties of these stars and test the theory that LSPs are caused by binarity. We show why we concluded that the binary model for LSPs is unlikely. Examining mid-infrared SAGE observations for stars with LSPs shows that these stars are surrounded by a significant amount of cool dust in a nonspherical distribution, e.g. a disk …
We report on a study of eclipse timing variations in contact binary systems, using long-cadence lightcurves in the Kepler archive. As a first step, 'observed minus calculated' (O-C) curves were produced for both the primary and secondary eclipses of some 2000 Kepler binaries. We find ~390 short-period binaries with O-C curves that exhibit (i) random-walk like variations or quasi-periodicities, with typical amplitudes of +/- 200-300 seconds, and (ii) anticorrelations between the primary and secondary eclipse timing variations. We present a detailed analysis and results for 32 of these binaries …
To improve the statistics of hierarchical multiplicity, secondary components of wide nearby binaries with solar-type primaries were surveyed at the SOAR telescope for evaluating the frequency of subsystems. Images of 17 faint secondaries were obtained with the SOAR Adaptive Module that improved the seeing; one new 0.2" binary was detected. For all targets, photometry in the g', i', z' bands is given. Another 46 secondaries were observed by speckle interferometry, resolving 7 close subsystems. Adding literature data, the binarity of 95 secondary components is evaluated. We found that the detect…
Based on a direct combination of the Hipparcos data with astrometric ground-based observational catalogues having epochs between 1938 and 1999 the preliminary orbits and component masses are calculated for 6 binaries with no previous orbit calculation: $ι$~Vir (HIP~69701) with period of 55 years, photocentric semi-major axis of 200 mas, relative semi-major axis of 830 mas and a dwarf secondary of 0.6 solar masses; $γ$~UMa (HIP~58001) -- 20.5 years, 90 mas, 460 mas and a dwarf secondary of 0.8 solar masses; $κ$~Del (HIP~101916) -- 45 years, 100 mas, 520 mas and a dwarf secondary of 0.4 solar ma…
The white dwarf binary pathways survey is dedicated to studying the origin and evolution of binaries containing a white dwarf and an intermediate-mass secondary star of the spectral type A, F, G, or K (WD+AFGK). Here we present CPD-65\,264, a new post common envelope binary with an orbital period of 1.37\,days that contains a massive white dwarf ($ 0.86\pm 0.06\,\mathrm{M}_{\odot}$) and an intermediate-mass ($1.00\pm0.05\,\mathrm{M}_{\odot}$) main-sequence secondary star. We characterized the secondary star and measured the orbital period using high-resolution optical spectroscopy. The white d…
$\upsilon$ Sgr is the prototype of four known hydrogen-deficient binary (HdB) systems. These are characterised by a hydrogen-deficient A-type primary, variable hydrogen emission lines, and a normally unseen secondary presumed to be an upper main-sequence star. Orbital periods range from tens of days to 360 d. TESS observations of all four HdBs show a flux variation with well-defined period in the range 0.5 -- 0.9 d, too short to be associated with the supergiant primary, and more likely to be the rotation period of the secondary and associated with a chemical surface asymmetry or a low-order n…
The energy transfer of W UMa contact binaries and its effects on the secondary in W UMa contact binaries are investigated. Relations are given between the mass ratio (q) and the relative energy transfer rates, i.e. U1, the ratio of the transferred luminosity to the surface luminosity of the primary and U2, the ratio of the transferred luminosity to the nuclear luminosity of the secondary. The theoretical curves(U1 vs q and U2 vs q) are derived. Although these curves can reflect the distribution of U1 vs q and U2 vs q, some observational systems are significantly deviated from these curves. It …
Recently, our understanding of the origin of W UMa-type contact binaries has become clearer. Initial masses of their components were successfully estimated by Yıldız and Doğan using a new method mainly based on observational properties of overluminous secondary components. In this paper, we continue to discuss the results and make computations for age and orbital evolution of these binaries. It is shown that the secondary mass, according to its luminosity, also successfully predicts the observed radius. While the current mass of the primary component is determined by initial masses, the curren…
The influence of stellar activity on the fundamental properties of stars around and below 1 Msun is not well understood. We aim to determine absolute dimensions and abundances for the solar-type detached eclipsing binary V636 Cen. The results are based on uvby light curves, uvby-beta standard photometry, radial velocity observations, and high-resolution spectra. Masses and radii that are precise to 0.5% have been established for the components of V636 Cen. The 0.85 Msun secondary component is moderately active with starspots and CaII H and K emission, and the 1.05 Msun primary shows signs of a…
W UMa type binaries have two defining characteristics. These are (i) the effective temperatures of both components are very similar, and (ii) the secondary (currently less massive) component is overluminous for its current mass. We consider the latter to be an indication of its mass before the mass-transfer event. For these stars we define a mass difference ($δM$) between the mass determined from its luminosity and the present mass determined from fitting the binary orbit. We compare the observed values of the mass difference to stellar models with mass loss. The range of initial secondary mas…
A hydrodynamic model for the energy transport between the components of a contact binary is presented. Energy is transported by a large-scale, steady circulation carrying high entropy matter from the primary to secondary component. The circulation is driven by the baroclinic structure of the common envelope, which is a direct consequence of the nonuniform heating at the inner critical Roche lobes due to unequal emergent energy fluxes of the components. The mass stream flowing around the secondary is bound to the equatorial region by the Coriolis force and its width is determined primarily by t…
Establishing a large sample of post common envelope binaries (PCEBs) that consist of a white dwarf plus an intermediate mass companion star of spectral type AFGK, offers the potential to provide new constraints on theoretical models of white dwarf binary formation and evolution. Here we present a detailed analysis of two new systems, TYC 110-755-1 and TYC 3858-1215-1. Based on radial velocity measurements we find the orbital periods of the two systems to be $\sim$ 0.85 and $\sim$ 1.64 days, respectively. In addition, HST spectroscopy of TYC 110-755-1 allowed us to measure the mass of the white…
Close white dwarf binaries consisting of a white dwarf and an A, F, G or K type main sequence star, henceforth close WD+AFGK binaries, are ideal systems to understand the nature of type Ia supernovae progenitors and to test binary evolution models. In this work we identify 775 WD+AFGK candidates from TGAS (The Tycho-Gaia Astrometric Solution) and Gaia Data Release 2 (DR2), a well-defined sample of stars with available parallaxes, and we measure radial velocities (RVs) for 275 of them with the aim of identifying close binaries. The RVs have been measured from high resolution spectra obtained at…
AM CVn systems are interacting binaries similar to cataclysmic variables (CVs), but more compact with orbital periods of less than 80 minutes. The primary is a white dwarf, whereas the nature of the secondary is not completely clear, yet. Abundances and composition of the outer layer of the secondary can be found by analysis of the accretion disk (presented by Nagel et al. these proceedings). Spectra from high-state AM CVn systems do not only show typical signatures of accretion disks, but also P Cygni line profiles, a sign of outflow being present in the system. Here we present the first quan…
Interacting binaries consist of a secondary star which fills or is very close to filling its Roche lobe, resulting in accretion onto the primary star, which is often, but not always, a compact object. In many cases, the primary star, secondary star, and the accretion disk can all be significant sources of luminosity. SIM Lite will only measure the photocenter of an astrometric target, and thus determining the true astrometric orbits of such systems will be difficult. We have modified the Eclipsing Light Curve code (Orosz & Hauschildt 2000) to allow us to model the flux-weighted reflex motions …
Formation of long-period post-common-envelope binaries I. No extra energy is needed to explain oxygen-neon white dwarfs paired with AFGK-type main-sequence stars
ZZ Boo is an F-type detached eclipsing binary system containing two almost-identical stars on a circular orbit with a period of 4.992 d. We analyse light curves from two sectors of observations with the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) and two published sets of radial velocities of the component stars to determine their physical properties to high precision. We find masses of 1.558 +/- 0.008 Msun and 1.599 +/- 0.012 Msun, and radii of 2.063 +/- 0.006 Rsun and 2.205 +/- 0.006 Rsun. The similarity in the primary and secondary eclipse depths has led to confusion in the past. The high …
We present the second paper of a series of publications aiming at obtaining a better understanding regarding the nature of type Ia supernovae (SNIa) progenitors by studying a large sample of detached F, G and K main sequence stars in close orbits with white dwarf companions (i.e. WD+FGK binaries). We employ the LAMOST (Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fibre Spectroscopic Telescope) data release 4 spectroscopic data base together with GALEX (Galaxy Evolution Explorer) ultraviolet fluxes to identify 1,549 WD+FGK binary candidates (1,057 of which are new), thus doubling the number of known sources. We…
We present a detailed study of the F-type detached eclipsing binary BK Peg, based on new photometric and spectroscopic observations. The two components, which have evolved to the upper half of the main-sequence band, are quite different with masses and radii of (1.414 +/- 0.007 Msun, 1.988 +/- 0.008 Rsun) and (1.257 +/- 0.005 Msun, 1.474 +/- 0.017 Rsun), respectively. The 5.49 day period orbit of BK Peg is slightly eccentric (e = 0.053). The measured rotational velocities are 16.6 +/- 0.2 (primary) and 13.4 +/- 0.2 (secondary) km/s. For the secondary component this corresponds to (pseudo)synch…
We present an analysis of the detached eclipsing binaries V44 and V54 belonging to the globular cluster M55. For V54 we obtain the following absolute parameters: $M_p=0.726\pm 0.015\,M_\odot$, $R_p=1.006\pm 0.009\,R_\odot$, $L_p=1.38\pm 0.07\,L_\odot$ for the primary, and $M_s=0.555\pm 0.008\,M_\odot$, $R_s=0.528\pm 0.005\,R_\odot$, $L_s=0.16\pm0.01\,L_\odot$ for the secondary. The age and apparent distance modulus of V54 are estimated at 13.3 - 14.7 Gyr and $13.94\pm0.05$ mag, respectively. This age is substantially larger than ages we have derived from the analysis of binary systems in 47 Tu…
We present the first BVR photometry, period variation, and photometric light-curve analysis of two poorly studied eclipsing binaries V1321 Cyg and CR Tau. Observations were carried out from November 2017 to January 2020 at the observatory of Uzhhorod National University. Period variations were studied using all available early published as well as our minima times. We have used newly developed ELISa code for the light curve analysis and determination of photometric parameters of both systems. We found that V1321 Cyg is a close detached eclipsing system with a low photometric mass ratio of $q=0…
We searched the orbital period changes in 182 EA-type (including the 101 Algol systems used by \cite{hal89}), 43 EB-type and 53 EW-type binaries with known both the mass ratio and the spectral type of their secondary components. We reproduced and improved the same diagram as Hall's (1989) according to the new collected data. Our plots do not support the conclusion derived by \cite{hal89} that all cases of cyclical period changes are restricted to binaries having the secondary component with spectral types later than F5. The presence of period changes also among stars with secondary component o…
The space-based gravitational wave (GW) detector, \emph{evolved Laser Interferometer Space Antenna} (eLISA) is expected to observe millions of compact Galactic binaries that populate our Milky Way. GW measurements obtained from the eLISA detector are in many cases complimentary to possible electro-magnetic (EM) data. In our previous papers, we have shown that the EM data can significantly enhance our knowledge of the astrophysically relevant GW parameters of the Galactic binaries, such as the amplitude and inclination. This is possible due to the presence of some strong correlations between GW…
With 16-month Kepler data, 14 long-period (40 d - 265 d) eclipsing binaries on highly eccentric orbits (minimum e between 0.5 and 0.85) are recognized from their closely separated primary and secondary eclipses (Δt_I,II = 3 d - 10 d). These systems confirm the existence of a previously hinted binary population situated near a constant angular momentum track at P(1-e^2)^(3/2) ~ 15 d, close to the tidal circularization period P_circ. They may be presently migrating due to tidal dissipation and form a steady-state stream (~1% of stars) feeding the close-binary population (few percent of stars). I…
The orbits of five single-lined spectroscopic binaries have recently been determined. We now use astrometric measurements that were collected with the Hipparcos satellite to constrain the systems' mass ratios and secondary masses. The barycentric astrometric orbits of three binary systems, HD 140667, HD 158222, and HD 217924, are fully determined and precise estimates of their mass ratios are obtained. Follow-up of these systems with infrared spectroscopy could yield model-independent dynamical masses for all components.
Preparing for the expected wealth of Gaia detections, we consider here a simple algorithm for classifying unresolved astrometric binaries with main-sequence (MS) primary into three classes: binaries with a probable MS secondary, with two possible values for the mass ratio; probable hierarchical triple MS systems with an astrometric secondary as a close binary, with a limited range of mass-ratio values; and binaries with a compact-object secondary, with a minimal value of the mass ratio. This is done by defining a unit-less observational parameter 'Astrometric Mass-Ratio Function' (AMRF), $\mat…
We investigate the characteristics of two newly discovered short-period, double-lined, massive binary systems, VFTS 450 (O9.7$\;$II--Ib$\,$+$\,$O7::) and VFTS 652 (B1$\;$Ib$\,+\,$O9:$\;$III:). We perform model-atmosphere analyses to characterise the photospheric properties of both members of each binary (denoting the `primary' as the spectroscopically more conspicuous component). Radial velocities and optical photometry are used to estimate the binary-system parameters. We estimate $T_{\rm eff}=27$ kK, $\log{(g)}=2.9$ (cgs) for the VFTS 450 primary spectrum (34kK, 3.6: for the secondary spectr…
Binary systems consisting of a secondary accreting form a wind-emitting primary are ubiquitous in astrophysics. The phenomenology of such Bondi-Hoyle-Lyttleton (BHL) accretors is particularly rich when an accretion disc forms around the secondary. The outer radius of such discs is commonly estimated from the net angular momentum produced by a density variation of material across the BHL or Bondi accretion cylinder, as the latter is tilted with respect to the direction to the primary due to orbital motion. But this approach has ignored the fact that the wind experiences an outward driving force…
We present a new analysis of the multiple star V1200 Centauri based on the most recent observations for this system. We used the photometric observations from the Solaris network and the TESS telescope, combined with the new radial velocities from the CHIRON spectrograph and those published in the literature. We confirmed that V1200 Cen consists of a 2.5-day eclipsing binary orbited by a third body. We derived the parameters of the eclipsing components, which are $M_{Aa} = 1.393\pm0.018\,$M$_\odot$, $R_{Aa} = 1.407\pm0.014\,$R$_\odot$ and $T_{{\rm eff},Aa} = 6\,588\pm58\,$K for the primary, an…
We use a combination of X-shooter spectroscopy, ULTRACAM high-speed photometry and SOFI near-infrared photometry to measure the masses and radii of both components of the eclipsing post common envelope binaries SDSS J1212-0123 and GK Vir. For both systems we measure the gravitational redshift of the white dwarf and combine it with light curve model fits to determine the inclinations, masses and radii. For SDSS J1212-0123 we find a white dwarf mass and radius of 0.439 +/- 0.002 Msun and 0.0168 +/- 0.0003 Rsun, and a secondary star mass and radius of 0.273 +/- 0.002 Msun and 0.306 +/- 0.007 Rsun…
Motivated by the recent discovery of an Halpha emission line component originating close to the white dwarf primary in the post-common-envelope binary (PCEB) LTT 560, we have undertaken a spectroscopic snapshot survey on 11 short-period (P_orb < 6 h) PCEBs using FORS2. We have found multi-component Halpha emission line profiles in six of our targets, indicating that multiple Halpha emission sites are rather common in short-period PCEBs. The underlying physical mechanisms, however, can be fundamentally different. In our sample we find one system where the extracted radial velocities of two iden…
The eclipsing and double-lined spectroscopic binary V380 Cyg is an extremely important probe of stellar evolution: its primary component is a high-mass star at the brink of leaving the main sequence whereas the secondary star is still in the early part of its main sequence lifetime. We present extensive high-resolution echelle and grating spectroscopy from Ondrejov, Calar Alto, Victoria and La Palma. We apply spectral disentangling to unveil the individual spectra of the two stars and obtain new spectroscopic elements. The secondary star contributes only about 6% of the total light, which rema…
(abridged) We present an in-depth study of the hard-binary population of the old (7 Gyr) open cluster NGC 188. The main-sequence solar-type hard binaries in NGC 188 are nearly indistinguishable from similar binaries in the Galactic field. We find a global solar-type main-sequence hard-binary frequency in NGC 188 of 29 +/- 3 % for binaries with periods less than 10^4 days. For main-sequence hard binaries in the cluster we observe a log-period distribution that rises towards our detection limit, a roughly Gaussian eccentricity distribution centered on e = 0.35 (for binaries with periods longer t…
We have presented 309 new white-dwarf (WD) + main-sequence (MS) star binaries identified from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Tenth Data Release (DR10). The majority of them consist of a white dwarf and a low-mass secondary (typically M dwarf) companion. The SDSS spectra of the newly found WDMS binaries with a DA/DB white dwarf and an M/late-K dwarf companion are analyzed based on a spectral decomposition/fitting method. White dwarf effective temperatures, surface gravities and masses together with the secondary star spectral types are obtained, and the stellar parameters of DA WDs with $T…
We report on ground-based optical observations of ten cataclysmic binaries that were discovered through their X-ray emission. Time-resolved radial velocity spectroscopy yields unambiguous orbital periods for eight objects and ambiguous results for the remaining two. The orbital periods range from 87 min to 9.38 hr. We also obtained time-series optical photometry for six targets, four of which have coherent pulsations. These periods are 1218 s for 1RXS J045707.4+452751, 628 s for AX J1740.2-2903, 477 s for AX J1853.3-0128, and 935 s for IGR J19267+1325. A total of seven of the sources have cohe…
We present results of the combined photometric and spectroscopic analysis of three detached eclipsing binaries, which secondary components are not visible or very hard to identify in the optical spectra - ASAS J052743-0359.7, ASAS J065134-2211.5, and ASAS J073507-0905.7. The first one is a known visual binary ADS 4022, and we found that it is a quadruple system, composed of two spectroscopic binaries, one of which shows eclipses. None of the systems was previously recognized as a spectroscopic binary. We collected a number of high-resolution optical and IR spectra to calculate the radial veloc…
Results of an analysis of the BRITE-Constellation and SMEI photometry and radial-velocity observations, archival and new, of two single-lined spectroscopic binary systems $ν$ Centauri and $γ$ Lupi are reported. In the case of $γ$ Lup AB, a visual binary, an examination of the light-time effect shows that component A is the spectroscopic binary. Both $ν$ Cen and $γ$ Lup exhibit light variations with the orbital period. The variations are caused by the reflection effect, i.e. heating of the secondary's hemisphere by the early-B main sequence (MS) primary component's light. The modelling of the l…
We explore an unresolved controversy in the literature about the accuracy of Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) in modeling the accretion of gas onto a binary system, a problem with important applications to the evolution of proto-binaries as well as accreting binary super massive black holes. It has previously been suggested that SPH fails to model the flow of loosely bound material from the secondary to primary Roche lobe and that its general prediction that accretion drives mass ratios upwards is numerically flawed. Here we show with 2D SPH that this flow from secondary to primary Roche …
We have developed a comprehensive methodology for calculating the boundaries of the habitable zone (HZ) of planet-hosting S-type binary star systems. Our approach is general and takes into account the contribution of both stars to the location and extent of the Binary HZ with different stellar spectral types. We have studied how the binary eccentricity and stellar energy distribution affect the extent of the habitable zone. Results indicate that in binaries where the combination of mass-ratio and orbital eccentricity allows planet formation around a star of the system to proceed successfully, …
We investigate in this paper the astrophysical false-positive configuration in exoplanet-transit surveys that involves eclipsing binaries and giant planets which present only a secondary eclipse, as seen from the Earth. To test how an eclipsing binary configuration can mimic a planetary transit, we generate synthetic light curve of three examples of secondary-only eclipsing binary systems that we fit with a circular planetary model. Then, to evaluate its occurrence we model a population of binaries in double and triple system based on binary statistics and occurrence. We find that 0.061% +/- 0…

We present first results of a comprehensive photometric O-star survey performed with a robotic twin refractor at the Universitätssternwarte Bochum located near Cerro Armazones in Chile. For three high-mass stars, namely Pismis24-1, CPD-518946 and HD319702, we determined the period through the Lafler-Kinman algorithm and model the light curves within the framework of the Roche geometry. For Pismis24-1, a previously known eclipsing binary, we provide first light curves and determined a photometric period of 2.36 days together with an orbital inclination of 61.8 degrees. The best-fitting model so…

We present a detailed study of the G0V detached eclipsing binary EW Ori, based on new photometric and spectroscopic observations. Masses and radii that are precise to 0.9% and 0.5%, respectively, have been established for both components. The 1.12 Msun secondary component reveals weak Ca II H and K emission and is probably mildly active; no signs of activity are seen for the 1.17 Msun primary. We derive an [Fe/H] abundance of +0.05 +/- 0.09 and similar abundances for Si, Ca, Sc, Ti, Cr, and Ni. Yonsai-Yale and Granada solar-scaled evolutionary models for the observed metal abundance reproduce …
We have measured the orbital parameters of seven close binaries, including six new objects, in a radial velocity survey of 38 objects comprising a hot subdwarf star with orbital periods ranging from ~0.17 to 3 d. One new system, GALEX J2205-3141, shows reflection on a M dwarf companion. Three other objects show significant short-period variations, but their orbital parameters could not be constrained. Two systems comprising a hot subdwarf paired with a bright main-sequence/giant companion display short-period photometric variations possibly due to irradiation or stellar activity and are also s…
Using numerical modeling and a grid of synthetic spectra, we examine the effects that unresolved binaries have on the determination of various stellar atmospheric parameters for SEGUE targets measured using the SEGUE Stellar Parameter Pipeline (SSPP). To model undetected binaries that may be in the SEGUE sample, we use a variety of mass distributions for the primary and secondary stars in conjunction with empirically determined relationships for orbital parameters to determine the fraction of G-K dwarf stars, as defined by SDSS color cuts, that will be blended with a secondary companion. We fo…
The White Dwarf Binary Pathways Survey aims at increasing the number of known detached A, F, G and K main sequence stars in close orbits with white dwarf companions (WD+AFGK binaries) to refine our understanding about compact binary evolution and the nature of Supernova Ia progenitors. These close WD+AFGK binary stars are expected to form through common envelope evolution, in which tidal forces tend to circularize the orbit. However, some of the identified WD+AFGK binary candidates show eccentric orbits, indicating that these systems are either formed through a different mechanism or perhaps t…
We present the photometric and spectroscopic analysis of four W UMa binaries J015829.5+260333 (hereinafter as J0158), J030505.1+293443 (hereinafter as J0305), J102211.7+310022 (hereinafter as J1022) and KW Psc. The VRcIc band photometric observations are carried out with the 1.3-m Devasthal Fast Optical Telescope. For low resolution spectroscopy, we used 2-m Himalayan Chandra Telescope as well as the archival data from 4-m LAMOST survey. The systems J0158 and J0305 show a period increase rate of 5.26(+/-1.72)x10^-7 days/yr and 1.78(+/-1.52)x10^-6 days/yr, respectively. The period of J1022 is f…
Recent studies have shown that stellar chromospheric activity, and its effect on convective energy transport in the envelope, is most likely the cause of significant radius and temperature discrepancies between theoretical evolution models and observations. We aim to determine absolute dimensions and abundances for the solar-type detached eclipsing binary EF Aqr, and to perform a detailed comparison with results from recent stellar evolutionary models. uvby-beta standard photometry was obtained with the Stromgren Automatic Telescope. The broadening function formalism was applied on spectra obs…
Mass transfer from an evolved donor star to its binary companion is a standard feature of stellar evolution in binaries. In wide binaries, the companion star captures some of the mass ejected in a wind by the primary star. The captured material forms an accretion disk. Here, we study the evolution of wind-accretion disks, using a numerical approach which allows us to follow the long term evolution. For a broad range of initial conditions, we derive the radial density and temperature profiles of the disk. In most cases, wind-accretion leads to long-lived stable disks over the lifetime of the AG…
We present high speed ULTRACAM photometry of the eclipsing post common envelope binaries DE CVn, GK Vir, NN Ser, QS Vir, RR Cae, RX J2130.6+4710, SDSS 0110+1326 and SDSS 0303+0054 and use these data to measure precise mid-eclipse times in order to detect any period variations. We detect a large (~ 250 sec) departure from linearity in the eclipse times of QS Vir which Applegate's mechanism fails to reproduce by an order of magnitude. The only mechanism able to drive this period change is a third body in a highly elliptical orbit. However, the planetary/sub-stellar companion previously suggested…
