We present observational confirmation of Hawking's black-hole area theorem based on data from GW150914, finding agreement with the prediction with 97% (95%) probability when we model the ringdown including (excluding) overtones of the quadrupolar mode. We obtain this result from a new time-domain analysis of the pre- and postmerger data. We also confirm that the inspiral and ringdown portions of the signal are consistent with the same remnant mass and spin, in agreement with general relativity.
Hawking's black hole area theorem can be tested by monitoring the evolution of a single black hole over time. Using current imaging observations of two supermassive black holes M87* and Sgr A* from the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT), we find their horizon area variation fractions are consistent with the prediction of the black hole area law at the $1\,σ$ confidence level. We point out that whether the black hole area law is valid or not could be determined by future high precision EHT observations of Sgr A*.
Recently an experiment has been performed for the purpose of "testing the area law with GW150914". As the experimenters put it, the experiment presents "observational confirmation" of Hawking's area law based on the GW150914 data. It is the purpose of this paper to philosophically examine the test of the area law and to show that the area law is not confirmable yet is falsifiable. Accordingly, the GW150914 data do not confirm Hawking's area law. What has been tested with positive results was the hypothesis A3 > A1 + A2, where A3 = GW150914 remnant and A1 + A2 = GW150914 merger. But this single…
We examine a simple tabletop experimental setup for probing the inverse-square law of gravity and detecting eventual deviations therefrom. The nature of the setup allows indeed to effectively reach for shorter distances compared to what is allowed by other methods. Furthermore, we show that the same setup could also in principle be used to probe the interaction between gravitomagnetism and the intrinsic angular spin of quantum particles. Moreover, we show that the setup allows to have a gravitationally induced harmonic oscillator, introducing thus the possibility of studying in a novel way the…
Based on the perspective that continuum gravitational physics is an emergent quantum gravitational phenomenon, and that spacetime thermodynamic is the natural langauge in which it can be described, we derive a modified Schwarzschild-de Sitter geometry in static coordinates from quantum gravity inspired logarithmic corrections to the entropy-area law. The resulting quantum corrections to classical geometry can be encoded in explicitly radius dependent black hole and cosmological constant parameters. By considering the pure black hole case we study linear perturbations on this modified backgroun…
By dropping particles into black hole, we have employed the recently new assumption [1] that the change of the black hole mass(enthalpy) should be the same amount as the energy of an infalling particle($ω= dM$), to carefully test the laws of thermodynamics and the weak cosmic censorship conjecture of a conformal anomaly corrected AdS black hole in different phase spaces. Using the energy-momentum relation, the result shows that the first law, second law and weak cosmic censorship conjecture of black hole are all valid in the normal phase space, no violations occur. In the extended phase space,…
The Rényi and Tsallis entropies are discussed as possible alternatives to the Bekenstein-Hawking area-law entropy. It is pointed out how replacing the entropy notion, but not the Hawking temperature and the thermodynamical energy may render the whole black hole thermodynamics inconsistent. The possibility to relate the Rényi and Tsallis entropies with the quantum gravity corrected Bekenstein-Hawking entropy is discussed.
The Hubble law (HL) governs the low-redshift (low-z) evolution of the distance of an object. However, there is a lack of an investigation of its validity and effective radius for a long time, since the low-z background data with a high precision is scarce. The latest Type Ia supernovae sample Pantheon+ having a significant increase of low-z data provides an excellent opportunity to test the HL. We propose a generalized HL and implement the first modern test of the HL with Pantheon+. We obtain the constraint on the deviation parameter $α=1.00118\pm0.00044$, confirm the validity of linear HL wit…
An entanglement-area law for general bosonic harmonic lattice systems
Rev. Lett. 94,060503(2005)]。
