Terahertz (THz) massive multiple-input multipleoutput (MIMO) has been considered as one of the promising technologies for future 6G wireless communications. It is essential to obtain channel information by beam tracking scheme to track mobile users in THz massive MIMO systems. However, the existing beam tracking schemes designed for narrowband systems with the traditional hybrid precoding structure suffer from a severe performance loss caused by the beam split effect, and thus cannot be directly applied to wideband THz massive MIMO systems. To solve this problem, in this paper we propose a beam zooming based beam tracking scheme by considering the recently proposed delay-phase precoding structure for THz massive MIMO. Specifically, we firstly prove the beam zooming mechanism to flexibly control the angular coverage of frequencydependent beams over the whole bandwidth, which can be realized by the elaborate design of time delays in the delay-phase precoding structure. Then, based on this beam zooming mechanism, we propose to track multiple user physical directions simultaneously in each time slot by generating multiple beams. The angular coverage of these beams is flexibly zoomed to adapt to the potential variation range of the user physical direction. After several time slots, the base station is able to obtain the exact user physical direction by finding out the beam with the largest user received power. Unlike traditional schemes where only one frequency-independent beam can be usually generated by one radio-frequency chain, the proposed beam zooming based beam tracking scheme can simultaneously track multiple user physical directions by using multiple frequency-dependent beams generated by one radio-frequency chain. Theoretical analysis shows that the proposed scheme can achieve the near-optimal achievable sum-rate performance with low beam training overhead.

This paper investigates the parametric extrapolation of wideband MIMO channels using variations of the double directional MIMO model. We propose three predictors which estimate parameters of the channel using 4D, 3D and 2D extensions of the ESPRIT algorithm and predict future states of the channel using the models. Furthermore, using the vector formulation of the Cramer Rao lower bound for functions of parameter…
Following recent advances in terahertz (THz) technology, there is a consensus on the crucial role of THz communications in the next generation of wireless systems. Aiming at catalyzing THz communications research, we propose TeraMIMO, an accurate stochastic MATLAB simulator of statistical THz channels. We simulate ultra-massive multiple-input multiple-output antenna configurations as critical infrastructure enablers that overcome the limitation in THz communications distances. We consider both line-of-sight and multipath components and propose frequency- and delay-domain implementations for si…
When there are a large number of antennas in massive MIMO systems, the transmitted wideband signal will be sensitive to the physical propagation delay of electromagnetic waves across the large array aperture, which is called the spatial-wideband effect. In this scenario, transceiver design is different from most of the existing works, which presume that the bandwidth of the transmitted signals is not that wide, ignore the spatial-wideband effect, and only address the frequency selectivity. In this paper, we investigate spatial- and frequency-wideband effects, called dual-wideband effects, in m…
The sixth-generation networks envision the terahertz (THz) band as one of the key enabling technologies because of its ultrawide bandwidth. To combat the severe attenuation, the THz wireless systems employ large arrays, wherein the near-field beam-split (NB) severely degrades the accuracy of channel acquisition. Contrary to prior works that examine only either narrowband beamforming or far-field models, we estimate the wideband THz channel via an NB-aware orthogonal matching pursuit (NBA-OMP) approach. We design an NBA dictionary of near-field steering vectors by exploiting the corresponding a…
In this paper, we study the performance of wideband terahertz (THz) communications assisted by an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS). Specifically, we first introduce a generalized channel model that is suitable for electrically large THz IRSs operating in the near-field. Unlike prior works, our channel model takes into account the spherical wavefront of the emitted electromagnetic waves and the spatial-wideband effect. We next show that conventional frequency-flat beamfocusing significantly reduces the power gain due to beam squint, and hence is highly suboptimal. More importantly, we analy…
We consider a multiple-input, multiple-output (MIMO) wideband Rayleigh block fading channel where the channel state is unknown to both the transmitter and the receiver and there is only an average power constraint on the input. We compute the capacity and analyze its dependence on coherence length, number of antennas and receive signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) per degree of freedom. We establish conditions on the coherence length and number of antennas for the non-coherent channel to have a "near coherent" performance in the wideband regime. We also propose a signaling scheme that is near-capacity…
Analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) stand for a significant part of the total power consumption in a massive MIMO base station. One-bit ADCs are one way to reduce power consumption. This paper presents an analysis of the spectral efficiency of single-carrier and OFDM transmission in massive MIMO systems that use one-bit ADCs. A closed-form achievable rate, i.e., a lower bound on capacity, is derived for a wideband system with a large number of channel taps that employs low-complexity linear channel estimation and symbol detection. Quantization results in two types of error in the symbol detect…
This paper presents the impact of frequency diversity on the optimum expected end-to-end distortion (EED) in an outage-free wideband multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system. We provide the closed-form expression of optimum asymptotic expected EED comprised of the optimum distortion exponent and the multiplicative optimum distortion factor for high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). It is shown that frequency diversity can improve EED though it has no effect on ergodic capacity. The improvement becomes slight when the frequency diversity order is greater than a certain number. The lower bounds r…
Millimeter-wave/Terahertz (mmW/THz) communications have shown great potential for wideband massive access in next-generation cellular internet of things (IoT) networks. To decrease the length of pilot sequences and the computational complexity in wideband massive access, this paper proposes a novel joint activity detection and channel estimation (JADCE) algorithm. Specifically, after formulating JADCE as a problem of recovering a simultaneously sparse-group and low rank matrix according to the characteristics of mmW/THz channel, we prove that jointly imposing $l_1$ norm and low rank on such a …
The recently introduced atomic norm minimization (ANM) framework for parameter estimation is a promising candidate towards low overhead channel estimation in wireless communications. However, previous works on ANM-based channel estimation evaluated performance on channels with artificially imposed channel path separability, which cannot be guaranteed in practice. In addition, direct application of the ANM framework for massive MIMO channel estimation is computationally infeasible due to the large dimensions. In this paper, a low-complexity ANM-based channel estimator for wideband massive MIMO …
In this letter, we investigate time-domain channel estimation for wideband millimeter wave (mmWave) MIMO OFDM system. By transmitting frequency-domain pilot symbols as well as different beamforming vectors, we observe that the time-domain mmWave MIMO channels exhibit channel delay sparsity and especially block sparsity among different spatial directions. Then we propose a time-domain channel estimation exploiting block sparsity (TDCEBS) scheme, which always aims at finding the best nonzero block achieving the largest projection of the residue at each iterations. In particular, we evaluate the …
Extremely large-scale multiple-input-multiple-output (XL-MIMO) at millimeter-wave (mmWave) and terahertz (THz) bands plays an important role in supporting extreme high beamforming gain as well as ultra-wideband spectrum resources. Unfortunately, accurate wideband XL-MIMO channel estimation suffers from the new challenge called as the near-field beam split effect. Prior works either neglect the accurate near-field channel model or fail to exploit the beam split effect, resulting in poor channel estimation accuracy for wideband XL-MIMO. To tackle this problem, this paper proposes a bilinear patt…
Millimeter-wave (mmWave) communication is considered as an indispensable technique for the next-generation backhaul/fronthaul network thanks to its large transmission bandwidth. Especially for heterogeneous network (HetNet), the mmWave full-dimension (FD)-MIMO is exploited to establish the backhaul/fronthaul link between phantom-cell base stations (BSs) and macro-cell BSs, where an efficient precoding is prerequisite. Against this background, this paper proposes a principle component analysis (PCA)-based hybrid precoding for wideband mmWave MIMO backhaul/fronthaul channels. We first propose an…
In this paper, we investigate noncoherent multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) ultra-wideband (UWB) systems where the signal is encoded by differential space-time block code (DSTBC). DSTBC enables noncoherent MIMO UWB systems to achieve diversity gain. However, the traditional noncoherent symbol-by-symbol differential detection (DD) for DSTBC-UWB suffers from performance degradation compared with the coherent detection. We introduce a noncoherent multiple symbol detection (MSD) scheme to enhance the performance of DSTBC-UWB system. Although the MSD scheme can boost the performance more as the…
In this paper, a novel two-dimensional (2D) non-stationary wideband geometry-based stochastic model (GBSM) for massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication systems is proposed. Key characteristics of massive MIMO channels such as near field effects and cluster evolution along the array are addressed in this model. Near field effects are modelled by a second-order approximation to spherical wavefronts, i.e., parabolic wavefronts, leading to linear drifts of the angles of multipath components (MPCs) and non-stationarity along the array. Cluster evolution along the array involving …
The problem of excessive pilot overhead required for uplink massive MIMO channel estimation is well known, let alone when it is considered along with wideband (OFDM) transmissions. Towards channel estimators that are both efficient and require low-training overhead, compressive sensing (CS) approaches have been increasingly popular, exploiting the sparse nature of the physical channel. However, no analytical insights regarding the overhead required for reliable channel estimation in wideband massive MIMO are available. By observing that the wideband massive MIMO channel can be represented by a…
In terahertz (THz) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, the combination of huge bandwidth and massive antennas results in severe beam split, thus making the conventional phase-shifter based hybrid precoding architecture ineffective. With the incorporation of true-time-delay (TTD) lines in the hardware implementation of the analog precoders, delay-phase precoding (DPP) emerges as a promising architecture to effectively overcome beam split. However, existing DPP approaches suffer from poor performance, high complexity, and weak robustness in practical THz channels. In this pape…
In this paper, a novel two-dimensional super-resolution angle-of-departure (AoD) and angle-of-arrival (AoA) estimation technique is proposed for wideband millimeter-wave multiple-input multiple-output systems with cross-polarized antenna elements. The key ingredient of the proposed method is to form custom designed beam pairs, and devise an invertible function of the AoD/AoA to be estimated from the corresponding beam pairs. Further, a new multi-layer reference signal structure is developed for the proposed method to facilitate angle estimation for wideband channels with cross-polarized antenn…
Terahertz (THz) communication is considered to be a promising technology for future 6G network. To overcome the severe attenuation and relieve the high power consumption, massive MIMO with hybrid precoding has been widely considered for THz communication. However, accurate wideband channel estimation is challenging in THz massive MIMO systems. The existing wideband channel estimation schemes based on the ideal assumption of common sparse channel support will suffer from a severe performance loss due to the beam split effect. In this paper, we propose a beam split pattern detection based channe…
Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RISs) are an emerging technology for future wireless communication systems, enabling improved coverage in an energy efficient manner. RISs are usually metasurfaces, constituting of two-dimensional arrangements of metamaterial elements, whose individual response is commonly modeled in the literature as an adjustable phase shifter. However, this model holds only for narrowband communications, and when wideband transmissions are utilized, one has to account for the frequency selectivity of metamaterials, whose response usually follows a Lorentzian-like profile…
With the increasing scale of antenna arrays in wideband millimeter-wave (mmWave) communications, the physical propagation delays of electromagnetic waves traveling across the whole array will become large and comparable to the time-domain sample period, which is known as the spatial-wideband effect. In this case, different subcarriers in an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system will "see" distinct angles of arrival (AoAs) for the same path. This effect is known as beam squint, resulting from the spatial-wideband effect, and makes the approaches based on the conventional mult…
In this paper, we study the effects of the variations of the propagation delay over large-scale antenna-arrays used in massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wideband communication systems on the statistical properties of the channel. Due to its simplicity and popularity, the Elliptical geometry-based stochastic channel model (GBSM) is employed to demonstrate new non-stationary properties of the channel in the frequency and spatial domains caused by the drift of delays. In addition, we show that the time of travel of multi-path components (MPCs) over large-scale arrays may result in ove…
This paper proposes a novel approach for designing channel estimation, beamforming and scheduling jointly for wideband massive multiple input multiple output (MIMO) systems. With the proposed approach, we first quantify the maximum number of user equipments (UEs) that can send pilots which may or may not be orthogonal. Specifically, when the channel has a maximum of $L$ multipath taps, and we allocate $\tilde{M}$ sub-carriers for the channel state information (CSI) estimation, a maximum of $\tilde{M}$ UEs CSI can be estimated ($L$ times compared to the conventional CSI estimation approach) in …
Distributed phased arrays based multiple-input multiple-output (DPA-MIMO) is a recently proposed highly reconfigurable architecture enabling both spatial multiplexing and beamforming in millimeter-wave (mmWave) systems. In this work, we focus on coping with the hybrid precoding for the wideband DPA-MIMO system with orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) modulation. More specifically, we propose an alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) enabled hybrid precoding approach based on an alternating optimization framework, abbreviated to ADMM-AltMin, for such cooperative array-…
In this article, we investigate channel estimation for wideband millimeter-wave (mmWave) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) under hybrid architecture with lowprecision analog-to-digital converters (ADCs). To design channel estimation for the hybrid structure, both analog processing components and frequency-selective digital combiners need to be optimized. The proposed channel estimator follows the typical linear-minimum-mean-square-error (LMMSE) structure and applies for an arbitrary channel model. Moreover, for sparsity channels as in mmWave, the proposed estimator performs more ef…
Hybrid analog/digital precoding architectures can address the trade-off between achievable spectral efficiency and power consumption in large-scale MIMO systems. This makes it a promising candidate for millimeter wave systems, which require deploying large antenna arrays at both the transmitter and receiver to guarantee sufficient received signal power. Most prior work on hybrid precoding focused on narrowband channels and assumed fully-connected hybrid architectures. MmWave systems, though, are expected to be wideband with frequency selectivity. In this paper, a closed-form solution for fully…
In this paper, we propose a wideband Full Duplex (FD) Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) communication system comprising of an FD MIMO node simultaneously communicating with two multi-antenna UpLink (UL) and DownLink (DL) nodes utilizing the same time and frequency resources. To suppress the strong Self-Interference (SI) signal due to simultaneous transmission and reception in FD MIMO systems, we propose a joint design of Analog and Digital (A/D) cancellation as well as transmit and receive beamforming capitalizing on baseband Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiplexing (OFDM) signal modelin…
In this paper, a channel estimator for wideband millimeter wave (mmWave) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with hybrid architectures and low-resolution analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) is proposed. To account for the propagation delay across the antenna array, which cannot be neglected in wideband mmWave massive MIMO systems, the discrete time channel that models the spatial wideband effect is developed. Also, the training signal design that addresses inter-frame, inter-user, and inter-symbol interferences is investigated when the spatial wideband effect is not negligibl…
Numerous linear and non-linear data-detection and precoding algorithms for wideband massive multi-user (MU) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless systems that rely on orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) or single-carrier frequency-division multiple access (SC-FDMA) require the computation of the Gram matrix for each active subcarrier. Computing the Gram matrix for each active subcarrier, however, results in excessively high computational complexity. In this paper, we propose novel, approximate algorithms that significantly reduce the complexity of Gram-matrix computation…
In this paper, we compare the performance of two main MIMO techniques, beamforming and multiplexing, in the Terahertz (THz) band. The main problem with the THz band is its huge propagation loss, which is caused by the tremendous signal attenuation due to molecule absorption of the electro-magnetic wave. To overcome the path loss issue, massive MIMO has been suggested to be employed in the network and is expected to provide Tbps for a distance within a few meters. In this context, beamforming is studied recently as the main technique to take advantage of MIMO in THz and overcome the very high p…

The sparse nature of the mmWave virtual channel in the angular and delay domains is exploited to convert the maximum a posteriori (MAP) channel estimation problem to an optimization problem with a concave objective function and sparsity constraint. The FCFGS algorithm, which is the generalized orthogonal matching pursu…
Are Stacked Intelligent Metasurfaces (SIMs) Better than Single-layer Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RISs) for Wideband Multi-user MIMO Communication Systems?
In wideband millimeter wave (mmWave) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, channel estimation is challenging due to the hybrid analog-digital architecture, which compresses the received pilot signal and makes channel estimation a compressive sensing (CS) problem. However, existing high-performance CS algorithms usually suffer from high complexity. On the other hand, the beam squint effect caused by huge bandwidth and massive antennas will deteriorate estimation performance. In this paper, frequency-dependent angular dictionaries are first adopted to compensate for beam squint.…
Benefiting from tens of GHz bandwidth, terahertz (THz) communication is considered to be a promising technology to provide ultra-high speed data rates for future 6G wireless systems. To compensate for the serious propagation attenuation of THz signals, massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) with hybrid precoding can be utilized to generate directional beams with high array gains. However, the standard hybrid precoding architecture based on frequency-independent phase-shifters cannot cope with the beam split effect in THz massive MIMO systems, where the directional beams will split into …
In this paper, we apply angle-domain Doppler compensation for high-mobility wideband massive multi-input multi-output (MIMO) uplink transmission. The time-varying multipath channel is considered between high-speed terminal and static base station (BS), where multiple Doppler frequency offsets (DFOs) are associated with distinct angle of departures (AoDs). With the aid of the large-scale uniform linear array (ULA) at the transmitter, we design a beamforming network to generate multiple parallel beamforming branches, each transmitting signal pointing to one particular angle. Then, the transmitte…
In this paper, a multi-frequency multi-link three-dimensional (3D) non-stationary wideband multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel model is proposed. The spatial consistency and multi-frequency correlation are considered in parameters initialization of every single-link and different frequencies, including large scale parameters (LSPs) and small scale parameters (SSPs). Moreover, SSPs are time-variant and updated when scatterers and the receiver (Rx) are moving. The temporal evolution of clusters is modeled by birth and death processes. We propose beam division multiple access (BDMA) with per-beam synchronization (PBS) in time and frequency for wideband massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmission over millimeter-wave (mmW)/Terahertz (THz) bands. We first introduce a physically motivated beam domain channel model for massive MIMO and demonstrate that the envelopes of the beam domain channel elements tend to be independent of time and frequency when both the numbers of antennas at base station and user terminals (UTs) tend to infinity. Motivated by the derived beam domain channel properties, we then propose PBS f…
The acquisition of channel state information (CSI) in Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) massive MIMO has been a formidable challenge. In this paper, we address this problem with a novel CSI feedback framework enabled by the partial reciprocity of uplink and downlink channels in the wideband regime. We first derive the closed-form expression of the rank of the wideband massive MIMO channel covariance matrix for a given angle-delay distribution. A low-rankness property is identified, which generalizes the well-known result of the narrow-band uniform linear array setting. Then we propose a partial …
We consider a massive MIMO system based on Time Division Duplexing (TDD) and channel reciprocity, where the base stations (BSs) learn the channel vectors of their users via the pilots transmitted by the users in the uplink (UL). It is well-known that, in the limit of very large number of BS antennas, the system performance is limited by pilot contamination, due to the fact that the same set of orthogonal pilots is reused in multiple cells. In this paper, we propose a low-complexity algorithm that uses the received UL wideband pilot snapshots in an observation window comprising several coherenc…
Terahertz (THz) communications with a frequency band $0.1-10$ THz are envisioned as a promising solution to future high-speed wireless communication. Although with tens of gigahertz available bandwidth, THz signals suffer from severe free-spreading loss and molecular-absorption loss, which limit the wireless transmission distance. To compensate for the propagation loss, the ultra-massive multiple-input-multiple-output (UM-MIMO) can be applied to generate a high-gain directional beam by beamforming technologies. In this paper, a review of beamforming technologies for THz UM-MIMO systems is prov…
In this work, the uplink channel estimation problem is considered for a millimeter wave (mmWave) multi-input multi-output (MIMO) system. It is well known that pilot overhead and computation complexity in estimating the channel increases with the number of antennas and the bandwidth. To overcome this, the proposed approach allows the channel estimation at the base station to be aided by the sensing information. The sensing information contains an estimate of scatterers locations in an environment. A simultaneous weighting orthogonal matching pursuit (SWOMP) - sparse Bayesian learning (SBL) algo…
Millimeter-wave (mmW)/Terahertz (THz) wideband communication employing a large-scale antenna array is a promising technique of the sixth-generation (6G) wireless network for realizing massive machine-type communications (mMTC). In particular, by exploiting the simultaneously sparse and low-rank structure of mmW/THz channels with spreads in the delay-angular domain, we propose two multi-ran…
This paper proposes a closed-loop sparse channel estimation (CE) scheme for wideband millimeter-wave hybrid full-dimensional multiple-input multiple-output and time division duplexing based systems, which exploits the channel sparsity in both angle and delay domains. At the downlink CE stage, random transmit precoder is designed at base station (BS) for channel sounding, and receive combiners at user devices (UDs) are designed to visualize hybrid array as a low-dimensional digital array for facilitating the multi-dimensional unitary ESPRIT (MDU-ESPRIT) algorithm to estimate respective angle-of…
Terahertz (THz) communication is widely considered as a key enabler for future 6G wireless systems. However, THz links are subject to high propagation losses and inter-symbol interference due to the frequency selectivity of the channel. Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) along with orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) can be used to deal with these problems. Nevertheless, when the propagation delay across the base station (BS) antenna array exceeds the symbol period, the spatial response of the BS array varies across the OFDM subcarriers. This phenomenon, known as beam …
