We study equivariant sheaves over profinite spaces, where the group is also taken to be profinite. We resolve a serious deficit in the existing theory by constructing a good notion of equivariant presheaves, with a suitable equivariant sheafification functor. Using equivariant sheafification, we develop the general theory of equivariant sheaves of modules over a ring, give explicit constructions of infinite products and introduce an equivariant analogue of skyscraper sheaves.
These results underlie recent work by the authors which proves that there is an algebraic model for rational G-spectra in terms of equivariant sheaves over profinite spaces. That model is constructed in terms of Weyl-G-sheaves over the space of closed subgroups of G, where the term Weyl indicates that the stalk over H is H-fixed. In this paper, we prove that Weyl-G-sheaves of R-modules form an abelian category with enough injectives and is a coreflective subcategory of equivariant sheaves of R-modules.
We end the paper with a structural result that provides another way to conveniently build equivariant sheaves from simpler data. We prove that a G-equivariant sheaf over a profinite base space X is a colimit of equivariant sheaves over finite discrete spaces X_i with actions of finite groups G_i, where X is the limit of the X_i and G is the limit of the G_i.
For G a profinite group, we construct an equivalence between rational G-Mackey functors and a certain full subcategory of G-sheaves over the space of closed subgroups of G called Weyl-G-sheaves. This subcategory consists of those sheaves whose stalk over a subgroup K is K-fixed. This extends the classification of rational G-Mackey functors for finite G of Thévenaz and Webb, and Greenlees and May to a new class of examples. Moreover, this equivalence is instrumental in the classification of rational G-spectra for profinite G, as given in the second author's thesis.
We study profinite completion of spaces in the model category of profinite spaces and construct a rigidification of the completion functors of Artin-Mazur and Sullivan which extends also to non-connected spaces. Another new aspect is an equivariant profinite completion functor and equivariant fibrant replacement functor for a profinite group acting on a space. This is crucial for applications where, for example, Galois groups are involved, or for profinite Teichmueller theory where equivariant completions are applied. Along the way we collect and survey the most important known results about p…
The Cantor-Bendixson rank of a topological space X is a measure of the complexity of the topology of X. The Cantor-Bendixson rank is most interesting when the space is profinite: Hausdorff, compact and totally disconnected. We will see that the injective dimension of the Abelian category of sheaves of rational vector spaces over a profinite space is determined by the Cantor-Bendixson rank of the space.
We prove that if G is the circle group or a profinite group, then the all of the homotopical information of the category of rational G-spectra is captured by triangulated structure of the rational G-equivariant stable homotopy category. That is, for G profinite or S1, the rational G-equivariant stable homotopy category is rigid. For the case of profinite groups this rigidity comes from an intrinsic formality statement, so we carefully relate the notion of intrinsic formality of a differential graded algebra to rigidity.
In this thesis we will investigate rational G-spectra for a profinite group G. We will provide an algebraic model for this model category whose injective dimension can be calculated in terms of the Cantor-Bendixson rank of the space of closed subgroups of G, denoted SG. The algebraic model we consider is chain complexes of Weyl-G-sheaves of rational vector spaces over the spaces. The key step in proving that this is an algebraic model for G-spectra is in proving that the category of rational G-Mackey functors is equivalent to Weyl-G-sheaves. In addition to the fact that this sheaf description …
In this paper, we develop the theory of equivariant motivic homotopy theory, both unstable and stable. While our original interest was in the case of profinite group actions on smooth schemes, we discuss our results in as broad a setting as possible so as to be applicable in a variety of contexts, for example to the case of smooth group scheme actions on schemes that are not necessarily smooth. We also discuss how ${\mathbb A}^1$-localization behaves with respect to mod-$\ell$-completion, where $\ell$ is a fixed prime.
If K is a discrete group and Z is a K-spectrum, then the homotopy fixed point spectrum Z^{hK} is Map_*(EK_+, Z)^K, the fixed points of a familiar expression. Similarly, if G is a profinite group and X is a discrete G-spectrum, then X^{hG} is often given by (H_{G,X})^G, where H_{G,X} is a certain explicit construction given by a homotopy limit in the category of discrete G-spectra. Thus, in each of two common equivariant settings, the homotopy fixed point spectrum is equal to the fixed points of an explicit object in the ambient equivariant category. We enrich this pattern by proving in a preci…
We extend the theory of equivariant orthogonal spectra from finite groups to profinite groups, and more generally from compact Lie groups to compact Hausdorff groups. The G-homotopy theory is "pieced together" from the G/U-homotopy theories for suitable quotient groups G/U of G; a motivation is the way continuous group cohomology of a profinite group is built out of the cohomology of its finite quotient groups. In the model category of equivariant spectra Postnikov towers are studied from a general perspective. We introduce pro-G-spectra and construct various model structures on them. A key pr…
We examine the geometry of loop spaces in derived algebraic geometry and extend in several directions the well known connection between rotation of loops and the de Rham differential. Our main result, a categorification of the geometric description of cyclic homology, relates S^1-equivariant quasicoherent sheaves on the loop space of a smooth scheme or geometric stack X in characteristic zero with sheaves on X with flat connection, or equivalently D_X-modules. By deducing the Hodge filtration on de Rham modules from the formality of cochains on the circle, we are able to recover D_X-modules pr…
Let T be a compact torus and X a nice compact T-space (say a manifold or variety). We introduce a functor assigning to X a "GKM-sheaf" F_X over a "GKM-hypergraph" G_X. Under the condition that X is equivariantly formal, the ring of global sections of F_X are identified with the equivariant cohomology, H_T^*(X; C). We show that GKM-sheaves provide a general framework able to incorporate numerous constructions in the GKM-theory literature. In the second half of the paper we apply these ideas to study the equivariant topology of the representation variety R_K := Hom(π_1(S), K) under conjugation b…
We prove sign-alternation of the structure constants in the basis of structure sheaves of opposite Schubert varieties in the torus-equivariant Grothendieck group of coherent sheaves on the flag varieties $G/P$ associated to an arbitrary symmetrizable Kac-Moody group $G$, where $P$ is any parabolic subgroup. This generalizes the work of Anderson-Griffeth-Miller from the finite case to the general Kac-Moody case, and affirmatively answers a conjecture of Lam-Schilling-Shimozono regarding the signs of the structure constants in the case of the affine Grassmannian.
Let G be a non-finite profinite group and let G-Sets_{df} be the canonical site of finite discrete G-sets. Then the category R^+_G, defined by Devinatz and Hopkins, is the category obtained by considering G-Sets_{df} together with the profinite G-space G itself, with morphisms being continuous G-equivariant maps. We show that R^+_G is a site when equipped with the pretopology of epimorphic covers. Also, we explain why the associated topology on R^+_G is not subcanonical, and hence, not canonical. We note that, since R^+_G is a site, there is automatically a model category structure on the cate…
We consider a hyperplane arrangement in $\mathbb{C}^n$ defined over $\mathbb{R}$, and the associated natural stratification of $\mathbb{C}^n$. The category of perverse sheaves smooth with respect to this stratification was described by Kapranov and Schechtman in terms of quiver representations. Using work of Weissman, we reinterpret this category as the category of finite-dimensional modules over an explicit algebra. We also describe recollement (open-closed decomposition) of perverse sheaves in terms of this module category. As an application, we identify the modules associated to all interse…
We continue the approach toward a purely combinatorial "virtual" intersection cohomology for possibly non-rational fans, based on our investigation of equivariant intersection cohomology for toric varieties (see math.AG/9904159). Fundamental objects of study are "minimal extension sheaves" on "fan spaces". These are flabby sheaves of graded modules over a sheaf of polynomial rings, satisfying three relatively simple axioms that characterize the properties of the equivariant intersection cohomology sheaf on a toric variety, endowed with the finite topology given by open invariant subsets. These…
We construct an abelian category A(G) of sheaves over a category of closed subgroups of the r-torus G and show it is of finite injective dimension. It can be used as a model for rational $G$-spectra in the sense that there is a homology theory \piA_*: G-spectra/Q --> A(G) on rational G-spectra with values in A(G), and the associated Adams spectral sequence converges for all rational $G$-spectra and collapses at a finite stage.
