The existence of closed null circular geodesics around black holes is one of the most intriguing predictions of general relativity. It has recently been conjectured that the radii of black-hole photonspheres are bounded from below by the simple relation $r_{\text{ph}}\geq {3\over2}r_{\text{H}}$, where $r_{\text{H}}$ is the radius of the outer black-hole horizon. We here prove the validity of this conjecture for spherically symmetric hairy black-hole configurations whose radial pressure function $P\equiv |r^3p|$ decreases monotonically.
One of the most remarkable predictions of the general theory of relativity is the existence of black-hole "photonspheres", compact null hypersurfaces on which massless particles can orbit the central black hole. We prove that every spherically-symmetric asymptotically flat black-hole spacetime is characterized by a photonsphere whose radius is bounded from above by $r_γ \leq 3M$, where $M$ is the total ADM mass of the black-hole spacetime. It is shown that hairy black-hole configurations conform to this upper bound. In particular, the null circular geodesic of the (bald) Schwarzschild black-ho…
We investigate the photonsphere in the background of regular asymptotically flat compact stars. The analysis includes the general hairy compact star considering the matter fields' backreaction on the metric in various gravity theories. We prove that the photonsphere of the compact star has an upper bound expressed in terms of the ADM mass of the spacetime. In the case of negative isotropic trace, a stronger upper bound can be obtained.
The recently proved `no short hair' theorem asserts that, if a spherically-symmetric static black hole has hair, then this hair (the external fields) must extend beyond the null circular geodesic (the "photonsphere") of the corresponding black-hole spacetime: $r_{\text{field}}>r_{\text{null}}$. In this paper we provide compelling evidence that the bound can be {\it violated} by {\it non}-spherically symmetric hairy black-hole configurations. To that end, we analytically explore the physical properties of cloudy Kerr-Newman black-hole spacetimes -- charged rotating black holes which support lin…
Using numerical methods, we investigate the absorption properties of a family of nonsingular solutions {which arise in different metric-affine theories, such as quadratic and Born-Infeld gravity.} These solutions continuously interpolate between Schwarzschild black holes and naked solitons with wormhole topology. The resulting spectrum is characterized by a series of quasibound states excitations, associated with the existence of a stable photonsphere.
We study hair mass distributions in noncommutative Einstein-Born-Infeld hairy black holes with non-zero cosmological constants. We find that the larger noncommutative parameter makes the hair easier to condense in the near horizon area. We also show that Hod's lower bound can be evaded in the noncommutative gravity. However, for large black holes with a non-negative cosmological constant, Hod's lower hair mass bound almost holds in the sense that nearly half of the hair lays above the photonsphere.
We study mass bounds of Maxwell fields in RN black holes and genuine hair in Einstein-Born-Infeld black holes with various cosmological constants. It shows that the Maxwell field serves as a good probe to disclose the hair distribution described with the event horizon and the photonsphere. And we find that the Hod's lower bound obtained in asymptotically flat space also holds in the asymptotically dS Einstein-Born-Infeld hairy black holes. In contrast, the Hod's lower bound can be invaded in the asymptotically AdS Einstein-Born-Infeld hairy black holes. It implies that the AdS boundary could m…
Ultracompact objects with photonspheres are known to mimic many observational features of black holes. It has been suggested that anomalous tidal heating or the presence of resonances in gravitational wave signals would be a clear imprint of a surface or absence of a horizon. Such claims and studies are all based on a frequency-domain analysis, assuming stationarity. Here we show that the object needs to first "fuel-up" until it reaches the stationary regime. The presence of a stable light ring and large light-travel times inside the object may in fact delay enormously the "charging-up" and ef…
We consider the following question: may two different black holes (BHs) cast exactly the same shadow? In spherical symmetry, we show the necessary and sufficient condition for a static BH to be shadow-degenerate with Schwarzschild is that the dominant photonsphere of both has the same impact parameter, when corrected for the (potentially) different redshift of comparable observers in the different spacetimes. Such shadow-degenerate geometries are classified into two classes. The first shadow-equivalent class contains metrics whose constant (areal) radius hypersurfaces are isometric to those of…
We review the equations determining the photon sphere radius and the black hole shadow radius, and calculate the cosmological constant corrections arising when the dark energy action has the usual form, and when dark energy arises from a Weyl scaling invariant dark energy action. For black hole targets of the Event Horizon Telescope, the corrections are very small.
One of the most important geodesics in a black-hole spacetime is the marginally bound spherical orbit. This critical geodesic represents the innermost spherical orbit which is bound to the central black hole. The radii $r_{\text{mb}}({\bar a})$ of the marginally bound {\it equatorial} circular geodesics of rotating Kerr black holes were found analytically by Bardeen {\it et. al.} more than four decades ago (here $\bar a\equiv J/M^2$ is the dimensionless angular-momentum of the black hole). On the other hand, no closed-form formula exists in the literature for the radii of generic ({\it non}-eq…
In this paper, we examine the effect of dark matter to a Kerr black hole of mass $m$. The metric is derived using the Newman-Janis algorithm, where the seed metric originates from the Schwarzschild black hole surrounded by a spherical shell of dark matter with mass $M$ and thickness $Δr_{s}$. The seed metric is also described in terms of a piecewise mass function with three different conditions. Specializing in the non-trivial case where the observer resides inside the dark matter shell, we analyzed how the effective mass of the black hole environment affects the basic black hole properties. A…
We investigate the relationship between shadow radii (photosphere radii) and black hole microstructures for a static spherically symmetric black hole and confirm their close connection. As a concrete analysis, we take the Reissner-Nordstr$\mathrm{\ddot{o}}$m AdS black hole surrounded by perfect fluid dark matter (RN AdS black hole surrounded by PFDM) as an example. We calculate the Ruppeiner thermodynamic scalar curvature and shadow radius (photosphere radius) for the specific model. On the one hand, we find that the greater density of the perfect fluid dark matter makes black hole molecules m…
Exact formulas relating the radii of the spherical photon orbits to the black hole's rotation parameter and the effective inclination angle of the orbit have been known only for equatorial and polar orbits up to now. Here we provide exact formulas for nonequatorial orbits that lie between these extreme limits. For a given rotation parameter of the black hole, there is a critical inclination angle below which there are four null photon orbits two of which are in the exterior region. At the critical angle, the radii of these orbits are explicitly found. We also provide approximate but very accur…
Poincaré Gauge's theory of gravity is the most noteworthy alternative extension of general relativity that has a correspondence between spin and spacetime geometry. In this paper, we use Reissner-Nordstrom-de Sitter and anti-de Sitter solutions, where torsion $τ$ is added as an independent field, to analyze the weak deflection angles $\hatα$ of massive and null particles in finite distance regime. We then apply $\hatα$ to determine the Einstein ring formation in M87* and Sgr. A* and determine that relative to Earth's location from these black holes, massive torsion effects can provide consider…
In this paper, we calculate the analytical solutions for the radii of planar and polar spherical photon orbits around a rotating black hole that is associated with quintessential field and cloud of strings. This includes a full analytical treatment of a quintic that describes orbits on the equatorial plane. Furthermore, The radial profile of the impact parameters is studied and the radii corresponding to the extreme cases are derived. For the more general cases, we also discuss the photon regions that form around this black hole. To simulate the orbits that appear in different inclinations, we…
Constraints via the Event Horizon Telescope for Black Hole Solutions with Dark Matter under the Generalized Uncertainty Principle Minimal Length Scale Effect
Dynamics in the throat of rapidly rotating Kerr black holes is governed by an emergent near-horizon conformal symmetry. The throat contains unstable circular orbits at radii extending from the ISCO down to the light ring. We show that they are related by conformal transformations to physical plunges and osculating trajectories. These orbits have angular momentum arbitrarily higher than that of ISCO. Using the conformal symmetry we compute analytically the radiation produced by the physical orbits. We also present a simple formula for the full self-force on such trajectories in terms of the sel…
Spinning Kerr black holes are known to be superradiantly unstable to massive scalar perturbations. We here prove that the instability regime of the composed Kerr-black-hole-massive-scalar-field system is bounded from above by the dimensionless inequality $Mμ< m \cdot \sqrt{{{2(1+γ) (1-\sqrt{1-γ^2}) - γ^2} \over {4γ^2}}}$, where $\{μ,m\}$ are respectively the proper mass and azimuthal harmonic index of the scalar field and $γ\equiv r_-/r_+$ is the dimensionless ratio between the horizon radii of the black hole. It is further shown that this {\it analytically} derived upper bound on the superrad…
In this paper, we study rotating black holes in symmergent gravity, and use deviations from the Kerr black hole to constrain the parameters of the symmergent gravity. Symmergent gravity induces the gravitational constant $G$ and quadratic curvature coefficient $c_{\rm O}$ from the flat spacetime matter loops. In the limit in which all fields are degenerate in mass, the vacuum energy $V_{\rm O}$ can be wholly expressed in terms of $G$ and $c_{\rm O}$. We parametrize deviation from this degenerate limit by a parameter ${\hat α}$ such that the black hole spacetime is dS for ${\hat α} < 1$ and AdS…
The spherical photon orbits around a black hole with constant radii are particular important in astrophysical observations of the black hole. In this paper, the equatorial and non-equatorial spherical photon orbits around Kerr-Newman black holes are studied. The radii of these orbits satisfy a sextic polynomial equation with three parameters, the rotation parameter $u$, charge parameter $w$ and effective inclination angle $v$. It is found that there are two polar orbits and one is inside and the other is outside the event horizon. For orbits in the equatorial plane around an extremal Kerr-Newm…
It is well-known that the SU(2) Reissner-Nordström black-hole solutions of the Einstein-Yang-Mills theory are characterized by an infinite set of unstable (imaginary) eigenvalues $\{ω_n(T_{\text{BH}})\}_{n=0}^{n=\infty}$ (here $T_{\text{BH}}$ is the black-hole temperature). In this paper we analyze the excited instability spectrum of these magnetically charged black holes. The numerical results suggest the existence of a universal behavior for these black-hole excited eigenvalues. In particular, we show that unstable eigenvalues in the regime $ω_n\ll T_{\text{BH}}$ are characterized, to a very…
We study general properties of static and spherically symmetric bidiagonal black holes in Hassan-Rosen bimetric theory. In particular, we explore the behaviour of the black hole solutions both at the common Killing horizon and at the large radii. The former study leads to a new classification for black holes within the bidiagonal ansatz. The latter study shows that, among the great variety of the black hole solutions, the only solutions converging to Minkowski, Anti-de Sitter and de Sitter spacetimes at large radii are those of General Relativity, i.e., the Schwarzschild, Schwarzschild-Anti-de…
Accretion discs and black holes (BHs) have angular momenta that are generally misaligned with respect to each other, which can lead to warps in the discs and bends in any jets produced. We consider a disc that is misaligned at large radii and torqued by Lense-Thirring (LT) precession and a Blandford-Znajek (BZ) jet torque. We consider a variety of disc states that include radiatively inefficient thick discs, radiatively efficient thin discs, and super-Eddington accretion discs. The magnetic field strength of the BZ jet is chosen as either from standard equipartition arguments or from magnetica…
We investigate the shadows and photon spheres of the four-dimensional Gauss-Bonnet black hole with the static and infalling spherical accretions. We show that for both cases, the shadow and photon sphere are always present. The radii of the shadow and photon sphere are independent of the profiles of accretion for a fixed Gauss-Bonnet constant, implying that the shadow is a signature of the spacetime geometry and it is hardly influenced by accretion in this case. Because of the Doppler effect, the shadow of the infalling accretion is found to be darker than that of the static one. We also inves…
Gravitational lensing of a light source by a black hole leads to appearance of higher-order images produced by photons that loop around the black hole before reaching the observer. Higher-order images were widely investigated numerically and analytically, in particular using so-called strong deflection limit of gravitational deflection. After recent observations of the black hole image, attention has been drawn to higher-order rings, which are lensed images of the accreting matter of the black hole environment and can appear near the boundary of the black hole shadow. In this article, we use s…
Using the Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin (WKB) approximation we study the formation and propagation of quantum bound states in the vicinity of a Galileon black hole. We show that for given ranges of black hole horizon radii and of the derivative coupling which appears in the metric of the Galileon black hole, a Regge-Wheeler potential containing a local well is formed. Varying the strength of the derivative coupling we investigate the behaviour of the bound states trapped in the potential well or penetrating the horizon of the Galileon black hole.
In ApJ (1974), Will solved the perturbation of a Schwarzschild black hole due to a slowly rotating light concentric thin ring, using Green's functions expressed as infinite-sum expansions in multipoles and in the small mass and rotational parameters. In a previous paper (ApJS 2017, Paper I), we expressed the Green functions in closed form containing elliptic integrals, leaving just summation over the mass expansion. Such a form is more practical for numerical evaluation, but mainly for generalizing the problem to extended sources where the Green functions have to be integrated over the source.…
This article explores the characteristics of ergoregion, horizons and circular geodesics around a Kerr-Newman-Kasuya black hole. We investigate the effect of spin and dyonic charge parameters on ergoregion, event horizon and static limit surface of the said black hole. We observed that both electric, as well as magnetic charge parameters, results in decreasing the radii of event horizon and static limit, whereas increasing the area of ergoregion. The obtained results are compared with that acquired from Kerr and Schwarzschild black holes. Moreover, we figured out the photons orbit of circular …

Inner accretion disc around a black hole provides a rare, natural probe to understand the fundamental physics of the strong gravity regime. A possible tilt of such a disc, with respect to the black hole spin equator, is important. This is because such a tilt affects the observed spectral and timing properties of the disc X-ray emission via Lense-Thirring precession, which could be used to test the theoretical predictions regarding the strong gravity. Here, we analytically solve the steady, warped accretion disc equation of Scheurer and Feiler (1996), and find an expression of the radial profil…
