We study rapid-turn trajectories in a class of two-field cosmological models, whose scalar manifold is the Poincaré disk. Background solutions in multi-field inflation, with field-space trajectories exhibiting sharp turns, can seed primordial black hole (PBH) formation. We investigate a class of exact solutions with hidden symmetry and show that they exhibit the kind of transient rapid-turn period, needed to induce PBH generation. Furthermore, we relax the symmetry condition and find, in a certain regime, modified solutions with improved behavior of the Hubble $η$-parameter, which preserve the desired shape of the turning rate function. Interestingly, the modified solutions describe a brief ultra-slow roll phase, followed by long-term slow roll inflation. It is notable that slow roll occurs near the center (not near the boundary) of the Poincaré disk, unlike in the standard $α$-attractor case.
Effects of heavy fields on primordial spectra of curvature perturbations are discussed in inflationary models with a sudden turning trajectory. When heavy fields are excited after the sudden turn and oscillate around the bottom of the potential, the following two effects are generically induced: deformation of the inflationary background spacetime and conversion interactions between adiabatic and isocurvature perturbations, both of which can affect the primordial density perturbations. In this paper, we calculate primordial spectra in inflationary models with sudden turning potentials taking i…
We investigate the features generated by a sharp turn along the inflationary trajectory in a two-field model of Dirac-Born-Infeld inflation, where one of the fields is heavy. Distinct features are generated by two different effects: the mixing of the light and heavy modes during the turn, on the one hand, and the resonance between the oscillations along the heavy direction after the turn, on the other hand. Contrary to models with standard kinetic terms, the resonance effect is not strongly suppressed because the action contains derivative interactions. Working in the potential basis, we study…
We summarize our work on the generation of primordial black holes in a type of two-field inflationary models. The key ingredient is a sharp turn of the background trajectory in field space. We show that certain classes of solutions to the equations of motion exhibit precisely this kind of behavior. Among them we find solutions, which describe a transition between an ultra-slow roll and a slow roll phases of inflation.
We present a new realization of the resonant production of primordial black holes as well as gravitational waves in a two-stage inflation model consisting of a scalar field ϕwith an axion-monodromy-like periodic structure in the potential that governs the first stage and another field χwith a hilltop-like potential that dominates the second stage. The parametric resonance seeded by the periodic structure at the first stage amplifies the perturbations of both fields inside the Hubble radius. While the evolution of the background trajectory experiences a turn as the oscillatory barrier height in…
We study the generation of sharp features in the primordial spectra within the framework of effective field theory of inflation, wherein curvature perturbations are the consequence of the dynamics of a single scalar degree of freedom. We identify two sources in the generation of features: rapid variations of the sound speed c_s (at which curvature fluctuations propagate) and rapid variations of the expansion rate H during inflation. With this in mind, we propose a non-trivial relation linking these two quantities that allows us to study the generation of sharp features in realistic scenarios w…
The running of the Higgs self coupling may lead to numerous phenomena in early universe cosmology. In this paper we introduce a scenario where the Higgs running induces turns in the trajectory passing a region with tachyonic mass, leading to a temporal tachyonic growth in the curvature power spectrum. This effect induced by the Higgs leaves phenomena in the form of primordial black holes and stochastic gravitational waves, where proposed GW observatories will be able to probe in the near future.
Primordial black holes (PBHs) can be the source for all or a part of today's dark matter density. Inflation provides a mechanism for generating the seeds of PBHs in the presence of a temporal period where the velocity of an inflaton field $ϕ$ rapidly decreases toward 0. We compute the primordial power spectra of curvature perturbations generated during Gauss-Bonnet (GB) corrected Higgs inflation in which the inflaton field has not only a nonminimal coupling to gravity but also a GB coupling. For a scalar-GB coupling exhibiting a rapid change during inflation, we show that curvature perturbatio…
The inflationary origin of primordial black holes (PBHs) relies on a large enhancement of the power spectrum $Δ_ζ$ of the curvature fluctuation $ζ$ at wavelengths much shorter than those of the cosmic microwave background anisotropies. This is typically achieved in models where $ζ$ evolves without interacting significantly with additional (isocurvature) scalar degrees of freedom. However, quantum gravity inspired models are characterized by moduli spaces with highly curved geometries and a large number of scalar fields that could vigorously interact with $ζ$ (as in the cosmological collider pi…
There are well-known criteria on the potential and field-space geometry for determining if slow-roll, slow-turn, multi-field inflation is possible. However, even though it has been a topic of much recent interest, slow-roll, rapid-turn inflation only has such criteria in the restriction to two fields. In this work, we generalize the two-field, rapid-turn inflationary attractor to an arbitrary number of fields. We quantify a limit, which we dub extreme turning, in which rapid-turn solutions may be found efficiently and develop methods to do so. In particular, simple results arise when the covar…
We prove the existence of a general class of rapidly turning two-field inflationary attractors. By only requiring a large, slowly varying turn rate, we solve the system completely without specifying any metric or potential, and prove the linear stability of the solution. Several recently studied turning inflation models, including hyperinflation, side-tracked inflation, and a flat field-space model, turn out to be examples of this general class of attractor solutions. Very rapidly turning models are of particular interest since they can be compatible with the swampland conjectures, and we show…
I discuss folded inflation, an inflationary model embedded in a multi-dimensional scalar potential, such as the stringy landscape. During folded inflation, the field point evolves along a path that turns several corners in the potential. Folded inflation can lead to a relatively large tensor contribution to the Cosmic Microwave Background, while keeping all fields smaller than the Planck scale. I conjecture that if folded inflation generates a significant primordial tensor amplitude, this will generically be associated with non-trivial scale dependence in the spectrum of primordial scalar pert…
Primordial black holes can be produced by a long range attractive fifth force stronger than gravity, mediated by a light scalar field interacting with nonrelativistic "heavy" particles. As soon as the energy fraction of heavy particles reaches a threshold, the fluctuations rapidly become nonlinear. The overdensities collapse into black holes or similar screened objects, without the need for any particular feature in the spectrum of primordial density fluctuations generated during inflation. We discuss whether such primordial black holes can constitute the total dark matter component in the Uni…
It is well known that a primordial black hole (PBH) can be generated in the inflation process of the early universe, especially when the inflation field has a number of non-trivial features that could break the slow-roll condition. In this study, we investigate a toy model of inflation with bumpy potential, which has one or several bumps. We determined that the potential with multi-bump can generate power spectra with multi-peaks in small-scale region, which can in turn predict the generation of primordial black holes in various mass ranges. We also consider the two possibilities of PBH format…
We show that primordial (nearly) extremal black holes with a wide range of masses from the Planck scale to around $10^9$ g could be cosmologically stable and explain dark matter, given a dark electromagnetism and a heavy dark electron. For individual black holes, Hawking radiation and Schwinger discharge processes are suppressed by near-extremality and the heaviness of the dark electron, respectively. In contrast, the merger events of binary systems provide an opportunity to directly observe Hawking radiation. Because the merger products are not extremal, they rapidly evaporate and produce tra…
We point out that a primordial magnetic field can be generated in the electroweak phase transition by a non-Abelian bootstrap, where the field is generated by currents of W's, which in turn are extracted from the vacuum by the magnetic field. This magnetic field is produced as a vortex condensate at the electroweak phase transition. It becomes stringy as a consequence of the dynamical evolution due to magnetohydrodynamics.
When inflation is driven by a pseudo-scalar field χcoupled to vectors as α/4 χF \tilde F, this coupling may lead to a copious production of gauge quanta, which in turns induces non-Gaussian and non-scale invariant corrections to curvature perturbations. We point out that this mechanism is generically at work in a broad class of inflationary models in supergravity hence providing them with a rich set of observational predictions. When the gauge fields are massless, significant effects on CMB scales emerge only for relatively large α. We show that in this regime, the curvature perturbations prod…
We study the generation of a large power spectrum, necessary for primordial black hole formation, within the effective theory of single-field inflation. The mechanisms we consider include a transition into a ghost-inflation-like phase and scenarios where an exponentially growing mode is temporarily turned on. In the cases we discuss, the enhancement in the power spectrum results from either a swift change in some effective coupling or a modification of the dispersion relation for the perturbations, while the background evolution remains unchanged and approximately de Sitter throughout inflatio…
Primordial bubbles that possibly nucleate through quantum tunneling during inflation in a multidimensional potential might have left some relic detectable at the present time. These bubbles turn into black holes during the radiation era, which may account for the LIGO black holes, supermassive black holes, and may play an important role in dark matter. Typically, these black holes are surrounded by an energy deficit in the form of a spherical sound wave packet propagating outwards. In this work we study how this perturbation of the cosmic plasma dissipates before the time of recombination, lea…
In a close encounter with a neutron star, a primordial black hole can get gravitationally captured by depositing a considerable amount of energy into nonradial stellar modes of very high angular number $l$. If the neutron-star equation of state is sufficiently stiff, we show that the total energy loss in the point-particle approximation is formally divergent. Various mechanisms -including viscosity, finite-size effects and the elasticity of the crust- can damp high-$l$ modes and regularize the total energy loss. Within a short time, the black hole is trapped inside the star and disrupts it by …
Strongly non-geodesic, or rapidly turning trajectories in multifield inflation have attracted much interest recently from both theoretical and phenomenological perspectives. Most models with large turning rates in the literature are formulated as effective field theories. In this paper we investigate rapid-turn inflation in supergravity as a first step towards understanding them in string theory. We find that large turning rates can be generated in a wide class of models, at the cost of high field space curvature. In these models, while the inflationary trajectories are stable, one Hessian eig…
We present a novel mechanism for the production of primordial black holes (PBHs). The mechanism is based on a period of thermal inflation followed by fast-roll inflation due to tachyonic mass of order the Hubble scale. Large perturbations are generated at the end of the thermal inflation as the thermal inflaton potential turns from convex to concave. These perturbations can lead to copious production of PBHs when the relevant scales re-enter horizon. We show that such PBHs can naturally account for the observed dark matter in the Universe when the mass of the thermal inflaton is about $10^6\,$…
We calculate the entropy of adiabatic perturbations associated with a truncation of the hierarchy of Green functions at the first non trivial level, i.e. in a self-consistent Gaussian approximation. We give the equation governing the entropy growth and discuss its phenomenology. It is parameterized by two model-dependent kernels. We then examine two particular inflationary models, one with isocurvature perturbations, the other with corrections due to loops of matter fields. In the first model the entropy grows rapidely, while in the second the state remains pure (at one loop).
Inflation can be supported in very steep potentials if it is generated by rapidly turning fields, which can be natural in negatively curved field spaces. The curvature perturbation, $ζ$, of these models undergoes an exponential, transient amplification around the time of horizon crossing, but can still be compatible with observations at the level of the power spectrum. However, a recent analysis (based on a proposed single-field effective theory with an imaginary speed of sound) found that the trispectrum and other higher-order, non-Gaussian correlators also undergo similar exponential enhance…
Ultra-light primordial black holes, with masses $m_\mathrm{PBH}<10^9\mathrm{g}$, evaporate before big-bang nucleosynthesis and can therefore not be directly constrained. They can however be so abundant that they dominate the universe content for a transient period (before reheating the universe via Hawking evaporation). If this happens, they support large cosmological fluctuations at small scales, which in turn induce the production of gravitational waves through second-order effects. Contrary to the primordial black holes, those gravitational waves survive after evaporation, and can therefore…
We investigate the generation of features at large scales in the primordial power spectrum (PPS) when inflation is driven by two scalar fields. In canonical single field models of inflation, these features are often generated due to deviations from the slow-roll regime. While deviations from slow-roll can be naturally achieved in two field models due to a sharp turn in the trajectory in the field space, features at the largest scales of the types suggested by CMB temperature anisotropies are more difficult to achieve in models involving two canonical scalar fields due to the presence of isocur…
We use the induced geometry on the two dimensional transverse cross section of a photon beam propagating on a perturbed Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) spacetime to find the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) photon distribution over a telescope's collecting area today. It turns out that at each line of sight the photons are diluted along a transverse direction due to gravitational shearing. The effect can be characterized by two spin-weight-two variables, which are reminiscent of the Stokes polarization parameters. Similar to that case, one can construct a scalar and a pseudo-scalar function …
We consider rotating Primordial black holes (PBHs) and study the effect of accretion of radiation in the radiation dominated era. The central part of our analysis deals with the role of the angular momentum parameter on the evolution of PBHs. We find that both the accretion rate and evaporation rate decrease with increase in angular momentum parameter, but the rate of evaporation decreases more rapidly than the rate of accretion. This shows that the evaporation time of PBHs get prolonged with increase in angular momentum parameter. We also note that the lifetime of rotating PBHs increase with …
In low-energy effective string theory, $α'$ corrections involve the coupling of the dilaton field to Gauss-Bonnet term. We assume that the dilaton potential is fine tuned so that the dilaton field may oscillate rapidly for a while around the minimum of its potential but the inflation background is not affected. By numerical method, we find that if the dilaton starts to oscillate at the time of about $\sim 60$ e-folds before the end of inflation, $α^\prime$ correction may bring unusual oscillations to the inflationary gravitational wave spectrum, which might be measurably imprinted in the CMB B…
We compute in detail how deviations from Einstein gravity at the inflation energy scale could appear as non-Gaussian features in the sky. To illustrate this we use multi-field $α-$attractor models in the framework of supergravity to realise inflation. We find no obvious obstacle for having choices of model's parameters that generate non-Gaussian features of the equilateral and local type at the $\cal O$(1) level in the $f_{\rm NL}$ non-Gaussianity parameter, thus being potentially detectable in future cosmological surveys. This non-Gaussianity has its origin in either the non-canonical kinetic…
It has recently been proposed that massive primordial black holes (PBH) could constitute all of the dark matter, providing a novel scenario of structure formation, with early reionization and a rapid growth of the massive black holes at the center of galaxies and dark matter halos. The scenario arises from broad peaks in the primordial power spectrum that give both a spatially clustered and an extended mass distribution of PBH. The constraints from the observed microlensing events on the extended mass function have already been addressed. Here we study the impact of spatial clustering on the m…
We address the question of how one can modify the inflationary tensor spectrum without changing at all the successful predictions on the curvature perturbation. We show that this is indeed possible, and determine the two quadratic curvature corrections that are free from instabilities and affect only the tensor sector at the level of linear cosmological perturbations. Both of the two corrections can reduce the tensor amplitude, though one of them generates large non-Gaussianity of the curvature perturbation. It turns out that the other one corresponds to so-called Lorentz-violating Weyl gravit…
Vacuum bubbles may nucleate during the inflationary epoch and expand, reaching relativistic speeds. After inflation ends, the bubbles are quickly slowed down, transferring their momentum to a shock wave that propagates outwards in the radiation background. The ultimate fate of the bubble depends on its size. Bubbles smaller than certain critical size collapse to ordinary black holes, while in the supercritical case the bubble interior inflates, forming a baby universe, which is connected to the exterior region by a wormhole. The wormhole then closes up, turning into two black holes at its two …
We study Newtonian cosmological perturbation theory from a field theoretical point of view. We derive a path integral representation for the cosmological evolution of stochastic fluctuations. Our main result is the closed form of the generating functional valid for any initial statistics. Moreover, we extend the renormalization group method proposed by Mataresse and Pietroni to the case of primordial non-Gaussian density and velocity fluctuations. As an application, we calculate the nonlinear propagator and examine how the non-Gaussianity affects the memory of cosmic fields to their initial co…
Primordial black-holes (PBH) can be produced in single-field models of inflation with a quasi-inflection point in the potential. In these models, a large production of PBHs requires a deviation from the slow-roll (SR) trajectory. In turn, this SR violation can produce an exponential growth of quantum fluctuations. We study the back-reaction of these quantum modes on the inflationary dynamics using stochastic inflation in the Hamilton-Jacobi formalism. We develop a methodology to solve quantum diffusion beyond SR in terms of the statistical moments of the probability distribution. We apply thes…
We develop a nonperturbative method through the Hartree factorization to examine the quantum fluctuation effects on the single-field inflationary models in a spatially flat FRW cosmological space-time. Apart from the background field equation as well as the Friedmann equation with the corrections of quantum field fluctuations, the modified Mukhanov-Sasaki equations for the mode functions of the quantum scalar field are also derived by introducing the nonzero $Δ_B$ term. We consider the Universe undergoing the slow roll (SR)-ultra slow roll (USR) -slow roll (SR) inflation where in particular th…
We study a mechanism to produce the circular polarization of primordial gravitational waves. The circular polarization is generated during the super-inflation driven by the Gauss-Bonnet term in the string-inspired cosmology. The instability in the tensor mode caused by the Gauss-Bonnet term and the parity violation due to the gravitational Chern-Simons term are the essential ingredients of the mechanism. We also discuss detectability of the produced circular polarization of gravitational waves. It turns out that the simple model of single-field inflation contradicts CMB observations. To circum…
It is a well-known truism, inspired on the general theory of relativity, that gravity gravitates. Here we suggest the possibility that dark matter may be caused by the gravitation of the metric. At first sight this seems impossible since the gravitational fields in galaxies and cumuli are so weak that it would seem that second order terms are negligible. Nevertheless, the general theory of relativity tells us that the gravitation due the metric is given by (grad g_{00})^2. Thus, a metric field g_{00} varying fast in the space directions could make a sizeable contribution to the gravitational f…
