We report the growth and magneto-transport studies of Pd$_{3}$Bi$_{2}$S$_{2}$ (PBS) thin films synthesized by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique. The magneto-transport study on pristine and post annealed films show the presence of more than one type of charge carrier with a carrier concentration in the range $0.6$ - $2.26~\times$ 10$^{21}$ cm$^{-3}$ and mobility in the range 0.96 - 1.73 $\times$ 10$^{2}$ cm$^{2}$/Vs. At low temperatures a logarithmic increase in conductivity is observed which indicates the presence of weak anti-localization (WAL). The magnetotransport data is analysed within the Hikami-Larkin-Nagaoka (HLN) theory. It is found that temperature dependence of the dephasing length can't be explained only by electron-electron scattering and that electron-phonon scattering also contributes to the phase relaxation mechanism in PBS films.
FeSn is a topological semimetal (TSM) and kagome antiferromagnet (AFM) composed of alternating Fe3Sn kagome planes and honeycomb Sn planes. This unique structure gives rise to exotic features in the band structures such as the coexistence of Dirac cones and flatbands near the Fermi level, fully spin-polarized 2D surface Dirac fermions, and the ability to open a large gap in the Dirac cone by reorienting the Néel vector. In this work, we report the synthesis of high quality epitaxial (0001) FeSn films by magnetron sputtering. Using FeSn/Py heterostructures, we show a large exchange bias effect …
Epitaxial thin films of CuMnAs have recently attracted attention due to their potential to host relativistic antiferromagnetic spintronics and exotic topological physics. Here we report on the structural and electronic properties of a tetragonal CuMnAs thin film studied using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and density functional theory (DFT). STM reveals a surface terminated by As atoms, with the expected semi-metallic behavior. An unexpected zigzag step edge surface reconstruction is observed with emerging electronic states below the Fermi energy. DFT calculations indicate that the step …
Topology and strong electron correlations are crucial ingredients in emerging quantum materials, yet their intersection in experimental systems has been relatively limited to date. Strongly correlated Weyl semimetals, particularly when magnetism is incorporated, offer a unique and fertile platform to explore emergent phenomena in novel topological matter and topological spintronics. The antiferromagnetic Weyl semimetal Mn3Sn exhibits many exotic physical properties such as a large spontaneous Hall effect and has recently attracted intense interest. In this work, we report synthesis of epitaxia…
We present a study on magnetotransport in films of the topological Dirac semimetal Cd$_{3}$As$_{2}$ doped with Sb grown by molecular beam epitaxy. In our weak antilocalization analysis, we find a significant enhancement of the spin-orbit scattering rate, indicating that Sb doping leads to a strong increase of the pristine band-inversion energy. We discuss possible origins of this large enhancement by comparing Sb-doped Cd$_{3}$As$_{2}$ with other compound semiconductors. Sb-doped Cd$_{3}$As$_{2}$ will be a suitable system for further investigations and functionalization of topological Dirac se…
Unconventional surface states protected by non-trivial bulk orders are sources of various exotic quantum transport in topological materials. One prominent example is the unique magnetic orbit, so-called Weyl orbit, in topological semimetals where two spatially separated surface Fermi-arcs are interconnected across the bulk. The recent observation of quantum Hall states in Dirac semimetal Cd3As2 bulks have drawn attention to the novel quantization phenomena possibly evolving from the Weyl orbit. Here we report surface quantum oscillation and its evolution into quantum Hall states in Cd3As2 thin…
Thermoelectric materials intrigue much interest due to their wide range of application such as power generators and refrigerators. The efficiency of thermoelectric materials is quantified by the figure of merit, and a figure greater than unity is desired. To achieve this, a large Seebeck coefficient and low phonon thermal conductivity are required. We show that this can be achieved with a thin film of topological nodal line semimetals. We also discusses the correlation effect and spin current induced by a temperature gradient. The obtained results provide insight for the improvement of thermoe…
In ultra-thin film of topological insulator, the hybridization between the top and bottom surfaces opens an energy gap and forms two degenerate quantum anomalous Hall states, which give rise to a quantum spin Hall state. In this paper, we demonstrate that a Weyl semimetal can be realized in an ultra-thin film of topological insulator heterostructure in a similar way to that of the surface state of a strong three-dimensional (3D) topological insulator studied by Burkov and Balents . We find that the system realizes both 3D quantum anomalous Hall phase and 3D quantum spin Hall phase, and the Wey…
A well known semiconductor Cd3As2 has reentered the spotlight due to its unique electronic structure and quantum transport phenomena as a topological Dirac semimetal. For elucidating and controlling its topological quantum state, high-quality Cd3As2 thin films have been highly desired. Here we report the development of an elaborate growth technique of high-crystallinity and high-mobility Cd3As2 films with controlled thicknesses and the observation of quantum Hall effect dependent on the film thickness. With decreasing the film thickness to 10 nm, the quantum Hall states exhibit variations such…
We report on the synthesis and transport properties of perovskite (Pv) CaIrO3 thin films. The Pv phase of CaIrO3 was stabilized by epitaxial growth on SrTiO3, (LaAlO3)0.3(Sr2AlTaO6)0.7, and LaAlO3 substrates with strong tensile, weak tensile, and compressive strains, respectively. The resistivity of these films showed a poorly metallic behavior. The Hall resistivity exhibited a sign change as a function of temperature and a nonlinear magnetic-field dependence, which clearly indicated the coexistence of electrons and holes and hence supported that Pv CaIrO3 films are semimetallic. The observed …
We investigate an ultra-thin film of topological insulator (TI) multilayer as a model for a three-dimensional (3D) Weyl semimetal. We introduce tunneling parameters $t_S$, $t_\perp$, and $t_D$, where the former two parameters couple layers of the same thin film at small and large momenta, and the latter parameter couples neighbouring thin film layers along the $z$-direction. The Chern number is computed in each topological phase of the system and we find that for $t_S,t_D>0$, the tunneling parameter $t_\perp$ changes from positive to negative as the system transits from Weyl semi-metallic phas…
Mn$_{3}$Sn is a non-collinear antiferromagnet which displays a large anomalous Hall effect at room temperature. It is believed that the principal contribution to its anomalous Hall conductivity comes from Berry curvature. Moreover, dc transport and photoemission experiments have confirmed that Mn$_{3}$Sn may be an example of a time-reversal symmetry breaking Weyl semimetal. Due to a small, but finite moment in the room temperature inverse triangular spin structure, which allows control of the Hall current with external field, this material has garnered much interest for next generation memory …
Using atomic-force microscopy (AFM) and wide-band (0.02-8.5 eV) spectroscopic ellipsometry techniques we investigated morphology and optical properties of Cd3As2 films grown by non-reactive rf magnetron sputtering on two types of oriented crystalline substrates (100)p-Si and (001) alpha-Al2O3. The AFM study revealed grainy morphology of the films due to island incorporation during the film growth. The complex dielectric function spectra of the annealed Cd3As2/Al2O3 films manifest pronounced interband optical transitions at 1.2 and 3.0 eV, in excellent agreement with the theoretical calculation…
Rapid progress of quantum transport study in topological Dirac semimetal, including observations of quantum Hall effect in two-dimensional (2D) Cd$_{\mathrm{3}}$As$_{\mathrm{2}}$ samples, has uncovered even more interesting quantum transport properties in high-quality and three-dimensional (3D) samples. However, such 3D Cd$_{\mathrm{3}}$As$_{\mathrm{2}}$ films with low carrier density and high electron mobility have been hardly obtained. Here we report the growth and characterization of 3D thick Cd$_{\mathrm{3}}$As$_{\mathrm{2}}$ films adopting molecular beam epitaxy. The highest electron mobi…
Perovskite SrIrO3 has long been proposed as an exotic semimetal induced by the interplay between the spin-orbit coupling and electron correlations. However, its low-lying electronic structure is still lacking. We synthesize high-quality perovskite SrIrO3 (100) films by means of oxide molecular beam epitaxy, and then systemically investigate their low energy electronic structure using in-situ angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We find that the hole-like bands around R and the electron-like bands around U(T) intersect the Fermi level simultaneously, providing the direct evidence of the s…
We report on the evolution of the average and depth-dependent magnetic order in thin film samples of biaxially stressed and electron-doped EuTiO$_3$ for samples across a doping range $<$0.1 to 7.8 $\times 10^{20}$ cm$^{-3}$. Under an applied in-plane magnetic field, the G-type antiferromagnetic ground state undergoes a continuous spin-flop phase transition into in-plane, field-polarized ferromagnetism. The critical field for ferromagnetism slightly decreases with an increasing number of free carriers, yet the field evolution of the spin-flop transition is qualitatively similar across the dopin…
We report a magnetotransport study of spin relaxation in 1.4-21.2 nm epitaxial SrIrO$_3$ thin films coherently strained on SrTiO$_3$ substrates. Fully charge compensated semimetallic transport has been observed in SrIrO$_3$ films thicker than 1.6 nm, where the charge mobility at 10 K increases from 45 cm$^2$/Vs to 150 cm$^2$/Vs with decreasing film thickness. In the two-dimensional regime, the charge dephasing and spin-orbit scattering lengths extracted from the weak localization/anti-localization effects show power-law dependence on temperature, pointing to the important role of electron-elec…
Antiferromagnets exhibit distinctive characteristics such as ultrafast dynamics and robustness against perturbative fields, thereby attracting considerable interest in fundamental physics and technological applications. Recently, it was revealed that the Néel vector can be switched by a current-induced staggered (Néel) spin-orbit torque in antiferromagnets with the parity-time symmetry, and furthermore, a nonsymmorphic symmetry enables the control of Dirac fermions. However, the real-time dynamics of the magnetic and electronic structures remain largely unexplored. Here, we propose a theory of…
The newly discovered topological Dirac semimetals host the possibilities of various topological phase transitions through the control of spin-orbit coupling as well as symmetries and dimensionalities. Here, we report a magnetotransport study of high-mobility (Cd1-xZnx)3As2 films, where the topological Dirac semimetal phase can be turned into a trivial insulator via chemical substitution. By high-field measurements with a Hall-bar geometry, magnetoresistance components ascribed to the chiral charge pumping have been distinguished from other extrinsic effects. The negative magnetoresistance exhi…
Spin-charge conversion via spin-orbit interaction is one of the core concepts in the current spintronics research. The efficiency of the interconversion between charge and spin current is estimated based on Berry curvature of Bloch wavefunction in the linear-response regime. Beyond the linear regime, nonlinear spin-charge conversion in the higher-order electric field terms has recently been demonstrated in noncentrosymmetric materials with nontrivial spin texture in the momentum space. Here we report the observation of the nonlinear charge-spin conversion in a nominally centrosymmetric oxide m…
The interplay between electronic interactions and strong spin-orbit coupling is expected to create a plethora of fascinating correlated topological states of quantum matter. Of particular interest are magnetic Weyl semimetals originally proposed in the pyrochlore iridates, which are only expected to reveal their topological nature in thin film form. To date, however, direct experimental demonstrations of these exotic phases remain elusive, due to the lack of usable single crystals and the insufficient quality of available films. Here, we report on the discovery of the long-sought magnetic Weyl…

We perform mean-field study of possible magnetic instabilities in Dirac semimetals. We find that Dirac electrons naturally host antiferromagnetic or spin density wave ground states, though their specific configurations may vary depending on specific model, as well as chemical potential and temperature. We also discuss paramagnetic susceptibility of Dirac semimetals. In the cases, when Dirac electrons do not have orbital momentum, the magnetic properties may be $μ$ and $T$ independent.
We report results of a magneto-transport study on thin films of the topological semi-metal candidate PdSb$_{2}$ (PS). We observe a positive correction to magneto-conductivity at low temperatures, which is a signature of weak anti-localization (WAL). We analyze the WAL data within the Hikami-Larkin-Nagaoka (HLN) theory and extract the dephasing length (L$_ϕ$) whose temperature dependence reveals the various phase relaxation mechanisms. From the WAL effect, we also extract $α$ (the number of transport channels). The evolution of $α$ with temperature and film thickness reflects how the coupling b…
As a newly emergent type-II Dirac semimetal, Platinum Telluride (PtTe2) stands out from other 2D noble-transition-metal dichalcogenides for the unique structure and novel physical properties, such as high carrier mobility, strong electron-phonon coupling and tunable bandgap, which make the PtTe2 a good candidate for applications in optoelectronics, valleytronics and far infrared detectors. Although the transport properties of PtTe2 have been studied extensively, the dynamics of the nonequilibrium carriers remain nearly uninvestigated. Herein we employ optical pump-terahertz (THz) probe spectro…
Topological semimetals with superconducting properties provide an emergent platform to explore the properties of topological superconductors. We report magnetization, and magneto-transport measurements on high quality single crystals of transition metal dichalcogenide SnTaS2. It is a nodal line semimetal with superconducting transition below Tc = 2.9 K. Moderate anisotropy (3.1) is observed in upper critical fields along H||c and H||ab plane. In the normal state we observe large magneto-resistance and weak anti-localization effect that provide unambiguous confirmation of topological features i…
The topological three-dimensional Dirac semimetal Cd3As2 has drawn great attention for the novel physics and promising applications in optoelectronic devices operating in the infrared and THz regimes. Among the extensive studies in the past decades, one intriguing debate is the underlined mechanism that governing the nonequilibrium carrier dynamics following photoexcitation. In this study, the temperature dependent photocarrier dynamics in Cd3As2 film has been investigated with time-resolved terahertz spectroscopy. The experimental results demonstrate that photoexcitation results in abrupt inc…
Layered two-dimensional (2D) materials MoTe2 have been paid special attention due to the rich optoelectronic properties with various phases. The nonequilibrium carrier dynamics as well as its temperature dependence in MoTe2 are of prime importance, as it can shed light on understanding the anomalous optical response and potential applications in far infrared (IR) photodetection. Hereby, we employ time-resolved terahertz (THz) spectroscopy to study the temperature dependent nonequilibrium carrier dynamics in MoTe2 films. After photoexcitation of 1.59 eV, the 1T'-phase MoTe2 at high temperature …
We consider the electromagnetic response of a topological Weyl semimetal (TWS) with a pair of Weyl nodes in the bulk and corresponding Fermi arcs in the surface Brillouin zone. We compute the frequency-dependent complex conductivities $σ_{αβ}(ω)$ and also take into account the modification of Maxwell equations by the topological $θ$-term to obtain the Kerr and Faraday rotations in a variety of geometries. For TWS films thinner than the wavelength, the Kerr and Faraday rotations, determined by the separation between Weyl nodes, are significantly larger than in topological insulators. In thicker…
We use the first principles and effective Hamiltonian methods to study the electronic structure and magnetic properties of a recently synthesized layered antiferromagnetic square net topological semimetal EuZnSb$_2$ [1]. The main message of the paper is that effects of small changes in the band structure produced by the magnetic ordering and changes in the orientation of the \Neel vector are amplified in such transport properties as the spin Hall conductivity. We predict that the effects of the broken symmetry introduced by the ordering of the \Neel vector, being very weak in the bulk, are pro…
Twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) near "magic angles" has emerged as a rich platform for strongly correlated states of two-dimensional Dirac semimetals. Here we show that twisted bilayers of thin-film magnetic topological insulators (MTI) with large in-plane magnetization can realize flat bands near 2D Dirac nodes. Using a simple model for thin films of MTIs, we derive a continuum model for two such MTIs, twisted by a small angle with respect to each other. When the magnetization is in-plane, we show that interlayer tunneling terms act as effective $SU(2)$ vector potentials, which are known to le…
A point charge near the surface of a topological insulator (TI) with broken time-reversal symmetry is predicted to generate an image magnetic charge in addition to an image electric charge. We use scanning tunneling spectroscopy to study the image potential states (IPS) of the topological semimetal Sb(111) surface. We observe five IPS with discrete energy levels that are well described by a one-dimensional model. The spatial variation of the IPS energies and lifetimes near surface step edges shows the first local signature of resonant interband scattering between IPS, which suggests that image…
We report an above-room-temperature ferromagnetic state realized in a proximitized Dirac semimetal, which is fabricated by growing typical Dirac semimetal Cd$_3$As$_2$ films on a ferromagnetic garnet with strong perpendicular magnetization. Observed anomalous Hall conductivity with substantially large Hall angles is found to be almost proportional to magnetization and opposite in sign to it. Theoretical calculations based on first-principles electronic structure also demonstrate that the Fermi-level dependent anomalous Hall conductivity reflects the Berry curvature originating in the split Wey…

Ti2O3 exhibits a unique metal-insulator transition (MIT) at approximately 450 K over a wide temperature range of ~ 150 K. This broad MIT accompanied by lattice deformation differs from the sharp MITs observed in most other transition-metal oxides. A long-standing issue is determining the role of electron-electron correlation in the electronic structure and MIT of Ti2O3. However, the lack of information about the band structure of Ti2O3 has hindered investigating the origin of its unusual physical properties. Here, we report the electronic band structure of insulating Ti2O3 films with slight ho…
The non-trivial magnetic texture in real space gives rise to the intriguing phenomenon of topological Hall effect (THE), which is relatively less explored in topological semimetals. Here, we report large THE in the antiferromagnetic (AFM) state in single crystals of EuAgAs, an AFM Dirac semimetal. EuAgAs hosts AFM ground state below $T_N$ = 12 K with a weak ferromagnetic component. The in-plane isothermal magnetization below $T_N$ exhibits a weak metamagnetic transition. We also observe chiral anomaly induced positive longitudinal magnetoconductivity which indicates a Weyl fermion state under …
The orthorhombic antiferromagnetic compound CuMnAs was recently predicted to be an antiferromagnetic Dirac semimetal if both the Ry gliding and S2z rotational symmetries are preserved in its magnetic ordered state. In our previous work on Cu0.95MnAs and Cu0.98Mn0.96As, we showed that in their low temperature commensurate antiferromagnetic state the b axis is the magnetic easy axis, which breaks the S2z symmetry. As a result, while the existence of Dirac fermions is no longer protected, the polarized surface state makes this material potentially interesting for antiferromagnetic spintronics. In…
The ground state of a molecular diamond-lattice compound (ET)Ag$_4$(CN)$_5$ is investigated by the magnetization and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. We found that the system exhibits antiferromagnetic long-range ordering with weak ferromagnetism at a high temperature of 102 K owing to the strong electron correlation. The spin susceptibility is well fitted into the diamond-lattice Heisenberg model with a nearest neighbor exchange coupling of 230 K, indicating the less frustrated interactions. The transition temperature elevates up to $\sim$195 K by applying pressure of 2 GPa, which rec…
