Antiferromagnets exhibit distinctive characteristics such as ultrafast dynamics and robustness against perturbative fields, thereby attracting considerable interest in fundamental physics and technological applications. Recently, it was revealed that the Néel vector can be switched by a current-induced staggered (Néel) spin-orbit torque in antiferromagnets with the parity-time symmetry, and furthermore, a nonsymmorphic symmetry enables the control of Dirac fermions. However, the real-time dynamics of the magnetic and electronic structures remain largely unexplored. Here, we propose a theory of the ultrafast dynamics in antiferromagnetic Dirac semimetals and show that the Néel vector is rotated in the picosecond timescale by the terahertz-pulse-induced Néel spin-orbit torque and other torques originating from magnetic anisotropies. This reorientation accompanies the modulation of the mass of Dirac fermions and can be observed in real time by the magneto-optical effects. Our results provide a theoretical basis for emerging ultrafast antiferromagnetic spintronics combined with the topological aspects of materials.
We investigate polarization-dependent ultrafast photocurrents in the Weyl semimetal TaAs using terahertz (THz) emission spectroscopy. Our results reveal that highly directional, transient photocurrents are generated along the non-centrosymmetric c-axis regardless of incident light polarization, while helicity-dependent photocurrents are excited within the ab-plane. This is consistent with earlier static photocurrent experiments, and demonstrates on the basis of both the physical constraints imposed by symmetry and the temporal dynamics intrinsic to current generation and decay that optically i…
Despite being the most studied nodal line semimetal, a clear understanding of the transient state relaxation dynamics and the underlying mechanism in ZrSiS is lacking. Using time and angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we study the ultrafast relaxation dynamics in ZrSiS and reveal a unique relaxation in the bulk nodal-line state which is well captured by a simple model based on optical and acoustic phonon cooling. We find linear decay processes for both optical and acoustic phonon relaxations with acoustic cooling suppressed at high temperatures. Our results reveal different decay mecha…

The efforts to pursue photo detection with extreme performance in terms of ultrafast response time, broad detection wavelength range, and high sensitivity have never been exhausted as driven by its wide range of optoelectronic and photonic applications such as optical communications, interconnects, imaging and remote sensing1. 2D Dirac semimetal graphene has shown excellent potential toward high performance photodetector with high operation speed, broadband response and efficient carrier multiplications benefiting from its linear dispersion band structure with high carrier mobility and zero ba…
Three dimensional (3D) Dirac semimetals which can be seen as 3D analogues of graphene have attracted enormous interests in research recently. In order to apply these ultrahigh-mobility materials in future electronic/optoelectronic devices, it is crucial to understand the relaxation dynamics of photoexcited carriers and their coupling with lattice. In this work, we report ultrafast transient reflection measurements of the photoexcited carrier dynamics in cadmium arsenide (Cd3As2), which is one of the most stable Dirac semimetals that have been confirmed experimentally. By using low energy probe…
Revealing the ultrafast dynamics of three-dimensional (3D) Dirac fermions upon photoexcitation is critical for both fundamental science and device applications. So far, how the cooling of 3D Dirac fermions differs from that of two-dimensional (2D) Dirac fermions and whether there is population inversion are fundamental questions that remain to be answered. Here we reveal the ultrafast dynamics of Dirac fermions in a model 3D Dirac semimetal Cd$_3$As$_2$ by ultrafast time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (TrARPES) with a tunable probe photon energy from 5.3 - 6.9 eV. The energy- a…
A magnetic Weyl semimetal is a recent focus of extensive research as it may exhibit large and robust transport phenomena associated with topologically protected Weyl points in momentum space. Since a magnetic texture provides a handle for the configuration of the Weyl points and its transport response, understanding of magnetic dynamics should form a basis of future control of a topological magnet. Mn3Sn is an example of an antiferromagnetic Weyl semimetal that exhibits a large response comparable to the one observed in ferromagnets despite a vanishingly small magnetization. The non-collinear …
Symmetry plays a central role in conventional and topological phases of matter, making the ability to optically drive symmetry change a critical step in developing future technologies that rely on such control. Topological materials, like the newly discovered topological semimetals, are particularly sensitive to a breaking or restoring of time-reversal and crystalline symmetries, which affect both bulk and surface electronic states. While previous studies have focused on controlling symmetry via coupling to the crystal lattice, we demonstrate here an all-electronic mechanism based on photocurr…
Weyl semimetals are promising quantum materials that offer unique topological properties. Lately, it has been shown that laser-driven electron dynamics have characteristic signatures in two-dimensional and three-dimensional Dirac semimetals. The transition from Dirac to Weyl semimetal requires the breaking of either inversion or time-reversal symmetry. The present work shows that the laser-driven electron dynamics in a Weyl semimetal with broken time-reversal symmetry has intriguing features in its high-harmonic spectrum. It is found that the parity and magnitude of the non-zero Berry curvatur…
When a Dirac semimetal is subject to a circularly polarized laser, it is predicted that the Dirac cone splits into two Weyl nodes and a nonequilibrium transient state called the Floquet Weyl semimetal is realized. We focus on the previously unexplored low-frequency regime, where the upper and lower Dirac bands resonantly couple with each other through multi-photon processes, which is a realistic situation in solid state ultrafast pump-probe experiments. We find a series of new Weyl nodes emerging in pairs when the Floquet replica bands hybridize with each other. The nature of the Floquet Weyl …
An antiferromagnetic semimetal has been recently identified as a new member of topological semimetals that may host three-dimensional symmetry-protected Dirac fermions. A reorientation of the Néel vector may break the underlying symmetry and open a gap in the quasi-particle spectrum, inducing the (semi)metal-insulator transition. Here, we predict that such transition may be controlled by manipulating the chemical potential location of the material. We perform both analytical and numerical analysis on the thermodynamic potential of the model Hamiltonian and find that the gapped spectrum is pref…
We present a time- and angular-resolved photoemission (TR-ARPES) study of the transition- metal dichalcogenide WTe2, a candidate type II Weyl semimetal exhibiting extremely large magne- toresistence. Using femtosecond light pulses, we characterize the unoccupied states of the electron pockets above the Fermi level. We track the relaxation dynamics of photoexcited electrons along the unoccupied band structure and into a bulk hole pocket. Following the ultrafast carrier relaxation, we report remarkably similar decay dynamics for electrons and holes. Our results corroborate the hypothesis that ca…
We study theoretically the ultrafast electron dynamics of three-dimensional Weyl semimetals in the field of a laser pulse. For a circularly-polarized pulse, such dynamics is governed by topological resonance, which manifests itself as a specific conduction band population distribution in the vicinity of the Weyl points. The topological resonance is determined by the competition between the topological phase and the dynamic phase and depends on the handedness of a circularly polarized pulse. Also, we show that the conduction band population induced by a circularly-polarized pulse that consists …
Recent demonstrations on manipulating antiferromagnetic (AF) order have triggered a growing interest in antiferromagnetic metal (AFM), and potential high-density spintronic applications demand further improvements in the anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR). The antiferromagnetic semimetals (AFS) are newly discovered materials that possess massless Dirac fermions that are protected by the crystalline symmetries. In this material, a reorientation of the AF order may break the underlying symmetries and induce a finite energy gap. As such, the possible phase transition from the semimetallic to ins…
Spin-orbitronics and Dirac quasiparticles are two fields of condensed matter physics initiated independently about a decade ago. Here we predict that Dirac quasiparticles can be controlled by the spin-orbit torque reorientation of the Néel vector in an antiferromagnet. Using CuMnAs as an example, we formulate symmetry criteria allowing for the co-existence of Dirac quasiparticles and Néel spin-orbit torques. We identify the non-symmorphic crystal symmetry protection of Dirac band crossings whose on and off switching is mediated by the Néel vector reorientation. We predict that this concept, ve…
Time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (TrARPES) is a powerful technique for capturing the ultrafast dynamics of charge carriers and revealing photo-induced phase transitions in quantum materials. However, the lack of widely tunable probe photon energy, which is critical for accessing the dispersions at different out-of-plane momentum $k_z$ in TrARPES measurements, has hindered the ultrafast dynamics investigation of 3D quantum materials such as Dirac or Weyl semimetals. Here we report the development of a TrARPES system with a highly tunable probe photon energy from 5.3 to 7.0 eV…
We develop a theory for the nonlinear time domain response of a Weyl semimetal driven by an ultrafast optical pulse. At quadratic order in the driving field we find that the response near a band inversion transition contains a coherent oscillating component proportional field intensity and with a frequency that can be tuned over a wide range (from THz to the near IR) selected by the chemical potential. We illustrate the effect by calculating the induced current as a function of time for a model of a parity broken Weyl semimetal where large Berry curvature near the band inversion transition pro…
The field-free spin-orbit torque induced 180° reorientation of perpendicular magnetization is beneficial for the high performance magnetic memory. The antiferromagnetic material (AFM) can provide higher operation speed than the ferromagnetic counterpart. In this paper, we propose a trilayer AFM/Insulator/Heavy Metal structure as the AFM memory device. We show that the field-free switching of the AFM with perpendicular Néel vector can be achieved by using two orthogonal currents, which provide the uniform damping-like torque and stagger field-like torque, respectively. The reversible switching …

Antiferromagnetic Weyl semimetal Mn$_3$Sn has shown to generate strong intrinsic anomalous Hall effect (AHE) at room temperature, due to large momentum-space Berry curvature from the time-reversal symmetry breaking electronic bands of the Kagome planes. This prompts us to investigate intrinsic spin Hall effect, a transverse phenomenon with identical origin as the intrinsic AHE. We report inverse spin Hall effect experiments in nanocrystalline Mn$_3$Sn nanowires at room temperature using spin absorption method which enables us to quantitatively derive both the spin diffusion length and the spin…

Non-collinear antiferromagnetic Weyl semimetals, combining the advantages of a zero stray field and ultrafast spin dynamics as well as a large anomalous Hall effect and the chiral anomaly of Weyl fermions, have attracted extensive interests. However, the all-electrical control of such systems at room temperature, a crucial step toward practical applications, has not been reported. Here using a small writing current of around 5*10^{6} A/cm^{2}, we realize the all-electrical current-induced deterministic switching of the non-collinear antiferromagnet Mn3Sn with a strong readout signal at room te…
