We consider the Dubrovin--Frobenius manifold of rank $2$ whose genus expansion at a special point controls the enumeration of a higher genera generalization of the Catalan numbers, or, equivalently, the enumeration of maps on surfaces, ribbon graphs, Grothendieck's dessins d'enfants, strictly monotone Hurwitz numbers, or lattice points in the moduli spaces of curves. Liu, Zhang, and Zhou conjectured that the full partition function of this Dubrovin--Frobenius manifold is a tau-function of the extended nonlinear Schrödinger hierarchy, an extension of a particular rational reduction of the Kadomtsev--Petviashvili hierarchy. We prove a version of their conjecture specializing the Givental--Milanov method that allows to construct the Hirota quadratic equations for the partition function, and then deriving from them the Lax representation.
We show that eigenvalues of the family of Baxter Q-operators for supersymmetric integrable spin chains constructed with the gl(K|M)-invariant $R$-matrix obey the Hirota bilinear difference equation. The nested Bethe ansatz for super spin chains, with any choice of simple root system, is then treated as a discrete dynamical system for zeros of polynomial solutions to the Hirota equation. Our basic tool is a chain of Backlund transformations for the Hirota equation connecting quantum transfer matrices. This approach also provides a systematic way to derive the complete set of generalized Baxter …
The new generalized Harry Dym equation, recently introduced by Z. Popowicz in Phys. Lett. A 317, 260--264 (2003), is transformed into the Hirota--Satsuma system of coupled KdV equations.
We present a bilinear Hirota representation of the N=2 supersymmetric extension of the Korteweg-de Vries equation. This representation is deduced using binary Bell polynomials, hierarchies and fermionic limits. We, also, propose a new approach for the generalisation of the Hirota bilinear formalism in the N=2 supersymmetric context.
This paper reconsiders finite variable reductions of the universal Whitham hierarchy of genus zero in the perspective of dispersionless Hirota equations. In the case of one-variable reduction, dispersionless Hirota equations turn out to be a powerful tool for understanding the mechanism of reduction. All relevant equations describing the reduction (Löwner-type equations and diagonal hydrodynamic equations) can be thereby derived and justified in a unified manner. The case of multi-variable reductions is not so straightforward. Nevertheless, the reduction procedure can be formulated in a genera…
Painleve analysis, Backlund transformation, Lax pair and periodic wave solutions for a generalized (2+1)-dimensional Hirota-Satsuma-Ito equation in fluid mechanics
The goal of this paper is to identify the universal Whitham hierarchy of genus zero with a dispersionless limit of the multi-component KP hierarchy. To this end, the multi-component KP hierarchy is (re)formulated to depend on several discrete variables called ``charges''. These discrete variables play the role of lattice coordinates in underlying Toda field equations. A multi-component version of the so called differential Fay identity are derived from the Hirota equations of the $τ$-function of this ``charged'' multi-component KP hierarchy. These multi-component differential Fay identities ha…
Using the Weiss method of truncated singular expansions, we construct an explicit Backlund transformation of the Drinfeld-Sokolov-Satsuma-Hirota system into itself. Then we find all the special solutions generated by this transformation from the trivial zero solution of this system.
We consider the Hirota equation (the discrete analog of the generalized Toda system) over a finite field. We present the general algebro-geometric method of construction of solutions of the equation. As an example we construct analogs of the multisoliton solutions for which the wave functions and the $τ$-function can be found using rational functions. Within the class of multisoliton solutions we isolate generalized breather-type solutions which have no direct counterparts in the complex field case.
We study the integrability of a family of birational maps obtained as reductions of the discrete Hirota equation, which are related to travelling wave solutions of the lattice KdV equation. In particular, for reductions corresponding to waves moving with rational speed N/M on the lattice, where N,M are coprime integers, we prove the Liouville integrability of the maps when N + M is odd, and prove various properties of the general case. There are two main ingredients to our construction: the cluster algebra associated with each of the Hirota bilinear equations, which provides invariant (pre)sym…
We study the Desargues maps $ϕ:\ZZ^N\to\PP^M$, which generate lattices whose points are collinear with all their nearest (in positive directions) neighbours. The multidimensional compatibility of the map is equivalent to the Desargues theorem and its higher-dimensional generalizations. The nonlinear counterpart of the map is the non-commutative (in general) Hirota--Miwa system. In the commutative case of the complex field we apply the nonlocal $\bar\partial$-dressing method to construct Desargues maps and the corresponding solutions of the equation. In particular, we identify the Fredholm dete…
In this paper, we construct a generalized Darboux transformation to the coupled Hirota equations with high-order nonlinear effects like the third dispersion, self-steepening and inelastic Raman scattering terms. As application, an Nth-order localized wave solution on the plane backgrounds with the same spectral parameter is derived through the direct iterative rule. In particular, some semi-rational, multi-parametric localized wave solutions are obtained: (1) Vector generalization of the first- and the second-order rogue wave solution; (2) Interactional solutions between a dark-bright soliton …
In this paper we generalize the Sato theory to the extended bigraded Toda hierarchy (EBTH). We revise the definition of the Lax equations, give the Sato equations, wave operators, Hirota bilinear identities (HBI) and show the existence of $tau$ function $τ(t)$. Meanwhile we prove the validity of its Fay-like identities and Hirota bilinear equations (HBEs) in terms of vertex operators whose coefficients take values in the algebra of differential operators. In contrast with HBEs of the usual integrable system, the current HBEs are equations of product of operators involving $e^{\partial_x}$ and $…
We present a new systematic method to construct Abelian functions on Jacobian varieties of plane, algebraic curves. The main tool used is a symmetric generalisation of the bilinear operator defined in the work of Baker and Hirota. We give explicit formulae for the multiple applications of the operators, use them to define infinite sequences of Abelian functions of a prescribed pole structure and deduce the key properties of these functions. We apply the theory on the two canonical curves of genus three, presenting new explicit examples of vector space bases of Abelian functions. These reveal p…

We consider partial sum rules for the homogeneous limit of the solution of the q-deformed Knizhnik--Zamolodchikov equation with reflecting boundaries in the Dyck path representation. We show that these partial sums arise in a solution of the discrete Hirota equation, and prove that they are the generating functions of $τ^2$-weighted punctured cyclically symmetric transpose complement plane partitions where $τ=-(q+q^{-1})$. In the cases of no or minimal punctures, we prove that these generating functions coincide with $τ^2$-enumerations of vertically symmetric alternating sign matrices and modi…
In this short note, we describe a problem in algebraic geometry where the solution involves Catalan numbers. More specifically, we consider the derived category of coherent sheaves on an elliptic surface, and the action of its autoequivalence group on its Bridgeland stability manifold. In solving an equation involving this group action, the generating function of Catalan numbers arises, allowing us to use asymptotic estimates of Catalan numbers to arrive at a bound for the solution set.
Squared singular values of a product of s square random Ginibre matrices are asymptotically characterized by probability distribution P_s(x), such that their moments are equal to the Fuss-Catalan numbers or order s. We find a representation of the Fuss--Catalan distributions P_s(x) in terms of a combination of s hypergeometric functions of the type sF_{s-1}. The explicit formula derived here is exact for an arbitrary positive integer s and for s=1 it reduces to the Marchenko--Pastur distribution. Using similar techniques, involving Mellin transform and the Meijer G-function, we find exact expr…
