The concept of Tomonaga--Luttinger liquids (TLL) on the basis of the free-boson models is ubiquitous in theoretical descriptions of low-energy properties in one-dimensional quantum systems. In this work, we develop a squeezed-field path-integral description for gapless one-dimensional systems beyond the free-boson picture of the TLL paradigm. In the squeezed-field description, the parameter of the Bogoliubov transformation for the TL Hamiltonian becomes a dynamical squeezing field, and its fluctuations give rise to corrections to the free-boson results. We derive an effective nonlinear Lagrangian describing the dispersion relation of the squeezing field, and interactions between the excitations of the TLL and the squeezing modes. Using the effective Lagrangian, we analyze the imaginary-time correlation function of a vertex operator in the non-interacting limit. We show that a side-band branch emerges due to the fluctuation of the squeezing field, in addition to the standard branch of the free-boson model of the TLL paradigm. Furthermore, we perturbatively analyze the spectral function of the density fluctuations for an ultracold Bose gas in one dimension. We evaluate the renormalized values of the phase velocities and spectral weights of the TLL and side-band branches due to the interaction between the TLL and the squeezing modes. At zero temperature, the renormalized dispersion relations are linear in the momentum, but at nonzero temperatures, these acquire a nonlinear dependence on the momentum due to the thermal population of the excitation branches.
We derive the dynamical structure factor for an inhomogeneous Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid as can be formed in a confined strongly interacting one-dimensional gas. In view of current experimental progress in the field, we provide a simple analytic expression for the light-scattering cross section, requiring only the knowledge of the density dependence of the ground-state energy, as they can be extracted e.g. from exact or Quantum Monte Carlo techniques, and a Thomas-Fermi description. We apply the result to the case of one-dimensional quantum bosonic gases with dipolar interaction in a harmonic t…
We study the energy deposition in a one dimensional interacting quantum system with a point like potential modulated in amplitude. The point like potential at position $x=0$ has a constant part and a small oscillation in time with a frequency $ω$. We use bosonization, renormalization group and linear response theory to calculate the corresponding energy deposition. It exhibits a power law behavior as a function of the frequency that reflects the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) nature of the system. Depending on the interactions in the system, characterized by the TLL parameter $K$ of the syste…
We describe the dimensional crossover in a noninteracting Fermi gas in an anisotropic trap, obtained by populating various transverse modes of the trap. We study the dynamical structure factor and drag force. Starting from a dimension $d$, the $(\!d\!+\!1\!)$-dimensional case is obtained to a good approximation with relatively few modes. We show that the dynamical structure factor of a gas in a $d$-dimensional harmonic trap simulates an effective $2d$-dimensional box trap. We focus then on the experimentally relevant situation when only a portion of the gas in harmonic confinement is probed an…
Prethermalization refers to the relaxation to a quasi-stationary state before reaching thermal equilibrium. Recently, it is found that not only local conserved quantities but also entanglement plays a key role in a special type of prethermalization, called entanglement prethermalization. Here, we show that in the Tomonaga-Luttinger model the entanglement prethermalization can also be explained by the conventional prethermalization of two independent subsystems without entanglement. Moreover, it is argued that prethermalization in the Tomonaga-Luttinger model is essentially different from entan…
Strongly correlated quantum systems often display universal behavior as, in certain regimes, their properties are found to be independent of the microscopic details of the underlying system. An example of such a situation is the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid description of one-dimensional strongly correlated bosonic or fermionic systems. Here we investigate how such a quantum liquid responds under dissipative dephasing dynamics and, in particular, we identify how the universal Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid properties melt away. Our study, based on adiabatic elimination, shows that dephasing first tran…
A simple set of algebraic equations is derived for the exact low-temperature thermodynamics of one-dimensional multi-component strongly attractive fermionic atoms with enlarged SU(N) spin symmetry and Zeeman splitting. Universal multi-component Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) phases are thus determined. For linear Zeeman splitting, the physics of the gapless phase at low temperatures belongs to the universality class of a two-component asymmetric TLL corresponding to spin-neutral N-atom composites and spin-(N-1)/2 single atoms. The equation of states is also obtained to open up the study of mu…
Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids (TLLs) can be used to effectively describe one-dimensional quantum many-body systems such as ultracold atoms, charges in nanowires, superconducting circuits, and gapless spin chains. Their properties are given by two parameters, the propagation velocity and the Luttinger parameter. Here we study inhomogeneous TLLs where these are promoted to functions of position and demonstrate that they profoundly affect the dynamics: In general, besides curving the light cone, we show that propagation is no longer ballistically localized to the light-cone trajectories, different f…
We investigate the physics of a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid of spin-polarized fermions superimposed on an ion chain. This compound system features (attractive) long-range interspecies interactions. By means of density matrix renormalization group techniques we compute the Tomonaga-Luttinger-liquid parameter and speed of sound as a function of the relative atom/ion density and the two quantum defect parameters, namely, the even and odd short-range phases which characterize the short-range part of the atom-ion polarization potential. The presence of ions is found to allow critical tuning of the at…

We study the dynamics resulting out of an abrupt change of the two-particle interaction in two models of closed one-dimensional Fermi systems: (a) the field theoretical Tomonaga-Luttinger model and (b) a microscopic lattice model. Using a nonperturbative approach which is controlled for small two-particle interactions we are able to reach large times allowing us to access the properties of the steady state of the lattice model. Comparing those to the exact solution of the full dynamics in the Tomonaga-Luttinger model we provide evidence for universal Luttinger liquid behavior.
Universal scaling relations for dissipative Tomonaga-Luttinger (TL) liquids with SU($N$) spin symmetry are obtained for both fermions and bosons, by using asymptotic Bethe-ansatz solutions and conformal field theory (CFT) in one-dimensional non-Hermitian quantum many-body systems with SU($N$) symmetry. We uncover that the spectrum of dissipative TL liquids with SU($N$) spin symmetry is described by the sum of one charge mode characterized by a complex generalization of $c=1$ U(1) Gaussian CFT, and $N-1$ spin modes characterized by level-$1$ SU($N$) Kac-Moody algebra with the conformal anomaly …
We study the quantum quench in two coupled Tomonaga-Luttinger Liquids (TLLs), from the off-critical to the critical regime, relying on the conformal field theory approach and the known solutions for single TLLs. We consider a squeezed form of the initial state, whose low energy limit is fixed in a way to describe a massive and a massless mode, and we encode the non-equilibrium dynamics in a proper rescaling of the time. In this way, we compute several correlation functions, which at leading order factorize into multipoint functions evaluated at different times for the two modes. Depending on t…
We demonstrate the universal properties of dissipative Tomonaga-Luttinger (TL) liquids by calculating correlation functions and performing finite-size scaling analysis of a non-Hermitian XXZ spin chain as a prototypical model in one-dimensional open quantum many-body systems. Our analytic calculation is based on effective field theory with bosonization, finite-size scaling approach in conformal field theory, and the Bethe-ansatz solution. Our numerical analysis is based on the density-matrix renormalization group generalized to non-Hermitian systems (NH-DMRG). We uncover that the model in the …
