Prethermalization refers to the relaxation to a quasi-stationary state before reaching thermal equilibrium. Recently, it is found that not only local conserved quantities but also entanglement plays a key role in a special type of prethermalization, called entanglement prethermalization. Here, we show that in the Tomonaga-Luttinger model the entanglement prethermalization can also be explained by the conventional prethermalization of two independent subsystems without entanglement. Moreover, it is argued that prethermalization in the Tomonaga-Luttinger model is essentially different from entanglement prethermalization in the Lieb-Liniger model because of the different types of energy degeneracies.
A simple set of algebraic equations is derived for the exact low-temperature thermodynamics of one-dimensional multi-component strongly attractive fermionic atoms with enlarged SU(N) spin symmetry and Zeeman splitting. Universal multi-component Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) phases are thus determined. For linear Zeeman splitting, the physics of the gapless phase at low temperatures belongs to the universality class of a two-component asymmetric TLL corresponding to spin-neutral N-atom composites and spin-(N-1)/2 single atoms. The equation of states is also obtained to open up the study of mu…
Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids (TLLs) can be used to effectively describe one-dimensional quantum many-body systems such as ultracold atoms, charges in nanowires, superconducting circuits, and gapless spin chains. Their properties are given by two parameters, the propagation velocity and the Luttinger parameter. Here we study inhomogeneous TLLs where these are promoted to functions of position and demonstrate that they profoundly affect the dynamics: In general, besides curving the light cone, we show that propagation is no longer ballistically localized to the light-cone trajectories, different f…
Uniform-field effects for frustrated odd-leg integer-spin tubes (cylinder type spin systems) are investigated in the weak interchain-coupling regime. We predict that, as the field exceeds the spin gap, a two-component Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) appears due to the condensation of the doubly degenerate lowest magnons. Furthermore, it is argued that when the uniform field is so strong that the second lowest magnons are also condensed, the two-component TLL is destroyed and a new one-component TLL emerges. This quantum phase transition may be detected as a magnetization cusp.
We detail the experimental observation of the non-equilibrium many-body phenomenon prethermalization. We study the dynamics of a rapidly and coherently split one-dimensional Bose gas. An analysis based on the use of full quantum mechanical probability distributions of matter wave interference contrast reveals that the system evolves towards a quasi-steady state. This state, which can be characterized by an effective temperature, is not the final thermal equilibrium state. We compare the evolution of the system to an integrable Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid model and show that the system dephases t…
The frustrated three-leg antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 tube with a weak interchain coupling in a magnetic field is investigated by means of Abelian bosonization techniques. It is clearly shown that a vector chiral order and a one-component Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid coexist in a wide magnetic-field region from a state with a small magnetization to a nearly saturated one. The chiral order is predicted to still survive in the intermediate plateau state. We further predict that (even) when the strength of one bond in the three rung couplings is decreased (increased), an Ising type quantum phase trans…
Universal scaling relations for dissipative Tomonaga-Luttinger (TL) liquids with SU($N$) spin symmetry are obtained for both fermions and bosons, by using asymptotic Bethe-ansatz solutions and conformal field theory (CFT) in one-dimensional non-Hermitian quantum many-body systems with SU($N$) symmetry. We uncover that the spectrum of dissipative TL liquids with SU($N$) spin symmetry is described by the sum of one charge mode characterized by a complex generalization of $c=1$ U(1) Gaussian CFT, and $N-1$ spin modes characterized by level-$1$ SU($N$) Kac-Moody algebra with the conformal anomaly …
We study the quantum quench in two coupled Tomonaga-Luttinger Liquids (TLLs), from the off-critical to the critical regime, relying on the conformal field theory approach and the known solutions for single TLLs. We consider a squeezed form of the initial state, whose low energy limit is fixed in a way to describe a massive and a massless mode, and we encode the non-equilibrium dynamics in a proper rescaling of the time. In this way, we compute several correlation functions, which at leading order factorize into multipoint functions evaluated at different times for the two modes. Depending on t…
We demonstrate the universal properties of dissipative Tomonaga-Luttinger (TL) liquids by calculating correlation functions and performing finite-size scaling analysis of a non-Hermitian XXZ spin chain as a prototypical model in one-dimensional open quantum many-body systems. Our analytic calculation is based on effective field theory with bosonization, finite-size scaling approach in conformal field theory, and the Bethe-ansatz solution. Our numerical analysis is based on the density-matrix renormalization group generalized to non-Hermitian systems (NH-DMRG). We uncover that the model in the …
Motivated by recent studies on the quasi-one-dimensional (1D) antiferromagnet BaCo2V2O8, we investigate the Tomonaga-Luttinger-liquid properties of the 1D S=1/2 XXZ Heisenberg-Ising model in magnetic fields. By using the Bethe ansatz solution, thermodynamic quantities and the divergence exponent of the NMR relaxation rate are calculated. We observe a magnetization minimum as a function of temperature (T) close to the critical field. As the magnetic field approaches the critical field, the minimum temperature asymptotically approaches the universal relation in agreement with the recent results …
We discuss expectation values of the twist operator $U$ appearing in the Lieb-Schultz-Mattis theorem (or the polarization operator for periodic systems) in excited states of the one-dimensional correlated systems $z_L^{(q,\pm)}\equiv\braket{Ψ_{q/2}^{\pm}|U^q|Ψ_{q/2}^{\pm}}$, where $\ket{Ψ_{p}^{\pm}}$ denotes the excited states given by linear combinations of momentum $2pk_{\rm F}$ with parity $\pm 1$. We found that $z_L^{(q,\pm)}$ gives universal values $\pm 1/2$ on the Tomonaga-Luttinger (TL) fixed point, and its signs identify the topology of the dominant phases. Therefore, this expectation …
We present a novel treatment of finite temperature properties of the one-dimensional Hubbard model. Our approach is based on a Trotter-Suzuki mapping utilizing Shastry's classical model and a subsequent investigation of the quantum transfer matrix. We derive non-linear integral equations for three auxiliary functions which have a clear physical interpretation of elementary excitations of spin type and charge excitations in lower and upper Hubbard bands. This allows for a transparent analytical study of certain limiting cases as well as for precise numerical investigations. We present data for …
We study the effect of a quantum quench between two tunnel coupled Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids (TLLs) with different speed of sound and interaction parameter. The quench dynamics is induced by switching off the tunnelling and letting the two systems evolve independently. We fully diagonalize the problem within a quadratic approximation for the initial tunnelling. Both the case of zero and finite temperature in the initial state are considered. We focus on correlation functions associated with the antisymmetric and symmetric combinations of the two TLLs (relevant for interference measurements), …
We study the entanglement spectrum (ES) and entropy between two coupled Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids (TLLs) on parallel periodic chains. This problem gives access to the entanglement properties of various interesting systems, such as spin ladders as well as two-dimensional topological phases. By expanding interchain interactions to quadratic order in bosonic fields, we are able to calculate the ES for both gapped and gapless systems using only methods for free theories. In certain gapless phases of coupled non-chiral TLLs, we interestingly find an ES with a dispersion relation proportional to th…
The Luttinger model was introduced to illustrate the theory of Tomonaga via an exactly soluble model. It became soon the subject of great interest also on the part of Mathematical Physics and a key to the investigations of the mathematical properties of Condensed Matter Physics. This paper reviews aspects of the above developments relevant for renormalization group methods.
We consider a system of two coupled Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids (TLL) on parallel chains and study the Renyi entanglement entropy $S_n$ between the two chains. Here the entanglement cut is introduced between the chains, not along the perpendicular direction as used in previous studies of one-dimensional systems. The limit $n\to1$ corresponds to the von Neumann entanglement entropy. The system is effectively described by two-component bosonic field theory with different TLL parameters in the symmetric/antisymmetric channels as far as the coupled system remains in a gapless phase. We argue that i…
We develop a new formulation of the functional renormalization group (RG) for interacting fermions. Our approach unifies the purely fermionic formulation based on the Grassmannian functional integral, which has been used in recent years by many authors, with the traditional Wilsonian RG approach to quantum systems pioneered by Hertz [Phys. Rev. B 14, 1165 (1976)], which attempts to describe the infrared behavior of the system in terms of an effective bosonic theory associated with the soft modes of the underlying fermionic problem. In our approach, we decouple the interaction by means of a sui…
