Lasers based on biological materials are attracting an increasing interest in view of their use in integrated and transient photonics. DNA as optical biopolymer in combination with highly-emissive dyes has been reported to have excellent potential in this respect, however achieving miniaturized lasing systems based on solid-state DNA shaped in different geometries to confine and enhance emission is still a challenge, and physico-chemical mechanisms originating fluorescence enhancement are not fully understood. Herein, a class of wavelength-tunable lasers based on DNA nanofibers is demonstrated, for which optical properties are highly controlled through the system morphology. A synergistic effect is highlighted at the basis of lasing action. Through a quantum chemical investigation, we show that the interaction of DNA with the encapsulated dye leads to hindered twisting and suppressed channels for the non-radiative decay. This is combined with effective waveguiding, optical gain, and tailored mode confinement to promote morphologically-controlled lasing in DNA-based nanofibers. The results establish design rules for the development of bright and tunable nanolasers and optical networks based on DNA nanostructures.
Advance designs of random lasers towards development of miniature laser systems are in demand. We demonstrated random lasing from Rhodamine-B dye attached to polystyrene micro-spheres. Bare polystyrene spheres were used as scatterers and these provided optical feedback to the gain. Random lasing was successfully demonstrated in two different disordered environments, in binary colloidal mixture solution and in photonic glass. Incoherent feedback occurred in both the cases and single wavelength lasing were obtained. The lasing threshold in case of photonic glass was lower in comparison to binary…
Distributed feedback (DFB) dye lasing by polarization modulation is studied theoretically on the basis of modified rate equations. Numerical solution of these equations allows to obtain the generated power dynamics and the dependence of laser energy on pump energy. The results of calculations are in good qualitative agreement with the experimental data.
We report on low-threshold and narrow linewidth intensity feedback random lasing in Rhodamine 6G dye-doped polyurethane with dispersed ZrO$_2$ nanoparticles. Depending on the dye/particle concentration, the lasing threshold is (6.8--15.4) MW/cm$^2$ and the linewidth is (4--6) nm. The lasing threshold as a function of nanoparticle concentration is found to follow a power law with an exponent of $-0.496 \pm 0.010$, which is within uncertainty of Burin et al.'s theoretical prediction [Phys. Rev. Lett. 87, 215503 (2001)].
The work was aimed to generate random laser emissions simultaneously at two wavelengths in a weakly scattering system containing mixture of binary dyes, rhodamine-B (Rh-B) and oxazine-170 (O-170) dispersed with ZnO nano-particles served as scattering centres. Random lasing performances for individual Rh-B dye were extensively studied for varying small signal gain/scatterer density and found lasing threshold significantly depend upon number density of dispersed nano-particles. In spite of inefficient pumping, we demonstrated possibility of random lasing in O-170 dye solution on account of reson…
We report laser emission from single, stationary, Rhodamine B-doped glycerol/water microdroplets located on a superhydrophobic surface. In the experiments, a pulsed, frequency-doubled Nd:YAG laser operating at 532 nm was used as the excitation source. The microdroplets ranged in diameter from a few to 20 um. Lasing was achieved in the red-shifted portion of the dye emission spectrum with threshold fluences as low as 750 J/cm2. Photobleaching was observed when the microdroplets were pumped above threshold. In certain cases, multimode lasing was also observed and attributed to the simultaneous l…
Effect of a planar texture quality and its thickness on lasing spectrums and thresholds in dye-doped cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) of steroid type is explored. Transition from the qualitative planar texture to the poor texture quality is accompanied by change of characteristic mode structures and by shift of barycentre in the long-wave side and the considerable growth of the lasing threshold. It is found that in the CLC texture created by substrates with perpendicular directions of orientation the stable single-mode lasing takes place. The nature of oscillated modes in such texture is cause…
We report the observation of intensity feedback random lasing at 645 nm in Disperse Orange 11 dye-doped PMMA (DO11/PMMA) with dispersed ZrO$_2$ nanoparticles (NPs). The lasing threshold is found to increase with concentration, with the lasing threshold for 0.1 wt\% being $75.8 \pm 9.4$ MW/cm$^2$ and the lasing threshold for 0.5 wt\% being $121.1 \pm 2.1$ MW/cm$^2$, with the linewidth for both concentrations found to be $\approx 10$ nm. We also consider the material's photostability and find that it displays fully reversible photodegradation with the photostability and recovery rate being great…
In the presence of Rashba-Dresselhaus coupling, strong spin-orbit interactions in liquid crystal optical cavities result in a distinctive spin-split entangled dispersion. Spin coherence between such modes give rise to an optical persistent-spin-helix. In this letter, we introduce optical gain in such a system, by dispersing a molecular dye in a liquid-crystal microcavity. We demonstrate both lasing in the Rashba-Dresselhaus regime and the emergence of an optical persistent spin helix.
We present the first observation, to our knowledge, of lasing from a levitated, dye droplet. The levitated droplets are created by computer controlled pico-liter dispensing into one of the nodes of a standing ultrasonic wave (100 kHz), where the droplet is trapped. The free hanging droplet forms a high quality optical resonator. Our 750 nL lasing droplets consist of Rhodamine 6G dissolved in ethylene glycol, at a concentration of 0.02 M. The droplets are optically pumped at 532 nm light from a pulsed, frequency doubled Nd:YAG laser, and the dye laser emission is analyzed by a fixed grating spe…
The authors report on a room-temperature nanoimprinted, DNA-based distributed feedback (DFB) laser operating at 605 nm. The laser is made of a pure DNA host matrix doped with gain dyes. At high excitation densities, the emission of the untextured dye-doped DNA films is characterized by a broad emission peak with an overall linewidth of 12 nm and superimposed narrow peaks, characteristic of random lasing. Moreover, direct patterning of the DNA films is demonstrated with a resolution down to 100 nm, enabling the realization of both surface-emitting and edge-emitting DFB lasers with a typical lin…
Dye-doped hybrid silicate/titanium nanofilms on the glass substrate in the structure of asymmetrical waveguides were studied as the laser system. The spatial and spectral features of laser oscillation of genuine and hollow waveguides were determined. Their lasing thresholds of a two-order difference of pumping power were identified. The calculated cutoff thickness for waveguides of 100 nm did not exceed their actual thickness of 300nm. The overall pattern of stimulated emission included two concurrent processes: one-mode waveguide lasing and the lateral beam emission of small divergence emanat…
Random lasing occurs as the result of a coherent optical feedback from multiple scattering centers. Here, we demonstrate that plasmonic gold nanostars are efficient light scattering centers, exhibiting strong field enhancement at their nanotips, which assists a very narrow bandwidth and highly amplified coherent random lasing with a low lasing threshold. First, by embedding plasmonic gold nanostars in a rhodamine 6G dye gain medium, we observe a series of very narrow random lasing peaks with full-width at half-maximum ~ 0.8 nm. In contrast, free rhodamine 6G dye molecules exhibit only a single…
We present a detailed numerical investigation of the tunability of a diffusive random laser when Mie resonances are excited. We solve a multimode diffusion model and calculate multiple light scattering in presence of optical gain which includes dispersion in both scattering and gain, without any assumptions about the $β$ parameter. This allows us to investigate a realistic photonic glass made of latex spheres and rhodamine and to quantify both the lasing wavelength tunability range and the lasing threshold. Beyond what is expected by diffusive monochromatic models, the highest threshold is fou…
We demonstrate an electrically controlled coherent random lasing with silver nano-particles dispersed in a dye-doped nematic liquid crystal (NLC), in which external electric field dependent emission intensity and frequency-splitting are recorded. A modified rate equation model is proposed to interpret the observed coherent lasing, which is a manifestation of double enhancements, caused by the plasmon-polariton near-fields of Ag particles, on the population inversion of laser dye molecules and the optical energy density of lasing modes. The noticeable quenching of lasing resonances in a weak ap…
We present a laterally emitting, coupled cavity micro fluidic dye ring laser, suitable for integration into lab-on-a-chip micro systems. The micro-fluidic laser has been successfully designed, fabricated, characterized and modelled. The resonator is formed by a micro-fluidic channel bounded by two isosceles triangle mirrors. The micro-fluidic laser structure is defined using photo lithography in 10 microns thick SU-8 polymer on a glass substrate. The micro fluidic channel is sealed by a glass lid, using PMMA adhesive bonding. The laser is characterized using the laser dye Rhodamine 6G dissolve…
Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) are more promising than other kinds of semiconductor QDs because of their photostability and biocompatibility in different applications such as bioimaging, biosensing and light emitting diodes (LEDs). In addition, advances in random lasers (RLs) have led to an emerging desire for developing remote sensing and detecting strategies, lightning and imaging systems that are far cheaper, more precise and simpler. Although combining GQDs and RLs seems promising for the development of advanced biosensing and bioimaging systems, the RLs fabricated based on GQDs have been ra…
We present a detailed study of the gain length in an active medium obtained by doping of DNA strands with DCM dye molecules. The superior thermal stability of the composite and its low quenching, permits to obtain optical gain coefficient larger than 300 cm^-1. We also show that such an active material is excellent for integration into photonic nano-structures, to achieve, for example, efficient random lasing emission, and fluorescent photonic crystals.
This letter describes the design and operation of a polymer-based third order distributed feed-back (DFB) microfluidic dye laser. The device relies on light-confinement in a nano-structured polymer film where an array of nanofluidic channels is filled by capillary action with a liquid dye solution which has a refractive index lower than that of the polymer. In combination with a third order DFB grating, formed by the array of nanofluidic channels, this yields a low threshold for lasing. The laser is straight-forward to integrate on Lab-on-a-Chip micro-systems where coherent, tunable light in t…
Gaseous ammonia has previously been demonstrated as a compelling gain medium for a quantum cascade laser pumped molecular laser (QPML), exhibiting good power efficiency but limited tunability. Here we explore the potential of the ammonia QPML to produce powerful, broadly tunable terahertz frequency lasing on rotational and pure inversion transitions. After theoretically predicting possible laser frequencies, pump thresholds, and efficiencies, we experimentally demonstrate unprecedented tunability -- from 0.762 to more than 4.5 THz -- by pumping Q- and R-branch infrared transitions with widely …
Arrays of metallic particles patterned on a substrate have emerged as a promising design for on-chip plasmonic lasers. In past examples of such devices, the periodic particles provided feedback at a single resonance wavelength, and organic dye molecules were used as the gain material. Here, we introduce a flexible template-based fabrication method that allows a broader design space for Ag particle-array lasers. Instead of dye molecules, we integrate colloidal quantum dots (QDs), which offer better photostability and wavelength tunability. Our fabrication approach also allows us to easily adjus…
Following experimental realizations of room temperature polariton lasing with organic molecules, we present a microscopic model that allows us to explore the crossover from weak to strong matter-light coupling. We consider a non-equilibrium Dicke-Holstein model, including both strong coupling to vibrational modes and strong matter-light coupling, providing the phase diagram of this model in the thermodynamic limit. We discuss the mechanism of polariton lasing, uncovering a process of self-tuning, and identify the relation and distinction between regular dye lasers and organic polariton lasers.
One of the fundamental difficulties in implementing organic dyes in random lasers is irreversible photodegradation of the dye molecules, leading to loss of performance and the need to replace the dye. We report the observation of self-healing after photodegradation in a Rhodamine 6G dye and nanoparticle doped polyurethane random laser. During irradiation we observe two distinct temporal regions in which the random lasing (RL) emission first increases in intensity and redshifts, followed by further redshifting, spectral broadening, and decay in the emission intensity. After irradiation the emis…
We demonstrate lasing mode selection in nearly circular semiconductor microdisks by shaping the spatial profile of optical pump. Despite of strong mode overlap, adaptive pumping suppresses all lasing modes except the targeted one. Due to slight deformation of the cavity shape and boundary roughness, each lasing mode has distinct emission pattern. By selecting different mode to be the dominant lasing mode, we can switch both the lasing frequency and the output direction. Such tunability by external pump after the laser is fabricated enhances the functionality of semiconductor microcavity lasers…
We have demonstrated an ultrahigh-Q whispering-gallery-mode (WGM) microsphere laser based on the evanescent-wave-coupled gain. Dye molecules outside the sphere near the equator were excited, resulting in WGM lasing in the lowest radial mode order. The loaded quality factor of the lasing WGM was 8(2)\times 10^9, the highest ever achieved in the microlaser.
A tunable and switchable multi-wavelength erbium-doped fiber ring laser based on a new type tunable comb filter is proposed and demonstrated. By adjusting the polarization controllers, dual-function operation of the channel spacing tunability and the wavelength switching (interleaving) can be readily achieved. Up to 29 stable lasing lines with 0.4 nm spacing and 14 lasing wavelengths with 0.8 nm spacing in 3 dB bandwidth were obtained at room temperature. In addition, the lasing output, including the number of the lasing lines, the lasing evenness and the lasing locations, can also be flexibly…
Polymer micro- and nano-fibers, made of organic light-emitting materials with optical gain, show interesting lasing properties. Fibers with diameters from few tens of nm to few microns can be fabricated by electrospinning, a method based on electrostatic fields applied to a polymer solution. The morphology and emission properties of these fibers, composed of optically inert polymers embedding laser dyes, are characterized by scanning electron and fluorescence microscopy, and lasing is observed under optical pumping for fluences of the order of 10^2 microJ cm^-2. In addition, light-emitting fib…
Steady-state plasmonic lasing is studied theoretically for a system consisting of many dye molecules arranged regularly around a gold nano-sphere. A three-level model with realistic molecular dissipation is employed to analyze the performance as function of the pump field amplitude and number of molecules. Few molecules and moderate pumping produce a single narrow emission peak because the excited molecules transfer energy to a single dipole plasmon mode by amplified spontaneous emission. Under strong pumping, the single peak splits into broader and weaker emission peaks because two molecular …
Random lasers (RLs) are intriguing devices with promising applications as light sources for imaging, sensing, super resolution spectral analysis or complex networks engineering. RLs can be obtained from optically pumped dyes, optical fibers and crystals, or electrically pumped semiconductor heterostructures. Semicon-ductor RLs are usually fabricated by introducing scattering defects into the active layer, adding a degree of complexity to the fabrication process and losing the ease of realization potentially offered by disordered structures. Ready availability of electrically pumped RLs, avoidi…

The nanoscale mode volumes of surface plasmon polaritons have enabled plasmonic lasers and condensates with ultrafast operation. Most plasmonic lasers are based on noble metals, rendering the optical mode structure inert to external fields. Here, we demonstrate active magnetic-field control over lasing in a periodic array of Co/Pt multilayer nanodots immersed in an IR-140 dye solution. We exploit the magnetic nature of the nanoparticles combined with mode tailoring to control the lasing action. Under circularly polarized excitation, angle-resolved photoluminescence measurements reveal a transi…
Liquid dye lasers have long been considered as ideal tunable laser sources in the visible range but are bulky, expensive, and require a complex system for dye circulation. Here, we present a system that relies on a low-cost blue laser diode as the pump source and a sealed dye cell with no flowing circuitry, resulting in a device that combines the convenience and size of a solid-state device with the stability of a liquid organic laser. A very high photo-stability is obtained (up to 1.2 x 10$^9$ pulses or 12 days at 1 kHz), which is five orders of magnitude higher than a solid-state dye laser o…
Stimulated emission in small-molecule organic films at a high dye concentration is generally hindered by fluorescence quenching, especially in the red region of the spectrum. Here we demonstrate the achievement of high net gains (up to 50 cm-1) around 640 nm in thermally evaporated non-doped films of 4-di(4'-tert-butylbiphenyl-4-yl)amino-4'-dicyanovinylbenzene, which makes this material suitable for green-light pumped single-mode organic lasers with low threshold and superior stability. Lasing effect is demonstrated in a DBR resonator configuration, as well as under the form of random lasing a…
This paper demonstrates an arbitrary tunable spaser based on double-Fano resonance of a plasmonic nanostructure consisting of two sets of disk-ring (TSDR) nanostructure. TSDR nanostructure supports two Fano resonances, which can be served as the lasing mode and the pumping mode of a spaser. These two mode can be tuned in a very wide wavelength range because of the good tunability of the two nanorings. The tuning range of the lasing mode and the pumping mode can be reached to 710 nm and 620 nm. These results represent a significant step in the pursuit of ultimate spasers and propose a approach …
Photoluminescence (PL) has become a common tool to characterize various properties of single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) chirality distribution and the level of tube individualization in SWCNT samples. Most PL studies employ conventional lamp light sources whose spectral distribution is filtered with a monochromator but this results in a still impure spectrum with a low spectral intensity. Tunable dye lasers offer a tunable light source which cover the desired excitation wavelength range with a high spectral intensity, but their operation is often cumbersome. Here, we present the design and…

The observation of photoluminescence (PL) or achieve lasing modes in alcohol solutions of dyes or other media (silica glass fibers), doped in small quantities by certain active working elements, which are dipped in the environment, do not requires start the inversion, since the main role in time of the optical pumping process is given four-photon interaction and the associated amplification of those frequency components, that result from this interaction, and participating in the PL or generation.
We report a time-resolved study of the thermalization dynamics and the lasing to photon Bose-Einstein condensation crossover by in-\textit{situ} monitoring the photon kinetics in a dye microcavity. When the equilibration of the light to the dye temperature by absorption and re-emission is faster than photon loss in the cavity, the optical spectrum becomes Bose-Einstein distributed and photons accumulate at low-energy states, forming a Bose-Einstein condensate. The thermalization of the photon gas and its evolution from nonequilibrium initial distributions to condensation is monitored in real-t…
Organic exciton-photon polariton lasers have recently been shown to be remarkable candidates for the realization of efficient sources of coherent light operating at room temperature. While their thresholds are now comparable with conventional organic photon lasers, tuning of molecular conformation and orientation as a means to further enhance their performance remains largely unexplored. Here, we first report a two-fold reduction in the threshold of a polariton laser based on a high-Q microcavity filled with an active layer of poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene) (PFO) when 15% β-phase conformation is in…
Localized surface plasmon resonances have recently attracted considerable attention due to their ability to dramatically enhance near-field optical intensities and boost nanoscale light-matter interactions. Here we demonstrate unambiguously that polyhedral silver nanoparticles can be tailored to promote enhanced coherent emission from organic dye dispersions in a cavity. In particular, we observe that nanoparticles supporting resonances close to the absorption peak of the dye yield to more efficient lasing, up to one order of magnitude, which is also evidenced by the narrowing of the emission …

Whispering-gallery mode (WGM) resonators combine small optical mode volumes with narrow resonance linewidths, making them exciting platforms for a variety of applications. Here we report a flying WGM microlaser, realized by optically trapping a dye-doped microparticle within a liquid-filled hollow-core photonic crystal fiber (HC-PCF) using a CW laser and then pumping it with a pulsed excitation laser whose wavelength matches the absorption band of the dye. The laser emits into core-guided modes that can be detected at the endfaces of the HC-PCF. Using radiation forces, the microlaser can be fr…

Electrically-tunable optical properties in materials are desirable for many applications ranging from displays to lasing and optical communication. In most two-dimensional thin-films and other quantum confined materials, these constants have been measured accurately. However, the optical constants of single wall nanotubes (SWCNT) as a function of electrostatic tuning are yet to be measured due to lack of electronic purity and spatial homogeneity over large areas. Here, we measure the basic optical constants of ultrathin high-purity (>99%) semiconducting single wall carbon nanotube (s-SWCNT) fi…
