We implement full polarization tomography on the photon correlations in a spinor exciton-polariton condensate. Our measurements reveal condensate pseudospin mean-field dynamics spanning from stochastic switching between linear polarization components, limit cycles, and stable fixed points, and their intrinsic relation to the condensate photon statistics. We optically harness the cavity birefringence, polariton interactions, and the optical orientation of the photoexcited exciton background to engineer photon statistics with precise control. Our results demonstrate a smooth transition from a highly coherent to a super-thermal state of the condensate polarization components.
We investigate theoretically the creation, persistence and detection of quantized vortices in nonequilibrium polariton condensates within a stochastic classical field model. The life time of the quantized vortices is shown to increase with the spatial coherence and to depend on the geometry of the condensate. The relation with superfluidity in conventional superfluids is discussed. Three different ways to measure the vorticity of the polariton condensate are proposed.
Semiconductor microcavities are often influenced by structural imperfections, which can disturb the flow and dynamics of exciton-polariton condensates. Additionally, in exciton-polariton condensates there is a variety of dynamical scenarios and instabilities, owing to the properties of the incoherent excitonic reservoir. We investigate the dynamics of an exciton-polariton condensate which emerges in semiconductor microcavity subject to disorder, which determines its spatial and temporal behaviour. Our experimental data revealed complex burst-like time evolution under non-resonant optical pulse…
We theoretically investigate a spinor polariton condensate under nonresonant pumping, based on driven-dissipative Gross-Pitaevskii equations coupled to the rate equation of a spin-unpolarized reservoir. We find the homogeneous polariton condensate can transit from the spin-unpolarized phase, where it is linearly polarized, to the spin-polarized phase, where it is elliptically polarized, depending on the cross-spin versus same-spin interactions and the linear polarization splitting. In both phases, we study elementary excitations using Bogoliubov approach, in a regime where the decay rate of to…
Spinorial or multi-component Bose-Einstein condensates may sustain fractional quanta of circulation, vorticant topological excitations with half integer windings of phase and polarization. Matter-light quantum fluids, such as microcavity polaritons, represent a unique test bed for realising strongly interacting and out-of-equilibrium condensates. The direct access to the phase of their wavefunction enables us to pursue the quest of whether half vortices ---rather than full integer vortices--- are the fundamental topological excitations of a spinor polariton fluid. Here, we are able to directly…
Recently a new type of system exhibiting spontaneous coherence has emerged -- the exciton-polariton condensate. Exciton-polaritons (or polaritons for short) are bosonic quasiparticles that exist inside semiconductor microcavities, consisting of a superposition of an exciton and a cavity photon. Above a threshold density the polaritons macroscopically occupy the same quantum state, forming a condensate. The lifetime of the polaritons are typically comparable to or shorter than thermalization times, making them possess an inherently non-equilibrium nature. Nevertheless, they display many of the …
Exciton-polariton condensate in semiconductor microcavities constitute a novel kind of non-equilibrium superfluid. In a recent experiment [P. Stepanov, {\it et. al.,} Nat. Commun. {\bf 10}, 1038 (2019)], the dispersion relation of collective excitations in a polariton condensate under the resonant pumping has been investigated with the emphasis on the role of reservoir of long-lived excitons in determining the superfluidity. Inspired by such an experimental advance, we study the superfluidity of a exciton-polaritonn condensate under non-resonant pumping by calculating the drag force exerted on…
We describe oblique half-solitons, a new type of topological defects in a two dimensional spinor Bose Einstein condensate. A realistic protocol based on the optical spin Hall effect is proposed toward their generation within an exciton-polariton system.
We report a record-size, two-dimensional polariton condensate of a fraction of a millimeter radius free from the presence of an exciton reservoir. This macroscopically occupied state is formed by the ballistically expanding polariton flow that relaxes and condenses over a large area outside of the excitation spot. The density of this trap-free condensate is < 1 polariton/μm^2, reducing the phase noise induced by the interaction energy. Moreover, the backflow effect, recently predicted for the nonparabolic polariton dispersion, is observed here for the first time in the fast-expanding wave pack…
We propose a new system for the study of event horizons and black holes - a Bose-Einstein condensate of exciton-polaritons. Hawking radiation from a closed horizon in 2D is observed in numerical experiments. We simulate inter-Universe and intra-Universe wormholes capitalizing on the spinor nature of polariton condensates and on the spin dependence of polariton-polariton interactions.
We perform quantum tomography on one-dimensional polariton condensates, spontaneously occurring in linear disorder valleys in a CdTe planar microcavity sample. By the use of optical interferometric techniques, we determine the first-order coherence function and the amplitude and phase of the order parameter of the condensate, providing a full reconstruction of the single particle density matrix for the polariton system. The experimental data are used as input to theoretically test the consistency of Penrose-Onsager criterion for Bose-Einstein condensation in the framework of nonequilibrium pol…
We present a quantum jump approach to describe coupled quantum and classical systems in the context of Bose-Einstein condensation in the solid state. In our formalism, the excitonic gain medium is described by classical rate equations, while the polariton modes are described fully quantum mechanically. We show the equivalence of our method with a master equation approach. As an application, we compute the linewidth of a single mode polariton condensate. Both the line broadening due to the interactions between polaritons and the interactions with the reservoir excitons is taken into account.
Quasiparticles in semiconductors -- such as microcavity polaritons -- can form condensates in which the steady-state density profile is set by the balance of pumping and decay. By taking account of the polarization degree of freedom for a polariton condensate, and considering the effects of an applied magnetic field, we theoretically discuss the interplay between polarization dynamics, and the spatial structure of the pumped decaying condensate. If spatial structure is neglected, this dynamics has attractors that are linearly polarized condensates (fixed points), and desynchronized solutions (…
The study of superfluid and Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless phases in exciton-polaritons requires an understanding of vortex dynamics in a dissipative unconfined condensate. In this article we study the motion of dynamic vortex-antivortex pairs and show that vortex pair stability defined as ordered motion as opposed to rapid separation or recombination is the result of balance between dissipative velocities in the condensate and interaction with thermal polaritons. The addition of a trapping potential is further shown to considerably enhance the lifetime of a single vortex pair in this system.…
We show theoretically that an open-dissipative polariton condensate confined within a trapping potential and driven by an incoherent pumping scheme gives rise to bistability between odd and even modes of the potential. Switching from one state to the other can be controlled via incoherent pulsing which becomes an important step towards construction of low-powered opto-electronic devices. The origin of the effect comes from modulational instability between odd and even states of the trapping potential governed by the nonlinear polariton-polariton interactions.
We consider theoretically one-dimensional polariton ring accounting for both longitudinal-transverse (TE-TM) and Zeeman splitting of spinor polariton states and spin dependent polariton-polariton interactions. We present the novel class of solutions in the form of the localized defects rotating with constant angular velocity and analyze their properties for realistic values of the parameters of the system. We show that the effects of the geometric phase arising from the interplay between external magnetic field and TE-TM splitting introduce chirality in the system and make solitons propagating…
Formation of oblique solitons by a flow of polariton condensate past an obstacle is considered. The flow is non-uniform due to a finite life-time of polaritons what changes drastically the conditions of formation of oblique solitons compared with the atomic condensate case. The theory shows that the polariton solitons can be generated by a subsonic flow in agreement with the recent experiment [A. Amo {\it et al.}, Science, {\bf 332,} 1167 (2011)]. Geometric form of oblique solitons and other their parameters are calculated analytically and analytical results are confirmed by numerical simulati…
We study theoretically the emission of dark solitons induced by a moving defect in a nonresonantly pumped exciton-polariton condensate. The number of created dark solitons per unit of time is found to be strongly dependent on the pump power. We relate the observed dynamics of this process to the oscillations of the drag force experienced by the condensate. We investigate the stability of the polariton quantum fluid and present various types of dynamics depending on the condensate and moving obstacle parameters. Furthermore, we provide analytical expressions for dark soliton dynamics using the …
We study the dynamics of spontaneously formed vortices in homogeneous microcavity-polariton condensates (MPCs). We find that vortices are stable and appear spontaneously without stirring or rotating MPCs. The dip of the vortex core contains some background of reservoir polaritons and the visibility of a vortex is increasing with respect to the pump strength. The vortex radius is inversely proportional to the square root of the condensate density. Excitation energies of vortices at high and low pump powers are finite and zero, respectively. Vortices at low pump powers exhibit the short lifetime…
We predict the existence of novel spatially localized states of exciton-polariton Bose-Einstein condensates in semiconductor microcavities with fabricated periodic in-plane potentials. Our theory shows that, under the condition of continuous off-resonant pumping and losses associated with polariton decay, localization is observed for a wide range of optical pump parameters due to effective potentials self-induced by the polariton flows in the spatially periodic system. We reveal that the self-localization of exciton-polaritons in the lattice may occur both in the gaps and bands of the single-p…
It is now routine to make Bose-Einstein condensates of polaritons with long enough lifetime and low enough disorder to travel ballistically for hundreds of microns in quasi-one-dimensional (1D) wires. We present observations of a polariton condensate injected at one point in a quasi-1D ring, with a well-defined initial velocity and direction. A clear precession of the circular polarization is seen, which arises from an effective spin-orbit coupling term in the Hamiltonian. Our theoretical model accurately predicts the experimentally observed behavior, and shows that "zitterbewegung" behavior p…
We investigate, theoretically and numerically, the spin dynamics of a two-component exciton-polariton condensate created and sustained by non-resonant spin-polarized optical pumping of a semiconductor microcavity. Using the open-dissipative mean-field model, we show that the existence of well defined phase-locked steady states of the condensate may lead to efficient switching and control of spin (polarization) states with a non-resonant excitation. Spatially inhomogeneous pulsed excitations can cause symmetry breaking in the pseudo-spin structure of the condensate and lead to formation of non-…
We show how the transition between synchronized and desynchronized states of a spinor polariton condensate can be used to drive a transition between stationary vortex lattices and half-vortex lattices. This provides a way to control polariton spin textures by a combination of pump spot profile and applied magnetic fields. To do this, we extend the model of non-equilibrium spinor condensates to include relaxation, and study how this affects the desynchronization transition. We discuss how the pattern formation can be explained by behavior of the homogeneous system.
The self-trapping of exciton-polariton condensates is demonstrated and explained by the formation of a new polaron-like state. Above the polariton lasing threshold, local variation of the lattice temperature provides the mechanism for an attractive interaction between polaritons. Due to this attraction, the condensate collapses into a small bright spot. Its position and momentum variances approach the Heisenberg quantum limit. The self-trapping does not require either a resonant driving force or a presence of defects. The trapped state is stabilized by the phonon-assisted stimulated scattering…
We study the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless mechanism for vortex-antivortex pair formation in two-dimensional superfluids for nonequilibrium condensates. Our numerical study is based on a classical field model for driven-dissipative quantum fluids that is applicable to polariton condensates. We investigate the critical noise needed to create vortex-antivortex pairs in the systems, starting from a state with uniform phase. The dependence of the critical noise on the nonequilibrium and energy relaxation parameters is analyzed in detail.
We address stationary patterns in exciton-polariton condensates supported by a narrow external pump beam, and we discover that even in the absence of trapping potentials, such condensates may support stable localized stationary dissipative solutions (quasi-compactons), whose field decays faster than exponentially or even vanishes everywhere outside the pump spot. More general conditions lead to dissipative solitons which may display bistability. The bistability in exciton-polariton condensates, which manifests itself in simultaneous existence of two stable and one unstable localized solitons w…
We consider a condensate of exciton-polaritons in a diluted magnetic semiconductor microcavity. Such system may exhibit magnetic self-trapping in the case of sufficiently strong coupling between polaritons and magnetic ions embedded in the semiconductor. We investigate the effect of the nonequilibrium nature of exciton-polaritons on the physics of the resulting self-trapped magnetic polarons. We find that multiple polarons can exist at the same time, and derive a critical condition for self-trapping which is different to the one predicted previously in the equilibrium case. Using the Bogoliubo…
Singly quantized vortices have been already observed in many systems including the superfluid helium, Bose Einstein condensates of dilute atomic gases, and condensates of exciton polaritons in the solid state. Two dimensional superfluids carrying spin are expected to demonstrate a different type of elementary excitations referred to as half quantum vortices characterized by a pi rotation of the phase and a pi rotation of the polarization vector when circumventing the vortex core. We detect half quantum vortices in an exciton-polariton condensate by means of polarization resolved interferometry…
We report the observation of vorticity in a macroscopic Bose-Einstein condensate of polaritons in a ring geometry. Because it is a spinor condensate, the elementary excitations are "half vortices" in which there is a phase rotation of $π$ in connection with a polarization vector rotation of $π$ around a closed path. This is clearly seen in the experimental observations of the polarization rotation around the ring. In the ring geometry, a new type of half vortex is allowed in which the handedness of the spin flips from one side of the ring to the other, in addition to the rotation of the linear…
Exciton-polaritons are a coherent electron-hole-photon (e-h-p) system where condensation has been observed in semiconductor microcavities. In contrast to equilibrium Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) for long lifetime systems, polariton condensates have a dynamical nonequilibrium feature owing to the similar physical structure that they have to semiconductor lasers. One of the distinguishing features of a condensate to a laser is the presence of strong coupling between the matter and photon fields. Irrespective of its equilibrium or nonequilibrium nature, exciton-polariton have been observed to…
We report new results of Bose-Einstein condensation of polaritons in specially designed microcavities with very high quality factor, on the order of $10^6$, giving the polariton lifetimes of the order of 100 ps. When the polaritons are created with an incoherent pump, a dissipationless, coherent flow of the polaritons occurs over hundreds of microns, which increases as density increases. At high density, this flow is suddenly stopped, and the gas becomes trapped in a local potential minimum, with strong coherence.
We show that in a non-equilibrium system of an exciton-polariton condensate, where polaritons are generated from incoherent pumping, a ring-shaped pump allows for stationary vortex memory elements of topological charge $m = 1$ or $m = -1$. Using simple potential guides we can choose whether to copy the same charge or invert it onto another spatially separate ring pump. Such manipulation of binary information opens the possibility of a new type processing using vortices as topologically protected memory components.
We present a theoretical study of the quantum depletion of microcavity polaritons that are excited with a resonant laser pulse. The dynamics of the quantum fluctuations are interpreted in the context of quantum quenches in general and in terms of the dynamical Casimir effect in particular. We compute the time evolution of the first and second order correlation functions of the polariton condensate. Our theoretical modelling is based on the truncated Wigner approximation for interacting Bose gases. For homogeneous systems, analytical results are obtained in the linearised Bogoliubov approximati…
In this paper, a non-Markovian Gross-Pitaevskii equation is proposed to describe the formation of a condensate in an exciton-polariton system under incoherent pumping. By introducing spatially delta-correlated noise terms, we observe a transition from a spatially ordered phase to a disordered one as the temperature increases. In course of this process, the population of the condensate is significantly reduced. Irregularly located separate dense spots of condensate above the transition temperature are revealed. Using the Gabor transform, it is shown that, with increasing temperature, the conden…
We provide an analytical and numerical description of relaxation oscillations in the nonresonantly pumped polariton condensate. The presented considerations are based on the open dissipative Gross-Pitaevskii equation coupled to a pair of rate equations. The evolution of the condensate density can be explained qualitatively by studying the topology of the trajectory in phase space. We use a fixed points analysis for the classification of the different regimes of condensate dynamics, including fast stabilization, slow oscillations and ultrashort pulse emission. We obtain an analytical condition …
Microcavity exciton-polaritons are quantum quasi-particles arising from the strong light-matter coupling. They have exhibited rich quantum dynamics rooted from bosonic nature and inherent non-equilibrium condition. Dynamical condensation in microcavity exciton-polaritons has been observed at much elevated temperatures in comparison to ultrocold atom condensates. Recently, we have investigated the behavior of exciton-polariton condensates in artificial trap and lattice geometries in zero-dimension, one-dimension (1D) and two-dimension (2D). Coherent $π$-state with p-wave order in a 1D condensat…
We consider effective interactions in a 2D hybrid polariton- electron system and calculate dispersion of elementary excitations accounting the spin degree of freedom of the particles. Due to the crucial role played by the exchange term in polariton- electron interactions the dispersions of this system become spin- dependent and show unusual behavior. The coupling of the excitations of the condensate with 2D plasmon can result in appearence of roton minimum in the dispersion and destruction of the condensate for close enough situated quantum wells with electrons and excitons.
Polariton condensation can be regarded as a self-organization phenomenon, where phase ordering is established among particles in the system. In such condensed systems, further ordering can possibly occur in the particle density distribution, under particular experimental conditions. In this work we report on spontaneous pattern formation in a polariton condensate under non-resonant optical pumping. The slightly elliptical ring-shaped excitation laser we employ is such to force condensation to occur in a single-energy state with periodic boundary conditions, giving rise to a multi-lobe standing…
Bosonic condensates of exciton polaritons (light-matter quasiparticles in a semiconductor) provide a solid-state platform for studies of non-equilibrium quantum systems with a spontaneous macroscopic coherence. These driven, dissipative condensates typically coexist and interact with an incoherent reservoir, which undermines measurements of key parameters of the condensate. Here, we overcome this limitation by creating a high-density exciton-polariton condensate in an optically-induced "box" trap. In this so-called Thomas-Fermi regime, the condensate is fully separated from the reservoir and i…
We consider the mechanical coupling between a two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate with a graphene sheet via the vacuum fluctuations of the electromagnetic field which are at the origin of the so-called Casimir-Polder potential. By deriving a self-consistent set of equations governing the dynamics of the condensate and the flexural (out-of-plane) modes of the graphene, we can show the formation of a new type of purely acoustic quasi-particle excitation, a phonon-polariton resulting from the coherent superposition of quanta of flexural and Bogoliubov modes.
We theoretically demonstrate the generation of dark solitons trains in a one-dimensional exciton- polariton condensate within an experimentally trivial scheme. In particular we show that the fre- quency of the train can be finely tuned either electrically of fully optically to provide a stable and efficient output signal modulation. Taking the polarization degree of freedom into account we elucidate the possibility to additionally form on-demand half-solitons trains.
We study non-equilibrium microcavity-polariton condensates (MPCs) in a harmonic potential trap theoretically. We calculate and analyze the steady state, collective-excitation modes and instability of MPCs. Within excitation modes, there exist Nambu-Goldstone modes that can reveal the pattern of the spontaneous symmetry breaking of MPCs. Bifurcation of the stable and unstable modes is identified in terms of the pumping power and spot size. The unstable mechanism associated with the inward supercurrent flow is characterized by the existence of a supersonic region within the condensate.
Spin-orbit coupling (SOC) is responsible for a range of spintronic and topological processes in condensed matter. Here we show photonic analogs of SOCs in exciton-polaritons and their condensates in microcavities composed of birefringent lead halide perovskite single crystals. The presence of crystalline anisotropy coupled with splitting in the optical cavity of the transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) modes gives rise to a non-Abelian gauge field, which can be described by the Rashba-Dresselhaus Hamiltonian near the degenerate points of the two polarization modes. With increa…
We investigate the spin dynamics of half-solitons in polariton Bose-Einstein condensates. Half-solitons, which behave as magnetic monopoles, can be accelerated in the presence of the effective magnetic field of the microcavity. We study the generation of DC magnetic currents in a gas of half-solitons. At low densities, the current is suppressed due to the dipolar oscillations. At moderate densities, a magnetic current is recovered as a consequence of the collisions between the carriers. We show a deviation from Ohm's law due to the competition between magnetic dipoles and monopoles.
We present a general theory of drag on a condensate due to interactions with a moving thermal bath of non-condensate particles, adapted from previous theory of equilibration of a condensate in a trap. This theory can be used to model the polariton drag effect observed previously, in which an electric current passing through a polariton condensate gives a measurable momentum transfer to the condensate, and an effective potential energy shift.
The dynamics of propagating polariton condensates in one-dimensional microcavities is investigated through time resolved experiments. We find a strong increase in the condensate intensity when it travels through the non-resonantly excited area. This amplification is shown to come from bosonic stimulated relaxation of reservoir excitons into the polariton condensate, allowing for the repopulation of the condensate through non-resonant pumping. Thus, we experimentally demonstrate a polariton amplifier with a large band width, opening the way towards the transport of polaritons with high densitie…
Collective (elementary) excitations of quantum bosonic condensates, including condensates of exciton polaritons in semiconductor microcavities, are a sensitive probe of interparticle interactions. In anisotropic microcavities with momentum-dependent TE-TM splitting of the optical modes, the excitations dispersions are predicted to be strongly anisotropic, which is a consequence of the synthetic magnetic gauge field of the cavity, as well as the interplay between different interaction strengths for polaritons in the singlet and triplet spin configurations. Here, by directly measuring the disper…
We predict the spontaneous modulated emission from a pair of exciton-polariton condensates due to coherent (Josephson) and dissipative coupling. We show that strong polariton-polariton inter- action generates complex dynamics in the weak-lasing domain way beyond Hopf bifurcations. As a result, the exciton-polariton condensates exhibit self-induced oscillations and emit an equidistant frequency comb light spectrum. A plethora of possible emission spectra with asymmetric peak dis- tributions appears due to spontaneously broken time-reversal symmetry. The lasing dynamics is affected by the shot n…
Self-rotation occurs in an exciton-polariton condensate in a two-dimensional semiconductor microcavity pumped by a nonresonant Gaussian laser beam. A wave packet of the condensate spontaneously rotates around the center of the pumped region at a constant frequency breaking the rotation symmetry of the system. When two self-rotating condensates are created with an appropriate distance, synchronization occurs between the dynamics of the self-rotating condensates.
First order coherence measurements of a polariton condensate, reveal a regime where the condensate pseudo-spin precesses persistently within the driving optical pulse. Within a single 20 $μ$s optical pulse the condensate pseudo-spin performs over $10^5$ precessions with striking frequency stability. The condensate maintains its phase coherence even after a complete precession of the spin vector, making the observed state by a definition a spin coherent state. The emergence of the precession is traced to the polariton interactions that give rise to a self-induced out-of-plane magnetic field tha…
We introduce and analyze a novel mean-field model for polariton condensates with velocity dependence of the effective polariton mass due the photon and exciton components. The effective mass depends on the in-plane wave vector k, which at the inflection point of the lower polariton energy branch becomes infinite and above negative. The polariton condensate modes of the new mean-field theory are now sensitive to mass variations and for certain points of the energy dispersion the polariton condensate mode represents fractional quantum mechanics. The impact of the generalized kinetic energy term …
We report on pure-quantum-state polariton condensates in optical annular traps. The study of the underlying mechanism reveals that the polariton wavefunction always coalesces in a single pure-quantum-state that, counter-intuitively, is always the uppermost confined state with the highest overlap to the exciton reservoir. The tunability of such states combined with the short polariton lifetime allows for ultrafast transitions between coherent mesoscopic wavefunctions of distinctly different symmetries rendering optically confined polariton condensates a promising platform for applications such …
We investigate the effects of disorder on the propagation of one-dimensional polariton condensates in semiconductor microcavities. We observe a strong suppression of the backscattering produced by the imperfections of the structure when increasing the condensate density. This suppression occurs in the supersonic regime and is simultaneous to the onset of parametric instabilities which enable the "hopping" of the condensate through the disorder. Our results evidence a new mechanism for the frictionless flow of polaritons at high speeds.
Adopting a mean-field Gross-Pitaevskii description for a spinor polariton Bose-Einstein condensates under non-resonant pumping, we investigate the static and dynamical properties of dark-bright solitons. We derive analytically the equation of motion for the center of mass of the dark-bright soliton center, using the Hamiltonian approach. The resulting equation captures how the combination of the open-dissipative character and the spin degrees of freedom of a polariton Bose-Einstein condensate affects the properties of a dark-bright soliton, i.e. the dark-bright soliton relaxes by blending with…
We report on the realization of an out-of-equilibrium polariton condensate under pulsed excitation in a one-dimensional geometry. We observe macroscopic occupation of a polaritonic mode with only 3% photonic fraction, and a nature strikingly close to that of a bare exciton condensate. With the help of this tiny photonic fraction, the condensate is found to display first-order coherence over distances as large as 10 microns. Based on a driven-dissipative mean field model, we find that the correlations length is limited by the effects of a shallow disorder under non-equilibrium conditions.
We study theoretically the dynamical Casimir effect in an exciton-polariton condensate that is suddenly created by an ultrashort laser pulse at normal incidence. As a consequence of the abrupt change of the quantum vacuum, Bogoliubov excitations are generated. The subsequent evolution, governed by polariton interactions and losses, is studied within a linearized truncted Wigner approximation. We focus in particular on the momentum distribution and spatial coherence. The limiting behavior at large and small momenta is determined analytically. A simple scaling relation for the final condensate d…
