We report new results of Bose-Einstein condensation of polaritons in specially designed microcavities with very high quality factor, on the order of $10^6$, giving the polariton lifetimes of the order of 100 ps. When the polaritons are created with an incoherent pump, a dissipationless, coherent flow of the polaritons occurs over hundreds of microns, which increases as density increases. At high density, this flow is suddenly stopped, and the gas becomes trapped in a local potential minimum, with strong coherence.
The self-trapping of exciton-polariton condensates is demonstrated and explained by the formation of a new polaron-like state. Above the polariton lasing threshold, local variation of the lattice temperature provides the mechanism for an attractive interaction between polaritons. Due to this attraction, the condensate collapses into a small bright spot. Its position and momentum variances approach the Heisenberg quantum limit. The self-trapping does not require either a resonant driving force or a presence of defects. The trapped state is stabilized by the phonon-assisted stimulated scattering…
We consider a condensate of exciton-polaritons in a diluted magnetic semiconductor microcavity. Such system may exhibit magnetic self-trapping in the case of sufficiently strong coupling between polaritons and magnetic ions embedded in the semiconductor. We investigate the effect of the nonequilibrium nature of exciton-polaritons on the physics of the resulting self-trapped magnetic polarons. We find that multiple polarons can exist at the same time, and derive a critical condition for self-trapping which is different to the one predicted previously in the equilibrium case. Using the Bogoliubo…
Atomically-thin transition metal dichalcogenide crystals (TMDCs) hold great promise for future semiconductor optoelectronics due to their unique electronic and optical properties. In particular, electron-hole pairs (excitons) in TMDCs are stable at room temperature and interact strongly with light. When TMDCs are embedded in an optical microcavity, the excitons can hybridise with cavity photons to form exciton polaritons (polaritons herein), which display both ultrafast velocities and strong interactions. The ability to manipulate and trap polaritons on a microchip is critical for future appli…
Equilibrium Bose-Einstein condensation of exciton-polaritons, demonstrated with a long-lifetime microcavity [Phys. Rev. Lett. 118, 016602 (2017)], has proven that driven-dissipative systems can undergo thermodynamic phase transitions in the limit where the quasiparticle lifetime exceeds the thermalization time. Here, we identify the role of dimensionality and polariton interactions in determining the degree of thermalization in optically generated traps. To distinguish the effect of trapping from interactions and lifetimes, we measured the polariton distribution under four nonresonant Gaussian…
We study driven-dissipative Bose-Einstein condensates in a two-mode Josephson system, such as a double-well potential, with asymmetrical pumping. We investigate nonlinear effects on the condensate populations and mode transitions. The generalized Gross-Pitaevskii equations are modified in order to treat pumping of only a single mode. We characterize the steady-state solutions in such a system as well as criteria for potential trapping of a condensate mode. There are many possible steady-states, with different density and/or phase profiles. Transitions between different condensate modes can be …
Exciton-polaritons in semiconductor microcavities have been used to demonstrate quantum effects such as Bose-Einstein condensation, superfluity, and quantized vortices. However, in these experiments, the polaritons have not reached thermal equilibrium when they undergo the transition to a coherent state. This has prevented the verification of one of the canonical predictions for condensation, namely the phase diagram. In this work, we have created a polariton gas in a semiconductor microcavity in which the quasiparticles have a lifetime much longer than their thermalization time. This allows t…
It is now routine to make Bose-Einstein condensates of polaritons with long enough lifetime and low enough disorder to travel ballistically for hundreds of microns in quasi-one-dimensional (1D) wires. We present observations of a polariton condensate injected at one point in a quasi-1D ring, with a well-defined initial velocity and direction. A clear precession of the circular polarization is seen, which arises from an effective spin-orbit coupling term in the Hamiltonian. Our theoretical model accurately predicts the experimentally observed behavior, and shows that "zitterbewegung" behavior p…
Microcavity exciton-polaritons, known to exhibit non-equilibrium Bose condensation at high critical temperatures, can be also brought in thermal equilibrium with the surrounding medium and form a quantum degenerate Bose-Einstein distribution. It happens when their thermalization time in the regime of positive detunings -- or, alternatively, for high-finesse microcavities -- becomes shorter than their lifetime. Here we present the self-consistent finite-temperature Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov description for such a system of polaritons, universally addressing the excitation spectrum, momentum-depen…
An exciton-polariton microcavity that incorporates magnetic ions can exhibit a spontaneous self-trapping phenomenon which is an analog of the classical polaron effect. We investigate in detail the full model of a polariton condensate that includes pumping and losses, the spin degree of freedom, external magnetic field and energy relaxation. In the quasi-one-dimensional case, we show that the polaron effect can give rise to a spontaneous lattice of perfectly arranged polarization domains in an antiferromagnetic configuration. We find that partial polarization of the condensate at moderate magne…
We investigate the multistability of exciton-polariton condensates excited by a nonresonant pump. An increase in pumping power moves the system away from non-Hermitian spectral degeneracy towards spectrum splitting through an exceptional point, which induces a transition from monostability to multistability. In the region of multistability, the system contains one steady and two metastable states. The analyses of stability show that metastable states maintain a finite lifetime and eventually evolve to steady states. A steady state with multi-peak soliton different from general single-peak soli…
Exciton-polaritons are a coherent electron-hole-photon (e-h-p) system where condensation has been observed in semiconductor microcavities. In contrast to equilibrium Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) for long lifetime systems, polariton condensates have a dynamical nonequilibrium feature owing to the similar physical structure that they have to semiconductor lasers. One of the distinguishing features of a condensate to a laser is the presence of strong coupling between the matter and photon fields. Irrespective of its equilibrium or nonequilibrium nature, exciton-polariton have been observed to…
We demonstrate condensation of microcavity polaritons with a very sharp threshold occuring at two orders of magnitude lower pump intensity than previous demonstrations of condensation. The long cavity-lifetime and trapping and pumping geometries are crucial to the realization of this low threshold. Polariton condensation, or "polariton lasing" has long been proposed as a promising source of coherent light at lower threshold than traditional lasing, and these results suggest methods to bring this threshold even lower.
We provide an analytical and numerical description of relaxation oscillations in the nonresonantly pumped polariton condensate. The presented considerations are based on the open dissipative Gross-Pitaevskii equation coupled to a pair of rate equations. The evolution of the condensate density can be explained qualitatively by studying the topology of the trajectory in phase space. We use a fixed points analysis for the classification of the different regimes of condensate dynamics, including fast stabilization, slow oscillations and ultrashort pulse emission. We obtain an analytical condition …
The dynamics of coupled condensates is a wide-encompassing problem with relevance to superconductors, BECs in traps, superfluids, etc. Here, we provide a unified picture of this fundamental problem that includes i) detuning of the free energies, ii) different self-interaction strengths and iii) finite lifetime of the modes. At such, this is particularly relevant for the dynamics of polaritons, both for their internal dynamics between their light and matter constituents, as well as for the more conventional dynamics of two spatially separated condensates. Polaritons are short-lived, interact on…
We report on the trapping of single Rb atoms in tunable arrays of optical tweezers in a cryogenic environment at $\sim 4$ K. We describe the design and construction of the experimental apparatus, based on a custom-made, UHV compatible, closed-cycle cryostat with optical access. We demonstrate the trapping of single atoms in cryogenic arrays of optical tweezers, with lifetimes in excess of $\sim6000$ s, despite the fact that the vacuum system has not been baked out. These results open the way to large arrays of single atoms with extended coherence, for applications in large-scale quantum simula…
Semiconductor microcavities are often influenced by structural imperfections, which can disturb the flow and dynamics of exciton-polariton condensates. Additionally, in exciton-polariton condensates there is a variety of dynamical scenarios and instabilities, owing to the properties of the incoherent excitonic reservoir. We investigate the dynamics of an exciton-polariton condensate which emerges in semiconductor microcavity subject to disorder, which determines its spatial and temporal behaviour. Our experimental data revealed complex burst-like time evolution under non-resonant optical pulse…
We demonstrate the formation and trapping of different stationary solutions, oscillatory solutions, and rotating solutions of a polariton condensate in a planar semiconductor microcavity with a built-in ring-shaped potential well. Multistable ring shaped solutions are trapped in shallow potential wells. These solutions have the same ring shaped density distribution but different topological charges, corresponding to different orbital angular momentum (OAM) of the emitted light. For stronger confinement potentials, besides the fundamental modes, higher excited (dipole) modes can also be trapped…
Coherent bosonic ensembles offer the promise of harnessing quantum effects in photonic and quantum circuits. In the dynamic equilibrium regime, the application of polariton condensates is hindered by exciton-polariton scattering induced de-coherence in the presence of a dark exciton reservoir. By spatially separating the condensate from the reservoir, we drive the system into the weak interaction regime, where the ensemble coherence time exceeds the individual particle lifetime by nearly three orders of magnitude. The observed nanosecond coherence provides an upper limit for polariton self-int…
Integrated electro-optical switches are essential as one of the fundamental elements in the development of modern optoelectronics. As an architecture for photonic systems, exciton polaritons, that are hybrid bosonic quasiparticles that possess unique properties derived from both excitons and photons, have shown much promise. For this system, we demonstrate a significant improvement of emitted intensity and condensation threshold by applying an electric field to a microcavity filled with an organic microbelt. Our theoretical investigations indicate that the electric field makes the excitons dip…
We consider a model of the exciton-polariton condensate based on a system of two Gross-Pitaevskii equations coupled by the second-order differential operator, which represents the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in the system. Also included are the linear gain, effective diffusion, nonlinear loss, and the standard harmonic-oscillator trapping potential, as well as the Zeeman splitting. By means of combined analytical and numerical methods, we identify stable two-dimensional modes supported by the nonlinear system. In the absence of the Zeeman splitting, these are mixed modes, which combine zero and …
