To reduce the chattering and overestimation phenomena existing in classical adaptive sliding mode control, this paper presents a new class K_infinity function-based adaptive sliding mode control scheme. Two controllers are proposed in terms of concave and convex barrier functions to implement this kind of control methodology. To avoid large initial control magnitudes, two modified control schemes are provided, which extend the proposed methodology to different scenarios. It is proven that the proposed controllers yield finite-time convergence to a real sliding mode. Finally, simulations and discussions are presented to show the advantages and effectiveness of the proposed control methodology.
In this article, I introduce the notion of Fuzzy-based Higher adaptive order sliding mode observers through the example of the super-twisting adaptive order sliding mode observer. I begin by presenting the super-twisting second order sliding mode observer for systems in triangular form. Then I replace the sign functions with fuzzy inference systems in order to eliminate the chattering effect. I then show that this variant of the super-twisting second order sliding mode observer may not converge depending on the input, so I replace the square root with an adaptive power $γ$. The efficiency of t…
This paper proposes an adaptive dynamic programming-based adaptive-gain sliding mode control (ADP-ASMC) scheme for a fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) with matched and unmatched disturbances. Starting from the dynamic of fixed-wing UAV, the control-oriented model composed of attitude subsystem and airspeed subsystem is established. According to the different issues in two subsystems, two novel adaptive-gain generalized super-twisting (AGST) algorithms are developed to eliminate the effects of disturbances in two subsystems and make the system trajectories tend to the designed integral s…

This paper presents a novel adaptive fast smooth second-order sliding mode control for the attitude tracking of the three degree-of-freedom (3-DOF) helicopter system with lumped disturbances. Combining with a non-singular integral sliding mode surface, we propose a novel adaptive fast smooth second-order sliding mode control method to enable elevation and pitch angles to track given desired trajectories respectively with the features of non-singularity, adaptation to disturbances, chattering suppression and fast finite-time convergence. In addition, a novel adaptive-gain smooth second-order sl…
In adaptive sliding mode control methods, an updating gain strategy associated with finite-time convergence to the sliding set is essential to deal with matched bounded perturbations with unknown upper-bound. However, the estimation of the finite time of any adaptive design is a complicated task since it depends not only on the upper-bound of unknown perturbation but also on the size of initial conditions. This brief proposes a uniform adaptive reaching phase strategy (ARPS) within a predefined reaching-time. Moreover, as a case of study, the barrier function approach is extended for perturbed…
This paper presents a novel adaptive multivariable smooth second-order sliding mode approach with the features of fast finite-time convergence, adaptation to disturbances and smooth. This approach can be directly applied to the controller design of multi-input and multi-output (MIMO) systems. In addition, a novel adaptive multivariable smooth disturbance observer is proposed based on this structure. In terms of the types of disturbances, the fast finite-time convergence and the fast finite-time uniformly ultimately boundedness of the systems are proved with the corresponding fast finite-time L…
In this paper, formation tracking for a multi-AUV system (MAS) using an improved adaptive sliding mode control method is studied in the Three Dimensional (3-D) underwater environment. Firstly, the kinematics model and the dynamic model of the AUVs are given as the Six Dimensions of Freedom (6-DOF) considered. Then, control law based on the mathematical model of the AUVs is proposed based on the improved sliding mode method. A second order sliding mode control method is adopted to eliminate the chatting phenomenon of the controller. Thirdly, considering the water flow in the underwater working …
Shimmy is a dangerous phenomenon that occurs when aircraft's nose landing gears oscillate in a rapid and uncontrollable fashion. In this paper, we propose the use of two nonlinear control approaches (zero average control and model reference adaptive control based on minimal control synthesis) as simple yet effective strategies to suppress undesired oscillations, even in the presence of uncertainties and partial state measurements. Numerical results are presented to validate the proposed control approaches.

In this work, an intelligent controller is employed to the chaos control problem in a nonlinear pendulum. The adopted approach is based on the sliding mode control strategy and enhanced by an adaptive fuzzy algorithm to cope with modeling inaccuracies. The convergence properties of the closed-loop system are analytically proven using Lyapunov's direct method and Barbalat's lemma. Numerical results are also presented in order to demonstrate the control system performance.

In this paper, adaptive prescribed finite time stabilization of uncertain single-input and single-output nonlinear systems is considered in the presence of unknown states, unknown parameters, external load disturbance, and non-symmetric input saturation. A prescribed finite time disturbance observer is designed to approximate the unmeasured external disturbance. Also, a nonsingular prescribed finite time terminal sliding mode control is proposed for the closed-loop control of the system with the non-symmetric input saturation. Extended Kalman filter algorithm is employed for the real-time esti…
Ultrasonic motors (USMs) are commonly used in aerospace, robotics, and medical devices, where fast and precise motion is needed. Remarkably, sliding mode controller (SMC) is an effective controller to achieve precision motion control of the USMs. To improve the tracking accuracy and lower the chattering in the SMC, the fractional-order calculus is introduced in the design of an adaptive SMC in this paper, namely, adaptive fractional-order SMC (AFOSMC), in which the bound of the uncertainty existing in the USMs is estimated by a designed adaptive law. Additionally, a short memory principle is e…
The dead-zone is one of the most common hard nonlinearities in industrial actuators and its presence may drastically compromise control systems stability and performance. In this work, an adaptive variable structure controller is proposed to deal with a class of uncertain nonlinear systems subject to a non-symmetric dead-zone input. The adopted approach is primarily based on the sliding mode control methodology but enhanced by an adaptive fuzzy algorithm to compensate the dead-zone. Using Lyapunov stability theory and Barbalat's lemma, the convergence properties of the closed-loop system are a…
The aim of this paper is to propose a high performance control approach for trajectory tracking of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs). However, the controller performance can be affected by the unknown perturbations including model uncertainties and external time-varying disturbances in an undersea environment. To address this problem, a Backstepping-based Integral Sliding Mode Control with Time Delay Estimation (BS-ISMC-TDE) is designed. To improve the performance of a conventional backstepping control algorithm, an Integral Sliding Mode Control (ISMC) approach is adopted in the backsteppi…
As a model is only an abstraction of the real system, unmodeled dynamics, parameter variations, and disturbances can result in poor performance of a conventional controller based on this model. In such cases, a conventional controller cannot remain well tuned. This paper presents the control of a spherical rolling robot by using an adaptive neuro-fuzzy controller in combination with a sliding-mode control (SMC)-theory-based learning algorithm. The proposed control structure consists of a neuro-fuzzy network and a conventional controller which is used to guarantee the asymptotic stability of th…

Platoons of autonomous vehicles are being investigated as a way to increase road capacity and fuel efficiency. Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control (CACC) is one approach to controlling platoons longitudinal dynamics, which requires wireless communication between vehicles. In the present paper we use a sliding mode observer to detect and estimate cyber-attacks threatening such wireless communication. In particular we prove stability of the observer and robustness of the detection threshold in the case of event-triggered communication, following a realistic Vehicle-to-Vehicle network protocol.

Soft robots are made of compliant materials and perform tasks that are challenging for rigid robots. However, their continuum nature makes it difficult to develop model-based control strategies. This work presents a robust model-based control scheme for soft continuum robots. Our dynamic model is based on the Euler-Lagrange approach, but it uses a more accurate description of the robot's inertia and does not include oversimplified assumptions. Based on this model, we introduce an adaptive sliding mode control scheme, which is robust against model parameter uncertainties and unknown input distu…
This work proposes a quaternion-based sliding variable that describes exponentially convergent error dynamics for any forward complete desired attitude trajectory. The proposed sliding variable directly operates on the non-Euclidean space formed by quaternions and explicitly handles the double covering property to enable global attitude tracking when used in feedback. In-depth analysis of the sliding variable is provided and compared to others in the literature. Several feedback controllers including nonlinear PD, robust, and adaptive sliding control are then derived. Simulation results of a r…

When signals are measured through physical sensors, they are perturbed by noise. To reduce noise, low-pass filters are commonly employed in order to attenuate high frequency components in the incoming signal, regardless if they come from noise or the actual signal. Therefore, low-pass filters must be carefully tuned in order to avoid significant deterioration of the signal. This tuning requires prior knowledge about the signal, which is often not available in applications such as reinforcement learning or learning-based control. In order to overcome this limitation, we propose an adaptive low-…

This paper proposes an adaptive control allocation approach for uncertain over-actuated systems with actuator saturation. The proposed method does not require uncertainty estimation or a persistent excitation assumption. Using the element-wise non-symmetric projection algorithm, the adaptive parameters are restricted to satisfy certain optimality conditions leading to overall closed loop system stability. Furthermore, a sliding mode controller with a time-varying sliding surface, working in tandem with the adaptive control allocation, is proposed to guarantee the outer loop stability and refer…
