In this article, I introduce the notion of Fuzzy-based Higher adaptive order sliding mode observers through the example of the super-twisting adaptive order sliding mode observer. I begin by presenting the super-twisting second order sliding mode observer for systems in triangular form. Then I replace the sign functions with fuzzy inference systems in order to eliminate the chattering effect. I then show that this variant of the super-twisting second order sliding mode observer may not converge depending on the input, so I replace the square root with an adaptive power $γ$. The efficiency of the proposed method is illustrated by simulations made on MATLAB/Simulink.

In this work, an intelligent controller is employed to the chaos control problem in a nonlinear pendulum. The adopted approach is based on the sliding mode control strategy and enhanced by an adaptive fuzzy algorithm to cope with modeling inaccuracies. The convergence properties of the closed-loop system are analytically proven using Lyapunov's direct method and Barbalat's lemma. Numerical results are also presented in order to demonstrate the control system performance.
Platoons of autonomous vehicles are being investigated as a way to increase road capacity and fuel efficiency. Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control (CACC) is one approach to controlling platoons longitudinal dynamics, which requires wireless communication between vehicles. In the present paper we use a sliding mode observer to detect and estimate cyber-attacks threatening such wireless communication. In particular we prove stability of the observer and robustness of the detection threshold in the case of event-triggered communication, following a realistic Vehicle-to-Vehicle network protocol.
In various applications in the field of control engineering the estimation of the state variables of dynamic systems in the presence of unknown inputs plays an important role. Existing methods require the so-called observer matching condition to be satisfied, rely on the boundedness of the state variables or exhibit an increased observer order of twice the plant order. In this article, a novel observer normal form for strongly observable linear time-invariant multivariable systems is proposed. In contrast to classical normal forms, the proposed approach also takes the unknown inputs into accou…
The dead-zone is one of the most common hard nonlinearities in industrial actuators and its presence may drastically compromise control systems stability and performance. In this work, an adaptive variable structure controller is proposed to deal with a class of uncertain nonlinear systems subject to a non-symmetric dead-zone input. The adopted approach is primarily based on the sliding mode control methodology but enhanced by an adaptive fuzzy algorithm to compensate the dead-zone. Using Lyapunov stability theory and Barbalat's lemma, the convergence properties of the closed-loop system are a…
As a model is only an abstraction of the real system, unmodeled dynamics, parameter variations, and disturbances can result in poor performance of a conventional controller based on this model. In such cases, a conventional controller cannot remain well tuned. This paper presents the control of a spherical rolling robot by using an adaptive neuro-fuzzy controller in combination with a sliding-mode control (SMC)-theory-based learning algorithm. The proposed control structure consists of a neuro-fuzzy network and a conventional controller which is used to guarantee the asymptotic stability of th…
Platoons of autonomous vehicles are being investigated as a way to increase road capacity and fuel efficiency. Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control (CACC) is an approach to achieve such platoons, in which vehicles collaborate using wireless communication. While this collaboration improves performance, it also makes the vehicles vulnerable to cyber-attacks. In this paper the performance of a sliding mode observer (SMO) based approach to cyber-attack detection is analysed, considering simultaneous attacks on the communication and local sensors. To this end, the considered cyber-attacks are divide…
In this paper, adaptive prescribed finite time stabilization of uncertain single-input and single-output nonlinear systems is considered in the presence of unknown states, unknown parameters, external load disturbance, and non-symmetric input saturation. A prescribed finite time disturbance observer is designed to approximate the unmeasured external disturbance. Also, a nonsingular prescribed finite time terminal sliding mode control is proposed for the closed-loop control of the system with the non-symmetric input saturation. Extended Kalman filter algorithm is employed for the real-time esti…

Chattering phenomena is the major problem affecting sliding mode control (SMC). Also, finding a suitable structure and appropriate parameters values of fuzzy logic system (FLS) is a complex and difficult task. In addition, the stability of a general FLS is difficult to guarantee. Many types of combinations between FLS and SMC have been used to form an intelligent and robust controller that deviates from the limitations of each constituent and benefit from the advantages of each constituent. In this study, a survey of recent developments on the Hybridization of FLS (type-1) and SMC is presented…

This paper proposes a novel observer-based disturbance estimation method for high degree-of-freedom Euler-Lagrangian systems using an unknown input-output (UIO) sliding mode observer (SMO). Different from the previous SMO methods, this approach does not assume the matching condition of the disturbances. Besides, compared to the conventional disturbance estimation methods, the proposed method does not require the calculation of the inverse inertia matrices and accurate measurement of system velocities. This advantage resolves the concerns of heavy computational load and amplified noise for prac…
A cyber-physical system (CPS) is a tight coupling of computational resources, network communication, and physical processes. They are composed of a set of networked components, including sensors, actuators, control processing units, and communication agents that instrument the physical world to make smarter. However, cyber components are also the source of new, unprecedented vulnerabilities to malicious attacks. In order to protect a CPS from attacks, three security levels of protection, detection, and identification are considered. In this chapter, we will discuss the identification level, i.…
This paper presents a novel Sliding Mode Control (SMC) algorithm to handle mismatched uncertainties in systems via a novel Self-Learning Disturbance Observer (SLDO). A computationally efficient SLDO is developed within a framework of feedback-error learning scheme in which a conventional estimation law and a Neuro-Fuzzy Structure (NFS) work in parallel. In this framework, the NFS estimates the mismatched disturbances and becomes the leading disturbance estimator while the former feeds the learning error to the NFS to learn system behavior. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed S…
This work investigates the real-time estimation of the state-of-charge (SoC) of Lithium-ion (Li-ion) cells for reliable, safe and efficient utilization. A novel attractive ellipsoid based sliding-mode observer (AESMO) algorithm is designed to estimate the SoC in real-time. The algorithm utilizes standard equivalent circuit model of a Li-ion cell and provides reliable and efficient SoC estimate in the presence of bounded uncertainties in the battery parameters as well as exogenous disturbances. The theoretical framework of the observer design is not limited to the SoC estimation problem of Li-i…

In order to achieve faster and more robust convergence (especially under noisy working environments), a sliding mode theory-based learning algorithm has been proposed to tune both the premise and consequent parts of type-2 fuzzy neural networks in this paper. Differently from recent studies, where sliding mode control theory-based rules are proposed for only the consequent part of the network, the developed algorithm applies fully sliding mode parameter update rules for both the premise and consequent parts of the type-2 fuzzy neural networks. In addition, the responsible parameter for sharing…

Combining with a non-singular integral sliding mode surface, we propose a novel adaptive fast smooth second-order sliding mode control method to enable elevation and pitch angles to track given desired trajectories respectively with the features of non-singularity, adaptation to disturbances, chattering suppression and fast finite-time convergence. In addition, a novel adaptive-gain smooth second-order sl…
This paper deals with the design of robust tracking and model following (RTMF) controller for linear time-invariant (LTI) systems with uncertainties. The controller is based on the second order sliding mode (SOSM) algorithm (super twisting) which is the most effective and popular in the family of higher order sliding modes (HOSM). The use of super twisting algorithm (STA) eliminates the chattering problem encountered in traditional sliding mode control while retaining its robustness properties. The proposed robust tracking controller can guarantee the asymptotic stability of tracking error in …

This approach can be directly applied to the controller design of multi-input and multi-output (MIMO) systems. In addition, a novel adaptive multivariable smooth disturbance observer is proposed based on this structure. In terms of the types of disturbances, the fast finite-time convergence and the fast finite-time uniformly ultimately boundedness of the systems are proved with the corresponding fast finite-time L…
With the development of the space missions, there are extensive missions in the demand of the prescribed time convergence. However, it is still a difficult work to combine the prescribed time method with the sliding mode control due to the infinite gain of the prescribed time method while approaching the prescribed time and two periods of sliding mode control. In this paper, a new prescribed time sliding mode control method is proposed for general systems with matched disturbances, from the second-order system to the high-order system. A novel sliding mode variable with explicit time term is d…
In this contribution, an intelligent controller is proposed for an underactuated overhead container crane subject to both parameter uncertainties and unmodeled dynamics. The adopted approach is based on the sliding mode method to confer robustness against modeling inaccuracies and external disturbances. Additionally, an adaptive fuzzy inference system is embedded within the control law to improve set-point regulation and trajectory tracking. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed intelligent scheme, the control law was implemented and tested in a 1:6 scale experimental container …

This paper addresses to Sliding Mode Learning Control (SMLC) of uncertain nonlinear systems with Lyapunov stability analysis. In the control scheme, a conventional control term is used to provide the system stability in compact space while a Type-2 Neuro-Fuzzy Controller (T2NFC) learns system behavior so that the T2NFC takes the overall control of the system completely in a very short time period. The stability of the sliding mode learning algorithm was proven in literature; however, it is so restrictive for systems without the overall system stability. To address this shortcoming, a novel con…

ASMO is used to estimate the Rotor Speed, Rotor Resistance, Flux, Stator and Rotor currents and the developed electromagnetic Torques. To improve the robustness and accuracy of an adaptive SMO during very low frequency operation, the sliding mode flux observer(SMFO) uses independent gains as the correction terms. The gains of current and rotor flux SMOs are designed using Lyapunov stability theory to guarantee the stability and fast convergen…

The expectation of unmanned air vehicles (UAVs) pushes the operation environment to narrow spaces, where the systems may fly very close to an object and perform an interaction. This phase brings the variation in UAV dynamics: thrust and drag coefficient of the propellers might change under different proximity. At the same time, UAVs may need to operate under external disturbances to follow time-based trajectories. Under these challenging conditions, a standard controller approach may not handle all missions with a fixed structure, where there may be a need to adjust its parameters for each dif…

In this paper concurrent learning (CL)-based full and reduced order observers for a perspective dynamical system (PDS) are developed. The PDS is a widely used model for estimating the depth of a feature point from a sequence of camera images. Building on the current progress of CL for parameter estimation in adaptive control, a state observer is developed for the PDS model where the inverse depth appears as a time-varying parameter in the dynamics. The data recorded over a sliding time window in the near past is used in the CL term to design the full and the reduced order state observers. A Ly…

In recent decades, one of the scientists' main concerns has been to improve the accuracy of satellite attitude, regardless of the expense. The obvious result is that a large number of control strategies have been used to address this problem. In this study, an adaptive neuro-fuzzy integrated (ANFIS) satellite attitude estimation and control system was developed. The controller is trained with the data provided by an optimal controller. A pulse modulator is used to generate the right ON/OFF commands of the thruster actuator. To evaluate the performance of the AN-FIS controller in closed-loop si…
This study proposes a new distributed control method based on an adaptive fuzzy control for multiple collaborative autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) to track a desired formation shape within a fixed time. First, a formation control protocol based on a fixed-time backstepping sliding mode control is designed, in which the consensus cooperative tracking errors for each AUV will be formulated. Then, to compensate for the saturated control torques, an adaptive auxiliary variable is introduced. Finally, a fixed-time adaptive fuzzy logic control (FLC) is derived to approximate the unknown dynami…
This paper presents three types of sliding mode controllers for a magnetic levitation system. First, a proportional-integral sliding mode controller (PI-SMC) is designed using a new switching surface and a proportional plus power rate reaching law. The PI-SMC is more robust than a feedback linearization controller in the presence of mismatched uncertainties and outperforms the SMC schemes reported recently in the literature in terms of the convergence rate and settling time. Next, to reduce the chattering phenomenon in the PI-SMC, a state feedback-based discrete-time SMC algorithm is developed…
