We perform a fast-reaction limit for a linear reaction-diffusion system consisting of two diffusion equations coupled by a linear reaction. We understand the linear reaction-diffusion system as a gradient flow of the free energy in the space of probability measure equipped with a geometric structure, which contains the Wasserstein metric for the diffusion part and cosh-type functions for the reaction part. The fast-reaction limit is done on the level of the gradient structure by proving EDP-convergence with tilting. The limit gradient system induces a diffusion system with Lagrange multipliers on the linear slow-manifold. Moreover, the limit gradient system can be equivalently described by a coarse-grained gradient system, which induces a diffusion equation with a mixed diffusion constant for the coarse-grained slow variable.
We consider nonlinear reaction systems satisfying mass-action kinetics with slow and fast reactions. It is known that the fast-reaction-rate limit can be described by an ODE with Lagrange multipliers and a set of nonlinear constraints that ask the fast reactions to be in equilibrium. Our aim is to study the limiting gradient structure which is available if the reaction system satisfies the detailed-balance condition. The gradient structure on the set of concentration vectors is given in terms of the relative Boltzmann entropy and a cosh-type dissipation potential. We show that a limiting or ef…
A spatio-temporal evolution of chemicals appearing in a reversible enzyme reaction and modelled by a four component reaction-diffusion system with the reaction terms obtained by the law of mass action is considered. The large time behaviour of the system is studied by means of entropy methods.

The mass-based Maxwell-Stefan approach to one-phase multicomponent reactive mixtures is mathematically analyzed. It is shown that the resulting quasilinear, strongly coupled reaction-diffusion system is locally well-posed in an $L_p$-setting and generates a local semiflow on its natural state space. Solutions regularize instantly and become strictly positive if their initial components are all nonnegative and nontrivial. For a class of reversible mass-action kinetics, the positive equilibria are identified: these are precisely the constant chemical equilibria of the system, which may form a ma…
In this paper, the applicability of the entropy method for the trend towards equilibrium for reaction-diffusion systems arising from first order chemical reaction networks is studied. In particular, we present a suitable entropy structure for weakly reversible reaction networks without detail balance condition. We show by deriving an entropy-entropy dissipation estimate that for any weakly reversible network each solution trajectory converges exponentially fast to the unique positive equilibrium with computable rates. This convergence is shown to be true even in cases when the diffusion coeffi…
Most of the previous studies on the well-known Gray-Scott model view it as an irreversible chemical reaction system. In this paper, we derive a four-species reaction-diffusion system using the energetic variational approach based on the law of mass action. This is a reversible Gray-Scott type model, which has a natural entropy structure. We establish the local well-posedness of this system, and justify the limit to the corresponding irreversible Gray-Scott type system as some backward coefficients tend to zero. Furthermore, under some smallness assumption on the initial data, we obtain the glo…
The convergence to equilibrium of mass action reaction-diffusion systems arising from networks of chemical reactions is studied. The considered reaction networks are assumed to satisfy the detailed balance condition and have no boundary equilibria. We propose a general approach based on the so-called entropy method, which is able to quantify with explicitly computable rates the decay of an entropy functional in terms of an entropy entropy-dissipation inequality based on the totality of the conservation laws of the system. As a consequence follows convergence to the unique detailed balance equi…
In this paper, we use duality arguments "à la Michel Pierre" to establish global existence of classic solutions for a class of parabolic reaction-diffusion systems modeling, for instance, the evolution of reversible chemical reactions.
We establish a weak-strong uniqueness principle for solutions to entropy-dissipating reaction-diffusion equations: As long as a strong solution to the reaction-diffusion equation exists, any weak solution and even any renormalized solution must coincide with this strong solution. Our assumptions on the reaction rates are just the entropy condition and local Lipschitz continuity; in particular, we do not impose any growth restrictions on the reaction rates. Therefore, our result applies to any single reversible reaction with mass-action kinetics as well as to systems of reversible reactions wit…
We consider a model system consisting of two reaction-diffusion equations, where one species diffuses in a volume while the other species diffuses on the surface which surrounds the volume. The two equations are coupled via a nonlinear reversible Robin-type boundary condition for the volume species and a matching reversible source term for the boundary species. As a consequence of the coupling, the total mass of the two species is conserved. The considered system is motivated for instance by models for asymmetric stem cell division. Firstly we prove the existence of a unique weak solution via …
In this paper we study the local instability to the boundary equilibria and the local stability to the positive equilibria for some chemical reaction-diffusion systems. We first analyze a three-species system with boundary equilibria in some stoichiometric classes. Then We prove the convergence to the positive equilibria for a general reversible reaction-diffusion network as long as the initial data is closed enough to the the positive equilibria.
We consider a system of two reaction-diffusion equations coming out of reversible chemistry. When the reaction happens on the totality of the domain, it is known that exponential convergence to equilibrium holds. We show in this paper that this exponential convergence also holds when the reaction holds only on a given open set of a ball, thanks to an observation estimate deduced by logarithmic convexity.
In this paper, we introduce a notion of generalized potential games that is inspired by a newly developed theory on generalized gradient flows. More precisely, a game is called generalized potential if the simultaneous gradient of the loss functions is a nonlinear function of the gradient of a potential function. Applications include a class of games arising from chemical reaction networks with detailed balance condition. For this class of games, we prove an explicit exponential convergence to equilibrium for evolution of a single reversible reaction. Moreover, numerical investigations are per…
We present a refined duality estimate for parabolic equations. This estimate entails new results for systems of reaction-diffusion equations, including smoothness and exponential convergence towards equilibrium for equations with quadratic right-hand sides in two dimensions. For general systems in any space dimension, we obtain smooth solutions of reaction-diffusion systems coming out of reversible chemistry under an assumption that the diffusion coefficients are sufficiently close one to another.
In this paper we study the rate of convergence to the complex balanced equilibrium for some chemical reaction-diffusion systems with boundary equilibria. We first analyze a three-species system with boundary equilibria in some stoichiometric classes, and whose right hand side is bounded above by a quadratic nonlinearity in the positive orthant. We prove similar results on the convergence to the positive equilibrium for a fairly general two-species reversible reaction-diffusion network with boundary equilibria.
In this work we study global well-posedness and large time behaviour for a typical reaction--diffusion system, which include degenerate diffusion, and whose non-linearities arise from chemical reactions. We show that there is an {\it indirect diffusion effect}, i.e. an effective diffusion for the non-diffusive species which is incurred by a combination of diffusion from diffusive species and reversible reactions between the species. Deriving new estimates for such degenerate reaction-diffusion system, we show, by applying the entropy method, that the solution converges exponentially to equilib…
The global-in-time existence of renormalized solutions to reaction-cross-diffu-sion systems for an arbitrary number of variables in bounded domains with no-flux boundary conditions is proved. The cross-diffusion part describes the segregation of population species and is a generalization of the Shigesada-Kawasaki-Teramoto model. The diffusion matrix is not diagonal and generally neither symmetric nor positive semi-definite, but the system possesses a formal gradient-flow or entropy structure. The reaction part includes reversible reactions of mass-action kinetics and does not obey any growth c…
We consider a system of reaction-diffusion equations describing the reversible reaction of two species $\mathcal{U}, \mathcal{V}$ forming a third species $\mathcal{W}$ and vice versa according to mass action law kinetics with arbitrary stochiometric coefficients (equal or larger than one). Firstly, we prove existence of global classical solutions via improved duality estimates under the assumption that one of the diffusion coefficients of $\mathcal{U}$ or $\mathcal{V}$ is sufficiently close to the diffusion coefficient of $\mathcal{W}$. Secondly, we derive an entropy entropy-dissipation estima…
The Michaelis-Menten mechanism is probably the best known model for an enzyme-catalyzed reaction. For spatially homogeneous concentrations, QSS reductions are well known, but this is not the case when chemical species are allowed to diffuse. We will discuss QSS reductions for both the irreversible and reversible Michaelis-Menten reaction in the latter case, given small initial enzyme concentration and slow diffusion. Our work is based on a heuristic method to obtain an ordinary differential equation which admits reduction by Tikhonov-Fenichel theory. We will not give convergence proofs but we …
This paper considers quadratic and super-quadratic reaction-diffusion systems for reversible chemistry, for which all species satisfy uniform-in-time $L^1$ a-priori estimates, for instance, as a consequence of suitable mass conservation laws. A new result on the global existence of classical solutions is proved in three and higher space dimensions by combining regularity and interpolation arguments in Bochner spaces, a bootstrap scheme and a weak comparison argument. Moreover, provided that the considered system allows for entropy entropy-dissipation estimates proving exponential convergence t…
H{ö}lder regularity of parabolic equations with Dirichlet boundary conditions and application to reaction-diffusion and reaction-cross-diffusion systems
The long time behavior of a model for a first order, weakly reversible chemical reaction network is considered, where the movement of the reacting species is described by kinetic transport. The reactions are triggered by collisions with a nonmoving background with constant temperature, determining the post-reactional equilibrium velocity distributions. Species with different particle masses are considered, with a strong separation between two groups of light and heavy particles. As an approximation, the heavy species are modeled as nonmoving. Under the assumption of at least one moving species…
We study the boundedness and convergence to equilibrium of weak solutions to reaction-diffusion systems with nonlinear diffusion. The nonlinear diffusion is of porous medium type and the nonlinear reaction terms are assumed to grow polynomially and to dissipate (or conserve) the total mass. By utilising duality estimates, the dissipation of the total mass and the smoothing effect of the porous medium equation, we prove that if the exponents of the nonlinear diffusion terms are high enough, then weak solutions are bounded, locally Hölder continuous and their $L^{\infty}(Ω)$-norm grows in time a…
