On the open Toda chain with external forcing

We consider the open Toda chain with external forcing, and in the case when the forcing stretches the system, we derive the longtime behavior of solutions of the chain. Using an observation of Jürgen Moser, we then show that the system is completely integrable, in the sense that the $2N$-dimensional system has $N$ functionally independent Poisson commuting integrals, and also has a Lax-Pair formulation. In addition, we construct action-angle variables for the flow. In the case when the forcing compresses the system, the analysis of the flow remains open.

Frequency locking by external forcing in systems with rotational symmetry

We study locking of the modulation frequency of a relative periodic orbit in a general $S^1$-equivariant system of ordinary differential equations under an external forcing of modulated wave type. Response solutions for wave equations with variable wave speed and periodic forcing

We consider a model of nonlinear wave equations with periodically varying wave speed and periodic external forcing. By imposing non-resonance conditions on the frequency, we establish the existence of the response solutions (i.e., periodic solutions with the same frequency as the forcing) for such a model in a Cantor set of asymptotically full measure. The proof relies on a Lyapunov--Schmidt reduction together with the Nash--Moser iteration.

Models of population dynamics under the influence of external perturbations: mathematical results

In this Note, we describe the stationary equilibria and the asymptotic behaviour of an heterogeneous logistic reaction-diffusion equation under the influence of autonomous or time-periodic forcing terms. We show that the study of the asymptotic behaviour in the time-periodic forcing case can be reduced to the autonomous one, the last one being described in function of the "size" of the external perturbation. Our results can be interpreted in terms of maximal sustainable yields from populations. We briefly discuss this last aspect through a numerical computation.

On the effect of forcing of fold bifurcations and early-warning signals in population dynamics

The classical fold bifurcation is a paradigmatic example of a critical transition. It has been used in a variety of contexts, including in particular ecology and climate science, to motivate the role of slow recovery rates and increased autocorrelations as early-warning signals of such transitions. Mathematical formulation of a dynamical system with dry friction subjected to external forces

On population resilience to external perturbations

We study a spatially explicit harvesting model in periodic or bounded environments. The model is governed by a parabolic equation with a spatially dependent nonlinearity of Kolmogorov--Petrovsky--Piskunov type, and a negative external forcing term $-δ$. Stochastic Stabilization of Transient Axisymmetric Taylor-Couette Flow

Structured on the paradigmatic Navier-Stokes flow model, we study a stochastically forced Taylor-Couette system in the narrow gap limit, in order to analyze the simultaneous impact of a non-conserved (Gaussian) force and a nonlinear perturbation, in determining linear stability.
