A coarse graining technique akin to block spin transformations that groups together fiducial cells in a homogeneous and isotropic universe has been recently developed in the context of loop quantum cosmology. The key technical ingredient was an SU(1, 1) group and Lie algebra structure of the physical observables as well as the use of Perelomov coherent states for SU(1, 1). It was shown that the coarse graining operation is completely captured by changing group representations. Based on this result, it was subsequently shown that one can extract an explicit renormalisation group flow of the loop quantum cosmology Hamiltonian operator in a simple model with dust-clock. In this paper, we continue this line of investigation and derive a coherent state path integral formulation of this quantum theory and extract an explicit expression for the renormalisation-scale dependent classical Hamiltonian entering the path integral for a coarse grained description at that scale. We find corrections to the non-renormalised Hamiltonian that are qualitatively similar to those previously investigated via canonical quantisation. In particular, they are again most sensitive to small quantum numbers, showing that the large quantum number (spin) description captured by so called "effective equations" in loop quantum cosmology does not reproduce the physics of many small quantum numbers (spins). Our results have direct impact on path integral quantisation in loop quantum gravity, showing that the usually taken large spin limit should be expected not to capture (without renormalisation, as mostly done) the physics of many small spins that is usually assumed to be present in physically reasonable quantum states.
The causal set approach to the problem of quantum gravity is based on the hypothesis that spacetime is fundamentally discrete. Spacetime discreteness opens the door to novel types of dynamical law for cosmology and the Classical Sequential Growth (CSG) models of Rideout and Sorkin form an interesting class of such laws. It has been shown that a renormalisation of the dynamical parameters of a CSG model occurs whenever the universe undergoes a Big Crunch-Big Bang bounce. In this paper we propose a way to model the creation of a new universe after the singularity of a black hole. We show that re…
We study quantum modifications to cosmology in a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universe with and without scalar fields by taking the renormalisation group running of gravitational and matter couplings into account. We exploit the Bianchi identity to relate the renormalisation group scale with scale factor and derive the improved cosmological evolution equations. We find two types of cosmological fixed points where the renormalisation group scale either freezes in, or continues to evolve with scale factor. We discuss the implications of each of these, and classify the different cosmological fixed …
I discuss the renormalisation group approach to gravity, its link to Steven Weinberg's asymptotic safety scenario, and give an overview of results with applications to particle physics and cosmology.
A geometric formulation of Wilson's exact renormalisation group is presented based on a gauge invariant ultraviolet regularisation scheme without the introduction of a background field. This allows for a manifestly background independent approach to quantum gravity and gauge theories in the continuum. The regularisation is a geometric variant of Slavnov's scheme consisting of a modified action, which suppresses high momentum modes, supplemented by Pauli-Villars determinants in the path integral measure. An exact renormalisation group flow equation for the Wilsonian effective action is derived …
We study quantum corrections to Friedmann-Robertson-Walker cosmology with a scalar field under the assumption that the dynamics are subject to renormalisation group improvement. We use the Bianchi identity to relate the renormalisation group scale to the scale factor and obtain the improved cosmological evolution equations. We study the solutions of these equations in the renormalisation group fixed point regime, obtaining the time-dependence of the scalar field strength and the Hubble parameter in specific models with monomial and trinomial quartic scalar field potentials. We find that power-…
Coherent state functional integrals for the minisuperspace models of quantum cosmology are studied. By the well-established canonical theories, the transition amplitudes in the path-integral representations of Wheeler-DeWitt quantum cosmology and loop quantum cosmology can be formulated through group averaging. The effective action and Hamiltonian with higher-order quantum corrections are thus obtained in both models. It turns out that for a non-symmetric Hamiltonian constraint operator, the Moyal (star)-product emerges naturally in the effective Hamiltonian. This reveals the intrinsic relatio…
We follow the Feynman procedure to obtain a path integral formulation of loop quantum cosmology starting from the Hilbert space framework. Quantum geometry effects modify the weight associated with each path so that the effective measure on the space of paths is different from that used in the Wheeler-DeWitt theory. These differences introduce some conceptual subtleties in arriving at the WKB approximation. But the approximation is well defined and provides intuition for the differences between loop quantum cosmology and the Wheeler-DeWitt theory from a path integral perspective.
We show that the Duru-Kleinert fixed energy amplitude leads to the path integral for the propagation amplitude in the closed FRW quantum cosmology with scale factor as one degree of freedom. Then, using the Duru-Kleinert equivalence of corresponding actions, we calculate the tunneling rate, with exact prefactor, through the dilute-instanton approximation to first order in \hbar.
A path integral formulation of the Bianchi I models containing a massless scalar field in loop quantum cosmology is constructed. Following the strategy used in the homogenous and isotropic case, the calculation is extended to the simplest non-isotropic models according to the $\barμ$ and $\barμ^{\prime}$ scheme. It is proved from the path integral angle that the quantum dynamic lacks the full invariance with respect to fiducial cell scaling in the $\barμ$ scheme, but it does not in the $\barμ^{\prime}$ scheme. The investigation affirms the equivalence of the canonical approach and the path int…
In this contribution we sketch a branch-cut quantum formulation of the Wheeler-DeWitt equation analytically continued to the complex plane. As a starting point, we base our approach on the Hořava-Lifshitz formulation of gravity, which employs higher spatial-derivative terms of the spacetime curvature for renormalisation reasons. Following standard procedures, the quantization of the Lagrangian density is achieved by raising the Hamiltonian, the dynamical variable which represents the branch-cut complex scale factor and the conjugate momentum to the category of operators. We arrive at an Schröd…
A possible avenue towards a non-perturbative Quantum Field Theory (QFT) on Minkowski space is the constructive approach which employs the Euclidian path integral formulation, in the presence of both ultraviolet (UV) and infrared (IR) regulators, as starting point. The UV regulator is to be taken away by renormalisation group techniques which in case of success leads to a measure on the space of generalised Euclidian fields in finite volume. The IR regulator corresponds to the thermodynamic limit of the system in the statistical physics sense. If the resulting measure obeys the Osterwalder-Schr…
We study the path integral formulation of Friedmann universe filled with a massless scalar field in loop quantum cosmology. All the isotropic models of $k=0,+1,-1$ are considered. To construct the path integrals in the timeless framework, a multiple group-averaging approach is proposed. Meanwhile, since the transition amplitude in the deparameterized framework can be expressed in terms of group-averaging, the path integrals can be formulated for both deparameterized and timeless frameworks. Their relation is clarified. It turns out that the effective Hamiltonian derived from the path integral …
In the companion paper we motivated a renormalisation flow on Osterwalder-Schrader data (OS-data) consisting of 1. a Hilbert space, 2. a cyclic vacuum and 3. a Hamiltonian annihilating that vacuum. As the name suggests, the motivation was via the OS reconstruction theorem which allows to reconstruct the OS data from an OS measure satisfying (a subset of) the OS axioms, in particular reflection positivity. The guiding principle was to map the usual Wilsonian path integral renormalisation flow onto a flow of the corresponding OS data. We showed that this induced flow on the OS data has an unwant…
The alternative dynamics of loop quantum cosmology is examined by the path integral formulation. We consider the spatially flat FRW models with a massless scalar field, where the alternative quantization inherit more features from full loop quantum gravity. The path integrals can be formulated in both timeless and deparameterized frameworks. It turns out that the effective Hamiltonians derived from the two different viewpoints are equivalent to each other. Moreover, the first-order modified Friedmann equations are derived and predict quantum bounces for contracting universe, which coincide wit…
An approach to quantum cosmology, relying on strengths of both canonical and path integral formalisms, is applied to the cosmological model, Bianchi type IX. Physical quantum states are constructed on the maximal slice of the cosmological history. A path integral is derived which evolves observables off the maximal slice. This result is compared a path integral propagator derived earlier with conventional Faddeev-Poppov gauge fixing.
We derive new functional renormalisation group flows for quantum gravity, in any dimension. The key new achievement is that the equations apply for any theory of gravity whose underlying Lagrangian $\sim f(R_{μνρσ})$ is a function of the Riemann tensor and the inverse metric. The results centrally exploit the benefits of maximally symmetric spaces for the evaluation of operator traces. The framework is highly versatile and offers a wide range of new applications to study quantum gravitational effects in extensions of Einstein gravity, many of which have hitherto been out of reach. The phase di…
Coherent state functional integral for the minisuperspace model of loop quantum cosmology is studied. By the well-established canonical theory, the transition amplitude in the path integral representation of loop quantum cosmology with alternative dynamics can be formulated through group averaging. The effective action and Hamiltonian with higher-order quantum corrections are thus obtained. It turns out that for a non-symmetric Hamiltonian constraint operator, the Moyal (star)-product emerges naturally in the effective Hamiltonian. For the corresponding symmetric Hamiltonian operator, the resu…
Quantum Cosmology and Gravity are formulated here as the primary and secondary quantizations of the energy constraints by analogy with the historical formulation of quantum field theory. New fact is that both the Universe and its matter are created from stable vacuum obtained by the Bogoliubov-type transformation just as it is in the theory of quantum superfluid liquid. Such the Quantum Gravity gives us possibility to explain topical problems of cosmology by the cosmological creation of universes and particles from vacuum.
We study quantum gravity corrections to early universe cosmology as resulting within the asymptotic safety scenario. We analyse if it is possible to obtain accelerated expansion in the regime of the renormalisation group fixed point in a theory with Einstein-Hilbert gravity and a scalar field. We show how this phase impacts cosmological perturbations observed in the cosmic microwave background.
A review of the path integral approach to quantum cosmology and its relation to canonical quantisation. The initial derivation of the Hartle-Hawking and Vilenkin wavefunctions from the Euclidean Einstein-Hilbert action, and later, from the Lorentzian path integral using Picard-Lefshets Theory is discussed. Path integral quantisation of the Einstein-Cartan action is then employed to obtain the wavefunctions for minisuperspace closed FRW universes dominated by matter and radiation. These calculations are complimentary to those recently carried out by Magueijo using canonical quantisation of the …
The path-integral approach to cosmology consists in the computation of transition amplitudes between states of the quantum geometry of the universe. In the past, the concrete computation of these transitions amplitudes has been performed in a perturbative regime, breaking the full general covariance of the theory. Here I present how it is possible to define a general covariant path integral in quantum cosmology, by relying on the most recent results of the canonical and covariant formulations of Loop Quantum Gravity. I present two strategies that have been implemented. The first starts from th…
In the context of metric f(R) gravity, we consider a FLRW space-time, filled with a perfect fluid described by a barotropic equation of state (p = γρ). We give the equivalent mini-superspace description and use the reparametrization invariance of the resulting Lagrangian to work in the equivalent constant potential description. At that point, we restrict our analysis to those models for which the ensuing scaled mini-superspace is maximally symmetric. Those models exhibit the maximum number of autonomous integrals of motion linear in the momenta, which are constructed by the Killing vectors of …
We present an analytic computation of an explicit renormalisation group flow for cosmological states in loop quantum gravity. A key ingredient in our analysis are Perelomov coherent states for the Lie group SU(1,1) whose representation spaces are embedded into the standard loop quantum cosmology (LQC) Hilbert space. The SU(1,1) group structure enters our analysis by considering a classical set of phase space functions that generates the Lie algebra su(1,1). We implement this Poisson algebra as operators on the LQC Hilbert space in a non-anomalous way. This task requires a rather involved order…
The work presents the frst and the second degree Darboux polynomials, Jacobi's last multipliers as well as the set of frst integrals for Brans-Dicke cosmology. Algebraic invariant sets are constructed. First integrals are visualized for some particular values of the $ω$ parameter.
In this talk we discuss the quantisation of a class of string cosmology models characterised by scale factor duality invariance. The amplitudes for the full set of classically allowed and forbidden transitions are computed by applying the reduced phase space and path integral methods. In particular, the path integral calculation clarifies the meaning of the instanton-like behaviour of the transition amplitudes that has been first pointed out in previous investigations.
Quantum cosmology is crucial to understand the evolution of the early universe. Despite significant progress, challenges still remain. For example, the role of time in quantum cosmology is unclear. Furthermore, the influence of the environment on the evolution of the quantum universe is challenging. In this work, we studied the evolution of the quantum universe non-perturbatively using the closed real-time path integral. The environments coupled to the quantum universe being considered are the radiation, the non-relativistic matter, or the dark matter. We evaluated the influence functional of …
We discuss the quantisation of a class of string cosmology models that are characterized by scale factor duality invariance. We compute the amplitudes for the full set of classically allowed and forbidden transitions by applying the reduce phase space and the path integral methods. We show that these approaches are consistent. The path integral calculation clarifies the meaning of the instanton-like behaviour of the transition amplitudes that has been first pointed out in previous investigations.
We study a tachyon model with non-minimal derivative coupling to gravity in the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker flat cosmology. We propose the special re-definition of the tachyon field which allows us to represent tachyon field equation formally coinciding with its usual form but with re-defined Hubble parameter. Two first integrals for the model equations are obtained that can essentially simplify both further analysis and analytical solving for the model. These integrals become the trivial identities in the case of minimal coupling. The effective energy density and pressure of the tachyon field …
We study the problem of gauge-invariance and gauge-dependence in one-loop quantum cosmology. We formulate some requirements which should be satisfied by boundary conditions in order to give gauge-independent path integral. The case of QED is studied in some detail. We outline difficulties in gauge-invariant quantization of gravitational field in a bounded region.
We carry out the nonperturbative canonical quantization of several types of cosmological models that have already been studied in the geometrodynamic formulation using the complex path-integral approach. We establish a relation between the choices of complex contours in the path integral and the sets of reality conditions for which the metric representation is well defined, proving that the ambiguity in the selection of complex contours disappears when one imposes suitable reality conditions. In most of the cases, the wave functions defined by means of the path integral turn out to be non-norm…
The wave function of the universe is evaluated by using the Euclidean path integral approach. As is well known, the real Euclidean path integral diverges because the Einstein-Hilbert action is not positive definite. In order to obtain a finite wave function, we propose a new regularization method and calculate the wave function of the Friedmann- Robertson-Walker type minisuperspace model. We then consider a homogeneous but anisotropic type minisuperspace model, which is known as the Bianch type I model. The physical meaning of the wave function by this new regularization method is also examine…
If the gravitational field is quantized, then a solution of Einstein's field equations is a valid cosmological model only if it corresponds to a classical limit of a quantum cosmology. To determine which solutions are valid requires looking at quantum cosmology in a particular way. Because we infer the geometry by measurements on matter, we can represent the amplitude for any measurement in terms of the amplitude for the matter fields, allowing us to integrate out the gravitational degrees of freedom. Combining that result with a path-integral representation for quantum cosmology leads to an i…
Bouncing models are alternatives to inflationary cosmology that replace the initial Big-Bang singularity by a `bouncing' phase. A deeper understanding of the initial conditions of the universe, in these scenarios, requires knowledge of quantum aspects of bouncing models. In this work, we propose two classes of bouncing models that can be studied with great analytical ease and hence, provide test-bed for investigating more profound problems in quantum cosmology of bouncing universes. Our model's two key ingredients enable us to do straightforward analytical calculations: (i) a convenient parame…
This is the third paper in a series of four in which a renormalisation flow is introduced which acts directly on the Osterwalder-Schrader data (OS data) without recourse to a path integral. Here the OS data consist of a Hilbert space, a cyclic vacuum vector therein and a Hamiltonian annihilating the vacuum which can be obtained from an OS measure, that is a measure respecting (a subset of) the OS axioms. In the previous paper we successfully tested our proposal for the two-dimensional massive Klein-Gordon model, that is, we could confirm that our framework finds the correct fixed point startin…
In the approach of Causal Dynamical Triangulations (CDT), quantum gravity is obtained as a scaling limit of a non-perturbative path integral over space-times whose causal structure plays a crucial role in the construction. After some general considerations about the relation between quantum gravity and cosmology, we examine which aspects of CDT are potentially interesting from a cosmological point of view, focussing on the emergence of a de Sitter universe in CDT quantum gravity.
The goal of spin foam models is to provide a viable path integral formulation of quantum gravity. Because of background independence, their underlying framework has certain novel features that are not shared by path integral formulations of familiar field theories in Minkowski space. As a simple viability test, these features were recently examined through the lens of loop quantum cosmology (LQC). Results of that analysis, reported in a brief communication [1], turned out to provide concrete arguments in support of the spin foam paradigm. We now present detailed proofs of those results. Since …
The path integral is calculated for the statistical sum of the microcanonical ensemble in a generic time-parametrization invariant gravitational model with the Friedman-Robertson-Walker (FRW) metric. This represents the first example of a systematic calculation of the Faddeev-Popov gauge-fixed path integral in the minisuperspace sector of quantum cosmology. The gauge fixing procedure, together with gauging out local diffeomorphisms, also handles the residual symmetries associated with the conformal Killing vector of the FRW metric and incorporates the Batalin-Vilkovisky quantization technique …
We argue that the Lorentzian path integral is a better starting point for quantum cosmology than the Euclidean version. In particular, we revisit the mini-superspace calculation of the Feynman path integral for quantum gravity with a positive cosmological constant. Instead of rotating to Euclidean time, we deform the contour of integration over metrics into the complex plane, exploiting Picard-Lefschetz theory to transform the path integral from a conditionally convergent integral into an absolutely convergent one. We show that this procedure unambiguously determines which semiclassical saddle…
A coarse graining operation of spatially homogeneous quantum states based on an SU(1,1) Lie group structure has recently been proposed in [1] and used in [2] to compute an explicit renormalisation group flow in the context of loop quantum cosmology. In this note, we explain the group theoretical origin of this procedure and generalise previous results based on these insights. We also highlight how the group theoretical origin of these techniques implies their immediate generalisation to other Lie groups.
The canonical quantization of the most general minisuperspace actions --i.e. with all six scale factor as well as the lapse function and the shift vector present-- describing the vacuum type II, VI and VII geometries, is considered. The reduction to the corresponding physical degrees of freedom is achieved through the usage of the linear constraints as well as the quantum version of the entire set of classical integrals of motion.
We derive the fixed-$Λ$ and unimodular propagators using the path integral formalism as applied to the Einstein-Cartan action. The simplicity of the action (which is linear in the lapse function) allows for an exact integration starting from the lapse function and the enforcement of the Hamiltonian constraint, leading to a product of Chern-Simons states if the connection is fixed at the endpoints. No saddle point approximation is needed. Should the metric be fixed at the endpoints, then, depending on the contour chosen for the connection, Hartle-Hawking or Vilenkin propagators are obtained. Th…
This is a technical note on the $iε$ prescription in cosmology where we consider a self-interacting scalar field in the Poincare patch of the de Sitter space whose Hamiltonian has explicit time dependence. We use both path integral and operator formalisms to work out the evolution of states from asymptotic past infinity with $iε$ prescription, which becomes nontrivial even in the free theory, and explicitly show how arbitrary states are projected onto the vacuum. We establish that in perturbation theory the $iε$ prescription can be implemented in Weinberg's commutator formula by just inserting…
Histories and measures for quantum cosmology are investigated through a quantization of the Bianchi IX cosmology using path integral techniques. The result, derived in the context of Ashtekar variables, is compared with earlier work. A non-trivial correction to the measure is found, which may dominate the classical potential for universes on the Planck scale.
Hoyle and Narlikar (HN) in the 1960's developed a theory of gravitation which was completely Machian and used both retarded and advanced waves to communicate gravitational influence between particles. The advanced waves, which travel backward in time, are difficult to visualize and although they are mathematically allowed by relativistic wave equations, they never really caught on. The HN theory reduced to Einstein's theory of gravity in the smooth fluid approximation and a transformation into the rest frame of the fluid. Unfortunately the theory has been ignored by much of the General Relativ…

Kontsevich and Segal (K-S) have proposed a criterion to determine which complex metrics should be allowed, based on the requirement that quantum field theories may consistently be defined on these metrics, and Witten has recently suggested that their proposal should also apply to gravity. We explore this criterion in the context of gravitational path integrals, in simple minisuperspace models, specifically considering de Sitter (dS), no-boundary and Anti-de Sitter (AdS) examples. These simple examples allow us to gain some understanding of the off-shell structure of gravitational path integral…
We argue that in classical and quantum theories of gravity the configuration space and Hilbert space may not be constructible through any finite procedure. If this is the case then the "problem of time" in quantum cosmology may be a pseudo-problem, because the argument that time disappears from the theory depends on constructions that cannot be realized by any finite beings that live in the universe. We propose an alternative formulation of quantum cosmological theories in which it is only necessary to predict the amplitudes for any given state to evolve to a finite number of possible successo…
For the construction of the Lorentzian path integral for gravity one faces two main questions: Firstly, what configurations to include, in particular whether to allow Lorentzian metrics that violate causality conditions. And secondly, how to evaluate a highly oscillatory path integral over unbounded domains. Relying on Picard-Lefschetz theory to address the second question for discrete Regge gravity, we will illustrate that it can also answer the first question. To this end we will define the Regge action for complexified variables and study its analytical continuation. Although there have bee…
Unlike flat space quantum field theories that focus on scattering amplitudes, the main observables in quantum cosmology are correlation functions. The systematic way of calculating correlators is called in-in formalism, which requires only a single asymptotic region, i.e. past infinity. The rules in perturbation theory and the path integral measure are very different for in-in and in-out formalisms, and thus the results which are standard in one approach may not necessarily hold in the other one. We show that stationary phase approximation works completely different for a scalar in-in path int…
In the context of FRW spacetime with zero spatial curvature, we consider a multi-scalar tensor cosmology model under the pretext of obtaining quadratic conservation laws. We propose two new interaction potentials of the scalar field. Integral to this task, is the existence of dynamical Noether symmetries which are Lie-Bäcklund transformations of the physical system. Finally, analytical solutions of the field are found corresponding to each new model. In one of the models, we find that the scale factor mimics $Λ$-cosmology in a special case.
We use the modified propagator for quantum field based on a ``principle of path integral duality" proposed earlier in a paper by Padmanabhan to investigate several results in QED. This procedure modifies the Feynman propagator by the introduction of a fundamental length scale. We use this modified propagator for the Dirac particles to evaluate the first order radiative corrections in QED. We find that the extra factor of the modified propagator acts like a regulator at the Planck scales thereby removing the divergences that otherwise appear in the conventional radiative correction calculations…
