The quantum Fisher information matrix is a central object in multiparameter quantum estimation theory. It is usually challenging to obtain analytical expressions for it because most calculation methods rely on the diagonalization of the density matrix. In this paper, we derive general expressions for the quantum Fisher information matrix which bypass matrix diagonalization and do not require the expansion of operators on an orthonormal set of states. Additionally, we can tackle density matrices of arbitrary rank. The methods presented here simplify analytical calculations considerably when, for example, the density matrix is more naturally expressed in terms of non-orthogonal states, such as coherent states. Our derivation relies on two matrix inverses which, in principle, can be evaluated analytically even when the density matrix is not diagonalizable in closed form. We demonstrate the power of our approach by deriving novel results in the timely field of discrete quantum imaging: the estimation of positions and intensities of incoherent point sources. We find analytical expressions for the full estimation problem of two point sources with different intensities, and for specific examples with three point sources. We expect that our method will become standard in quantum metrology.
We provide a new expression of the quantum Fisher information(QFI) for a general system. Utilizing this expression, the QFI for a non-full rank density matrix is only determined by its support. This expression can bring convenience for a infinite dimensional density matrix with a finite support. Besides, a matrix representation of the QFI is also given.
Taking into account the density matrices with non-full ranks, we show that the fidelity susceptibility is determined by the support of the density matrix. Combining with the corresponding expression of the quantum Fisher information, we rigorously prove that the fidelity susceptibility is proportional to the quantum Fisher information. As this proof can be naturally extended to the full rank case, this proportional relation is generally established for density matrices with arbitrary ranks. Furthermore, we give an analytical expression of the quantum Fisher information matrix, and show that th…
Quantum Fisher information matrix (QFIM) is a cornerstone of modern quantum metrology and quantum information geometry. Apart from optimal estimation, it finds applications in description of quantum speed limits, quantum criticality, quantum phase transitions, coherence, entanglement, and irreversibility. We derive a surprisingly simple formula for this quantity, which, unlike previously known general expression, does not require diagonalization of the density matrix, and is provably at least as efficient. With a minor modification, this formula can be used to compute QFIM for any finite-dimen…
Quantum Fisher information is a central quantity in quantum metrology. We discuss an alternative representation of quantum Fisher information for unitary parametrization processes. The highlight of this representation is that all information of parametrization transformation, i.e., the entire dynamical information, is totally involved in a Hermitian operator H. Utilizing this representation, quantum Fisher information is only determined by H and the initial state. We apply this representation in a collective spin system and show the specific expression of H. For a simple case, a spin-half syst…
Recently, a widely-used computation expression for quantum Fisher information was shown to be discontinuous at the parameter points where the rank of the parametric density operator changes. The quantum Cramér-Rao bound can be violated on such singular parameter points if one uses this computation expression for quantum Fisher information. We point out that the discontinuity of the computation expression of quantum Fisher information is accompanied with the unboundedness of the symmetric logarithmic derivation operators, based on which the quantum Fisher information is formally defined and the…
We derive explicit expressions for the quantum Fisher information and the symmetric logarithmic derivative (SLD) of a quantum state in the exponential form; the SLD is expressed in terms of the generator. Applications include quantum-metrology problems with Gaussian states and general thermal states. Specifically, we give the SLD for a Gaussian state in two forms, in terms of its generator and its moments; the Fisher information is also calculated for both forms. Special cases are discussed, including pure, degenerate, and very noisy Gaussian states.
A further argument is provided in the discussion on the correct form of the bound-state momentum wave function of the quasi-one-dimensional hydrogen atom; namely, considering its behavior at the large quantum indices, it is reconfirmed that the complex expression from Olendski (2017) {\it Eur. J. Phys.} {\bf 38} 038001 is a correct one. Groundlessness of other interpretations is also highlighted.
The distance between two point light sources is difficult to estimate if that distance is below the diffraction (Rayleigh's) resolution limit of the imaging device. A recently proposed technique enhances the precision of this estimation by exploiting the source-separation-dependent coupling of light into higher-order $\rm{TEM}$ modes, particularly the $\rm{TEM}_{01}$ mode of the image. We theoretically analyze the estimation of the source separation by means of homodyne or heterodyne detection with a local oscillator in the $\rm{TEM}_{01}$ mode, which is maximally sensitive to the separation i…
Quantum Fisher information (QFI) of the reduced two-atom state is employed to capture the quantum criticality of the superradiant phase transition in the Dicke model in the infinite size and finite-$N$ systems respectively. The analytical expression of the QFI of its ground state is evaluated explicitly. And finite-size scaling analysis is performed with the large accessible system size due to the effective bosonic coherent-state technique. We also investigate the large-size scaling behavior of the scaled QFI of the reduced $N$-atom state and show the accurate exponent.
Quantum Fisher information is a key concept in the field of quantum metrology, which aims to enhance the parameter accuracy by using quantum resources. In this paper, utilizing a representation of quantum Fisher information for a general unitary parametrization process, we study unitary parametrization processes governed by su(2) dynamics. We obtain the analytical expression for the Hermitian operator of the parametrization and the maximal quantum Fisher information. We find that the maximal quantum Fisher information over the parameter space consists of two parts, one is quadratic in the time…
Mach-Zehnder interferometer is a common device in quantum phase estimation and the photon losses in it are an important issue for achieving a high phase accuracy. Here we thoroughly discuss the precision limit of the phase in the Mach-Zehnder interferometer with a coherent state and a superposition of coherent states as input states. By providing a general analytical expression of quantum Fisher information, the phase-matching condition and optimal initial parity are given. Especially, in the photon loss scenario, the sensitivity behaviors are analyzed and specific strategies are provided to r…
In statistical estimation theory, it has been shown previously that the Wigner-Yanase skew information is bounded by the quantum Fisher information associated with the phase parameter. Besides, the quantum Cramér-Rao inequality is expressed in terms of skew information. Since these two fundamental quantities are based on the concept of quantum uncertainty, we derive here their analytical formulas for arbitrary two qubit $X$-states using the same analytical procedures. A comparison of these two informational quantifiers for two quasi-Werner states composed of two bipartite superposed coherent s…
In this work, we investigate the non-Markovianity, quantum Fisher information (QFI) and quantum coherence of a qubit in a nonequilibrium environment and have obtained the expressions of QFI and quantum coherence as well as their relationship. We have also discussed in detail the influences of the different noise parameters on these quantum sffects. The results show that the suitable parameters of the nonequilibrium environment can retard the QFI and quantum coherence in both Markovian and non-Markovian regions. In addition, the smaller memory effects and the larger the jumping rate, the greate…
Symmetric logarithmic derivative (SLD) is a key quantity to obtain quantum Fisher information (QFI) and to construct the corresponding optimal measurements. Here we develop a method to calculate the SLD and QFI via anti-commutators. This method is originated from the Lyapunov representation and would be very useful for cases that the anti-commutators among the state and its partial derivative exhibits periodic properties. As an application, we discuss a class of states, whose squares linearly depend on the states themselves, and give the corresponding analytical expressions of SLD and QFI. A n…
We consider the problem of estimating an arbitrary dynamical parameter of an quantum open system in the input-output formalism. For irreducible Markov processes, we show that in the limit of large times the system-output state can be approximated by a quantum Gaussian state whose mean is proportional to the unknown parameter. This approximation holds locally in a neighbourhood of size $t^{-1/2}$ in the parameter space, and provides an explicit expression of the asymptotic quantum Fisher information in terms of the Markov generator. Furthermore we show that additive statistics of the counting a…
We investigate spin squeezing (SS) and the quantum Fisher information (QFI) for the Jaynes-Cummings Dicke (JC-Dicke) model in a two component atomic Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) inside an optical cavity. Analytical expressions for spin squeezing and the reciprocal of the quantum Fisher information per particle (RMQFI) are derived using the frozen spin approximation. It is shown that in the superradiant phase near the critical point, maximum squeezing and maximum quantum entanglement occurs. The present study is relevant to quantum information processing and precision spectroscopy.
We show that two quantities in quantum metrology that were thought to be the same, the quantum Fisher information matrix and the Bures metric, are not the same. They differ at points at which the rank of the density matrix changes. The quantum Fisher information matrix is discontinuous at these points. However, these discontinuities are removable in some sense. We show that the expression given by the Bures metric represents the continuous version of the quantum Fisher information matrix. We also derive an explicit formula for the Bures metric for both singular and non-singular density matrice…
Multiparameter quantum estimation theory aims to determine simultaneously the ultimate precision of all parameters contained in the state of a given quantum system. Determining this ultimate precision depends on the quantum Fisher information matrix (QFIM) which is essential to obtaining the quantum Cramér-Rao bound. This is the main motivation of this work which concerns the computation of the analytical expression of the QFIM. Inspired by the results reported in J. Phys. A 52, 035304 (2019), the general formalism of the multiparameter quantum estimation theory of quantum Gaussian states in t…
Quantum Fisher information is the principal tool used to give the ultimate precision bound on the estimation of parameters for quantum channels. In this work, we present analytical expressions for the quantum Fisher information with three noisy channels for the case where the channels are in superposition of causal orders. We found that the quantum Fisher information increases as the number of causal orders increases for certain combinations. We also show that certain combinations of causal orders attain higher precision on bounds than others for the same number of causal orders. Based on our …
Heisenberg-like and Fisher-information-based uncertainty relations which extend and generalize previous similar expressions are obtained for $N$-fermion $d$-dimensional systems. The contributions of both spatial and spin degrees of freedom are taken into account. The accuracy of some of these generalized spinned uncertainty-like relations is numerically examined for a large number of atomic and molecular systems.
Any imaging device such as a microscope or telescope has a resolution limit, a minimum separation it can resolve between two objects or sources; this limit is typically defined by "Rayleigh's criterion", although in recent years there have been a number of high-profile techniques demonstrating that Rayleigh's limit can be surpassed under particular sets of conditions. Quantum information and quantum metrology have given us new ways to approach measurement ; a new proposal inspired by these ideas has now re-examined the problem of trying to estimate the separation between two poorly resolved po…
Fisher information, Shannon information entropy and Statistical Complexity are calculated for the interface of a normal metal and a superconductor, as a function of the temperature for several materials. The order parameter $Ψ({\bf r})$ derived from the Ginzburg-Landau theory is used as an input together with experimental values of critical transition temperature $T_c$ and the superconducting coherence length $ξ_0$. Analytical expressions are obtained for information and complexity measures. Thus $T_c$ is directly related in a simple way with disorder and complexity. An analytical relation is …
Relative Fisher information (IR), which is a measure of correlative fluctuation between two probability densities, has been pursued for a number of quantum systems, such as, 1D quantum harmonic oscillator (QHO) and a few central potentials namely, 3D isotropic QHO, hydrogen atom and pseudoharmonic potential (PHP) in both position ($r$) and momentum ($p$) spaces. In the 1D case, the $n=0$ state is chosen as reference, whereas for a central potential, the respective circular or node-less (corresponding to lowest radial quantum number $n_{r}$) state of a given $l$ quantum number, is selected. Sta…
We calculate the quantum Fisher information for a generic many-body fermionic system in a pure state depending on a parameter. We discuss the situations where the parameter is imprinted in the basis states, in the state coefficients, or both. In the case where the parameter dependence of coefficients results from a Hamiltonian evolution, we derive a particularly simple expression for the quantum Fisher information. We apply our findings to the quantum Hall effect, and evaluate the quantum Fisher information associated with the optimal measurement of the magnetic field for a system in the groun…
This paper deals with the problem of estimating the coupling constant $θ$ of a mixing quantum Markov chain. For a repeated measurement on the chain's output we show that the outcomes' time average has an asymptotically normal (Gaussian) distribution, and we give the explicit expressions of its mean and variance. In particular we obtain a simple estimator of $θ$ whose classical Fisher information can be optimized over different choices of measured observables. We then show that the quantum state of the output together with the system, is itself asymptotically Gaussian and compute its quantum Fi…
A two-qubit Heisenberg XYZ model with Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya (DM) and Kaplan-Shekhtman-Entin-Wohlman--Aharony (KSEA) interactions is considered at thermal equilibrium. Analytical formulas are derived for the local quantum uncertainty (LQU) and local quantum Fisher information (LQFI). Using the available expressions for the entropic quantum discord, we perform a comparative study of these measures of nonclassical correlation. Our analysis showed the following: all three measures of quantum correlation have similar qualitative and even quantitative behavior on temperature for different values of s…
Within a geometrical context, we derive an explicit formula for the computation of the symmetric logarithmic derivative for arbitrarily mixed quantum systems, provided that the structure constants of the associated unitary Lie algebra are known. To give examples of this procedure, we first recover the known formulae for two-level mixed and three-level pure state systems and then apply it to the novel case of U(3), that is for arbitrarily mixed three-level systems (q-trits). Exploiting the latter result, we finally calculate an expression for the Fisher tensor for a q-trit considering also all …
We solve the general problem of determining, through imaging, the three-dimensional positions of $N$ weak incoherent point-like emitters in an arbitrary spatial configuration. We show that a structured measurement strategy in which a linear interferometer feeds into an array of photo-detectors is always optimal for this estimation problem, in the sense that it saturates the quantum Cramér-Rao bound. We provide a method for the explicit construction of the optimal interferometer. Further explicit results for the quantum Fisher information and the optimal interferometer design that attains it ar…
Shannon entropy ($S$), Fisher information ($I$) and a measure equivalent to Fisher-Shannon complexity $(C_{IS})$ of a ro-vibrational state of diatomic molecules (O$_2$, O$_2^+$, NO, NO$^+$) with generalized Kratzer potential is analyzed. \emph{Exact} analytical expression of $I_{\rvec}$ is derived for the arbitrary state, whereas the same could be done for $I_{\pvec}$ with $\{n,\ell,m=0\}$ state. It is found that shifting from neutral to the cationic system, $I_{\rvec}$ increases while $S_{\rvec}$ decreases, consistent with the interpretation of a localization in the probability distribution. …
We investigate our ability to determine the mean position, or centroid, of a linear array of equally-bright incoherent point sources of light, whose continuum limit is the problem of estimating the center of a uniformly-radiating object. We consider two receivers: an image-plane ideal direct-detection imager and a receiver that employs Hermite-Gaussian (HG) Spatial-mode Demultiplexing (SPADE) in the image plane, prior to shot-noise-limited photon detection. We compare the Fisher Information (FI) for estimating the centroid achieved by these two receivers, which quantifies the information-accru…
We investigate the performance of entangled coherent state for quantum enhanced phase estimation. An exact analytical expression of quantum Fisher information is derived to show the role of photon losses on the ultimate phase sensitivity. We find a transition of the sensitivity from the Heisenberg scaling to the classical scaling due to quantum decoherence of the photon state. This quantum-classical transition is uniquely determined by the number of photons being lost, instead of the number of incident photons or the photon loss rate alone. Our results also reveal that a crossover of the sensi…
We study the classical and quantum Fisher information for the Lieb-Liniger model. The Fisher information has been studied extensively when the parameter is inscribed on a quantum state by a unitary process, e.g., Mach-Zehnder or Ramsey interferometry. Here, we investigate the case that a Hamiltonian parameter to be estimated is imprinted on eigenstates of that Hamiltonian, and thus is not necessarily encoded by a unitary operator. Taking advantage of the fact that the Lieb-Liniger model is exactly solvable, the Fisher information is determined for periodic and hard-wall boundary conditions, va…
The application of quantum estimation theory to the problem of imaging two incoherent point sources has recently led to new insights and better measurements for incoherent imaging and spectroscopy. To establish a more general limit beyond the case of two sources, here I evaluate a quantum bound on the Fisher information that can be extracted by any far-field optical measurement about the moments of a subdiffraction object. The bound matches the performance of a spatial-mode-demultiplexing (SPADE) measurement scheme in terms of its scaling with the object size, indicating that SPADE is close to…
We study the quantum Fisher information (QFI) and, thus, the multipartite entanglement structure of thermal pure states in the context of the Eigenstate Thermalization Hypothesis (ETH). In both the canonical ensemble and the ETH, the quantum Fisher information may be explicitly calculated from the response functions. In the case of ETH, we find that the expression of the QFI bounds the corresponding canonical expression from above. This implies that although average values and fluctuations of local observables are indistinguishable from their canonical counterpart, the entanglement structure o…
Photon losses are intrinsic for any translationally invariant optical imaging system with a non-trivial Point Spread Function, and the relation between the transmission factor and the coherence properties of an imaged object is universal -- we demonstrate the rigorous proof of this statement, based on the principles of quantum mechanics. The fundamental limit on the precision of estimating separation between two partially coherent sources is then derived. The careful study of the role of photon losses allows to resolve conflicting claims present in previous works. We compute the Quantum Fisher…
How precisely can we estimate cosmological parameters by performing a quantum measurement on a cosmological quantum state? In quantum estimation theory the variance of an unbiased parameter estimator is bounded from below by the inverse of measurement-dependent Fisher information and ultimately by quantum Fisher information, which is the maximization of the former over all positive operator valued measurements. Such bound is known as the quantum Cramer-Rao bound. We consider the evolution of a massless scalar field with Bunch-Davies vacuum in a spatially flat FLRW spacetime, which results in a…
