In this letter we report the first multi-differential measurement of correlated pion-proton pairs from 2 billion Au+Au collisions at \sqrt{s_{NN}} = 2.42 GeV collected with HADES. In this energy regime the population of Δ(1232) resonances plays an important role in the way energy is distributed between intrinsic excitation energy and kinetic energy of the hadrons in the fireball. The triple differential d3N/dMπpdpTdy distributions of correlated πp pairs have been determined by subtracting the πp combinatorial background using an iterative method. The invariant-mass distributions in the Δ(1232) mass region show strong deviations from a Breit-Wigner function with vacuum width and mass. The yield of correlated pion-proton pairs exhibits a complex isospin, rapidity and transverse-momentum dependence. In the invariant mass range 1.1 < Minv (GeV/c2) < 1.4, the yield is found to be similar for π+p and π-p pairs, and to follow a power law <Apart>^α, where <Apart> is the mean number of participating nucleons. The exponent α depends strongly on the pair transverse momentum (pT) while its pT-integrated and charge-averaged value is α = 1.5 \pm 0.08stat \pm 0.2sys.
For the very first time, the correlation femtoscopy method is applied to a kinematically complete measurement of meson production in the collisions of hadrons. The shape of the two-proton correlation function derived for the pp -> ppeta reaction differs from that for the pp -> pp(pions) and both do not show a peak structure opposite to results determined for inclusive measurements of heavy ion collisions.
The inclusive cross section for neutral pion production in the range 1<p_T<13GeV/c in |eta|<0.35 has been measured by the PHENIX experiment in proton-proton collisions at sqrt{s}=200GeV. An NLO pQCD calculation is, within the experimental and theoretical uncertainties, consistent with the measurement.
We present proton and pion tranverse momentum spectra and rapidity distributions for Au+Au collisions at 10.8A GeV/c. The proton spectra exhibit collective transverse flow effects. Evidence of the influence of the Coulomb interaction from the fireball is found in the pion transverse momentum spectra. The data are compared with the predictions of the RQMD event generator.
Asymmetric peaks in the pion-proton correlation functions were observed. Such an asymmetry indicates a displacement between the sources of the two particle species.
A detailed study of energy dependence of positive kaon to pion, negative kaon to pion and total kaon to pion multiplicity ratio have been carried out in pp collisions at 6.3, 17.3, 62.4, 200 and 900 GeV and also at root s =2.76 TeV and 7 TeV in the framework of UrQMD and DPMJET III model. Energy dependence of positive kaon to pion and negative kaon to pion show different behavior in case of UrQMD and DPMJET III model. The presence of the horn like structure in the variation of positive kaon to pion and negative kaon to pion ratio with energy for the experimental data is supported by the DPMJET…
We report on preliminary results of pion, kaon, and (anti-) proton transverse momentum spectra (-0.5 < y < 0) in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=62.4$ GeV using the STAR detector at RHIC. The particle identification (PID) is achieved by a combination of the STAR TPC and the new TOF detectors, which allow a PID coverage in transverse momentum ($p_T$) up to 7 GeV/c for pions, 3 GeV/c for kaons, and 5 GeV/c for (anti-) protons.
Correlations between non-identical particles at small relative velocity probe asymmetries in the average space-time emission points at freeze-out. The origin of such asymmetries may be from long-lived resonances, bulk collective effects, or differences in the freeze-out scenario for the different particle species. STAR has extracted pion-proton correlation functions from a dataset of Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200$ $GeV$. We present correlation functions in the spherical harmonic decomposition representation, for different centralities and for different combinations of pions and (anti-…
NA44 has measured mid-rapidity deuteron spectra from AA collisions at sqrt{s}=18GeV/A at the CERN SPS. Combining these spectra with published proton, antiproton and antideuteron data allows us to calculate, within a coalescence framework, proton and antiproton source sizes and phase space densities. These results are compared to pion source sizes and densities, pA results and to lower energy (AGS) data. The antiproton source is larger than the proton source at sqrt{s}=18GeV/A. The phase space densities of pions and protons are not constant but grow with system size. Both pi+ and proton radii d…
We present spectra of charged pions and protons in 0-10% central Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200$ GeV at mid-rapidity ($y=0$) and forward pseudorapidity ($η=2.2$) measured with the BRAHMS experiment at RHIC. The spectra are compared to spectra from p+p collisions at the same energy scaled by the number of binary collisions. The resulting nuclear modification factors for central Au+Au collisions at both $y=0$ and $η=2.2$ exhibit suppression for charged pions but not for (anti-)protons at intermediate $p_T$. The $\bar{p}/π^-$ ratios have been measured up to $p_T\sim 3$ GeV/$c$ at the two …
Results are presented of an analysis of proton and charged pion azimuthal distributions measured with respect to the reaction plane in Au + Au collisions at a beam momentum of about 11 AGeV/c. The azimuthal anisotropy is studied as a function of particle rapidity and transverse momentum for different centralities of the collisions. The triple differential (in rapidity, transverse momentum, and azimuthal angle) distributions are reconstructed. A comparison of the results with a previous analysis of charged particle and transverse energy flow as well as with model predictions is presented.
In experiment on the study of the quasielastic pion-proton scattering at large momentum transfer on nuclei the proton Fermi-momentum distributions have been analysed in plane-wave approximation for light nuclei $^6$Li, $^7$Li and $^{12}$C. It was found that, contrary to (e,e') experiments, that the oscillator model gives slightly better description of our data than the Fermi - gas model. But the values of parameters of the distributions obtained in our analysis are considerably smaller, than in (e,e') experiments. It gives evidence that the plane-wave approximation is not sufficient and more c…
Collective flow of protons and negative pions has been studied within the momentum region of $4.2 ÷4.5$ AGeV/c ($E =3.4 ÷3.7$ AGeV) for different projectile-target combinations involving carbon and, specifically, He-C, C-C, C-Ne, C-Cu and C-Ta. The data stem from the SKM-200-GIBS streamer chamber and from Propane Bubble Chamber systems utilized at JINR. The directed flow of protons grows dramatically in the carbon region when the counterpart nucleus grows in mass between He and Ta. The elliptic proton flow points out of the reaction plane and also strengthens as system mass increases. Within t…
For the very first time, the correlation femtoscopy method is applied to a kinematically complete measurement of meson production in the collisions of hadrons. A two-proton correlation function was derived from the data for the pp -> ppX reaction, measured near the threshold of eta meson production. A technique developed for the purpose of this analysis permitted to establish the correlation function separately for the production of the pp+eta and of the pp+pions systems. The shape of the two-proton correlation function for the ppeta differs from that for the pp(pions) and both do not show a p…
An analysis of inclusive pion production in proton-beryllium collisions at 6.4, 12.3, and 17.5 GeV/c proton beam momentum has been performed. The data were taken by Experiment 910 at the Alternating Gradient Synchrotron at the Brookhaven National Laboratory. The differential $π^+$ and $π^-$ production cross sections ($d^2σ/dpdΩ$) are measured up to 400 mRad in $θ_π$ and up to 6 GeV/c in $p_π$. The measured cross section is fit with a Sanford-Wang parameterization.
For central PbPb collisions at a center of mass energy of 17.3 GeV/nucleon we have made the first two-dimensional measurement of the pp correlation function. These data extend the range of previous studies of HBT radii by a factor of two in transverse mass. They are consistent with a hydrodynamic interpretation and microscopic models that include hadronic rescattering and transverse expansion. We also report new data on pion correlations. The two particle correlations of negative pions at a transverse mass of 0.92 GeV imply source radii that are smaller than typical hydrodynamic fits and trans…
Analyzing powers of pion-proton elastic scattering have been measured at PSI with the Low Energy Pion Spectrometer LEPS as well as a novel polarized scintillator target. Angular distributions between 40 and 120 deg (c.m.) were taken at 45.2, 51.2, 57.2, 68.5, 77.2, and 87.2 MeV incoming pion kinetic energy for pi+ p scattering, and at 67.3 and 87.2 MeV for pi- p scattering. These new measurements constitute a substantial extension of the polarization data base at low energies. Predictions from phase shift analyses are compared with the experimental results, and deviations are observed at low e…
STAR has performed a correlation analyses of pion-kaon and pion-proton pairs for sqrt(s_NN)=130 AGeV and sqrt(s_NN)=200 AGeV and kaon-proton, proton-Lambda and pion-Cascade pairs for AuAu collisions sqrt(s_NN)=200 AGeV. They show that average emission space-time points of pions, kaons and protons are not the same. These asymmetries are interpreted as a consequence of transverse radial expansion of the system; emission time differences explain only part of the asymmetry. Therefore our measurements independently confirm the existence of transverse radial flow. Furthermore, correlations of strang…
Nuclear modification factor ($R_{cp}$) of protons and pions are investigated by simulating Au + Au collisions from 0.8 to 1.8$A$ GeV in a framework of an isospin-dependent quantum molecular dynamics (IQMD) model. $R_{cp}$ of protons rises with the increase of \pt~ at different beam energies owing to radial flow and Cronin effect. The rate of increase of \rcp~ is suppressed at higher beam energies. The significant difference of $R_{cp}$ between protons and pions indicates different medium effects between protons and pions. By changing the in-medium nucleon-nucleon cross section, the $R_{cp}$ of…
In neutrino-nucleus interactions, a proton produced with a correlated pion might exhibit a left-right asymmetry relative to the lepton scattering plane even when the pion is absorbed. Absent in other proton production mechanisms, such an asymmetry measured in charged-current pionless production could reveal the details of the absorbed-pion events that are otherwise inaccessible. In this study, we demonstrate the idea of using final-state proton left-right asymmetries to quantify the absorbed-pion event fraction and underlying kinematics. This technique might provide critical information that h…
The total and differential cross sections of high energy pion-proton and pion-pion scattering are investigated in a holographic QCD model, focusing on the Regge regime in which the Pomeron exchange gives the dominant contribution to those cross sections. The Pomeron is described by the Reggeized spin-2 particle propagator, and the hadron-Pomeron couplings are given by gravitational form factors of the hadrons, which are obtained from the bottom-up AdS/QCD models. Since the parameters, which characterize the Pomeron trajectory, have been determined in a preceding study of the proton-proton scat…
Using the delta-shell representation we present a successful fit to neutron-proton and proton-proton scattering data below pion production threshold. A detailed overview of the theory necessary to calculate observables with this potential is presented. A new data selection process is used to obtain the largest mutually consistent data base. The analysis includes data within the years 1950 to 2013. Using 46 parameters we obtain chi^2/Ndata = 1.04 with Ndata = 6713 including normalization data. Phase shifts with error bars are provided.
New results from polarized p-p collisions at sqrt(s)=200 GeV of double longitudinal spin asymmetry in pi0 production using the PHENIX detector in the 2005 RHIC run are presented. Both positive and negative maximal gluon polarization scenarios are inconsistent with the data. The data is consistent with small |Δg|, including Δg=0.
In this work we report on the production of charged pions, kaons, and (anti) protons in pp and Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt{s_NN}= 2.76 TeV for 3 < pT < 20 GeV/c. The evolution of the nuclear modification factor, RAA, with collision centrality and transverse momentum is discussed.
We compare the inclusive transverse momentum spectra of single pions above pT = 3 GeV/c measured in proton-proton (p-p) collisions at sqrt(s) = 21.7 - 23.8 GeV, with next-to-leading order (NLO) perturbative QCD (pQCD) predictions using recent parametrizations of the parton densities and parton-to-pion fragmentation functions. Although the dependence on the theoretical scales is large, the calculations can reproduce the experimental results both in magnitude and shape. Based on the existing data and on a pQCD $\sqrt{s}$-rescaling of the measured spectra, we provide a practical parametrization o…
The measurement of primary $π^{\pm}$, K$^{\pm}$, p and $\overline{p}$ production at mid-rapidity ($|y| <$ 0.5) in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 7$ TeV performed with ALICE (A Large Ion Collider Experiment) at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is reported. Particle identification is performed using the specific ionization energy loss and time-of-flight information, the ring-imaging Cherenkov technique and the kink-topology identification of weak decays of charged kaons. Transverse momentum spectra are measured from 0.1 up to 3 GeV/$c$ for pions, from 0.2 up to 6 GeV/$c$ for kaons and fr…
The zero-degree calorimeters (ZDC) installed in the ALICE, ATLAS and CMS experiments at the LHC, make possible simultaneous detection of forward-backward leading neutrons, pp=>nXn. Such data with sufficiently high statistics could be a source of information about the pion-pion total cross section at high energies, provided that the absorption corrections, which are expected to be strong, are well understood. Otherwise, making a plausible assumption about the magnitude of the pion-pion cross section, one can consider such measurements as a way to study the absorption effects, which is the main …
We investigate the parity-violating analyzing power in neutron capture on the proton at thermal energies in the framework of chiral effective field theory. By combining this analysis with a previous analysis of parity violation in proton-proton scattering, we are able to extract the size of the weak pion-nucleon coupling constant. The uncertainty is significant and dominated by the experimental error which is expected to be reduced soon.
In order to investigate the nuclear symmetry energy at high density, we study the pion production in central collisions of neutron-rich nuclei ${}^{132}\mathrm{Sn}+{}^{124}\mathrm{Sn}$ at 300 MeV/nucleon using a new approach by combining the antisymmetrized molecular dynamics (AMD) and a hadronic cascade model (JAM). The dynamics of neutrons and protons is solved by AMD, and then pions and $Δ$ resonances in the reaction process are handled by JAM. We see the mechanism how the $Δ$ resonance and pions are produced reflecting the dynamics of neutrons and protons. We also investigate the impacts o…
Working with proton and pion valence distribution functions (DFs) determined consistently at the same, unique hadron scale and exploiting the possibility that there is an effective charge which defines an evolution scheme for DFs that is all-orders exact, we obtain a unified body of predictions for all proton and pion DFs - valence, glue, and four-flavour-separated sea. Whilst the hadron light-front momentum fractions carried by identifiable parton classes are the same for the proton and pion at any scale, the pointwise behaviour of the DFs is strongly hadron-dependent. All calculated distribu…
High-p_T pion and kaon production is studied in relativistic proton-proton, proton-nucleus, and nucleus-nucleus collisions in a wide energy range. Cross sections are calculated based on perturbative QCD, augmented by a phenomenological transverse momentum distribution of partons (``intrinsic k_T''). An energy dependent width of the transverse momentum distribution is extracted from pion and charged hadron production data in proton-proton/proton-antiproton collisions. Effects of multiscattering and shadowing in the strongly interacting medium are taken into account. Enhancement of the transvers…
We present an analysis of hadroproduction of $J/ψ$ and $ψ(2S)$ at fixed-target energies in the framework of non-relativistic QCD (NRQCD). Using both pion- and proton-induced data, a new determination of the color-octet long-distance matrix elements (LDMEs) is obtained. Compared with previous results, the contributions from the $q \bar{q}$ and color-octet processes are significantly enhanced, especially at lower energies. A good agreement between the pion-induced $J/ψ$ production data and NRQCD calculations using the newly obtained LDMEs is achieved. We find that the pion-induced charmonium pro…
Based on a Relativistic Boltzmann-Uehling- Uhlenbeck transport model, proton and $^{3}$He induced reactions on $^{197}$Au target at beam energies of 2.8, 5, 10 and 16.587 GeV/nucleon are studied. It is found that compared with proton induced reactions, $^{3}$He induced reactions give larger cross sections of pion production, about 5 times those of the proton induced reactions. And more importantly, pion production from $^{3}$He induced reaction is more inclined to low-angle emission. Neutrino production via positively charged pion is also discussed accordingly.
Femtoscopy is providing information on system size and its dynamics in heavy-ion collisions. At ultra-relativistic energies, such as those obtained at the LHC, significant production of pions, kaons and protons enables femtoscopic measurements for these particles. In particular the dependence of system size on pair momentum and particle type is interpreted as evidence for strong collective flow. Such phenomena are naturally modeled by hydrodynamics. We present calculations within the 3+1D hydrodynamic model coupled to statistical hadronization code THERMINATOR 2, corresponding to Pb--Pb collis…
The production of charged pions, kaons and (anti)protons has been measured at mid-rapidity ($-0.5 < y < 0$) in p-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=5.02$ TeV using the ALICE detector at the LHC. Exploiting particle identification capabilities at high transverse momentum ($p_{\rm T}$), the previously published $p_{\rm T}$ spectra have been extended to include measurements up to 20 GeV/$c$ for seven event multiplicity classes. The $p_{\rm T}$ spectra for pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV, needed to interpolate a pp reference spectrum, have also been extended up to 20 GeV/$c$ to measure the nucl…
Rapidity-dependent transverse momentum spectra of negatively charged pions measured at different rapidities in proton-proton collisions at the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) at various energies within its Beam Energy Scan (BES) program are investigated by using one- and two-component standard distributions where the chemical potential and spin property of particles are implemented. The rapidity spectra are described by a double-Gaussian distribution. At the stage of kinetic freeze-out, the event patterns are structured by the scatter plots in the three-dimensional subspaces of velocity, moment…
We have measured pion single charge exchange differential cross sections on the proton at 27.5 MeV incident $π^-$ kinetic energy in the center of momentum angular range between $0^\circ$ and $55^\circ$. The extracted cross sections are compared with predictions of the standard pion-nucleon partial wave analysis and found to be in excellent agreement.
The possibility of formation of Bose-Einstein Condensation (BEC) is studied in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt s$ = 7 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider. A thermodynamically consistent non-extensive formulation of the identified hadron transverse momentum distributions is used to estimate the critical temperature required to form BEC of charged pions, which are the most abundant species in a multi-particle production process in hadronic and nuclear collisions. The obtained results have been contrasted with the systems produced in Pb-Pb collisions to have a better understanding. We observe an explicit …
We use the world data on the pion form factor for space-like kinematics and a technique previously used to extract the proton transverse densities to extract the transverse pion charge density and its uncertainty due the incomplete knowledge of the pion form factor at large values of Q2 and the experimental uncertainties. The pion charge density at small values of impact parameter b<0.1 fm is dominated by this incompleteness error while the range between 0.1-0.3 fm is relatively well constrained. A comparison of pion and proton transverse charge densities shows that the pion is denser than the…
A simple model of nonfemtoscopic particle correlations in proton-proton collisions is proposed. The model takes into account correlations induced by the conservation laws as well as correlations induced by minijets. It reproduces well the two-pion nonfemtoscopic correlations of like-sign and unlike-sign pions in proton-proton collision events at $\sqrt{s} = 900$ GeV analyzed by the ALICE Collaboration. We also argue that similar nonfemtoscopic correlations can appear in the hydrodynamic picture with event-by-event fluctuating nonsymmetric initial conditions that are typically associated with n…
Within a nuclear model that the deuteron has NN and πNN components, we derive convolution formula for investigating the Drell-Yan process in proton-deuteron (pd) reactions. The contribution from the πNN component is expressed in terms of a pion momentum distribution that depends sensitively on the πNN form factor. With a πNN form factor determined by fitting the πN scattering data up to invariant mass W = 1.3 GeV, we find that the pion-exchange and nucleon Fermi-motion effects can change significantly the ratios between the proton-deuteron and proton-proton Drell-Yan cross sections, R_{pd/pp} …
The holographic light-front QCD framework provides a unified nonperturbative description of the hadron mass spectrum, form factors and quark distributions. In this article we extend holographic QCD in order to describe the gluonic distribution in both the proton and pion from the coupling of the metric fluctuations induced by the spin-two Pomeron with the energy momentum tensor in anti--de Sitter space, together with constraints imposed by the Veneziano model{\color{blue},} without additional free parameters. The gluonic and quark distributions are shown to have significantly different effecti…
We calculate characteristic time scales for chemical equilibration of pions in hot hadronic matter using an effective chiral Lagrangian. We find that inelastic processes involving the vector and axial vector mesons reduce the chemical equilibration time by a factor of $\sim 10$ compared to the result previously calculated in chiral perturbation theory. For a temperature of $T\sim 150 MeV$ we obtain a chemical relaxation time of $τ_{ch} \simeq 10 fm/c$, which is comparable with typical time scales for a hadronic system generated in SPS-energy heavy ion collisions. The effect of baryons is also …
Many data in the high energy physics are, in fact, sample means. It is shown that when this exact meaning of the data is taken into account and the most weakly bound states are removed from the hadron resonance gas, the acceptable fit to the whole spectra of pions, kaons and protons measured at midrapidity in central Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 2.76$ TeV [Phys.Rev.Lett.109,252301(2012)] is obtained. The invariant distributions are predicted with the help of the single-freeze-out model in the chemical equilibrium framework. Low $p_{T}$ pions and protons are reproduced simultaneously as…
We present a state-of-the-art calculation of the isovector quark helicity Bjorken-$x$ distribution in the proton using lattice-QCD ensembles at the physical pion mass. We compute quasi-distributions at proton momenta $P_z \in \{2.2, 2.6, 3.0\}$~GeV on the lattice, and match them systematically to the physical parton distribution using large-momentum effective theory (LaMET). We reach an unprecedented precision through high statistics in simulations, large-momentum proton matrix elements, and control of excited-state contamination. The resulting distribution with combined statistical and system…
