We report a ground state with strongly coupled magnetic and charge density wave orders mediated via orbital ordering in the layered compound \tbt. In addition to the commensurate antiferromagnetic (AFM) and charge density wave (CDW) orders, new magnetic peaks are observed whose propagation vector equals the sum of the AFM and CDW propagation vectors, revealing an intricate and highly entwined relationship. This is especially interesting given that the magnetic and charge orders lie in different layers of the crystal structure where the highly localized magnetic moments of the Tb$^{3+}$ ions are netted in the Tb-Te stacks, while the charge order is formed by the conduction electrons of the adjacent Te-Te layers. Our results, based on neutron diffraction and resonant x-ray scattering reveal that the charge and magnetic subsystems mutually influence each other via the orbital ordering of Tb$^{3+}$ ions.
We present a high energy-resolution inelastic x-ray scattering investigation of the soft phonon mode in the charge-density-wave system TbTe$_3$. We analyze our data based on lattice dynamical calculations using density-functional-perturbation-theory and find clear evidence that strongly momentum dependent electron-phonon-coupling defines the periodicity of the CDW superstructure: Our experiment reveals strong phonon softening and increased phonon line widths over a large part in reciprocal space adjacent to the CDW ordering vector $q_{CDW} = (0, 0, 0.3)$. Further, $q_{CDW}$ is clearly offset f…
The anharmonic response of charge-density wave (CDW) order to strong laser-pulse perturbations in 1T-TaS_2 and TbTe_3 is investigated by means of a multiple-pump-pulse time-resolved femtosecond optical spectroscopy. We observe remarkable anharmonic effects hitherto undetected in the systems exhibiting collective charge ordering. The efficiency for additional excitation of the amplitude mode by a laser pulse becomes periodically modulated after the mode is strongly excited into a coherently oscillating state. A similar effect is observed also for some other phonons, where the cross-modulation a…
A new scheme of the iterative perturbation theory is proposed for the strongly correlated electron systems with orbital degeneracy. The method is based on the modified self-energy of Yeyati, et al. which interpolates between the weak and the strong correlation limits, but a much simpler scheme is proposed which is useful in the case of the strong correlation with orbital degeneracy. It will be also useful in the study of the electronic structures combined with the band calculations.
Spectra of one-electron and collective excitations in narrow-band ferromagnets with unquenched orbital moments are calculated in various theoretical models. The interaction of spin and orbital excitations with conduction electrons results in the damping of the former which, however, turns out to be rather small; therefore, apart from usual spin waves, well-defined orbitons can exist. Non-quasiparticle states occur in the electron energy spectrum near the Fermi energy due to this interaction. The criteria of stability of the saturated spin and orbital ferromagnetic ordering are considered. Poss…
We study the interplay of spin, orbital and lattice degrees of freedom in a one-dimensional Kugel-Khomskii model coupled to phonons. In the vicinity of the dimer point we analyze the excitation spectrum, mapping the spin and orbital degrees of freedom to bond operators. In particular we study the renormalization of the phonon propagator due to coupling to the orbital and magnetic excitations. Considering both, ferro- and antiferro-orbital ordering we will show that the appearance of orbiton shake-up processes in the phonon spectrum is sensitive to the type of Jahn-Teller distortion. The releva…
The local structure of NaTiSi$_{2}$O$_{6}$ is examined across its Ti-dimerization orbital-assisted Peierls transition at 210 K. An atomic pair distribution function approach evidences local symmetry breaking preexisting far above the transition. The analysis unravels that on warming the dimers evolve into a short range orbital degeneracy lifted (ODL) state of dual orbital character, persisting up to at least 490 K. The ODL state is correlated over the length scale spanning $\sim$6 sites of the Ti zigzag chains. Results imply that the ODL phenomenology extends to strongly correlated electron sy…
We report results of the study of the recently discovered magnetic resonance in the orbitally ordered phase of CeB6 (the orbital ordering resonance) in a wide frequency range 44-360 GHz. It is found that the g-factor for this resonance increases with frequency from g(44 GHz)~1.55 to g(>250 GHz)~1.7. In addition to the orbital ordering resonance for the frequencies exceeding 200 GHz a new magnetic resonance with the g-factor 1.2-1.3 is detected.
The effects of electronic correlations and orbital degeneracy on thermoelectric properties are studied within the context of multi-orbital Hubbard models on different lattices. We use dynamical mean field theory with iterative perturbation theory as a solver to calculate the self-energy of the models in wide range of interaction strengths. The Seebeck coefficient, which measures the voltage drop in response to a temperature gradient across the system, shows a non-monotonic behavior with temperatures in the presence of strong correlations. This anomalous behavior is associated with a crossover …
Different types of order are discussed in the context of strongly correlated transition metal oxides, involving pure compounds and $3d^{3}-4d^{4}$ and $3d^{2}-4d^{4}$ hybrids. Apart from standard, long-range spin and orbital orders we observe also exotic non-colinear spin patterns. Such patters can arise in presence of atomic spin-orbit coupling, which is a typical case, or due to spin-orbital entanglement at the bonds in its absence, being much less trivial. Within a special interacting one-dimensional spin-orbital model it is also possible to find a rigorous topological magnetic order in a g…
A three-orbital-model approach for studying spin wave excitations in the strongly spin-orbit coupled layered perovskite iridates is presented which provides a unified description of magnetic excitations as well as the electronic band structure. The calculated spin wave dispersions with realistic three-band parameters are in excellent agreement with the RIXS data for iridates, including the strong AF zone boundary dispersion in the single-layer compound $\rm Sr_2 Ir O_4$ and the large anisotropy gap in the bilayer compound $\rm Sr_3 Ir_2 O_7$. The RIXS spin wave data is shown to provide evidenc…
Density functional theory calculations with an on-site Coulomb repulsion term (GGA+U method) reveal competing ground states in (111) oriented (LaAlO$_3$)$_M$/(SrTiO$_3$)$_N$ superlattices with n-type interfaces, ranging from spin, orbital polarized, Dirac point Fermi surface to charge ordered flat band phases. These are steered by the interplay of (i) Hubbard U, (ii) SrTiO$_3$ quantum well thickness and (iii) crystal field spitting tied to in-plane strain. In the honeycomb lattice bilayer case N=2 under tensile strain inversion symmetry breaking drives the system from a ferromagnetic Dirac poi…
Motivated by recent experiments on quasi-1D vanadium oxides, we study quantum phase transitions in a one-dimensional spin-orbital model describing a Haldane chain and a classical Ising chain locally coupled by the relativistic spin-orbit interaction. By employing a field-theoretical approach, we analyze the topology of the ground-state phase diagram and identify the nature of the phase transitions. In the strong coupling limit, a long-range Néel order of entangled spin and orbital angular momentum appears in the ground state. We find that, depending on the relative scales of the spin and orbit…
The description of quantized collective excitations stands as a landmark in the quantum theory of condensed matter. A prominent example occurs in conventional magnets, which support bosonic magnons - quantized harmonic fluctuations of the ordered spins. In striking contrast is the recent discovery that strongly spin-orbital coupled magnets, such as $α$-RuCl$_3$, may display a broad excitation continuum inconsistent with conventional magnons. Due to incomplete knowledge of the underlying interactions unraveling the nature of this continuum remains challenging. The most discussed explanation ref…
We investigate the spectral function of a hole moving in the orbital-ordered ferromagnetic planes of LaMnO$_3$, and show that it depends critically on the type of orbital ordering. While the hole does not couple to the spin excitations, it interacts strongly with the excitations of $e_g$ orbitals (orbitons), leading to new type of quasiparticles with a dispersion on the orbiton energy scale and with strongly enhanced mass and reduced weight. Therefore we predict a large redistribution of spectral weight with respect to the bands found in local density approximation (LDA) or in LDA+U.

We have developed the crystal-field approach with strong electron correlations, extended to the Quantum Atomistic Solid-State theory (QUASST), as a physically relevant theoretical model for the description of electronic and magnetic properties of 3d-atom compounds. Its applicability has been illustrated for LaCoO3, FeBr2 and Na2V3O7. According to the QUASST theory in compounds containing open 3d-/4f-/5f-shell atoms the discrete atomic-like low-energy electronic structure survives also when the 3d atom becomes the full part of a solid matter. This low-energy atomic-like electronic structure, be…
The correlated motion of electrons in multi-orbital metallic ferromagnets is investigated in terms of a realistic Hubbard model with {\cal N}-fold orbital degeneracy and arbitrary intra- and inter-orbital Coulomb interactions U and J using a Goldstone-mode-preserving non-perturbative scheme. An effective quantum parameter '\hbar'=\frac{U^2+({\cal N}-1)J^2}{(U+({\cal N}-1)J)^2} is obtained which determines, in analogy with 1/S for quantum spin systems and 1/N for the N-orbital Hubbard model, the strength of correlation-induced quantum corrections to magnetic excitations. The rapid suppression o…
We propose a computational scheme for the ab initio calculation of Wannier functions (WFs) for correlated electronic materials. The full-orbital Hamiltonian H is projected into the WF subspace defined by the physically most relevant partially filled bands. The Hamiltonian H^{WF} obtained in this way, with interaction parameters calculated by constrained LDA for the Wannier orbitals, is used as an ab initio setup of the correlation problem, which can then be solved by many-body techniques, e.g., dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). In such calculations the self-energy operator Σ(e) is defined in…
A superposition of the Pauli and orbital coupling of a high magnetic field to charge carriers in a charge-density-wave (CDW) system is proposed to give rise to transitions between subphases with quantized values of the CDW wavevector. By contrast to the purely orbital field-induced density-wave effects which require a strongly imperfect nesting of the Fermi surface, the new transitions can occur even if the Fermi surface is well nested at zero field. We suggest that such transitions are observed in the organic metal $α$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$KHg(SCN)$_4$ under a strongly tilted magnetic field.
We investigate a quarter-filled two-band Hubbard model involving a crystal-field splitting, which lifts the orbital degeneracy as well as an inter-orbital hopping (inter-band hybridization). Both terms are relevant to the realistic description of correlated materials such as transition-metal oxides. The nature of the Mott metal-insulator transition is clarified and is found to depend on the magnitude of the crystal-field splitting. At large values of the splitting, a transition from a two-band to a one-band metal is first found as the on-site repulsion is increased and is followed by a Mott tr…
We present a technique to map an electronic model with local interactions (a generalized multi-orbital Hubbard model) onto an effective model of interacting classical spins, by requiring that the thermodynamic potentials associated to spin rotations in the two systems are equivalent up to second order in the rotation angles. This allows to determine the parameters of relativistic and non-relativistic magnetic interactions in the effective spin model in terms of equilibrium Green's functions of the electronic model. The Hamiltonian of the electronic system includes, in addition to the non-relat…
Orbital differentiation is a common theme in multiorbital systems, yet a complete understanding of it is still missing. Here, we consider a minimal model for orbital differentiation in Hund metals with a highly accurate method: We use the numerical renormalization group as a real-frequency impurity solver for a dynamical mean-field study of three-orbital Hubbard models, where a crystal field shifts one orbital in energy. The individual phases are characterized with dynamic correlation functions and their relation to diverse Kondo temperatures. Upon approaching the orbital-selective Mott transi…
Strongly anisotropic spin-orbit coupling (SOC) renormalization and strongly enhanced orbital magnetic moments are obtained in the fully self consistent approach including the orbital off-diagonal spin and charge condensates. For moderate tetragonal distortion as in $\rm Ca_2 RuO_4$, dominantly planar antiferromagnetic (AFM) order with small canting of moments in and about the crystal $c$ axis are obtained. For reduced tetragonal distortion, we find a tunable regime wherein the magnetic order can be tuned (AFM or FM) by the bare SOC strength and octahedral tilting magnitude. In this regime, wit…
It is proven that the sum rules for X-ray magnetic dichroism (XMCD) spectra that are used to separate spin and orbital contributions to the magnetic moment are formally correct for an arbitrary strength of electron-electron interactions. However, their practical application for strongly correlated systems can become complicated due to the spectral density weight spreading over a broad energy interval. Relevance of incoherent spectral density for the XMCD sum rules is illustrated by a simple model of a ferromagnet with orbital degrees of freedom.
We study the system of strongly interacting spinor bosons in a square lattice subject to the isotropic Rashba SOC $ α=β$. It supports collinear spin-bond correlated magnetic Y-x phase, a gapped in-commensurate (IC-) co-planar IC-XY-y phase, a non-coplanar commensurate (C-) $ 3 \times 3 $ Skyrmion crystal phase (SkX). The state at the Abelian point $ α=β=π/2 $ is just an AFM state in a rotated basis. Slightly away from the point, we identify a spurious $ U(1) $ symmetry, develop a novel and non-perturbative method to calculate not only the gap, but also the excitation spectrum due to the order …
Strongly interacting phonons and orbital excitations are observed in the same energy range for CuSb$_2$O$_6$, unlocking a so-far unexplored type of electron-phonon interaction. An orbital wave at $\sim 550$ cm$^{-1}$ softens on warming and strongly interferes with a phonon at $\sim 500$ cm$^{-1}$, giving rise to a merged excitation of mixed character. An electronic continuum grows on warming to the orbital ordering temperature $T_{OO}$=400 K, generating an important phonon decay channel. This direct and simultaneous observation of orbital and vibrational excitations reveals details of their co…
An approach is proposed for evaluating dipolar and multipolar inter-site interactions in strongly correlated materials. This approach is based on the single-site dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) in conjunction with the atomic approximation for the local self-energy. Starting from the local moment paramagnetic state described by DMFT we derive inter-site interactions by considering the response of the DMFT grand potential to small fluctuations of atomic configurations on two neighboring sites. The present method is validated by applying it to one-band and two-band e$_g$ Hubbard models on the …
The pairing mechanism in A$_3$C$_{60}$ is investigated by studying the properties of a three-orbital Hubbard model with antiferromagnetic Hund coupling in the normal and superconducting phase. Local orbital fluctuations are shown to be substantially enhanced in the superconducting state, with a fluctuation energy scale that matches the low-energy peak in the spectral weight of the order parameter. Our results demonstrate that local orbital fluctuations provide the pairing glue in strongly correlated fulleride superconductors and support the spin/orbital freezing theory of unconventional superc…
Temperature dependences of a magnetic and an orbital Bragg reflection at the Mn L2 and L3 edges of La0.5Sr1.5MnO4 have been collected. The temperature evolution of the orbital reflection depend strongly on the x-ray energy and reflects the different order parameteres for orbitals and Jahn-Teller distortions. The gradual increase of the orbital order parameter indicates that the orbital order and not the Jahn-Teller distortion drives the metal-insulator transition. Correspondingly, the orbital-orbital (super) exchange interaction dominates over the Jahn-Teller strain-field interaction.
Here, using density functional theory and density matrix renormalization group methods, we investigate the electronic and magnetic properties of RuOCl$_2$ and OsOCl$_2$ with $d^4$ electronic configurations. Different from a previous study using VOI$_2$ with $d^1$ configuration, these systems with $4d^4$ or $5d^4$ do not exhibit a ferroelectric instability along the $a$-axis. Due to the fully-occupied $d_{xy}$ orbital in RuOCl$_2$ and OsOCl$_2$, the Peierls instability distortion disappears along the $b$-axis, leading to an undistorted I${\rm mmm}$ phase (No. 71). Furthermore, we observe strong…
We extend an approximation earlier developed by us for the single-impurity Anderson model to a full-size impurity solver for models of interacting electrons with multiple orbitals. The approximation is based on parquet equations simplified by separating small and large energy fluctuations justified in the critical region of a pole in the two-particle vertex. We show that an $l$-orbital model with most general interaction is described within this approximation by $4l^{2}\times 4l^{2}$ matrices and is Fermi liquid in the metallic phase. We explicitly calculate properties of a paramagnetic soluti…
A many-body wave function can be factorized in Fock space into a marginal amplitude describing a set of strongly correlated orbitals and a conditional amplitude for the remaining weakly correlated part. The marginal amplitude is the solution of a Schrödinger equation with an effective Hamiltonian that can be viewed as embedding the marginal wave function in the environment of weakly correlated electrons. Here, the complementary equation for the conditional amplitude is replaced by a generalized Kohn-Sham equation, for which an orbital-dependent functional approximation is shown to reproduce th…
This preprint has been withdrawn, as the evidence for persistent currents found with the "infinite-size" DMRG algorithm has not been reproduced with the (presumably more accurate) "finite-size" version of the algorithm (M. Troyer and U. Schollwoeck, private communiation). A much clearer example of long-range order in orbital currents is presented in: J. O. Fjaerestad and J. B. Marston, ``Staggered Orbital Currents in the Half-Filled Two-Leg Ladder,'' cond-mat/0107094.
Superexchange calculation is performed for multi-orbital band models with broken inversion symmetry. Orbital-changing hopping terms allowed by the symmetry breaking electric field lead to a new kind of orbital exchange term closely resembling the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya spin exchange. The final superexchange Hamiltonian in two dimensions is expressed in terms of Gell-Mann matrices that break down as three spin operators and five nematic (quadrupole) order operators. Mean-field phase diagram exhibits a rich structure including anti-ferro-orbital, ferro-orbital, and both single and multiple spiral…
We revisit the formulations and simulations of angular distributions in polarization-dependent core-level photoemission spectra of strongly correlated electron systems, in order to explain the recently discovered linear dichroism (LD) in the core-level photoemission of 4f-based rare-earth compounds. Owing to the selection rules for the optical process of core-level excitations, the LD originating from the anisotropic outer localized charge distributions determined by the ground-state orbital symmetry can be observed. Our simulations show that core d-level excitations are essential for the LD i…
Mott insulators with both spin and orbital degeneracy are pertinent to a large number of transition metal oxides. The intertwined spin and orbital fluctuations can lead to rather exotic phases such as quantum spin-orbital liquids. Here we consider two-component (spin 1/2) fermionic atoms with strong repulsive interactions on the $p$-band of the optical square lattice. We derive the spin-orbital exchange for quarter filling of the $p$-band when the density fluctuations are suppressed, and show it frustrates the development of long range spin order. Exact diagonalization indicates a spin-disorde…
Uranium and plutonium's 5f electrons are tenuously poised between strongly bonding with ligand spd-states and residing close to the nucleus. The unusual properties of these elements and their compounds (eg. the six different allotropes of elemental plutonium) are widely believed to depend on the related attributes of f-orbital occupancy and delocalization, for which a quantitative measure is lacking. By employing resonant x-ray emission spectroscopy (RXES) and x-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy and making comparisons to specific heat measurements, we demonstrate the pres…
We present a novel approach to study the ground state and elementary excitations in compounds where spins and orbitals are entangled by on-site relativistic spin-orbit interaction. The appropriate degrees of freedom are localized states with an effective angular momentum J. We generalize J to arbitrary large values while maintaining the delicate spin-orbital entanglement. After projecting the inter-site exchange interaction to the manifold of effective spins, a systematic 1/J expansion of the effective Hamiltonian is realized using the Holstein-Primakoff transformation. Applications to represe…
The crossover from fluctuating atomic constituents to a collective state as one lowers temperature or energy is at the heart of the dynamical mean-field theory description of the solid state. We demonstrate that the numerical renormalization group is a viable tool to monitor this crossover in a real-materials setting. The renormalization group flow from high to arbitrarily small energy scales clearly reveals the emergence of the Fermi-liquid state of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$. We find a two-stage screening process, where orbital fluctuations are screened at much higher energies than spin fluctuations, and…
Although orbital degrees of freedom are a factor of fundamental importance in strongly correlated transition metal compounds, orbital correlations and dynamics remain very difficult to access, in particular by neutron scattering. Via a direct calculation of scattering amplitudes we show that instead magnetic resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) does reveal orbital correlations. In contrast to neutron scattering, the intensity of the magnetic excitations in RIXS depends very sensitively on both the symmetry of the orbitals that spins occupy, and on photon polarizations. We show in detail …
Introducing partial sum rules for the optical multiplet transitions, we outline a unified approach to magnetic and optical properties of strongly correlated transition metal oxides. On the example of LaVO$_3$ we demonstrate how the temperature and polarization dependences of different components of the optical multiplet are determined by the underlying spin and orbital correlations dictated by the low-energy superexchange Hamiltonian. Thereby the optical data provides deep insight into the complex spin-orbital physics and the role played by orbital fluctuations.
On the example of monolayer manganites we show that the theoretical ideas developed long ago along the derivation of the spin t-J model from the Hubbard model are nowadays very helpful in strongly correlated oxides with partly filled degenerate orbitals. We analyze a realistic orbital t-J model for e_g electrons in La_{1-x}Sr_{1+x}MnO_4 monolayer manganites, and discuss the evolution of spin and orbital correlations under increasing doping by performing exact diagonalization of finite clusters, with electronic kinetic energy determined self-consistently at finite temperature by classical Monte…
The metal-insulator transition in manganites is strongly influenced by the concentration of holes present in the system. Based upon an orbitally degenerate Mott-Hubbard model we analyze two possible localization scenarios to account for this doping dependence: First, we rule out that the transition is initiated by a disorder-order crossover in the orbital sector, showing that its effect on charge mobility is only small. Second, we introduce the idea of orbital polarons originating from a strong polarization of orbitals in the vicinity of holes. Considering this direct coupling between charge a…
We study a spin orbital model in which the spin-spin interaction couples linearly to the orbital isospin. Fluctuations drive the transition from paramagnetic state to C type ordered state into a strongly first order one, as observed in $V_2O_3$. At T=0, there is a FOCS to FOGS transition. Close to the transition point, the system shows dynamically generated dimension reduction and crossover, resulting in one or more spin reentrant transitions.
This PhD thesis conducts a focused study of strongly correlated materials with localized electron orbitals. We have studied two real materials (LuNiO$_3$ and VO$_2$) and one model system, i.e., the Anderson impurity model. The thesis is divided into two parts. In the first part, we use the DFT+$U$ method, to calculate the equilibrium phase transitions of LuNiO$_3$ as an example of rare-earth nickelates under a substrate-induced strain, and the nonequilibrium phase transitions of VO$_2$ as an example of narrow-gap Mott insulators under laser-pulse-induced photoexcitations. The effect of adding …
We show how the general and basic asymmetry between two fundamental degrees of freedom present in strongly correlated oxides, spin and orbital, has very profound repercussions on the elementary spin and orbital excitations. Whereas the magnons remain largely unaffected, orbitons become inherently coupled with spin fluctuations in spin-orbital models with antiferromagnetic and ferroorbital ordered ground states. The composite orbiton-magnon modes that emerge fractionalize again in one dimension, giving rise to spin-orbital separation in the peculiar regime where spinons are faster than orbitons…
We report a metal-insulator transition (MIT) in the half-filled multiorbital antiferromagnet (AF) BaMn$_2$Bi$_2$ that is tunable by a magnetic field perpendicular to the AF sublattices. Instead of an Anderson-Mott mechanism usually expected in strongly correlated systems, we find by scaling analyses that the MIT is driven by an Anderson localization. Electrical and thermoelectrical transport measurements in combination with electronic band calculations reveal a strong orbital-dependent correlation effect, where both weakly and strongly correlated $3d$-derived bands coexist with decoupled charg…
The metal-insulator transition in manganites is strongly influenced by the concentration of holes present in the system. Orbital degrees of freedom play a major role in the physics of many strongly correlated transition metal compounds. However, they are still very difficult to access experimentally, in particular by neutron scattering. We propose here how to reveal orbital occupancies of the system ground state by magnetic resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS). This is possible because, unlike in neutron scattering, the intensity of the magnetic excitations in RIXS depends essentially on the symmetry of the orbitals where the spins are in.
We examine a system of doubly degenerate $p$-orbital polarized fermions on a two-dimensional square lattice with a strong on-site interaction. We consider the system density at the half filling limit and tackle the strong attractive interaction using a perturbation theory. We treat the four-site square plaquette interaction term generated from the directional tunneling dependence of $p$-orbitals using the fourth order in perturbation theory. We map the strong coupling particle Hamiltonian into an effective spin-Hamiltonian and then use a variational mean field approach and a linear spin-wave t…
Basic mechanisms controlling orbital order and orbital fluctuations in transition metal oxides are discussed. The lattice driven classical orbital picture, e.g. like in manganites LaMnO$_3$, is contrasted to the quantum behavior of orbitals in frustrated superexchange models as realised in pseudocubic titanites ATiO$_3$ and vanadates AVO$_3$. In YVO$_3$, the lattice and superexchange effects strongly compete -- this explains the extreme sensitivity of magnetic states to temperature and doping. Lifting the $t_{2g}$ orbital degeneracy by a relativistic spin-orbital coupling is considered on exam…
