We investigate a quarter-filled two-band Hubbard model involving a crystal-field splitting, which lifts the orbital degeneracy as well as an inter-orbital hopping (inter-band hybridization). Both terms are relevant to the realistic description of correlated materials such as transition-metal oxides. The nature of the Mott metal-insulator transition is clarified and is found to depend on the magnitude of the crystal-field splitting. At large values of the splitting, a transition from a two-band to a one-band metal is first found as the on-site repulsion is increased and is followed by a Mott transition for the remaining band, which follows the single-band (Brinkman-Rice) scenario well documented previously within dynamical mean-field theory. At small values of the crystal-field splitting, a direct transition from a two-band metal to a Mott insulator with partial orbital polarization is found, which takes place simultaneously for both orbitals. This transition is characterized by a vanishing of the quasiparticle weight for the majority orbital but has a first-order character for the minority orbital. It is pointed out that finite-temperature effects may easily turn the metallic regime into a bad metal close to the orbital polarization transition in the metallic phase.
We use high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to investigate the electronic structure of the antiferromagnetic heavy fermion compound CePt2In7, which is a member of the CeIn3-derived heavy fermion material family. Weak hybridization among 4f electron states and conduction bands was identified in CePt2In7 at low temperature much weaker than that in the other heavy fermion compounds like CeIrIn5 and CeRhIn5. The Ce 4f spectrum shows fine structures near the Fermi energy, reflecting the crystal electric field splitting of the 4f^1_5/2 and 4f^1_7/2 states. Also, we find that the…

The unusual and interesting physical properties of rare earth intemetallic compounds have their origin in the combination of strongly correlated 4f states and their hybridization with the conduction electron sea, which gives rise to their complex low temperature Kondo behavior. In particular, Ce compounds are very sensitive to the crystalline and chemical environment, as compared to other rare earth systems. The interaction of the 4f state with the conduction band plays an important role in the determination of the different magnetic, structural and transport properties of these systems. Among…
We study the quasiparticle spectrum in an underscreened Kondo-lattice (KL) model that involves a single spin degenerate conduction band and two crystalline-electric-field (CEF) split Kramers doublets coupled by both orbital-diagonal and non-diagonal exchange interactions. We find the three quasiparticle bands of the model using a constrained fermionic mean field approach. While two bands are similar to the one-orbital model a new genuinely heavy band inside the main hybridization gap appears in the quasiquartet model. Its dispersion is due to effective hybridization with conduction states but …
We investigate the electronic structure of SrMnO$_3$ with Density Functional Theory (DFT) plus Dynamical Mean-Field Theory (DMFT). Within this scheme the selection of the correlated subspace and the construction of the corresponding Wannier functions is a crucial step. Due to the crystal field splitting of the Mn-$3d$ orbitals and their separation from the O-2$p$ bands, SrMnO$_3$ is a material where on first sight a 3-band $d$-only model should be sufficient. However, in the present work we demonstrate that the resulting spectrum is considerably influenced by the number of correlated orbitals …
An unusual orbital state was recently proposed to explain the magnetic and transport properties of Ba$_3$CoRu$_2$O$_9$ [Phys. Rev. B. {\bf 85}, 041201 (2012)]. We show that this state contradicts to the first Hund's rule and does not realize in the system under consideration because of a too small crystal-field splitting in the $t_{2g}$ shell. A strong suppression of the local magnetic moment in Ba$_3$CoRu$_2$O$_9$ is attributed to a strong hybridization between the Ru 4$d$ and O 2$p$ states.
The electronic structure of the corundum-type transition-metal oxides V2O3 and Ti2O3 is studied by means of the augmented spherical wave method, based on density-functional theory and the local density approximation. Comparing the results for the vanadate and the titanate allows us to understand the peculiar shape of the metal 3d a_{1g} density of states, which is present in both compounds. The a_{1g} states are subject to pronounced bonding-antibonding splitting due to metal-metal overlap along the c-axis of the corundum structure. However, the corresponding partial density of states is stron…
Theoretical account is given of 4f-electron dynamics and multipole orders in Pr skutterudites with particular attention to (i) mechanism of the crystalline electric field (CEF) splitting leading to a pseudo-quartet ground state;(ii) Kondo effect due to exchange interactions involving the pseudo-quartet;(iii) multipole orders in the lattice of the pseudo-quartet in magnetic field.Competition between the point-charge interaction andhybridization between 4f and conduction electrons is identified as the key for controlling the CEF splitting. It is found that one of two pseudo-spins forming the pse…

Possible Kondo effect in Pr skutterudite is studied with attention to characteristic features of low-lying crystalline electric field (CEF) levels and the conduction band. A mechanism for the small CEF splitting between a singlet and a triplet is proposed as combination of the point-charge interaction and hybridization of 4f with ligand p states. Provided 4f^3 configurations dominate over 4f^1 as intermediate states, p-f hybridization favors the triplet, while point-charge interaction favors the singlet. For realistic parameters for hybridization as well as 4f^1 and 4f^3 levels, these singlet …
Magnetic field effects in Kondo insulators are studied theoretically, using a local moment approach to the periodic Anderson model within the framework of dynamical mean-field theory. Our main focus is on field-induced changes in single-particle dynamics and the associated hybridization gap in the density of states. Particular emphasis is given to the strongly correlated regime, where dynamics are found to exhibit universal scaling in terms of a field-dependent low energy coherence scale. Although the bare applied field is globally uniform, the effective fields experienced by the conduction el…
The crystal-field splittings of the monopnictides and monochalcogenides of Cerium (CeX and CeY) and their alloys (CeX$_{1-x}$Y$_x$) are calculated by means of an \emph{ab initio} many-body combined technique. The hybridization functions of the 4f states of Cerium with the conduction band for each material are obtained from first principles within the local density approximation (LDA) and are used as input for the Anderson impurity model, which is solved within a multi-orbital Non-Crossing Approximation (NCA). This realistic theoretical approach (LDA-NCA) is able to reproduce the experimental r…
Crystal electric field states in rare earth intermetallics show an intricate entanglement with the many-body physics that occurs in these systems and that is known to lead to a plethora of electronic phases. Here, we attempt to trace different contributions to the crystal electric field (CEF) splittings in CeIrIn$_5$, a heavy-fermion compound and member of the Ce$M$In$_5$ ($M$= Co, Rh, Ir) family. To this end, we utilize high-resolution resonant angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and present a spectroscopic study of the electronic structure of this unconventional superconductor …
We investigate the magnetic excitations in view of the recent reports suggesting that the spin-wave energy may exhibit a significant dependence on the in-plane strain of a thin film of La$_2$CuO$_4$. The nature of dependence, as we find, can be explained naturally within a two-orbital model based on the $d_{x^2-y^2}$ and $d_{3z^2-r^2}$ orbitals. In particular, as the orbital-splitting energy between the $d_{x^2-y^2}$ and $d_{3z^2-r^2}$ orbitals increases with compressive strain, the zone-boundary spin-wave energy hardens. However, the hardening persists only until the orbital splitting reaches…
High-resolution laser-based angle-resolved photoemission measurements have been carried out on Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ (Bi2212) and Bi$_2$Sr$_{2-x}$La$_x$CuO$_{6+δ}$ (Bi2201) superconductors. Unexpected hybridization between the main band and the superstructure band in Bi2212 is clearly revealed. In the momentum space where one main Fermi surface intersects with one superstructure Fermi surface, four bands are observed instead of two. The hybridization exists in both superconducting state and normal state, and in Bi2212 samples with different doping levels. Such a hybridization is not ob…
We have measured the crystalline electric field (CEF) excitations of the CeMIn5 (M = Co, Rh, Ir) series of heavy fermion superconductors by means of inelastic neutron scattering. Fits to a CEF model reproduce the inelastic neutron scattering spectra and the high temperature magnetic susceptibility. The CEF parameters, energy level splittings, and wavefunctions are tabulated for each member of the CeMIn5 series and compared to each other as well as to the results of previous measurements. Our results indicate that the CEF level splitting in all three materials is similar, and can be thought of …

As heavy analog of graphene, plumbene is a two-dimensional material with strong spin-orbit coupling effects. Using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), we observe that Pb forms a flat honeycomb lattice on an Fe monolayer on Ir(111). In contrast, without the Fe layer, a c(2x4) structure of Pb on Ir(111) is found. We use density functional theory (DFT) calculations to rationalize these findings and analyze the impact of the hybridization on the plumbene band structure. In the unoccupied states the splitting of the Dirac cone by spin-orbit interaction is clearly observed while in the occupied sta…
We describe an open-source implementation of the continuous-time hybridization-expansion quantum Monte Carlo method for impurity models with general instantaneous two-body interactions and complex hybridization functions. The code is built on the ALPS libraries (Applications and Libraries for Physics Simulations).
In order to promote our basic understanding on the Kondo behavior recently observed in europium compounds, we analyze an impurity Anderson model with seven $f$ electrons at an impurity site by employing a numerical renormalization group method. The local part of the model consists of Coulomb interactions among $f$ electrons, spin-orbit coupling $λ$, and crystalline electric field (CEF) potentials, while we consider the hybridization $V$ between local $f$ electrons and single-band conduction electrons with $a_{\rm u}$ symmetry. For $λ=0$, we observe the underscreening Kondo behavior for appropr…
Within a Kondo lattice, the strong hybridization between electrons localized in real space (r-space) and those delocalized in momentum-space (k-space) generates exotic electronic states called 'heavy fermions'. In URu2Si2 these effects begin at temperatures around 55K but they are suddenly altered by an unidentified electronic phase transition at To = 17.5 K. Whether this is conventional ordering of the k-space states, or a change in the hybridization of the r-space states at each U atom, is unknown. Here we use spectroscopic imaging scanning tunnelling microscopy (SI-STM) to image the evoluti…
We report the temperature evolution of the detailed electronic band structure in FeSe single-crystals measured by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), including the degeneracy removal of the $d_{xz}$ and $d_{yz}$ orbitals at the $Γ$/Z and M points, and the orbital-selective hybridization between the $d_{xy}$ and $d_{xz/yz}$ orbitals. The temperature dependences of the splittings at the $Γ$/Z and M points are different, indicating that they are controlled by different order parameters. The splitting at the M point is closely related to the structural transition and is attributed t…
We investigate the influence of s-d or p-d hybridization to d-band ferromagnetism to estimate the importance of hybridization for the magnetic properties of transition metals. To focus our attention to the interplay between hybridization and correlation we investigate a simple model system consisting of two non-degenerated hybridized bands, one strongly correlated, the other one quasi-free. To solve this extended Hubbard model, we apply simple approximations, namely SDA and MAA, that, concerning ferromagnetism in the single-band model, are known to give qualitatively satisfactory results. This…

We introduce a new implementation of hybridization expansion continuous time quantum impurity solver which is relevant to dynamical mean-field theory. It employs Newton interpolation at a sequence of real Leja points to compute the time evolution of the local Hamiltonian efficiently. Since the new algorithm avoids not only computationally expansive matrix-matrix multiplications in conventional implementations but also huge memory consumptions required by Lanczos/Arnoldi iterations in recently developed Krylov subspace approach, it becomes advantageous over the previous algorithms for quantum i…
In spite of extensive studies on NiO and their accomplishments, the rich physics still raises unsolved physical problems. In particular, the nature of the two-peak structure in the valence band photoemission spectra is still controversial. By using \textit{ab initio} LQSGW+DMFT, the two-peak structure is shown to be driven by the concerted effect of antiferromagnetic ordering and intersite electron hopping. Magnetic ordering in the Ni-$e_{g}$ orbitals splits majority- and minority-spin Ni-$t_{2g}$ levels due to local Hund's coupling. Strong hybridization between O-$p$ and Ni-$e_g$, a signature…
Linear polarized soft-x ray absorption (XAS) and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) experiments have been performed on CeMIn5 with M = Rh, Ir, and Co to determine the crystal-field scheme and characteristic Kondo temperatures T* for the hybridization between 4f and conduction electrons. The ground state wave functions are determined from the polarization dependent soft-XAS data at the cerium M4,5 edge and the crystal-field splittings from INS. The characteristic temperature T* has been determined from the line widths of the neutron scattering data. We find that the quasielastic line widths of …
Orthorhombic SrIrO3 subjected to strain show tunable transport properties. With underlying symmetry remaining invariant, these properties are associated with IrO6 octahedral tilting. Adopting to first-principles methods, the effects of crystal field, spin-orbit coupling, and Coulomb correlations, on comparable interaction length scales, are discussed. While tilting induces a t2g-eg crystal-field splitting and band narrowing, spin-orbit coupling induces a partial splitting of the Jeff bands rendering SrIrO3 a semi-metallic ground state. The SOC enhanced hybridization of Ir-O orbitals, serve as …
We present a simple, but very realistic, model for a description of pressure induced valence and metal-insulator transitions in mixed valence systems. It is based on the extended Falicov-Kimball model and the supposition that the key interaction governing these transitions is the nonlocal hybridization between the localized $f$ and itinerant $d$ electrons. Taking into account, in addition, the~parametrization between the external pressure and the $d$-$f$ hybridization (the experimental fact), the model is able to describe, at least qualitatively, valence as well as metal-insulator transitions …
We present a study of the paramagnetic metallic and insulating phases of vanadium sesquioxide by means of the $N$th order muffin-tin orbital implementation of density functional theory combined with dynamical mean-field theory. The transition is shown to be driven by a correlation-induced enhancement of the crystal field splitting within the $t_{2g}$ manifold, which results in a suppression of the hybridization between the $a_{1g}$ and $e_g^π$ bands. We discuss the changes in the effective quasi-particle band structure caused by the correlations and the corresponding self-energies. At temperat…
We present an approach to monitor and control the strength of the hybridization between electronic states of graphene and metal surfaces. Inspecting the distribution of the $π$ band in a high-quality graphene layer synthesized on Ni(111) by angle-resolved photoemission, we observe a new "kink" feature which indicates a strong hybridization between $π$ and \textit{d} states of graphene and nickel, respectively. Upon deposition and gradual intercalation of potassium atoms into the graphene/Ni(111) interface, the "kink" feature becomes less pronounced pointing at potassium mediated attenuation of…
In a magnetic multilayer, the spin transfer between localized magnetization dynamics and itinerant conduction spin arises from the interaction between a normal metal and an adjacent ferromagnetic layer. The spin-mixing conductance then governs the spin-transfer torques and spin pumping at the magnetic interface. Theoretical description of spin-mixing conductance at the magnetic interface often employs a single conduction-band model. However, there is orbital hybridization between conduction $s$ electron and localized $d$ electron of the heavy transition metal, in which the single conduction-ba…
We study two-band one-dimensional superconducting chains of spinless fermions with inter and intra-band pairing. These bands hybridize and depending on the relative angular momentum of their orbitals this can be symmetric or anti-symmetric. The competition between intra and inter-band superconductivity and how it is affected by the symmetry of the hybridization is investigated. The interband pairing is shown to be dominant on a large region of parameter space. A rich phase diagram is found in the presence of anti-symmetric hybridization. The topological properties of the model are obtained thr…
Identifying the effects of surface-bulk coupling is a key challenge towards exploiting the topological nature of the surface states in many available three-dimensional topological `metals'. Here we combine an effective-model calculation and an ab-initio slab calculation to study the effects of the lowest order surface-bulk interaction: the hybridization. In the effective-model study, we discretize an established low-energy effective four-band model and introduce the hybridization between the surface bands and bulk bands in the spirit of the Fano model. We find that the hybridization enhances t…
Recent experiments demonstrating large spin-transfer torques in topological insulator (TI)-ferromagnetic metal (FM) bilayers have generated a great deal of excitement due to their potential applications in spintronics. The source of the observed spin-transfer torque, however, remains unclear. This is because the large charge transfer from the FM to TI layer would prevent the Dirac cone at the interface from being anywhere near the Fermi level to contribute to the observed spin-transfer torque. Moreover, there is yet little understanding of the impact on the Dirac cone at the interface from the…
The topology of the Fermi surface of an extended $d-p$ Hubbard model is investigated using the Green's function technique in a n-pole approximation. The effects of the $d-p$ hybridization on the Fermi surface are the main focus in the present work. Nevertheless, the effects of doping, Coulomb interaction and hopping to second-nearest-neighbors on the Fermi surface, are also studied. Particularly, it is shown that the crossover from hole-like to electron-like Fermi surface (Lifshitz transition) is deeply affected by the $d-p$ hybridization. Moreover, the pseudogap present in the low doping regi…
We study the interplay between electronic correlations and hybridization in the low-energy electronic structure of CaMn$_2$Bi$_2$, a candidate hybridization-gap semiconductor. Utilizing a DFT+$U$ approach we find both the antiferromagnetic Néel order and band gap in good agreement with the corresponding experimental values. We further find that, under hydrostatic pressure, the band gap is mainly governed by magnetic correlations, whereas hybridization has a greater impact on states at higher band energies. This result suggests that CaMn$_2$Bi$_2$ is more closely related to the high-temperature…
The time-dependent Mott transition in a periodic Anderson model with off-site, nearest-neighbor hybridization is studied within the framework of nonequilibrium self-energy functional theory. Using the two-site dynamical-impurity approximation, we compute the real-time dynamics of the optimal variational parameter and of different observables initiated by sudden quenches of the Hubbard-U and identify the critical interaction. The time-dependent transition is orbital selective, i.e., in the final state, reached in the long-time limit after the quench to the critical interaction, the Mott gap ope…
Microscopic models for heavy-fermion materials often assume a local, i.e., momentum-independent, hybridization between the conduction band and the local-moment f electrons. Motivated by recent experiments, we consider situations where this neglect of momentum dependence is inappropriate, namely when the hybridization function has nodes in momentum space. We explore the thermodynamic and optical properties of the highly anisotropic heavy Fermi liquid, resulting from Kondo screening in a higher angular-momentum channel. The dichotomy in momentum space has interesting consequences: While e.g. the…
The discovery of unconventional superconductivity in hole doped NdNiO2, similar to CaCuO2, has received enormous attention. However, different from CaCuO2, RNiO2 (R = Nd, La) has itinerant electrons in the rare-earth spacer layer. Previous studies show that the hybridization between Ni-dx2-y2 and rare-earth-d orbitals is very weak and thus RNiO2 is still a promising analog of CaCuO2. Here, we perform first-principles calculations to show that the hybridization between Ni-dx2-y2 orbital and itinerant electrons in RNiO2 is substantially stronger than previously thought. The dominant hybridizatio…
