We use high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to investigate the electronic structure of the antiferromagnetic heavy fermion compound CePt2In7, which is a member of the CeIn3-derived heavy fermion material family. Weak hybridization among 4f electron states and conduction bands was identified in CePt2In7 at low temperature much weaker than that in the other heavy fermion compounds like CeIrIn5 and CeRhIn5. The Ce 4f spectrum shows fine structures near the Fermi energy, reflecting the crystal electric field splitting of the 4f^1_5/2 and 4f^1_7/2 states. Also, we find that the Fermi surface has a strongly three-dimensional topology, in agreement with density-functional theory calculations.
We investigate a quarter-filled two-band Hubbard model involving a crystal-field splitting, which lifts the orbital degeneracy as well as an inter-orbital hopping (inter-band hybridization). Both terms are relevant to the realistic description of correlated materials such as transition-metal oxides. The nature of the Mott metal-insulator transition is clarified and is found to depend on the magnitude of the crystal-field splitting. At large values of the splitting, a transition from a two-band to a one-band metal is first found as the on-site repulsion is increased and is followed by a Mott tr…

We investigate magnetic excitations in an $S=3/2$ Heisenberg model representing two-dimensional antiferromagnet ${\rm Ba_2CoGe_2O_7}$. In terahertz absorption experiment of the compound, Goldstone mode as well as novel magnetic excitations, conventional magnetic resonance at 2 meV and both electric- and magnetic-active excitation at 4 meV, have been observed. By introducing a hard uniaxial anisotropy term $Λ(S^z)^2$, three modes can be explained naturally. We also indicate that, via the spin-dependent metal-ligand hybridization mechanism, the 4 meV excitation is an electric-active mode through…
High-resolution laser-based angle-resolved photoemission measurements have been carried out on Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ (Bi2212) and Bi$_2$Sr$_{2-x}$La$_x$CuO$_{6+δ}$ (Bi2201) superconductors. Unexpected hybridization between the main band and the superstructure band in Bi2212 is clearly revealed. In the momentum space where one main Fermi surface intersects with one superstructure Fermi surface, four bands are observed instead of two. The hybridization exists in both superconducting state and normal state, and in Bi2212 samples with different doping levels. Such a hybridization is not ob…
Magnetic toroidal dipole (MTD) is one of a fundamental constituent to induce magneto-electric effects in the absence of both spatial inversion and time-reversal symmetries. We report on a microscopic investigation of the atomic-scale MTD in solids by taking into account the orbital degree of freedom with a different parity. We construct an effective two-orbital $d$-$f$ tight-binding model on a polar tetragonal system for describing the atomic-scale MTD, which are obtained by incorporating the atomic spin-orbit coupling and odd-parity hybridization. The effective model exhibits two types of the…
In order to promote our understanding on electronic structure of actinide dioxides, we construct a tight-binding model composed of actinide $5f$ and oxygen $2p$ electrons, which is called $f$-$p$ model. After the diagonalization of the $f$-$p$ model, we compare the eigenenergies in the first Brillouin zone with the results of relativistic band-structure calculations. Here we emphasize a key role of $f$-$p$ hybridization in order to understand the electronic structure of actinide dioxides. In particular, it is found that the position of energy levels of $Γ_7$ and $Γ_8$ states determined from cr…
The unusual and interesting physical properties of rare earth intemetallic compounds have their origin in the combination of strongly correlated 4f states and their hybridization with the conduction electron sea, which gives rise to their complex low temperature Kondo behavior. In particular, Ce compounds are very sensitive to the crystalline and chemical environment, as compared to other rare earth systems. The interaction of the 4f state with the conduction band plays an important role in the determination of the different magnetic, structural and transport properties of these systems. Among…
Among the Cerium compounds, the heavier monochalcogenides CeY (Y=S,Se,Te) of cerium provide a class of compounds which together with the heavier monopnictides CeX (X=N,P,As,Sb,Bi) exhibit extremely interesting physical properties. The hybridization of the partially delocalized f-electrons seems to be responsible for the unusual properties, in particular the magnetic ones which show great chemical sensitivity. As compared to the monopnictides, the monochalcogenides have an additional anion p-electron which shifts the Fermi energy into the p-region of the Cerium 5d-derived density of states, and…

Crystal electric field states in rare earth intermetallics show an intricate entanglement with the many-body physics that occurs in these systems and that is known to lead to a plethora of electronic phases. Here, we attempt to trace different contributions to the crystal electric field (CEF) splittings in CeIrIn$_5$, a heavy-fermion compound and member of the Ce$M$In$_5$ ($M$= Co, Rh, Ir) family. To this end, we utilize high-resolution resonant angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and present a spectroscopic study of the electronic structure of this unconventional superconductor …
The low-carrier ordered phase below the metal-non-metal transition temperature T_MI ~ 63 K of PrRu4P12 is explored by probing magnetoresistance, magnetic susceptibility, thermoelectric power, and Hall effect on high quality single crystals. All the measured properties exhibit the signature of decimation of the Fermi surface below T_MI and anomalous behaviors below 30 K including a large thermoelectric power ~-200 uV/K and a giant negative magnetoresistance (93% at ~0.4 K). The results indicate an additional structure below 30 K and a semimetal-like ground state. The observed anomalous behavior…
X-ray diffraction, electrical resistivity, magnetization, specific heat, and thermoelectric power measurements are presented for single crystals of the new filled skutterudite compound {\CeOsAs}, which reveal phenomena that are associated with f - electron - conduction electron hybridization. Valence fluctuations or Kondo behavior dominates the physics down to $T$ $\sim$ 135 K. The correlated electron behavior is manifested at low temperatures as a hybridization gap insulating state. The small energy gap $Δ$$_1$/k$_B$ $\sim$ 73 K, taken from fits to electrical resistivity data, correlates with…
We study the effects of interband hybridization within the framework of an extended Falicov-Kimball model with itinerant $c$ and $f$ electrons. An explicit interband hybridization breaks the U(1) symmetry associated with the conservation of the difference between the total number of particles in each band. As a result, the degeneracy between multipolar electric and chiral orderings is lifted. We analyze the weak- and strong-coupling limits of the $c$-$f$ electron Coulomb interaction at zero temperature, and derive the corresponding mean-field quantum phase diagrams at half-filling for a model …
We study the quasiparticle spectrum in an underscreened Kondo-lattice (KL) model that involves a single spin degenerate conduction band and two crystalline-electric-field (CEF) split Kramers doublets coupled by both orbital-diagonal and non-diagonal exchange interactions. We find the three quasiparticle bands of the model using a constrained fermionic mean field approach. While two bands are similar to the one-orbital model a new genuinely heavy band inside the main hybridization gap appears in the quasiquartet model. Its dispersion is due to effective hybridization with conduction states but …
We investigate the electronic structure of SrMnO$_3$ with Density Functional Theory (DFT) plus Dynamical Mean-Field Theory (DMFT). Within this scheme the selection of the correlated subspace and the construction of the corresponding Wannier functions is a crucial step. Due to the crystal field splitting of the Mn-$3d$ orbitals and their separation from the O-2$p$ bands, SrMnO$_3$ is a material where on first sight a 3-band $d$-only model should be sufficient. However, in the present work we demonstrate that the resulting spectrum is considerably influenced by the number of correlated orbitals …
We utilized high-resolution resonant angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) to study the band structure and hybridization effect of the heavy-fermion compound Ce2IrIn8. We observe a nearly flat band at the binding energy of 7 meV below the coherent temperature Tcoh ~ 40 K, which characterizes the electrical resistance maximum indicating the onset temperature of hybridization. However, the Fermi vector kF and the Fermi surface (FS) volume have little change around Tcoh, challenging the widely believed evolution from a high-temperature small FS to a low-temperature large FS. Our exper…
Possible Kondo effect in Pr skutterudite is studied with attention to characteristic features of low-lying crystalline electric field (CEF) levels and the conduction band. A mechanism for the small CEF splitting between a singlet and a triplet is proposed as combination of the point-charge interaction and hybridization of 4f with ligand p states. Provided 4f^3 configurations dominate over 4f^1 as intermediate states, p-f hybridization favors the triplet, while point-charge interaction favors the singlet. For realistic parameters for hybridization as well as 4f^1 and 4f^3 levels, these singlet …
The electronic structure of the corundum-type transition-metal oxides V2O3 and Ti2O3 is studied by means of the augmented spherical wave method, based on density-functional theory and the local density approximation. Comparing the results for the vanadate and the titanate allows us to understand the peculiar shape of the metal 3d a_{1g} density of states, which is present in both compounds. The a_{1g} states are subject to pronounced bonding-antibonding splitting due to metal-metal overlap along the c-axis of the corundum structure. However, the corresponding partial density of states is stron…
Theoretical account is given of 4f-electron dynamics and multipole orders in Pr skutterudites with particular attention to (i) mechanism of the crystalline electric field (CEF) splitting leading to a pseudo-quartet ground state;(ii) Kondo effect due to exchange interactions involving the pseudo-quartet;(iii) multipole orders in the lattice of the pseudo-quartet in magnetic field.Competition between the point-charge interaction andhybridization between 4f and conduction electrons is identified as the key for controlling the CEF splitting. It is found that one of two pseudo-spins forming the pse…
A Kondo lattice of strongly interacting f-electrons immersed in a sea of conduction electrons remains one of the unsolved problems in condensed matter physics. The problem concerns localized f-electrons at high temperatures which evolve into hybridized heavy quasi-particles at low temperatures, resulting in the appearance of a hybridization gap. Here, we unveil the presence of hybridization gap in Ce2RhIn8 and find the surprising result that the temperature range at which this gap becomes visible by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy is nearly an order of magnitude lower than the temper…
Our results describe an unprecedented example of change in the mechanism of magnetically-induced electric polarization from spin current to spin-dependent p-d hybridization model. We have followed the evolution of the magnetic structures of (ND4)2[FeCl5 D2O] compound using single crystal neutron diffraction under external magnetic field. The spin arrangements change from incommensurate cycloidal to commensurate distorted-cycloidal and finally to quasi-collinear. The determination of the magnetic structures allows us to explain the observed electric polarization in the different ferroelectric p…

Characteristics of hybridization and multipole orders of $4f$-electrons in Pr skutterudites are explained in terms of a pseudo-quartet composed of crystalline electric field (CEF) singlet and the triplet. It is shown that the contrasting behaviors observed in PrFe$_4$P$_{12}$ and PrOs$_4$Sb$_{12}$ are ascribed to the difference in triplet wave functions and the CEF splittings.Since a macroscopic degeneracy remains even in the ordered phase with the $Γ_3$-type antiferro-quadrupole (AFQ) order,a model with strong AFQ fluctuation and static monopole/hexadecapole order is proposed for PrFe$_4$P$_{…

The manipulation of spin degree of freedom have been demonstrated in spin polarized electron plasma in a heterostructure by using exchange-interaction induced dynamic spin splitting rather than the Rashba and Dresselhaus types, as revealed by time resolved Kerr rotation. The measured spin splitting increases from 0.256meV to 0.559meV as the bias varies from -0.3V to -0.6V. Both the sign switch of Kerr signal and the phase reversal of Larmor precessions have been observed with biases, which all fit into the framework of exchange-interaction-induced spin splitting. The electrical control of it m…
As heavy analog of graphene, plumbene is a two-dimensional material with strong spin-orbit coupling effects. Using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), we observe that Pb forms a flat honeycomb lattice on an Fe monolayer on Ir(111). In contrast, without the Fe layer, a c(2x4) structure of Pb on Ir(111) is found. We use density functional theory (DFT) calculations to rationalize these findings and analyze the impact of the hybridization on the plumbene band structure. In the unoccupied states the splitting of the Dirac cone by spin-orbit interaction is clearly observed while in the occupied sta…
Magnetic field effects in Kondo insulators are studied theoretically, using a local moment approach to the periodic Anderson model within the framework of dynamical mean-field theory. Our main focus is on field-induced changes in single-particle dynamics and the associated hybridization gap in the density of states. Particular emphasis is given to the strongly correlated regime, where dynamics are found to exhibit universal scaling in terms of a field-dependent low energy coherence scale. Although the bare applied field is globally uniform, the effective fields experienced by the conduction el…
We propose that existence of local orbital angular momentum (OAM) on the surfaces of high-Z materials play a crucial role in the formation of Rashba-type surface band splitting. Local OAM state in a Bloch state produces asymmetric charge distribution (electric dipole). Presence of surface electric field aligns the electric dipole and results in chiral OAM states and the relevant Rashba- type splitting. Therefore, the band splitting originates from electric dipole interaction, not from the Zeeman splitting as proposed in the original Rashba picture. The characteristic spin chiral structure of R…
Microscopic models for heavy-fermion materials often assume a local, i.e., momentum-independent, hybridization between the conduction band and the local-moment f electrons. Motivated by recent experiments, we consider situations where this neglect of momentum dependence is inappropriate, namely when the hybridization function has nodes in momentum space. We explore the thermodynamic and optical properties of the highly anisotropic heavy Fermi liquid, resulting from Kondo screening in a higher angular-momentum channel. The dichotomy in momentum space has interesting consequences: While e.g. the…
CeRh$_6$Ge$_4$ is an unusual example of a stoichiometric heavy fermion ferromagnet, which can be cleanly tuned by hydrostatic pressure to a quantum critical point. In order to understand the origin of this anomalous behavior, we have characterized the magnetic ordering and crystalline electric field (CEF) scheme of this system. While magnetic Bragg peaks are not resolved in neutron powder diffraction, coherent oscillations are observed in zero-field $μ$SR below $T_{\rm C}$, which are consistent with in-plane ferromagnetic ordering consisting of reduced Ce moments. From analyzing the magnetic s…
The crystal-field splittings of the monopnictides and monochalcogenides of Cerium (CeX and CeY) and their alloys (CeX$_{1-x}$Y$_x$) are calculated by means of an \emph{ab initio} many-body combined technique. The hybridization functions of the 4f states of Cerium with the conduction band for each material are obtained from first principles within the local density approximation (LDA) and are used as input for the Anderson impurity model, which is solved within a multi-orbital Non-Crossing Approximation (NCA). This realistic theoretical approach (LDA-NCA) is able to reproduce the experimental r…
In order to promote our basic understanding on the Kondo behavior recently observed in europium compounds, we analyze an impurity Anderson model with seven $f$ electrons at an impurity site by employing a numerical renormalization group method. The local part of the model consists of Coulomb interactions among $f$ electrons, spin-orbit coupling $λ$, and crystalline electric field (CEF) potentials, while we consider the hybridization $V$ between local $f$ electrons and single-band conduction electrons with $a_{\rm u}$ symmetry. For $λ=0$, we observe the underscreening Kondo behavior for appropr…
A key issue in heavy fermion research is how subtle changes in the hybridization between the 4$f$ (5$f$) and conduction electrons can result in fundamentally different ground states. CeRhIn$_5$ stands out as a particularly notable example: replacing Rh by either Co or Ir, located above or below Rh in the periodic table, antiferromagnetism gives way to superconductivity. In this photoemission study of CeRhIn$_5$, we demonstrate that the use of resonant ARPES with polarized light allows to extract detailed information on the 4$f$ crystal field states and details on the 4$f$ and conduction electr…
The compositional as well as structural asymmetries in Janus transition metal dichalcogenides (J-TMDs) and their van der Waals heterostructures (vdW HSs) induce an intrinsic Rashba spin-splitting. We investigate the variation of band-gaps and the Rashba parameter in three different Janus heterostructures having AB-stacked Mo$XY$/W$XY$ ($X$, $Y$ = S, Se, Te; $X\neq Y$) geometry with a $Y-Y$ interface, using first-principles calculations. We consider the effect of external electric field and in-plane biaxial strain in tuning the strength of the intrinsic electric field, which leads to remarkable…
