We use adaptive mesh refinement cosmological simulations to study the spatial distribution and covering fraction of OVI absorption in the circumgalactic medium (CGM) as a function of projected virial radius and azimuthal angle. We compare these simulations to an observed sample of 53 galaxies from the Multiphase Galaxy Halos Survey. Using Mockspec, an absorption line analysis pipeline, we generate synthetic quasar absorption line observations of the simulated CGM. To best emulate observations, we studied the averaged properties of 15,000 "mock samples" each of 53 sightlines having a distribution of $D/R_{vir}$ and sightline orientation statistically consistent with the observations. We find that the OVI covering fraction obtained for the simulated galaxies agrees well with the observed value for the inner halo ($D/R_{vir} \leq 0.375$) and is within $1.1σ$ in the outer halo ($D/R_{vir} > 0.75$), but is underproduced within $0.375 < D/R_{vir} \leq 0.75$. The observed bimodal distribution of OVI covering fraction with azimuthal angle, showing higher frequency of absorption along the projected major and minor axes of galaxies, is not reproduced in the simulations. Further analysis reveals the spatial-kinematic distribution of OVI absorbing gas is dominated by outflows in the inner halo mixed with a inflowing gas that originates from further out in the halo. Though the CGM of the individual simulated galaxies exhibit spatial structure, the flat azimuthal distribution occurs because the individual simulated galaxies do not develop a CGM structure that is universal from galaxy to galaxy.
Most of the baryonic mass in the circumgalactic medium (CGM) of a spiral galaxy is believed to be warm-hot, with temperature around $10^6$K. The narrow OVI absorption lines probe a somewhat cooler component at $\log \rm T(K)= 5.5$, but broad OVI absorbers have the potential to probe the hotter CGM. Here we present 376 ks Chandra LETG observations of a carefully selected galaxy in which the presence of broad OVI together with the non-detection of Lya was indicative of warm-hot gas. The strongest line expected to be present at $\approx 10^6$K is OVII $λ21.602$. There is a hint of an absorption l…
We analyze the mass, temperature, metal enrichment, and OVI abundance of the circumgalactic medium (CGM) around $z\sim 0.2$ galaxies of mass $10^9 M_\odot <M_\bigstar < 10^{11.5} M_\odot$ in the Illustris simulation. Among star-forming galaxies, the mass, temperature, and metallicity of the CGM increase with stellar mass, driving an increase in the OVI column density profile of $\sim 0.5$ dex with each $0.5$ dex increase in stellar mass. Observed OVI column density profiles exhibit a weaker mass dependence than predicted: the simulated OVI abundance profiles are consistent with those observed …
The total contribution of diffuse halo gas to the galaxy baryon budget strongly depends on its dominant ionization state. In this paper, we address the physical conditions in the highly ionized circumgalactic medium (CGM) traced by OVI absorption lines observed in COS-Halos spectra. We analyze the observed ionic column densities, absorption-line widths and relative velocities, along with the ratios of NV/OVI for 39 fitted Voigt profile components of OVI. We compare these quantities with the predictions given by a wide range of ionization models. Photoionization models that include only extraga…
The observational constraints on the baryon content of the WHIM rely almost entirely on FUV measurements. However, cosmological, hydrodynamical simulations predict strong correlations between the spatial distributions of FUV and X-ray absorbing WHIM. In this work we investigate this prediction by analyzing XMM-Newton X-ray counterparts of FUV-detected intergalactic OVI absorbers known from FUSE and HST/STIS data, and compare this information to the predictions of simulations. We study the X-ray absorption at the redshift of the only significantly detected OVI absorber in the TonS180 sightline'…
We present a study comparing OVI $λλ$1031, 1037 doublet absorption found towards group galaxy environments with that of isolated galaxies. The OVI absorption in the circumgalactic medium (CGM) of isolated galaxies has been studied previously by the "Multiphase Galaxy Halos" survey, where the kinematics and absorption properties of the CGM have been investigated. We extend these studies to group environments. We define a galaxy group to have two or more galaxies having a line-of-sight velocity difference of no more than 1000 km/s and located within 350 kpc (projected) of a background quasar sig…
We present the first galaxy-OVI absorption kinematic study for 20 absorption systems (EW>0.1~Å) associated with isolated galaxies (0.15$<z<$0.55) that have accurate redshifts and rotation curves obtained using Keck/ESI. Our sample is split into two azimuthal angle bins: major axis ($Φ<25^{\circ}$) and minor axis ($Φ>33^{\circ}$). OVI absorption along the galaxy major axis is not correlated with galaxy rotation kinematics, with only 1/10 systems that could be explained with rotation/accretion models. This is in contrast to co-rotation commonly observed for MgII absorption. OVI along the minor a…
OVI absorption in quasar spectra caused by intervening circumgalactic atmospheres suggests a downturn in the atmospheric column density in sightlines passing beyond about 100 kpc from central star-forming galaxies. This turnover supports the hypothesis that the oxygen originates in the central galaxies. When converted into oxygen space density using an Abel integral inversion, the OVI columns require greater than $\approx 10^9 M_\odot$ of oxygen concentrated near 100 kpc. Circumgalactic gas within this radius cools in less than 1 Gyr and radiates $\sim 10^{42.2}$ erg s$^{-1}$ overall. The feed…
We probe the high-ionization circumgalactic medium by examining absorber kinematics, absorber-galaxy kinematics, and average absorption profiles of 31 OVI absorbers from the "Multiphase Galaxy Halos" Survey as a function of halo mass, redshift, inclination, and azimuthal angle. The galaxies are isolated at $0.12<z_{\rm gal}<0.66$ and are probed by a background quasar within $D\approx 200$ kpc. Each absorber-galaxy pair has Hubble Space Telescope images and COS quasar spectra, and most galaxy redshifts have been accurately measured from Keck/ESI spectra. Using the pixel-velocity two-point corre…
The circumgalactic medium (CGM) traced by OVI $λλ1031, 1037$ doublet absorption has been found to concentrate along the projected major and minor axes of the host galaxies. This suggests that OVI traces accreting and outflowing gas, respectively, which are key components of the baryon cycle of galaxies. We investigate this further by examining the kinematics of 29 OVI absorbers associated with galaxies at $0.13 < z_{\rm gal} < 0.66$ as a function of galaxy color, inclination, and azimuthal angle. Each galaxy was imaged with HST and the absorption was detected in COS/HST spectra of nearby ($D<2…
Utilizing high-resolution cosmological hydrodynamic simulations we investigate various ultra-violet absorption lines in the circumgalactic medium of star forming galaxies at low redshift, in hopes of checking and alleviating the claimed observational conundrum of the ratio of NV to OVI absorbers, among others. We find a satisfactory agreement between simulations and extant observational data with respect to the ratios of the following four line pairs examined, NV/OVI, SiIV/OVI, NIII/OVI and NII/OVI. For the pairs involving nitrogen lines, we examine two cases of nitrogen abundance, one with co…
We constrain the cosmic ray (CR) population in the circumgalactic medium (CGM) of Milky Way by comparing the observations of absorption lines of OVIII ion with predictions from analytical models of CGM : precipitation (PP) and isothermal (IT) model. For a CGM in hydrostatic equilibrium, the introduction of CR suppresses thermal pressure, and affects the OVIII ion abundance. We explore the allowances given to the ratio of CR pressure to thermal pressure ($\rm{P}_{\rm{CR}}/\rm{P}_{\rm{th}}=η$), with varying boundary conditions, CGM mass content, photoionization by extragalactic ultraviolet backg…
We consider a model of the circumgalactic medium (CGM) in which feedback maintains a constant ratio of cooling time to freefall time throughout the halo, so that the entire CGM is marginally unstable to multiphase condensation. This 'precipitation model' is motivated by observations of multiphase gas in the cores of galaxy clusters and the halos of massive ellipticals. We derive from the model density and temperature profiles for the CGM around galaxies with masses similar to the Milky Way. After taking into consideration the geometrical position of our solar system in the Milky Way, we show t…
We study the effect of a fluctuating active galactic nucleus (AGN) on the abundance of circumgalactic OVI in galaxies selected from the EAGLE simulations. We follow the time-variable OVI abundance in post-processing around four galaxies - two at $z=0.1$ with stellar masses of $M_{\ast} \sim 10^{10}$ M$_{\odot}$ and $M_{\ast} \sim 10^{11}$ M$_{\odot}$, and two at $z=3$ with similar stellar masses - out to impact parameters of twice their virial radii, implementing a fluctuating central source of ionizing radiation. Due to delayed recombination, the AGN leave significant `AGN proximity zone foss…
We examine the properties of the low-redshift circumgalactic medium (CGM) around star-forming and quenched galaxies in the Simba cosmological hydrodynamic simulations, focusing on comparing HI and metal line absorption to observations from the COS-Halos and COS-Dwarfs surveys. Halo baryon fractions are generally $\lesssim 50\%$ of the cosmic fraction due to stellar feedback at low masses, and jet-mode AGN feedback at high masses. Baryons and metals in the CGM of quenched galaxies are $\gtrsim 90\%$ hot gas, while the CGM of star-forming galaxies is more multi-phase. Hot CGM gas has low metalli…
We combine the Santa-Cruz Semi-Analytic Model (SAM) for galaxy formation and evolution with the circumgalactic medium (CGM) model presented in Faerman et al. (2020) to explore the CGM properties of $L^{*}$ galaxies. We use the SAM to generate a sample of galaxies with halo masses similar to the Milky Way (MW) halo, $M_{\rm vir} \approx 10^{12}~{\rm M_{sun}}$, and find that the CGM mass and mean metallicity in the sample are correlated. We use the CGM masses and metallicities of the SAM galaxies as inputs for the FSM20 model, and vary the amount of non-thermal support. The density profiles in o…

Large OVI columns are observed around star-forming, low-redshift ~L* galaxies, with a dependence on impact parameter indicating that most O^5+ particles reside beyond half the halo virial radius (>~100 kpc). In order to constrain the nature of the gas traced by OVI, we analyze additional observables of the outer halo, namely HI to OVI column ratios of 1-10, an absence of low-ion absorption, a mean differential extinction of E(B-V)~10^-3, and a linear relation between OVI column and velocity width. We contrast these observations with two physical scenarios: (1) OVI traces high-pressure (~30 cm^…
We study the circumgalactic medium (CGM) of a z=0.54 simulated dwarf galaxy using hydroART simulations. We present our analysis methods, which emulate observations, including objective absorption line detection, apparent optical depth (AOD) measurements, Voigt profile (VP) decomposition, and ionization modeling. By comparing the inferred CGM gas properties from the absorption lines directly to the gas selected by low ionization HI and MgII, and by higher ionization CIV and OVI absorption, we examine how well observational analysis methods recover the "true" properties of CGM gas. In this dwarf…
We simulate the flux emitted from galaxy halos in order to quantify the brightness of the circumgalactic medium (CGM). We use dedicated zoom-in cosmological simulations with the hydrodynamical Adaptive Mesh Refinement code RAMSES, which are evolved down to z=0 and reach a maximum spatial resolution of 380 $h^{-1}$pc and a gas mass resolution up to 1.8$\times 10^{5} h^{-1} \rm{M}_{\odot}$ in the densest regions. We compute the expected emission from the gas in the CGM using CLOUDY emissivity models for different lines (e.g. Ly$α$, CIV, OVI, CVI, OVIII) considering UV background fluorescence, gr…
We study the nature of the low-redshift CGM in the Simba cosmological simulations as traced by ultraviolet absorption lines around galaxies in bins of stellar mass ($M_\star>10^{10}M_\odot$) for star-forming, green valley and quenched galaxies at impact parameters $r_\perp\leq 1.25r_{200}$. We generate synthetic spectra for HI, MgII, CII, SiIII, CIV, and OVI, fit Voigt profiles to obtain line properties, and estimate the density, temperature, and metallicity of the absorbing gas. We find that CGM absorbers are most abundant around star forming galaxies with $M_\star < 10^{11}M_\odot$, while th…
We present the first results from a study of OVI absorption around galaxies at $z<1.44$ using data from a near-infrared grism spectroscopic Hubble Space Telescope Large Program, the Quasar Sightline and Galaxy Evolution (QSAGE) survey. QSAGE is the first grism galaxy survey to focus on the circumgalactic medium at $z\sim1$, providing a blind survey of the galaxy population. Using the first of 12 fields, we provide details of the reduction methods, in particular the handling of the deep grism data which uses multiple position angles to minimise the effects of contamination from overlapping trac…
In several models of galaxy formation feedback occurs in cycles or mainly at high redshift. At times and in regions where feedback heating is ineffective, hot gas in the galaxy halo is expected to form a cooling flow, where the gas advects inward on a cooling timescale. Cooling flow solutions can thus be used as a benchmark for observations and simulations to constrain the timing and extent of feedback heating. Using analytic calculations and idealized 3D hydrodynamic simulations, we show that for a given halo mass and cooling function, steady-state cooling flows form a single-parameter family…

We explore the abundance, spatial distribution, and physical properties of the OVI, OVII, and OVIII ions of oxygen in circumgalactic and intergalactic media (the CGM, IGM, and WHIM). We use the TNG100 and TNG300 large volume cosmological magneto-hydrodynamical simulations. Modeling the ionization states of simulated oxygen, we find good agreement with observations of the low-redshift OVI column density distribution function (CDDF), and present its evolution for all three ions from z=0 to z=4. Producing mock quasar absorption line spectral surveys, we show that the IllustrisTNG simulations are …
We analyse the distribution and origin of OVI in the Circumgalactic Medium (CGM) of dark-matter haloes of $\sim 10^{12}$ M$_\odot$ at $z\sim1$ in the VELA cosmological zoom-in simulations. We find that the OVI in the inflowing cold streams is primarily photoionized, while in the bulk volume it is primarily collisionally ionized. The photoionized component dominates the observed column density at large impact parameters ($\gtrsim 0.3 R_{\rm vir}$), while the collisionally ionized component dominates closer in. We find that most of the collisional OVI, by mass, resides in the relatively thin bou…
We analyze the low-redshift (z~0.2) circumgalactic medium by comparing absorption-line data from the COS-Halos Survey to absorption around a matched galaxy sample from two cosmological hydrodynamic simulations. The models include different prescriptions for galactic outflows, namely hybrid energy/momentum driven wind (ezw), and constant winds (cw). We extract for comparison direct observables including equivalent widths, covering factors, ion ratios, and kinematics. Both wind models are generally in good agreement with these observations for HI and certain low ionization metal lines, but show …
The circumgalactic medium (CGM) of nearby star-forming galaxies shows clear indications of OVI absorption accompanied by little to no detectable NV absorption. This unusual spectral signature, accompanied by highly non-uniform absorption from lower ionization state species, indicates that the CGM must be viewed as a dynamic, multiphase medium, such as occurs in the presence of turbulence. Motivated by previous isotropic turbulent simulations, we carry out chemodynamical simulations of stratified media in a Navarro-Frenk-White (NFW) gravitational potential with a total mass of $10^{12}$ solar m…
Observational evidence shows that low-redshift galaxies are surrounded by extended haloes of multiphase gas, the so-called 'circumgalactic medium' (CGM). To study the survival of relatively cool gas (T < 10^5 K) in the CGM, we performed a set of hydrodynamical simulations of cold (T = 10^4 K) neutral gas clouds travelling through a hot (T = 2x10^6 K) and low-density (n = 10^-4 cm^-3) coronal medium, typical of Milky Way-like galaxies at large galactocentric distances (~ 50-150 kpc). We explored the effects of different initial values of relative velocity and radius of the clouds. Our simulatio…
We report a bimodality in the azimuthal angle ($Φ$) distribution of gas around galaxies traced by OVI absorption. We present the mean $Φ$ probability distribution function of 29 HST-imaged OVI absorbing (EW>0.1A) and 24~non-absorbing (EW<0.1A) isolated galaxies (0.08<z<0.67) within 200kpc of background quasars. We show that EW is anti-correlated with impact parameter and OVI covering fraction decreases from 80% within 50kpc to 33% at 200kpc. The presence of OVI absorption is azimuthally dependent and occurs between $\pm10-20^{\circ}$ of the galaxy projected major axis and within $\pm30^{\circ}…
Motivated by integral field units (IFUs) on large ground telescopes and proposals for ultraviolet-sensitive space telescopes to probe circumgalactic medium (CGM) emission, we survey the most promising emission lines and how such observations can inform our understanding of the CGM and its relation to galaxy formation. We tie our emission estimates to both HST/COS absorption measurements of ions around $z\approx 0.2$ Milky Way mass halos and models for the density and temperature of gas. We also provide formulas that simplify extending our estimates to other samples and physical scenarios. We f…
We present a study of extended galaxy halo gas through HI and OVI absorption over two decades in projected distance at $z\approx0.2$. The study is based on a sample of $95$ galaxies from a highly complete ($ > 80\%$) survey of faint galaxies ($L > 0.1L_*$) with archival quasar absorption spectra and $53$ galaxies from the literature. A clear anti-correlation is found between HI (OVI) column density and virial radius normalized projected distance, $d/R_{\rm h}$. Strong HI (OVI) absorption systems with column densities greater than $10^{14.0}$ ($10^{13.5}$) cm$^{-2}$ are found for $48$ of $54$ (…

We present a simple model that explains the origin of warm diffuse gas seen primarily as highly ionized absorption line systems in the spectra of background sources. We predict the observed column densities of several highly ionized transitions such as OVI, OVIII, NeVIII, NV, and MgX; and present a unified comparison of the model predictions with absorption lines seen in the Milky Way disk, Milky Way halo, starburst galaxies, the circumgalactic medium and the intergalactic medium at low and high redshifts. We show that diffuse gas seen in such diverse environments can be simultaneously explaine…

Observations reveal massive amounts of OVI around star-forming $L_*$ galaxies, with covering fractions of near unity extending to the host halo's virial radius. This OVI absorption is typically kinematically centered upon photoionized gas, with line widths that are suprathermal and kinematically offset from the galaxy. We discuss various scenarios and whether they could result in the observed phenomenology (cooling gas flows, boundary layers, shocks, virialized gas, photoionized clouds in thermal equilibrium). If predominantly collisionally ionized, as we argue is most probable, the OVI observ…
We present a new Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) absorption-line survey to study halo gas around 16 luminous red galaxies (LRGs) at z=0.21-0.55. The LRGs are selected uniformly with stellar mass Mstar>1e11 Msun and no prior knowledge of the presence/absence of any absorption features. Based on observations of the full Lyman series, we obtain accurate measurements of neutral hydrogen column density N(HI) and find that high-N(HI) gas is common in these massive quiescent halos with a median of <log N(HI)> = 16.6 at projected distances d<~160 kpc. We measure a mean c…
We construct a new analytic phenomenological model for the extended circumgalactic material (CGM) of $L^*$ galaxies. Our model reproduces the OVII/OVIII absorption observations of the Milky Way (MW) and the OVI measurements reported by the COS-Halos and eCGM surveys. The warm/hot gas is in hydrostatic equilibrium in a MW gravitational potential, and we adopt a barotropic equation of state, resulting in a temperature variation as a function of radius. A pressure component with an adiabatic index of $γ=4/3$ is included to approximate the effects of a magnetic field and cosmic rays. We introduce …
Many of the baryons associated with a galaxy reside in its circumgalactic medium (CGM), in a diffuse volume-filling phase at roughly the virial temperature. Much of the oxygen produced over cosmic time by the galaxy's stars also ends up there. The resulting absorption lines in the spectra of UV and X-ray background sources are powerful diagnostics of the feedback processes that prevent more of those baryons from forming stars. This paper presents predictions for CGM absorption lines (O VI, O VII, O VIII, Ne VIII, N V) that are based on precipitation-regulated feedback models, which posit that …
We present a deep search for HI 21-cm emission from the gaseous halo of Messier 31 as part of Project AMIGA, a large program Hubble Space Telescope program to study the circumgalactic medium of the Andromeda galaxy. Our observations with the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telesope target sight lines to 48 background AGNs, more than half of which have been observed in the ultraviolet with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph, with impact parameters $25 \lesssim ρ\lesssim 330$ kpc ($0.1 \lesssim ρ/ R_{\rm vir} \lesssim 1.1$). We do not detect any 21-cm emission toward these AGNs to limits of $N({\rm HI}) …
We explore the multiphase structure of the circumgalactic medium (CGM) probed by synthetic spectra through a cosmological zoom-in galaxy formation simulation. We employ a Bayesian method for modelling a combination of absorption lines to derive physical properties of absorbers with a formal treatment of detections, including saturated systems, and non-detections in a uniform manner. We find that in the lines of sight passing through localized density structures, absorption lines of low, intermediate and high ions are present in the spectrum and overlap in velocity space. Low, intermediate and …
The circumgalactic medium (CGM) remains one of the least constrained components of galaxies and as such has significant potential for advancing galaxy formation theories. In this work, we vary the extragalactic ultraviolet background for a high-resolution cosmological simulation of a Milky Way-like galaxy and examine the effect on the absorption and emission properties of metals in the CGM. We find that a reduced quasar background brings the column density predictions into better agreement with recent data. Similarly, when the observationally derived physical properties of the gas are compared…
We use hydrodynamical simulations of two Milky Way-mass galaxies to demonstrate the impact of cosmic-ray pressure on the kinematics of cool and warm circumgalactic gas. Consistent with previous studies, we find that cosmic-ray pressure can dominate over thermal pressure in the inner 50 kpc of the circumgalactic medium (CGM), creating an overall cooler CGM than that of similar galaxy simulations run without cosmic rays. We generate synthetic sightlines of the simulated galaxies' CGM and use Voigt profile fitting methods to extract ion column densities, Doppler-b parameters, and velocity centroi…
We report Hubble Space Telescope/Cosmic Origins Spectrograph observations of the Ly$α$ emission and interstellar absorption lines in a sample of ten star-forming galaxies at $z\sim0.2$. Selected on the basis of high equivalent width optical emission lines, the sample, dubbed "Green Peas," make some of the best analogs for young galaxies in an early Universe. We detect Ly$α$ emission in all ten galaxies, and 9/10 show double-peaked line profiles suggestive of low HI column density. We measure Ly$α$/H$α$ flux ratios of 0.5-5.6, implying that 5% to 60% of Ly$α$ photons escape the galaxies. These …
Galaxies are surrounded by extended gaseous halos which store significant fractions of chemical elements. These are syntethized by the stellar populations and later ejected into the circumgalactic medium (CGM) by different mechanism, of which supernova feedback is considered one of the most relevant. We explore the properties of this metal reservoir surrounding star-forming galaxies in a cosmological context aiming to investigate the chemical loop between galaxies and their CGM, and the ability of the subgrid models to reproduce observational results. Using cosmological hydrodynamical simulati…
In order to study the circumgalactic medium (CGM) of galaxies we develop an automated pipeline to estimate the optical continuum of quasars and detect intervening metal absorption line systems with a matched kernel convolution technique and adaptive S/N criteria. We process $\sim$ one million quasars in the latest Data Release 16 (DR16) of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and compile a large sample of $\sim$ 160,000 MgII absorbers, together with $\sim$ 70,000 FeII systems, in the redshift range $0.35<z_{abs}<2.3$. Combining these with the SDSS DR16 spectroscopy of $\sim1.1$ million luminous…
Ubiquitous detections of cold/warm gas around galaxies indicate that the circumgalactic medium (CGM) is multiphase and dynamic. Recent state-of-the-art cosmological galaxy simulations have generally underproduced the column density of cold halo gas. We argue that this may be due to a mismatch of spatial resolution in the circumgalactic space and the relevant physical scales at which the cold gas operates. Using semi-analytic calculations and a set of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations, we present a multiphase model of the gaseous halos around galaxies, the circumgalactic mist (CGm). The CGm…
We study the evolution of galaxies and the circumgalactic medium (CGM) through cosmic time by correlating $\sim50,000$ MgII absorbers, tracers of cool gas ($\sim10^{4}$~K), detected in the SDSS quasar spectra with galaxies detected in the DESI Legacy Imaging Surveys. By doing so, we extract the properties of galaxies associated with absorbers from redshift 0.4 to 1.3 with effectively $\sim 15,000$ pairs and explore the covering fraction of MgII absorbers as a function of galaxy type, stellar mass, impact parameter, and redshift. We find that the gas covering fraction increases with stellar mas…
