We study equilibrium as well as dynamical properties of the finite-size fully connected Ising model with a transverse field at the zero temperature. In relation to the equilibrium, we present approximate ground and first excited states that have large overlap -- except near the phase transition point -- with the exact energy eigenstates. For both the approximate and exact eigenstates, we compute the energy gap, concurrence, and geometric measure of quantum entanglement. We observe a good match in the case of energy gap and geometric entanglement between the approximate and exact eigenstates. Whereas, when the system size is large, the concurrence shows a nice agreement only in the paramagnetic phase. In a quench dynamics, we study the time period and the first critical time, which play important roles in the dynamical phase transitions, based on a dynamical order parameter and the Loschmidt rate, respectively. When all the spins are initially polarized in the direction of their mutual interaction, both the time period and critical time diverges logarithmically with the system size at the dynamical critical point. When all the spins are initially in the direction of transverse field, both the time period and critical time exhibit logarithmic or power-law divergences depending on the final field strength. In the case of convergence, we provide estimates for the finite-size scaling and converged value.
We study the onset of eigenstate thermalization in the two-dimensional transverse field Ising model (2D-TFIM) in the square lattice. We consider two non-equivalent Hamiltonians: the ferromagnetic 2D-TFIM and the antiferromagnetic 2D-TFIM in the presence of a uniform longitudinal field. We use full exact diagonalization to examine the behavior of quantum chaos indicators and of the diagonal matrix elements of operators of interest in the eigenstates of the Hamiltonian. A finite size scaling analysis reveals that quantum chaos and eigenstate thermalization occur in those systems whenever the fie…
Much has been learned about universal properties of entanglement entropies in ground states of quantum many-body lattice systems. Here we unveil universal properties of the average bipartite entanglement entropy of eigenstates of the paradigmatic quantum Ising model in one dimension. The leading term exhibits a volume-law scaling that we argue is universal for translationally invariant quadratic models. The subleading term is constant at the critical field for the quantum phase transition and vanishes otherwise (in the thermodynamic limit), i.e., the critical field can be identified from suble…
We study the matrix elements of few-body observables, focusing on the off-diagonal ones, in the eigenstates of the two-dimensional transverse field Ising model. By resolving all symmetries, we relate the onset of quantum chaos to the structure of the matrix elements. In particular, we show that a general result of the theory of random matrices, namely, the value 2 of the ratio of variances (diagonal to off-diagonal) of the matrix elements of Hermitian operators, occurs in the quantum chaotic regime. Furthermore, we explore the behavior of the off-diagonal matrix elements of observables as a fu…
We investigate the relation between the classical ergodicity and the quantum eigenstate thermalization in the fully connected Ising ferromagnets. In the case of spin-1/2, an expectation value of an observable in a single energy eigenstate coincides with the long-time average in the underlying classical dynamics, which is a consequence of the Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin approximation. In the case of spin-1, the underlying classical dynamics is not necessarily ergodic. In that case, it turns out that, in the thermodynamic limit, the statistics of the expectation values of an observable in the ener…
We study eigenstate thermalization and related signatures of quantum chaos in the one-dimensional ferromagnetic transverse-field Ising model with power-law interactions. The presence of long-range interactions allows for a finite-temperature phase transition despite the one-dimensional geometry of the model. Unlike previous studies of eigenstate thermalization in non-disordered systems with finite temperature phase transitions, our model possesses sufficiently many energy eigenstates below the critical energy density to allow us to make a definitive statement about the presence of eigenstate t…
We study the characteristics of thermalizing and non-thermalizing operators in integrable theories as we turn on a non-integrable deformation. Specifically, we show that $σ^z$, an operator that thermalizes in the integrable transverse field Ising model, has mean matrix elements that resemble ETH, but with fluctuations around the mean that are sharply suppressed. This suppression rapidly dwindles as the Ising model becomes non-integrable by the turning on of a longitudinal field. We also construct a non-thermalizing operator in the integrable regime, which slowly approaches the ETH form as the …
Using some modification of the standard fermion technique we derive factorized formula for spin operator matrix elements (form-factors) between general eigenstates of the Hamiltonian of quantum Ising chain in a transverse field of finite length. The derivation is based on the approach recently used to derive factorized formula for Z_N-spin operator matrix elements between ground eigenstates of the Hamiltonian of the Z_N-symmetric superintegrable chiral Potts quantum chain. The obtained factorized formulas for the matrix elements of Ising chain coincide with the corresponding expressions obtain…
We use large-scale exact diagonalization to study the quantum Ising chain in a transverse field with long-range power-law interactions decaying with exponent $α$. We numerically study various probes for quantum chaos and eigenstate thermalization {on} the level of eigenvalues and eigenstates. The level-spacing statistics yields a clear sign towards a Wigner-Dyson distribution and therefore towards quantum chaos across all values of $α>0$. Yet, for $α<1$ we find that the microcanonical entropy is nonconvex. This is due to the fact that the spectrum is organized in energetically separated multip…
With increasing subsystem size and energy, bipartite entanglement entropies of energy eigenstates cross over from the groundstate scaling to a volume law. In previous work, we pointed out that, when strong or weak eigenstate thermalization (ETH) applies, the entanglement entropies of all or, respectively, almost all eigenstates follow a single crossover function. The crossover functions are determined by the subsystem entropy of thermal states and assume universal scaling forms in quantum-critical regimes. This was demonstrated by field-theoretical arguments and the analysis of large systems o…
Eigenstates of fully many-body localized (FMBL) systems can be organized into spin algebras based on quasilocal operators called l-bits. These spin algebras define quasilocal l-bit measurement ($τ^z_i$) and l-bit flip ($τ^x_i$) operators. For a disordered Heisenberg spin chain in the MBL regime we approximate l-bit flip operators by finding them exactly on small windows of systems and extending them onto the whole system by exploiting their quasilocal nature. We subsequently use these operators to represent approximate eigenstates. We then describe a method to calculate products of local obser…
Localisation-protected quantum order extends the idea of symmetry breaking and order in ground states to individual eigenstates at arbitrary energy. Examples include many-body localised static and $π$-spin glasses in Floquet systems. Such order is inherently dynamical and difficult to detect as the order parameter typically varies randomly between different eigenstates, requiring specific superpositions of eigenstates to be targeted by the initial state. We show that two-time correlators overcome this, reflecting the presence or absence of eigenstate order even in fully-mixed, $infinite$ $temp…
The eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH) attempts to bridge the gap between quantum mechanical and statistical mechanical descriptions of isolated quantum systems. Here, we define unbiased measures for how well the ETH works in various regimes, by mapping general interacting quantum systems on regular lattices onto a single particle living on a high-dimensional graph. By numerically analyzing deviations from ETH behavior in the non-integrable Ising model, we propose a quantity that we call the $n$-$weight$ to democratically characterize the average deviations for all operators residing o…
We study a quantum Ising chain with tailored bulk dissipation, which can be mapped onto a non-Hermitian Ashkin-Teller model. By exploiting the Kohmoto-den Nijs-Kadanoff transformation, we further map it to a staggered XXZ spin chain with pure-imaginary anisotropy parameters. This allows us to study the eigenstates of the original Liouvillian in great detail. We show that the steady state in each parity sector is a completely mixed state. The uniqueness of each is proved rigorously. We then study the decay modes on the self-dual line corresponding to the uniform XXZ chain and obtain an exact fo…
The kicked Ising model with both a pulsed transverse and a continuous longitudinal field is studied numerically. Starting from a large transverse field and a state that is nearly an eigenstate, the pulsed transverse field is quenched with a simultaneous enhancement of the longitudinal field. The generation of multipartite entanglement is observed along with a phenomenon akin to quantum resonance when the entanglement does not evolve for certain values of the pulse duration. Away from the resonance, the longitudinal field can drive the entanglement to near maximum values that is shown to agree …
We recently showed [Phys. Rev. Lett. 121, 220602 (2018)] that the average bipartite entanglement entropy of all energy eigenstates of the quantum Ising chain exhibits a universal (for translationally invariant quadratic fermionic models) leading term that scales linearly with the subsystem's volume, while in the thermodynamic limit the first subleading correction does not vanish at the critical field (it only depends on the ratio $f$ between the volume of the subsystem and volume of the system) and vanishes otherwise. Here we show, analytically for bounds and numerically for averages, that the…
I explicitly construct a strong zero mode in the XYZ chain or, equivalently, Majorana wires coupled via a four-fermion interaction. The strong zero mode is an operator that pairs states in different symmetry sectors, resulting in identical spectra up to exponentially small finite-size corrections. Such pairing occurs in the Ising/Majorana fermion chain and possibly in parafermionic systems and strongly disordered many-body localized phases. The proof here shows that the strong zero mode occurs in a clean interacting system, and that it possesses some remarkable structure -- despite being a rat…
The eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH) insists that for nonintegrable systems each energy eigenstate accurately gives microcanonical expectation values for a class of observables. As a mechanism for ETH to hold, we show that the energy eigenstates are superposition of uncountably many quasi eigenstates of operationally defined "time operator", which are thermal for thermodynamic isolated quantum many-body systems and approximately orthogonal in terms of extremely short relaxation time of the fidelity. In this way, our scenario provides a theoretical explanation of ETH.
We investigate the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH) in d+1 dimensional conformal field theories by studying reduced density matrices in energy eigenstates. We show that if local probes of high energy primary eigenstates satisfy ETH, then any finite energy observable with support on a subsystem of finite size satisfies ETH. In two dimensions, we discover that if ETH holds locally, the finite size reduced density matrix of states created by heavy primary operators is well-approximated by a projection to the Virasoro identity block.
The eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH) is a powerful conjecture for understanding how statistical mechanics emerges in a large class of many-body quantum systems. It has also been interpreted in a CFT context, and, in particular, holographic CFTs are expected to satisfy ETH. Recently, it was observed that the ETH condition corresponds to a necessary and sufficient condition for an approximate quantum error correcting code (AQECC), implying the presence of AQECCs in systems satisfying ETH. In this paper, we explore the properties of ETH as an error correcting code and show that there ex…
By means of a Floquet analysis, we study the quantum dynamics of a fully connected Lipkin-Ising ferromagnet in a periodically driven transverse field showing that thermalization in the steady state is intimately connected to properties of the $N\to \infty$ classical Hamiltonian dynamics. When the dynamics is ergodic, the Floquet spectrum obeys a Wigner-Dyson statistics and the system satisfies the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH): Independently of the initial state, local observables relax to the $T=\infty$ thermal value, and Floquet states are delocalized in the Hilbert space. On th…
Dynamical phase transition in quantum many body systems is usually studied by taking it in the ground state and then quenching a parameter to a new value. We investigate here the dynamics when one performs the time evolution of a generic state and observe that the rate function related to the Loschmidt echo shows non-analytic behavior of two types, one related, and the other unrelated, to the appearance of a quantum phase transition. Specifically, we consider a quantum Ising chain in an initial configuration which is a generic superposition of the eigenstates, and follow its dynamics under the…
We study the decoherence dynamics of a quantum Ising lattice of finite size with a transverse dissipative interaction, namely the coupling with the bath is assumed perpendicular to the direction of the spins interaction and parallel to the external transverse magnetic field. In the limit of small transverse field, the eigenstates and spectrum are obtained by a strong coupling expansion, from which we derive the Lindblad equation in the Markovian limit. At temperature lower than the energy gap and for weak dissipation, the decoherence dynamics can be restricted to take only the two degenerate g…
Quantum many-body scar (QMBS) and quantum integrability(QI) have been recognized as two distinct mechanisms for the breakdown of eigenstate thermalization hypothesis(ETH) in an isolated system. In this work, we reveal a smooth route to connect these two ETH-breaking mechanisms in the Ising chain with transverse and longitudinal fields. Specifically, starting from an initial Ising anti-ferromagnetic state, we find that the dynamical system undergoes a smooth non-thermal crossover from QMBS to QI by changing the Ising coupling($J$) and longitudinal field($h$) simultaneously while keeping their r…
The strategy of shortcuts to adiabaticity enables us to realize adiabatic dynamics in finite time. In the counter-diabatic driving approach, an auxiliary Hamiltonian which is called the counter-diabatic Hamiltonian is appended to an original Hamiltonian to cancel out diabatic transitions. The counter-diabatic Hamiltonian is constructed by using the eigenstates of the original Hamiltonian. Therefore, it is in general difficult to construct the counter-diabatic Hamiltonian for quantum many-body systems. Even if the counter-diabatic Hamiltonian for quantum many-body systems is obtained, it is gen…
We consider quantum quenches in integrable models. We argue that the behaviour of local observables at late times after the quench is given by their expectation values with respect to a single representative Hamiltonian eigenstate. This can be viewed as a generalization of the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis to quantum integrable models. We present a method for constructing this representative state by means of a generalized Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz (GTBA). Going further, we introduce a framework for calculating the time dependence of local observables as they evolve towards their stati…
Ising Monte Carlo simulations of the random-field Ising system Fe(0.80)Zn(0.20)F2 are presented for H=10T. The specific heat critical behavior is consistent with alpha approximately 0 and the staggered magnetization with beta approximately 0.25 +- 0.03.
We present a theory for the two kinds of dynamical quantum phase transitions, termed DPT-I and DPT-II, based on a minimal set of symmetry assumptions. In the special case of collective systems with infinite-range interactions, both are triggered by excited-state quantum phase transitions. For quenches below the critical energy, the existence of an additional conserved charge, identifying the corresponding phase, allows for a nonzero value of the dynamical order parameter characterizing DPTs-I, and precludes the main mechanism giving rise to nonanalyticities in the return probability, trademark…
We introduce an algorithm, the Orthogonal Operator Polynomial Expansion (OOPEX), to approximately compute expectation values in energy eigenstates at finite energy density of non-integrable quantum many-body systems with polynomial effort, whereas exact diagonalization (ED) of the Hamiltonian $H$ is exponentially hard. The OOPEX relies on the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis, which conjectures that eigenstate expectation values of physical observables in such systems vary smoothly with the eigenstate energy (and other macroscopic conserved quantities, if any), and computes them through a s…
We explore a transverse-field Ising model that exhibits both spontaneous symmetry-breaking and eigenstate thermalization. Within its ferromagnetic phase, the exact eigenstates of the Hamiltonian of any large but finite-sized system are all Schrödinger cat states: superpositions of states with `up' and `down' spontaneous magnetization. This model exhibits two dynamical phase transitions {\it within} its ferromagnetic phase: In the lowest-temperature phase the magnetization can macroscopically oscillate between up and down. The relaxation of the magnetization is always overdamped in the remainde…
Out of equilibrium phases of matter exhibiting order in individual eigenstates, such as many-body localised spin glasses and discrete time crystals, can be characterised by inherently dynamical quantities such as spatiotemporal correlation functions. In this work, we introduce dynamical potentials which act as generating functions for such correlations and capture eigenstate phases and order. These potentials show formal similarities to their equilibrium counterparts, namely thermodynamic potentials. We provide three representative examples: a disordered, many-body localised XXZ chain showing …
When the two-dimensional random-bond Ising model is represented as a noninteracting fermion problem, it has the same symmetries as an ensemble of random matrices known as class D. A nonlinear sigma model analysis of the latter in two dimensions has previously led to the prediction of a metallic phase, in which the fermion eigenstates at zero energy are extended. In this paper we argue that such behavior cannot occur in the random-bond Ising model, by showing that the Ising spin correlations in the metallic phase violate the bound on such correlations that results from the reality of the Ising …
We present an algorithm to approximate partition functions of 3-body classical Ising models on two-dimensional lattices of arbitrary genus, in the real-temperature regime. Even though our algorithm is purely classical, it is designed by exploiting a connection to topological quantum systems, namely the color codes. The algorithm performance is exponentially better than other approaches which employ mappings between partition functions and quantum state overlaps. In addition, our approach gives rise to a protocol for quantum simulation of such Ising models by simply measuring local observables …
The relevant approximate spontaneous magnetization relations for the simple-cubic and body-centered-cubic Ising lattices have recently been obtained analytically by a novel approach that conflates the Callen--Suzuki identity with a heuristic odd-spin correlation magnetization relation. By exploiting this approach, we study an approximate analytic spontaneous magnetization expression for the face-centered-cubic Ising lattice. We report that the results of the analytic relation obtained in this work are nearly consistent with those derived from the Monte Carlo simulation.
The ground state and zero-temperature magnetization process of the spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg model on two-dimensional triangles-in-triangles lattices is exactly calculated using eigenstates of the smallest commuting spin clusters. Our ground-state analysis of the investigated classical--quantum spin model reveals three unconventional dimerized or trimerized quantum ground states besides two classical ground states. It is demonstrated that the spin frustration is responsible for a variety of magnetization scenarios with up to three or four intermediate magnetization plateaus of either quantum o…
We derive the Eigenstate Thermalization Hypothesis (ETH) from a random matrix Hamiltonian by extending the model introduced by J. M. Deutsch [Phys. Rev. A 43, 2046 (1991)]. We approximate the coupling between a subsystem and a many-body environment by means of a random Gaussian matrix. We show that a common assumption in the analysis of quantum chaotic systems, namely the treatment of eigenstates as independent random vectors, leads to inconsistent results. However, a consistent approach to the ETH can be developed by introducing an interaction between random wave-functions that arises as a re…
We present a numerical analysis of the entropy rate and statistical complexity related to the spin flip dynamics of the 2D Ising Ferromagnet at different temperatures T. We follow an information theoretic approach and test three different entropy estimation algorithms to asses entropy rate and statistical complexity of binary sequences. The latter are obtained by monitoring the orientation of a single spin on a square lattice of side-length L=256 at a given temperature parameter over time. The different entropy estimation procedures are based on the M-block Shannon entropy (a well established …
We establish that the Fourier modes of the magnetization serve as the dynamical eigenmodes for the two-dimensional Ising model at the critical temperature with local spin-exchange moves, i.e., Kawasaki dynamics. We obtain the dynamical scaling properties for these modes, and use them to calculate the time evolution of two dynamical quantities for the system, namely the autocorrelation function and the mean-square deviation of the line magnetizations. At intermediate times $1 \lesssim t \lesssim L^{z_c}$, where $z_c=4-η=15/4$ is the dynamical critical exponent of the model, we find that the lin…
The ground state energy and entropy of the dilute mean field Ising model is computed exactly by a single order parameter. An analogous exact solution is obtained in presence of a magnetic field with random locations. Results allow for a complete understanding of the geography of the associated random graph. In particular we give the size of the giant component (continent) and the number of isolated clusters of connected spins of all given size (islands). We also compute the average number of bonds per spin in the continent and in the islands. Then, we tackle the problem of computing the free e…
The zero-field partition function of two-dimensional nearest neighbor Ising models of square lattices is derived in terms of the generalized hypergeometric series by evaluating the integral in the exact solution of Onsager. An approximate equation for the partition function in terms of Chebyshev polynomials is also provided.
We analyze the out-of-equilibrium dynamics of a quantum particle coupled to local magnetic degrees of freedom that undergo a classical phase transition. Specifically, we consider a two-dimensional tight-binding model that interacts with a background of classical spins in thermal equilibrium, which are subject to Ising interactions and act as emergent, correlated disorder for the quantum particle. Particular attention is devoted to temperatures close to the ferromagnet-to-paramagnet transition. To capture the salient features of the classical transition, namely the effects of long-range correla…
Macroscopic thermalization by unitary time evolution in the weakly perturbed two-dimensional Ising model --- An application of the Roos-Sugimoto-Teufel-Tumulka-Vogel theory
Department of Physics, Gakushuin University(学习院大学物理系)
Using both the exact enumeration method (microcanonical transfer matrix) for a small system (L = 9) and the Wang-Landau Monte Carlo algorithm for large systems to L = 30, we obtain the exact and approximate densities of states g(M,E), as a function of magnetization M and exchange energy E, for the triangular-lattice Ising model. Based on the density of states g(M,E), we investigate the phase transition properties of Yang-Lee zeros for the triangular Ising antiferromagnets and obtain the magnetic exponents at various temperatures.
Full macroscopic thermalization and the formation of Schrödinger's cats by unitary time evolution in the weakly perturbed Ising model - Applications of the Roos-Sugimoto-Teufel-Tumulka-Vogel theory
Isolated quantum systems with quenched randomness exhibit many-body localization (MBL), wherein they do not reach local thermal equilibrium even when highly excited above their ground states. It is widely believed that individual eigenstates capture this breakdown of thermalization at finite size. We show that this belief is false in general and that a MBL system can exhibit the eigenstate properties of a thermalizing system. We propose that localized approximately conserved operators (l$^*$-bits) underlie localization in such systems. In dimensions $d>1$, we further argue that the existing MB…
We apply an improved Taylor expansion method, which is a variational scheme to the Ising model in two dimensions. This method enables us to evaluate the free energy and magnetization in strong coupling regions from the weak coupling expansion, even in the case of a phase transition. We determine the approximate value of the transition point using this scheme. In the presence of an external magnetic field, we find both stable and metastable physical states.
