This is a short survey of lightweight encryption algorithms used in IoT, submitted as an assignment for the graduate course titled "Internet of Things"
The internet of things refers to the network of devices connected to the internet and can communicate with each other. The term things is to refer non-conventional devices that are usually not connected to the internet. The network of such devices or things is growing at an enormous rate. The security and privacy of the data flowing through these things is a major concern. The devices are low powered and the conventional encryption algorithms are not suitable to be employed on these devices. In this correspondence a survey of the contemporary lightweight encryption algorithms suitable for use in the IoT environment has been presented.
As the Internet of Things (IoT) emerges over the next decade, developing secure communication for IoT devices is of paramount importance. Achieving end-to-end encryption for large-scale IoT systems, like smart buildings or smart cities, is challenging because multiple principals typically interact indirectly via intermediaries, meaning that the recipient of a message is not known in advance. This paper proposes JEDI (Joining Encryption and Delegation for IoT), a many-to-many end-to-end encryption protocol for IoT. JEDI encrypts and signs messages end-to-end, while conforming to the decoupled c…
The Internet of Things (IoT) is the collection of everyday smart devices which connect to the Cloud, often through Fog nodes, to transmit and receive information. These everyday devices are distinct from traditional computers because they typically have notable constraints on their RAM, flash memory, and computational power. Due to these constraints, we believe that many of the proposed encryption schemes are too heavyweight to be employed in the IoT. In this paper we present a lightweight, flexible encryption scheme that relies on the one-way information loss property of a secure hash functio…
FL-DABE-BC: A Privacy-Enhanced, Decentralized Authentication, and Secure Communication for Federated Learning Framework with Decentralized Attribute-Based Encryption and Blockchain for IoT Scenarios
Attribute-Based Encryption (ABE) could be an effective cryptographic tool for the secure management of Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices, but its feasibility in the IoT has been under-investigated thus far. This article explores such feasibility for well-known IoT platforms, namely, Intel Galileo Gen 2, Intel Edison, Raspberry Pi 1 Model B, and Raspberry Pi Zero, and concludes that adopting ABE in the IoT is indeed feasible.
Data is central to the Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystem. Most of the current IoT systems are using centralized cloud-based data sharing systems, which will be difficult to scale up to meet the demands of future IoT systems. Involvement of such third-party service provider requires also trust from both sensor owner and sensor data user. Moreover, the fees need to be paid for their services. To tackle both the scalability and trust issues and to automatize the payments, this paper presents a blockchain based proxy re-encryption scheme. The system stores the IoT data in a distributed cloud afte…
Simeck, a lightweight block cipher has been proposed to be one of the encryption that can be employed in the Internet of Things (IoT) applications. Therefore, this paper presents the security of the Simeck32/64 block cipher against side-channel cube attack. We exhibit our attack against Simeck32/64 using the Hamming weight leakage assumption to extract linearly independent equations in key bits. We have been able to find 32 linearly independent equations in 32 key variables by only considering the second bit from the LSB of the Hamming weight leakage of the internal state on the fourth round o…
Smart Medical IoT Security Vulnerabilities: Real-Time MITM Attack Analysis, Lightweight Encryption Implementation, and Practitioner Perceptions in Underdeveloped Nigerian Healthcare Systems
Attribute-Based Encryption (ABE) is an emerging cryptographic technique that allows one to embed a fine-grained access control mechanism into encrypted data. In this paper we propose a novel ABE scheme called SEA-BREW (Scalable and Efficient Abe with Broadcast REvocation for Wireless networks), which is suited for Internet of Things (IoT) and Industrial IoT (IIoT) applications. In contrast to state-of-the-art ABE schemes, ours is capable of securely performing key revocations with a single short broadcast message, instead of a number of unicast messages that is linear with the number of nodes.…
Unauthorized resource access represents a typical security threat in the Internet of things (IoT), while distributed ledger technologies (e.g., blockchain and IOTA) hold great promise to address this threat. Although blockchain-based IoT access control schemes have been the most popular ones, they suffer from several significant limitations, such as high monetary cost and low throughput of processing access requests. To overcome these limitations, this paper proposes a novel IoT access control scheme by combining the fee-less IOTA technology and the Ciphertext-Policy Attribute-Based Encryption…
Existing audio-only hearing-aids are known to perform poorly in noisy situations where overwhelming noise is present. Next-generation audio-visual (lip-reading driven) hearing-aids stand as a major enabler to realise more intelligible audio. However, high data rate, low latency, low computational complexity, and privacy are some of the major bottlenecks to the successful deployment of such advanced hearing aids. To address these challenges, we envision an integration of 5G Cloud-Radio Access Network, Internet of Things (IoT), and strong privacy algorithms to fully benefit from the possibilitie…
Internet of Things (IoT) provides the possibility for milliards of devices throughout the world to communicate with each other, and data is collected autonomously. The big data generated by the devices should be managed securely. Due to security challenges, like malicious nodes, many approaches cannot respond to these concerns. In this paper, a robust hybrid method, including encryption, is used as an efficient approach for resolving the RPL protocol concerns so that the devices are connected securely. Therefore, the proposed DSH-RPL method for securing the RPL protocol comprises the four foll…
Recent study has shown that compressive sensing (CS) based computationally secure scheme using Gaussian or Binomial sensing matrix in resource-constrained IoT devices is vulnerable to ciphertext-only attack. Although the CS-based perfectly secure scheme has no such vulnerabilities, the practical realization of the perfectly secure scheme is challenging, because it requires an additional secure channel to transmit the measurement norm. In this paper, we devise a practical realization of a perfectly secure scheme by concealing energy in which the requirement of an additional secure channel is re…
Security is one of the main issues in Internet of Things (IoT). Encryption plays a curtail role in making these systems secure. Substitution Box (S-Box) has an effective impact in block encryption methods. Due to the restricted resource capacities of IoT nodes, providing a lightweight S-Box is a challenging problem. This paper presents a key-dependent S-Box using Hyperelliptic curve. The proposed S-Box is analytically evaluated using performance criteria including bijection, nonlinearity, strict avalanche effect, and algebraic degree. The evaluation results endorse that the offered S-Box produ…
This paper presents a payload security model to maintain the standards of TLS whilst removing obstacles associated with constrained devices and IoT network protocols. The domain of aquaponics as a smart-farming environment was used to test the novelty with ESP32 edge devices. The impact of privacy on message content illustrated the most appropriate security attribute configurations, followed by time and power analysis to calculate energy consumptions of each scenario. It was concluded that using this tailored payload security model rather than TLS was capable of extending the battery life of c…
IoT is the fastest-growing technology with a wide range of applications in various domains. IoT devices generate data from a real-world environment every second and transfer it to the cloud due to the less storage at the edge site. An outsourced cloud is a solution for handling the storage problem. Users' privacy can be exposed by storing the data on the cloud. Therefore, we propose a Private Data Storage model that stores IoT data on the outsourced cloud with privacy preservation. Fog nodes are used at the edge side for data partition and encryption. Partitioned and encrypted data is aggregat…
Voice is envisioned to be a popular way for humans to interact with Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices. We propose a proximity-based user authentication method (called PIANO) for access control on such voice-powered IoT devices. PIANO leverages the built-in speaker, microphone, and Bluetooth that voice-powered IoT devices often already have. Specifically, we assume that a user carries a personal voice-powered device (e.g., smartphone, smartwatch, or smartglass), which serves as the user's identity. When another voice-powered IoT device of the user requires authentication, PIANO estimates the dis…
The future generation networks: Internet of things (IoT), in combination with the advanced computer vision techniques poses new challenges for securing videos for end-users. The visual devices generally have constrained resources in respects to their low computation power, small memory with limited power supply. Therefore, to facilitate the video security in smart environment, lightweight security schemes are required instead of inefficient existing traditional cryptography algorithms. This research paper provides the solution to overcome such problems. A novel lightweight cipher algorithm is …
Supporting convolutional neural network (CNN) inference on resource-constrained IoT devices in a timely manner has been an outstanding challenge for emerging smart systems. To mitigate the burden on IoT devices, the prevailing solution is to offload the CNN inference task, which is usually composed of billions of operations, to public cloud. However, the "offloading-to-cloud" solution may cause privacy breach while moving sensitive data to cloud. For privacy protection, the research community has resorted to advanced cryptographic primitives and approximation techniques to support CNN inferenc…
With the advent of Internet of Things (IoT) and the increasing use of application-based processors, security infrastructure needs to be examined on some widely-used IoT hardware architectures. Applications in today's world are moving towards IoT concepts as this makes them fast, efficient, modular and future-proof. However, this leads to a greater security risk as IoT devices thrive in an ecosystem of co-existence and interconnection. As a result of these security risks, it is of utmost importance to test the existing cryptographic ciphers on such devices and determine if they are viable in te…
The Internet of Things (IoT) has enabled a wide range of sectors to interact effectively with their consumers in order to deliver seamless services and products. Despite the widespread availability of (IoT) devices and their Internet connectivity, they have a low level of information security integrity. A number of security methods were proposed and evaluated in our research, and comparisons were made in terms of energy and time in the encryption and decryption processes. A ratification procedure is also performed on the devices in the main manager, which is regarded as a full firewall for IoT…
With the increased deployment of IoT and edge devices into commercial and user networks, these devices have become a new threat vector for malware authors. It is imperative to protect these devices as they become more prevalent in commercial and personal networks. However, due to their limited computational power and storage space, especially in the case of battery-powered devices, it is infeasible to deploy state-of-the-art malware detectors onto these systems. In this work, we propose using and extracting features from Markov matrices constructed from opcode traces as a low cost feature for …
Internet of Things (IoT) is a system that consists of a large number of smart devices connected through a network. The number of these devices is increasing rapidly, which creates a massive and complex network with a vast amount of data communicated over that network. One way to protect this data in transit, i.e., to achieve data confidentiality, is to use lightweight encryption algorithms for IoT protocols. However, the design and implementation of such protocols is an error-prone task; flaws in the implementation can lead to devastating security vulnerabilities. These vulnerabilities can be …
In view of the security issues of the Internet of Things (IoT), considered better combining edge computing and blockchain with the IoT, integrating attribute-based encryption (ABE) and attribute-based access control (ABAC) models with attributes as the entry point, an attribute-based encryption and access control scheme (ABE-ACS) has been proposed. Facing Edge-Iot, which is a heterogeneous network composed of most resource-limited IoT devices and some nodes with higher computing power. For the problems of high resource consumption and difficult deployment of existing blockchain platforms, we d…
The Internet of Things (IoT) being a promising technology of the future is expected to connect billions of devices. The increased number of communication is expected to generate mountains of data and the security of data can be a threat. The devices in the architecture are essentially smaller in size and low powered. Conventional encryption algorithms are generally computationally expensive due to their complexity and requires many rounds to encrypt, essentially wasting the constrained energy of the gadgets. Less complex algorithm, however, may compromise the desired integrity. In this paper w…

Near-sensor data analytics is a promising direction for IoT endpoints, as it minimizes energy spent on communication and reduces network load - but it also poses security concerns, as valuable data is stored or sent over the network at various stages of the analytics pipeline. Using encryption to protect sensitive data at the boundary of the on-chip analytics engine is a way to address data security issues. To cope with the combined workload of analytics and encryption in a tight power envelope, we propose Fulmine, a System-on-Chip based on a tightly-coupled multi-core cluster augmented with s…
In many Internet of Things (IoT) applications, data sensed by an IoT device are continuously sent to the server and monitored against a specification. Since the data often contain sensitive information, and the monitored specification is usually proprietary, both must be kept private from the other end. We propose a protocol to conduct oblivious online monitoring -- online monitoring conducted without revealing the private information of each party to the other -- against a safety LTL specification. In our protocol, we first convert a safety LTL formula into a DFA and conduct online monitoring…
The number of IoT devices in use is increasing rapidly and so is the number of IoT applications. As in any new technology, the rapid development means rapid increase in security threats and attack surfaces. IoT security has proven to be challenging throughout the past few years. However, another challenging task is to prevent IoT devices from becoming a tool used by malicious attackers to break into other systems. In this paper, we present a conceptual design in which IoT devices are used as tools in brute-force attacks to break encryption keys of block ciphers. The proposed design shows that …
The Internet of Things (IoT) is rapidly increasing the number of connected devices. This causes new concerns towards solutions for authenticating numerous IoT devices. Most of these devices are resource-constrained. Therefore, the use of long-secret keys, in traditional cryptography schemes can be hard to implement. Also, the key generation, distribution, and storage are very complex. Moreover, the goal of many reported cyber-attacks is accessing the key. Therefore, researchers have shown an increased interest in designing keyless encryption schemes recently. In this report, we are going to ex…
Nowadays, the dataflux shared between IOT systems must be secured from 8-bits to 64-bits processors systems. Several symmetric cryptographic algorithm already exist such as AES (Advanced Encryption Standard), RC4, Blowfish, etc. In this work, we propose an 8-bits encryption algorithm, combining several ideas of standard symmetric encryption algorithms. The aim is to provide a efficient, modular and compact algorithm able to tend to truly random one-time-pad encryption quality even for large data flux. The algorithm combines the implementation of a divergent polynomial with variable coefficient…
Data protection is a severe constraint in the heterogeneous IoT era. This article presents a Hardware-Software Co-Simulation of AES-128 bit encryption and decryption for IoT Edge devices using the Xilinx System Generator (XSG). VHDL implementation of AES-128 bit algorithm is done with ECB and CTR mode using loop unrolled and FSM-based architecture. It is found that AES-CTR and FSM architecture performance is better than loop unrolled architecture with lesser power consumption and area. For performing the Hardware-Software Co-Simulation on Zedboard and Kintex-Ultra scale KCU105 Evaluation Platf…
Arithmetic Coding is an efficient lossless compression scheme applied for many multimedia standards such as JPEG, JPEG2000, H.263, H.264 and H.265. Due to nonlinearity, high error propagation and high error sensitivity of arithmetic coders, many techniques have been developed for extending the usage of arithmetic coders for security as a lightweight joint compression and encryption solution for systems with limited resources. Through this paper, we will describe how to upgrade these techniques to achieve an additional low cost authentication and integrity capabilities with arithmetic coders. C…
