Attribute-Based Encryption (ABE) could be an effective cryptographic tool for the secure management of Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices, but its feasibility in the IoT has been under-investigated thus far. This article explores such feasibility for well-known IoT platforms, namely, Intel Galileo Gen 2, Intel Edison, Raspberry Pi 1 Model B, and Raspberry Pi Zero, and concludes that adopting ABE in the IoT is indeed feasible.
While information-theoretic security is often associated with the one-time pad and quantum key distribution, noisy transport media leave room for classical techniques and even covert operation. Transit times across the public internet exhibit a degree of randomness, and cannot be determined noiselessly by an eavesdropper. We demonstrate the use of these measurements for information-theoretically secure communication over the public internet.
The next Moscow City Duma elections will be held on September 8th with an option of Internet voting. Some source code of the voting system is posted online for public testing. Pierrick Gaudry recently showed that due to the relatively small length of the key, the encryption scheme could be easily broken. This issue has been fixed in the current version of the voting system. In this note we show that the new implementation of the ElGamal encryption system is not semantically secure. We also demonstrate how this newly found security vulnerability can be potentially used for counting the number o…

The future of the Internet will consist of heterogeneously connected devices that expand the world boundaries with physical entities and virtual components. It provides new functionality for related things. This study systematically examines the definition, architecture, essential technologies, and applications of the Internet of Things. We will introduce various definitions of the Internet of Things. Then, it will be disc…
In September 2019, voters for the election at the Parliament of the city of Moscow were allowed to use an Internet voting system. The source code of it had been made available for public testing. In this paper we show two successful attacks on the encryption scheme implemented in the voting system. Both attacks were sent to the developers of the system, and both issues had been fixed after that. The encryption used in this system is a variant of ElGamal over finite fields. In the first attack we show that the used key sizes are too small. We explain how to retrieve the private keys from the pub…
Centralized systems in the Internet of Things---be it local middleware or cloud-based services---fail to fundamentally address privacy of the collected data. We propose an architecture featuring secure multiparty computation at its core in order to realize data processing systems which already incorporate support for privacy protection in the architecture.
The Internet of Things (IoT), the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), and Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) have become essential for our daily lives in contexts such as our homes, buildings, cities, health, transportation, manufacturing, infrastructure, and agriculture. However, they have become popular targets of attacks, due to their inherent limitations which create vulnerabilities. Honeypots and honeynets can prove essential to understand and defend against attacks on IoT, IIoT, and CPS environments by attracting attackers and deceiving them into thinking that they have gained access to the …
This paper is a general survey of all the security issues existing in the Internet of Things (IoT) along with an analysis of the privacy issues that an end-user may face as a consequence of the spread of IoT. The majority of the survey is focused on the security loopholes arising out of the information exchange technologies used in Internet of Things. No countermeasure to the security drawbacks has been analyzed in the paper.
With the rapid development of the Internet of Things, there are many interacting devices and applications. One crucial challenge is how to provide security. Our proposal for a new direction is to create "smart buttons" and collections of them called "smart blankets" as hardware/software security patches rather than software-only patches.
The Internet of Things makes possible to connect each everyday object to the Internet, making computing pervasive like never before. From a security and privacy perspective, this tsunami of connectivity represents a disaster, which makes each object remotely hackable. We claim that, in order to tackle this issue, we need to address a new challenge in security: education.
The internet of things refers to the network of devices connected to the internet and can communicate with each other. The term things is to refer non-conventional devices that are usually not connected to the internet. The network of such devices or things is growing at an enormous rate. The security and privacy of the data flowing through these things is a major concern. The devices are low powered and the conventional encryption algorithms are not suitable to be employed on these devices. In this correspondence a survey of the contemporary lightweight encryption algorithms suitable for use …
The rapid growth of the Internet of Things technology in healthcare domain led to the appearance of many security threats and risks. It became very challenging to provide full protection with the expansion in using sensor objects in medical field, this led to the Internet of Medical Things definition, the security part in IoMT poses a perilous problem that keeps growing, because of the data sensitivity and critical information. The lack of providing a secure environment in IoMT may lead to patients privacy issues, not only leaving the data privacy of the patients at risk but also their lives c…
Internet of Things (IoT), also referred to as the Internet of Objects, is envisioned as a holistic and transformative approach for providing numerous services. The rapid development of various communication protocols and miniaturization of transceivers along with recent advances in sensing technologies offer the opportunity to transform isolated devices into communicating smart things. Smart things, that can sense, store, and even process electrical, thermal, optical, chemical, and other signals to extract user-/environment-related information, have enabled services only limited by human imagi…
This paper analyses the various authentication systems implemented for enhanced security and private re-position of an individual's log-in credentials. The first part of the paper describes the multi-factor authentication (MFA) systems, which, though not applicable to the field of Internet of Things, provides great security to a user's credentials. MFA is followed by a brief description of the working mechanism of interaction of third party clients with private resources over the OAuth protocol framework and a study of the delegation based authentication system in IP-based IoT.
A database is a prime target for cyber-attacks as it contains confidential, sensitive, or protected information. With the increasing sophistication of the internet and dependencies on internet data transmission, it has become vital to be aware of various encryption technologies and trends. It can assist in safeguarding private information and sensitive data, as well as improve the security of client-server communication. Database encryption is a procedure that employs an algorithm to convert data contained in a database into "cipher text," which is incomprehensible until decoded. Homomorphic e…
Internet of Things (IoT) is now omnipresent in all aspects of life and provides a large number of potentially critical services. For this, Internet of Things relies on the data collected by objects. Data integrity is therefore essential. Unfortunately, this integrity is threatened by a type of attack known as False Data Injection Attack. This consists of an attacker who injects fabricated data into a system to modify its behaviour. In this work, we dissect and present a method that uses a Domain-Specific Language (DSL) to generate altered data, allowing these attacks to be simulated and tested…
This paper provides a comprehensive and high level technical overview of BC technology by creating a common language through business and technology about BC. Then an overview of a BC technology, its architectures, classification, challenges, etc. is presented. Finally, some recommendations are provided to re-searchers that will have to be tackled before deploying the next generation of IoT applications based on BC technology.

Building security into this new computing paradigm is a major technical challenge today. However, what are the security problems in IoT that we can solve using existing security principles? And, what are the new problems and challenges in this space that require new security mechanisms? This article summarizes the intellectual similarities and differences between classic information technology security research and IoT security research.
Despite technological advances, most smart objects in the Internet of Things (IoT) cannot be accessed using technologies designed and developed for interacting with powerful Internet servers. IoT use cases involve devices that not only have limited resources, but also they are not always connected to the Internet and are physically exposed to tampering. In this paper, we describe the design, development, and evaluation of a smart contract-based solution that allows end-users to securely interact with smart devices. Our approach enables access control, Thing authentication, and payments in a fu…
The Internet of Things (IoT) is a global ecosystem of information and communication technologies aimed at connecting any type of object (thing), at any time and in any place, to each other and to the Internet. One of the major problems associated with the IoT is maintaining security; the heterogeneous nature of such deployments poses a challenge to many aspects of security, including security testing and analysis. In addition, there is no existing mechanism that performs security testing for IoT devices in different contexts. In this paper, we propose an innovative security testbed framework t…
Authentication forms the gateway to any secure system. Together with integrity, confidentiality and authorization it helps in preventing any sort of intrusions into the system. Up until a few years back password based authentication was the most common form of authentication to any secure network. But with the advent of more sophisticated technologies this form of authentication although still widely used has become insecure. Furthermore, with the rise of 'Internet of Things' where the number of devices would grow manifold it would be infeasible for user to remember innumerable passwords. Ther…

Blockchain is a disruptive technology that has been characterised to be the next big thing and has already gained a broad recognition by experts in diverse fields. In this paper, we consider possible use cases and applications of the blockchain for the consumer electronics (CE) industry and its interplay with the Internet of things. Instead of discussing how the blockchain can revolutionise the supply chain, we focus on how it could be employed for enhancing the security of networked CE devices. This work is motivated by the large number of recent attacks that use easily hackable devices as a …
The integration of multi-access edge computing (MEC) and RAFT consensus makes it feasible to deploy blockchain on trustful base stations and gateways to provide efficient and tamper-proof edge data services for Internet of Things (IoT) applications. However, reducing the latency of storing data on blockchain remains a challenge, especially when an anomalytriggered data flow in a certain area exceeds the block generation speed. This letter proposes an intelligent transaction migration scheme for RAFT-based private blockchain in IoT applications to migrate transactions in busy areas to idle regi…

It also identifies necessary security requirements for secure information sharing based on identified security challenges stated by the industry. The paper then proposes a roadmap for improving security in IIoT which investigates both short-term and long-term solutions for protecting IIoT devices. The short-term solution is mainly based on integrating existing good practices. The paper also outlines a long term solution for protecting IIoT devices with fine-g…
Traditional and lightweight cryptography primitives and protocols are insecure against quantum attacks. Thus, a real-time application using traditional or lightweight cryptography primitives and protocols does not ensure full-proof security. Post-quantum Cryptography is important for the Internet of Things (IoT) due to its security against Quantum attacks. This paper offers a broad literature analysis of post-quantum cryptography for IoT networks, including the challenges and research directions to adopt in real-time applications. The work draws focus towards post-quantum cryptosystems that ar…
Many reports regarding online fraud in varieties media create skepticism for conducting transactions online, especially through an open network such as the Internet, which offers no security whatsoever. Therefore, encryption technology is vitally important to support secure e-commerce on the Internet. Two well-known encryption representing symmetric and asymmetric cryptosystems as well as their applications are discussed in this paper. Encryption is a key technology to secure electronic transactions. However, there are several challenges such as crytoanalysis or code breaker as well as US expo…
Ever since the advent of computing, managing data has been of extreme importance. With innumerable devices getting added to network infrastructure, there has been a proportionate increase in the data which needs to be stored. With the advent of Internet of Things (IOT) it is anticipated that billions of devices will be a part of the internet in another decade. Since those devices will be communicating with each other on a regular basis with little or no human intervention, plethora of real time data will be generated in quick time which will result in large number of log files. Apart from comp…
The Internet of Things (IoT) envisions pervasive, connected, and smart nodes interacting autonomously while offering all sorts of services. Wide distribution, openness and relatively high processing power of IoT objects made them an ideal target for cyber attacks. Moreover, as many of IoT nodes are collecting and processing private information, they are becoming a goldmine of data for malicious actors. Therefore, security and specifically the ability to detect compromised nodes, together with collecting and preserving evidences of an attack or malicious activities emerge as a priority in succe…
The Ukraine power grid cyberattacks remind us that the smart Internet of Things (IoT) can help us control our light-bulbs, but if under attacks it might also take us into darkness. Nowadays, many literatures have tried to address the concerns on IoT security, but few of them take into consideration the sever threats to IoT coming from the advances of quantum computing. As a promising candidate for the future post-quantum cryptography standard, lattice-based cryptography enjoys the advantages of strong security guarantees and high efficiency, which make it extremely suitable for IoT application…
This paper presents a configurable lattice cryptography processor which enables quantum-resistant security protocols for IoT. Efficient sampling architectures, coupled with a low-power SHA-3 core, provide two orders of magnitude energy savings over software. A single-port RAM-based NTT architecture is proposed, which provides ~124k-gate area savings. This is the first ASIC implementation which demonstrates multiple lattice-based protocols proposed for NIST post-quantum standardization.
The Internet of Things (IoT) has enabled a wide range of sectors to interact effectively with their consumers in order to deliver seamless services and products. Despite the widespread availability of (IoT) devices and their Internet connectivity, they have a low level of information security integrity. A number of security methods were proposed and evaluated in our research, and comparisons were made in terms of energy and time in the encryption and decryption processes. A ratification procedure is also performed on the devices in the main manager, which is regarded as a full firewall for IoT…
The Internet of Things paradigm envisions the pervasive interconnection and cooperation of smart things over the current and future Internet infrastructure. The Internet of Things is, thus, the evolution of the Internet to cover the real-world, enabling many new services that will improve people's everyday lives, spawn new businesses and make buildings, cities and transport smarter. Smart things allow indeed for ubiquitous data collection or tracking, but these useful features are also examples of privacy threats that are already now limiting the success of the Internet of Things vision when n…
The Internet of Things (IoT) being a promising technology of the future is expected to connect billions of devices. The increased number of communication is expected to generate mountains of data and the security of data can be a threat. The devices in the architecture are essentially smaller in size and low powered. Conventional encryption algorithms are generally computationally expensive due to their complexity and requires many rounds to encrypt, essentially wasting the constrained energy of the gadgets. Less complex algorithm, however, may compromise the desired integrity. In this paper w…
The Internet of Things (IoT) is rapidly increasing the number of connected devices. This causes new concerns towards solutions for authenticating numerous IoT devices. Most of these devices are resource-constrained. Therefore, the use of long-secret keys, in traditional cryptography schemes can be hard to implement. Also, the key generation, distribution, and storage are very complex. Moreover, the goal of many reported cyber-attacks is accessing the key. Therefore, researchers have shown an increased interest in designing keyless encryption schemes recently. In this report, we are going to ex…
Given the tremendous success of the Internet of Things in interconnecting consumer devices, we observe a natural trend to likewise interconnect devices in industrial settings, referred to as Industrial Internet of Things or Industry 4.0. While this coupling of industrial components provides many benefits, it also introduces serious security challenges. Although sharing many similarities with the consumer Internet of Things, securing the Industrial Internet of Things introduces its own challenges but also opportunities, mainly resulting from a longer lifetime of components and a larger scale of…
A massive current research effort focuses on combining pre-existing 'Intranets' of Things into one Internet of Things. However, this unification is not a panacea; it will expose new attack surfaces and vectors, just as it enables new applications. We therefore urgently need a model of security in the Internet of Things. In this regard, we note that IoT descends directly from pre-existing research (in embedded Internet and pervasive intelligence), so there exist several bodies of related work: security in RFID, sensor networks, cyber-physical systems, and so on. In this paper, we survey the exi…
There is a growing interest from both the academia and industry to employ distributed ledger technology in the Internet-of-Things domain for addressing security-related and performance challenges. Distributed ledger technology enables non-trusted entities to communicate and reach consensus in a fully distributed manner through a cryptographically secure and immutable ledger. However, significant challenges arise mainly related to transaction processing speed and user privacy. This work explores the interplay between Internet-of-Things and distributed ledger technology, analysing the fundamenta…
In the Internet-of-Things, the number of connected devices is expected to be extremely huge, i.e., more than a couple of ten billion. It is however well-known that the security for the Internet-of-Things is still open problem. In particular, it is difficult to certify the identification of connected devices and to prevent the illegal spoofing. It is because the conventional security technologies have advanced for mainly protecting logical network and not for physical network like the Internet-of-Things. In order to protect the Internet-of-Things with advanced security technologies, we propose …
Since the beginning of the Internet thirty years ago, we have witnessed a number of changes in the application of communication technologies. Today, the Internet can be described to a large extent as a ubiquitous infrastructure that is always accessible. After the era of connecting places and connecting people, the Internet of the future will also connect things. The idea behind the resulting Internet of Things is to seamlessly gather and use information about objects of the real world during their entire lifecycle. In this paper, we consider different approaches to technological protection of…
Data protection is a severe constraint in the heterogeneous IoT era. This article presents a Hardware-Software Co-Simulation of AES-128 bit encryption and decryption for IoT Edge devices using the Xilinx System Generator (XSG). VHDL implementation of AES-128 bit algorithm is done with ECB and CTR mode using loop unrolled and FSM-based architecture. It is found that AES-CTR and FSM architecture performance is better than loop unrolled architecture with lesser power consumption and area. For performing the Hardware-Software Co-Simulation on Zedboard and Kintex-Ultra scale KCU105 Evaluation Platf…
The Mirai Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attack exploited security vulnerabilities of Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices and thereby clearly signalled that attackers have IoT on their radar. Securing IoT is therefore imperative, but in order to do so it is crucial to understand the strategies of such attackers. For that purpose, in this paper, a novel IoT honeypot called ThingPot is proposed and deployed. Honeypot technology mimics devices that might be exploited by attackers and logs their behavior to detect and analyze the used attack vectors. ThingPot is the first of its kind, since it …
We present the first BLS12-381 elliptic curve pairing crypto-processor for Internet-of-Things (IoT) security applications. Efficient finite field arithmetic and algorithm-architecture co-optimizations together enable two orders of magnitude energy savings. We implement several countermeasures against timing and power side-channel attacks. Our crypto-processor is programmable to provide the flexibility to accelerate various elliptic curve and pairing-based protocols such as signature aggregation and functional encryption.
With the Internet of Things (IoT), Things are expected to live in different "domains" and "contexts" during their lifetime. Information generated by and associated with Things should be manageable by multiple, diverse stakeholders accordingly. Moreover, the scope of the information related to Things can range from private and confidential to public and auditable. Identification, security, and interoperability in this vivid environment are expected to be challenging. In this paper we discuss how smart contracts and blockchain technologies create the potential for a viable solution. To this end,…
The growth in the number of devices connected to the Internet of Things (IoT) poses major challenges in security. The integrity and trustworthiness of data and data analytics are increasingly important concerns in IoT applications. These are compounded by the highly distributed nature of IoT devices, making it infeasible to prevent attacks and intrusions on all data sources. Adversaries may hijack devices and compromise their data. As a result, reactive countermeasures, such as intrusion detection and resilient analytics, become vital components of security. This paper overviews algorithms for…
Internet of Things (IoT) is the next big evolutionary step in the world of internet. The main intention behind the IoT is to enable safer living and risk mitigation on different levels of life. With the advent of IoT botnets, the view towards IoT devices has changed from enabler of enhanced living into Internet of vulnerabilities for cyber criminals. IoT botnets has exposed two different glaring issues, 1) A large number of IoT devices are accessible over public Internet. 2) Security (if considered at all) is often an afterthought in the architecture of many wide spread IoT devices. In this ar…
Unauthorized resource access represents a typical security threat in the Internet of things (IoT), while distributed ledger technologies (e.g., blockchain and IOTA) hold great promise to address this threat. Although blockchain-based IoT access control schemes have been the most popular ones, they suffer from several significant limitations, such as high monetary cost and low throughput of processing access requests. To overcome these limitations, this paper proposes a novel IoT access control scheme by combining the fee-less IOTA technology and the Ciphertext-Policy Attribute-Based Encryption…

In this work, a deep learning based encryption and decryption network (DeepEDN) is proposed to fulfill the process of encrypting and decrypting the medical image. Specifically, in DeepEDN, the Cycle-Generative Adversarial Network (Cycle-GAN) is employed as the main learning net…
Internet of Things (IoT) is realized by the idea of free flow of information amongst various low power embedded devices that use Internet to communicate with one another. It is predicted that the IoT will be widely deployed and it will find applicability in various domains of life. Demands of IoT have lately attracted huge attention and organizations are excited about the business value of the data that will be generated by the IoT paradigm. On the other hand, IoT have various security and privacy concerns for the end users that limit its proliferation. In this paper we have identified, catego…
The Internet of Things promises a connected environment reacting to and addressing our every need, but based on the assumption that all of our movements and words can be recorded and analysed to achieve this end. Ubiquitous surveillance is also a precondition for most dystopian societies, both real and fictional. How our personal data is processed and consumed in an ever more connected world must imperatively be made transparent, and more effective technical solutions than those currently on offer, to manage personal data must urgently be investigated.
