We study the boundary critical behavior of the three-dimensional Heisenberg universality class, in the presence of a bidimensional surface. By means of high-precision Monte Carlo simulations of an improved lattice model, where leading bulk scaling corrections are suppressed, we prove the existence of a special phase transition, with unusual exponents, and of an extraordinary phase with logarithmically decaying correlations. These findings contrast with naïve arguments on the bulk-surface phase diagram, and allow us to explain some recent puzzling results on the boundary critical behavior of quantum spin models.
The two-dimensional $J$-$J^\prime$ dimerized quantum Heisenberg model is studied on the square lattice by means of (stochastic series expansion) quantum Monte Carlo simulations as a function of the coupling ratio \hbox{$α=J^\prime/J$}. The critical point of the order-disorder quantum phase transition in the $J$-$J^\prime$ model is determined as \hbox{$α_\mathrm{c}=2.5196(2)$} by finite-size scaling for up to approximately $10 000$ quantum spins. By comparing six dimerized models we show, contrary to the current belief, that the critical exponents of the $J$-$J^\prime$ model are not in agreemen…
We present large-scale Monte-Carlo simulations of a two-dimensional (2d) bilayer quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet with random dimer dilution. In contrast to the exotic scaling scenarios found in many other random quantum systems, the quantum phase transition in this system is characterized by a finite-disorder fixed point with power-law scaling. After accounting for strong corrections to scaling, characterized by a leading irrelevant exponent of ω= 0.48, we find universal, i.e., disorder-independent, critical exponents z=1.310(6) and ν=1.16(3). We discuss the consequences of these findings a…
We consider a bilayer quantum spin model with anisotropic intra-layer exchange couplings. By varying the anisotropy, the quantum critical phenomena changes from XY to Heisenberg to Ising universality class, with two, three and one modes respectively becoming gapless simultaneously. We use series expansion methods to calculate the second and third Renyi entanglement entropies when the system is bipartitioned into two parts. Leading area-law terms and subleading entropies associated with corners are separately calculated. We find clear evidence that the logarithmic singularity associated with th…
The three-dimensional quenched random bond diluted $(J_1-J_2)$ quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet is studied on a simple-cubic lattice. Using extensive stochastic series expansion quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we perform very long runs for $L \times L \times L$ lattice up to $L=48$. By employing standard finite-size scaling method, the numerical values of the Néel temperature are determined with high precision as a function of the coupling ratio $r=J_2/J_1$. Based on the estimated critical exponents, we find that the critical behavior of the considered model belongs to the pure classical $3…
We characterize the universal far-from-equilibrium dynamics of the two-dimensional quantum Heisenberg magnet isolated from its environment. For a broad range of initial conditions, we find a long-lived universal prethermal regime characterized by self-similar behavior of spin-spin correlations. We analytically derive the spatial-temporal scaling exponents and find excellent agreement with numerics using phase space methods. The scaling exponents are insensitive to the choice of initial conditions, which include coherent and incoherent spin states with values of total magnetization and energy i…
We improve the theoretical estimates of the critical exponents for the three-dimensional Heisenberg universality class. We find gamma=1.3960(9), nu=0.7112(5), eta=0.0375(5), alpha=-0.1336(15), beta=0.3689(3), and delta=4.783(3). We consider an improved lattice phi^4 Hamiltonian with suppressed leading scaling corrections. Our results are obtained by combining Monte Carlo simulations based on finite-size scaling methods and high-temperature expansions. The critical exponents are computed from high-temperature expansions specialized to the phi^4 improved model. By the same technique we determine…
Equilibrium spatio-temporal correlation functions are central to understanding weak nonequilibrium physics. In certain local one-dimensional classical systems with three conservation laws they show universal features. Namely, fluctuations around ballistically propagating sound modes can be described by the celebrated Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class. Can such universality class be found also in quantum systems? By unambiguously demonstrating that the KPZ scaling function describes magnetization dynamics in the SU(2) symmetric Heisenberg spin chain we show, for the first time, that …
Interacting field theories for systems with a free surface frequently exhibit distinct universality classes of boundary critical behaviors depending on gross surface properties. The boundary condition satisfied by the continuum field theory on some scale may or may not be decisive for the universality class that applies. In many recent papers on boundary field theories it is taken for granted that Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions decide whether the ordinary or special boundary universality class is observed. While true in a certain sense for the Dirichlet boundary condition, this is no…
The critical properties of the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the three-dimensional stacked-triangular lattice are studied by means of a large-scale Monte Carlo simulation in order to get insight into the controversial issue of the criticality of the noncollinear magnets with the $O(3)\times O(2)$ symmetry. The maximum size studied is $384^3$, considerably larger than the sizes studied by the previous numerical works on the model. Availability of such large-size data enables us to examine the detailed critical properties including the effect of corrections to the leading scaling. Strong…
Curie temperature and exponents are studied for the three-dimensional double-exchange model. Applying the O(N) Monte Carlo algorithm, we perform systematic finite-size scaling analyses on the data up to $20^3$ sites. The obtained values of the critical exponents are consistent with those of the Heisenberg universality class, and clearly distinct from the mean-field values.
The thermodynamic limit and boundary energy of the isotropic spin-1 Heisenberg chain with non-diagonal boundary fields are studied. The finite size scaling properties of the inhomogeneous term in the $ T-Q $ relation at the ground state are calculated by the density matrix renormalization group. Based on our findings, the boundary energy of the system in the thermodynamic limit can be obtained from Bethe ansatz equations of a related model with parallel boundary fields. These results can be generalized to the $SU(2)$ symmetric high spin Heisenberg model directly.
The partition function with boundary conditions for various two-dimensional Ising models is examined and previously unobserved properties of conformal invariance and universality are established numerically.
We study s=1/2 Heisenberg spin ladder with the four spin exchange. Combining numerical results with the conformal field theory(CFT), we find a phase transition with central charge c=3/2. Since this system has an SU(2) symmetry, we can conclude that this critical theory is described by k=2 SU(2) Wess-Zumino-Witten model with Z$_2$ symmetry breaking.
It was recently realized that the three-dimensional O($N$) model possesses an extraordinary boundary universality class for a finite range of $N \ge 2$. For a given $N$, the existence and universal properties of this class are predicted to be controlled by certain amplitudes of the normal universality class, where one applies an explicit symmetry breaking field to the boundary. In this Letter, we study the normal universality class for $N = 2, 3$ using Monte Carlo simulations on an improved lattice model and extract these universal amplitudes. Our results are in good agreement with direct Mont…
Asymptotically exact low temperature expansions for the $s=1/2$ Heisenberg XXZ chains with boundaries are implemented by using the boundary conformal field theory. It is found that for $1/2<Δ\leq 1$, ($Δ$, an anisotropic parameter) the boundary terms of the spin susceptibility and the specific heat coefficient show divergent behaviors, as temperature decreases. The degrees of the divergence coincide with those obtained by the Bethe ansatz method at zero temperature. Such low-temperature anomalous behaviors at boundaries are deeply related with finite-temperature corrections of the boundary ent…
We present numerical results for an $S=1/2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a inhomogeneous square lattice with tunable interaction between spins belonging to different plaquettes. Employing Quantum Monte Carlo, we significantly improve on previous results for the the critical point separating singlet-disordered and Néel-ordered phases, and obtain an estimate for the critical exponent $ν$ consistent with the three-dimensional classical Heisenberg universality class. Additionally, we show that a fairly accurate result for the critical point can be obtained from a Contractor Renormalization (CORE)…
We investigate the low-lying excitation of the antiferromagnetic zigzag spin ladder with Möbius boundary condition. Using the Lanczos and Householder diagonalization methods, we calculate the excitation spectrum of the zigzag ladder in the momentum space. We then show that the topological defect generated by the Möbius boundary provides the clear evidence of the single spinon excitation. On the basis of the obtained single-spinon dispersion curve, we analyze the two-spinon scattering states under the usual periodic boundary condition. We further discuss the interaction effect between the spino…
Using Monte Carlo simulations, we compute the spin stiffness of a site-random 3d Heisenberg model with competing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions. Our results for the pure limit yield values of the the critical temperature and the critical exponent $ν$ in excellent agreement with previous high precision studies. In the disordered case, a mixed "chiral" phase is found which may be in the same universality class as 3d Heisenberg spin glasses.
We calculate the ground-state energy of one and two-dimensional spatially inhomogeneous antiferromagnetic Heisenberg models for spins 1/2, 1, 3/2 and 2. Our calculations become possible as a consequence of the recent formulation of density-functional theory for Heisenberg models. The method is similar to spin-density-functional theory, but employs a local-density-type approximation designed specifically for the Heisenberg model, allowing us to explore parameter regimes that are hard to access by traditional methods, and to consider complications that are important specifically for nanomagnetic…
The recent discovery of extraordinary-log universality has generated intense interest in classical and quantum boundary critical phenomena. Despite tremendous efforts, the existence of quantum extraordinary-log universality remains extremely controversial. Here, by utilizing quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we study the quantum edge criticality of a two-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model featuring emergent bulk criticality. On top of an insulating bulk, the open edges experience a Kosterlitz-Thouless-like transition into the superfluid phase when the hopping strength is sufficiently enhanced on ed…
In the vicinity of boundaries the bulk universality class of critical phenomena splits into several boundary universality classes, depending upon whether the tendency to order in the boundary is smaller or larger than in the bulk. For Ising universality class there are five different boundary universality classes: periodic, antiperiodic, free, fixed and mixed (mixture of the last two). In this paper we present the new set of the universal amplitude ratios for the mixed boundary universality class. The results are in perfect agreement with a perturbated conformal field theory scenario proposed …
We present results of extensive quantum Monte Carlo simulations of the three-dimensional (3D) S=1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet. Finite-size scaling of the spin stiffness and the sublattice magnetization gives the critical temperature Tc/J = 0.946 +/- 0.001. The critical behavior is consistent with the classical 3D Heisenberg universality class, as expected. We discuss the general nature of the transition from quantum mechanical to classical (thermal) order parameter fluctuations at a continuous Tc > 0 phase transition.
The planar Heisenberg system with antiferroquadrupolar exchange on 3D stacked triangular lattice is shown to belong to the new "chiral" universality class, predicted for chiral antiferromagnets. The present system, however, displays no such chirality, which, according to the currently widely accepted concept, is supposed to be a key ingredient for the new critical behavior. Our claim that the new universality class should not be limited only to the chiral antiferromagnets is based on a simple mapping between the chiral antiferromagnetic and antiferroquadrupolar systems and supported by actual …
We drive a $d$-dimensional Heisenberg magnet using an anisotropic current. The continuum Langevin equation is analysed using a dynamical renormalization group and numerical simulations. We discover a rich steady-state phase diagram, including a critical point in a new nonequilibrium universality class, and a spatiotemporally chaotic phase. The latter may be `controlled' in a robust manner to target spatially periodic steady states with helical order.
The surface scaling behavior of classical isotropic Heisenberg magnets is investigated by Monte - Carlo methods in d=3 dimensions for various values of the surface - to - bulk coupling ratio J_1/J. For J_1/J <= 1.0 critical behavior according to the ordinary surface universality class is found. New estimates for magnetic surface exponents are presented and compared to older estimates and their theoretical counterparts. For J_1/J >= 2.0 scaling is still valid with effective exponents which depend on J_1/J. The surface structure factor S_1(p,L) is investigated at bulk criticality as function of …
We study two planar square lattice Heisenberg models with explicit dimerization or quadrumerization of the couplings in the form of ladder and plaquette arrangements. We investigate the quantum critical points of those models by means of (stochastic series expansion) quantum Monte Carlo simulations as a function of the coupling ratio $α= J^\prime/J$. The critical point of the order-disorder quantum phase transition in the ladder model is determined as $α_\mathrm{c} = 1.9096(2)$ improving on previous studies. For the plaquette model we obtain $α_\mathrm{c} = 1.8230(2)$ establishing a first benc…
We find a possibility of a weak universality of spin-glass phase transitions in three-dimensional $\pm J$ models. The Ising, the XY and the Heisenberg models seem to undergo finite-temperature phase transitions with a ratio of the critical exponents $γ/ν\sim 2.4$. Evaluated critical exponents may explain corresponding experimental results. The analyses are based upon nonequilibrium relaxation from a paramagnetic state and finite-time scaling.
In this paper we present a Monte Carlo study of the critical behavior of the easy axis anisotropic Heisenberg spin model in two dimensions. Based on the partial knowledge of the zeros of the energy probability distribution we determine with good precision the phase diagram of the model obtaining the critical temperature and exponents for several values of the anisotropy. Our results indicate that the model is in the Ising universality class for any anisotropy.
The ground state of the square lattice bilayer quantum antiferromagnet with nearest ($J_1$) and next-nearest ($J_2$) neighbour intralayer interaction is studied by means of the dimer expansion method up to the 6-th order in the interlayer exchange coupling $J_3$. The phase boundary between the spin-gap phase and the magnetically ordered phase is determined from the poles of the biased Padé approximants for the susceptibility and the inverse energy gap assuming the universality class of the 3-dimensional classical Heisenberg model. For weak frustration, the critical interlayer coupling decrease…
We report on universality in boundary domain growth in cluster aggregation in the limit of maximum concentration. Maximal concentration means that the diffusivity of the clusters is effectively zero and, instead, clusters merge successively in a percolation process, which leads to a sudden growth of the boundary domains. For two-dimensional square lattices of linear dimension L, independent of the models studied here, we find that the maximum of the boundary interface width, the susceptibility $χ$, exhibits the scaling $χ\sim L^γ$ with the universal exponent $γ= 1$. The rapid growth of the bou…
The spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg model with the pair XYZ Heisenberg interaction and quartic Ising interactions is exactly solved by establishing a precise mapping relationship with the corresponding zero-field (symmetric) eight-vertex model. It is shown that the Ising-Heisenberg model with the ferromagnetic Heisenberg interaction exhibits a striking critical behavior, which manifests itself through re-entrant phase transitions as well as continuously varying critical exponents. The changes of critical exponents are in accordance with the weak universality hypothesis in spite of a peculiar singula…
We investigate the thermodynamic properties of the frustrated bilayer quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet at low temperatures in the vicinity of the saturation magnetic field. The low-energy degrees of freedom of the spin model are mapped onto a hard-square gas on a square lattice. We use exact diagonalization data for finite spin systems to check the validity of such a description. Using a classical Monte Carlo method we give a quantitative description of the thermodynamics of the spin model at low temperatures around the saturation field. The main peculiarity of the considered two-dimensional…
We study the spin transport in the quantum Heisenberg spin chain subject to boundary magnetic fields and driven out of equilibrium by Lindblad dissipators. An exact solution is given in terms of matrix product states, which allows us to calculate exactly the spin current for any chain size. It is found that the system undergoes a discontinuous spin-valve-like quantum phase transition from ballistic to sub-diffusive spin current, depending on the value of the boundary fields. Thus, the chain behaves as an extremely sensitive magnonic logic gate operating with the boundary fields as the base ele…
We consider the finite-temperature phase diagram of the $S = 1/2$ frustrated Heisenberg bilayer. Although this two-dimensional system may show magnetic order only at zero temperature, we demonstrate the presence of a line of finite-temperature critical points related to the line of first-order transitions between the dimer-singlet and -triplet regimes. We show by high-precision quantum Monte Carlo simulations, which are sign-free in the fully frustrated limit, that this critical point is in the Ising universality class. At zero temperature, the continuous transition between the ordered bilayer…
We investigate thermal phase transitions to a valence-bond solid phase in SU(N) Heisenberg models with four- or six-body interactions on a square or honeycomb lattice, respectively. In both cases, a thermal phase transition occurs that is accompanied by rotational symmetry breaking of the lattice. We perform quantum Monte Carlo calculations in order to clarify the critical properties of the models. The estimated critical exponents indicate that the universality classes of the square- and honeycomb-lattice cases are identical to those of the classical $XY$ model with a $Z_4$ symmetry-breaking f…
New representation for the generating function of correlators of third components of spins in the XX Heisenberg spin chain is considered in the form given by the fermionic Gaussian path integrals. A part of the discrete anti-commuting integration variables is subjected to ``automorphic'' boundary conditions in respect of imaginary time. The situation when only a part of the integration variables is subjected to the unusual boundary conditions generalizes more conventional ones when ``automorphic'' boundary conditions appear for all sites in the lattice spin models. The results of the functiona…
Perovskites like LaAlO3, (or SrTiO3) undergo displacive structural phase transitions from a cubic crystal to a trigonal (or tertagonal) structure. For many years, the critical exponents in both these types of transitions have been fitted to those of the isotropic three-commponents Heisenberg model. Recent field theoretical accurate calculations showed that this is wrong: the isotropic fixed point of the renormalization group (RG) is unstable, and RG iterations flow either to a `cubic' fixed point or to a fluctuation-driven first-order transition. These distinct flows correspond to two distinct…
This paper studies the critical behavior of the 3d classical $\mathrm{O}(N)$ model with a boundary. Recently, one of us established that upon treating $N$ as a continuous variable, there exists a critical value $N_c > 2$ such that for $2 \leq N < N_c$ the model exhibits a new extraordinary-log boundary universality class, if the symmetry preserving interactions on the boundary are enhanced. $N_c$ is determined by a ratio of universal amplitudes in the normal universality class, where instead a symmetry breaking field is applied on the boundary. We study the normal universality class using the …
Quasiperiodic systems are aperiodic but deterministic, so their critical behavior differs from that of clean systems as well as disordered ones. Quasiperiodic criticality was previously understood only in the special limit where the couplings follow discrete quasiperiodic sequences. Here we consider generic quasiperiodic modulations; we find, remarkably, that for a wide class of spin chains, generic quasiperiodic modulations flow to discrete sequences under a real-space renormalization group transformation. These discrete sequences are therefore fixed points of a \emph{functional} renormalizat…
We discover an example where the dissociation of the Z2 vortices occurs at the second-order phase transition point. We investigate the nature of phase transition in a classical Heisenberg model on a distorted triangular lattice with competing interactions. The order parameter space of the model is SO(3)xZ2. The dissociation of the Z2 vortices which comes from SO(3) and a second-order phase transition with Z2 symmetry breaking occur at the same temperature. We also find that the second-order phase transition belongs to the universality class of the two-dimensional Ising model.
We establish the quantum fluctuations $ΔQ_B^2$ of the charge $Q_B$ accumulated at the boundary of an insulator as an integral tool to characterize phase transitions where a direct gap closes (and reopens), typically occurring for insulators with topological properties. The power of this characterization lies in its capability to treat different kinds of insulators on equal footing; being applicable to transitions between topological and non-topological band, Anderson, and Mott insulators alike. In the vicinity of the phase transition we find a universal scaling $ΔQ_B^2(E_g)$ as function of the…
The entanglement entropy in one dimensional critical systems with boundaries has been associated with the noninteger ground state degeneracy. This quantity, being a characteristic of boundary fixed points, decreases under renormalization group flow, as predicted by the g-theorem. Here, using conformal field theory methods, we exactly calculate the entanglement entropy in the boundary Ising universality class. Our expression can be separated into the well known bulk term and a boundary entanglement term, displaying a universal flow between two boundary conditions, in accordance with the g-theor…
We study entanglement of a pair of qubits and the bipartite entanglement between the pair and the rest within open-ended Heisenberg $XXX$ and XY models. The open boundary condition leads to strong oscillations of entanglements with a two-site period, and the two kinds of entanglements are 180 degree out of phase with each other. The mean pairwise entanglement and ground-state energy per site in the $XXX$ model are found to be proportional to each other. We study the effects of a single bulk impurity on entanglement, and find that there exists threshold values of the relative coupling strength …
Recently, the XXX spin chain with arbitrary boundary fields was successfully solved [1] via the off-diagonal Bethe ansatz method [2]. The correctness and the completeness of this solution were numerically verified by Nepomechie for one choice of the parameterizations [3]. In this paper, we discuss further the completeness of another parameterization of the Bethe ansatz equations and its reduction to the parallel boundary field case. The numerical results show that when the relative angle between the boundary fields turns to zero, both the T-Q relations and the Bethe ansatz equations are reduce…
We investigate a two-dimensional classical $-vector model with a generic nearest-neighbor interaction $W(\bsigma_i\cdot \bsigma_j)$ in the large-N limit, focusing on the finite-temperature transition point at which energy-energy correlations become critical. We show that this transition belongs to the Ising universality class. However, the width of the region in which Ising behavior is observed scales as $1/N^{3/2}$ along the magnetic direction and as 1/N in the thermal direction; outside a crossover to mean-field behavior occurs. This explains why only mean-field behavior is observed for $N=\…
In this work we apply two different real-space renormalization-group (RSRG) approaches to the anisotropic antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 Heisenberg model on the square lattice. Our calculations allow for an approximate evaluation of the $T$ vs. $Δ$ phase-diagram: the results suggest the existence of a critical value of $Δ>0$, at which the critical temperature goes to zero, and the presence of reentrant behavior on the critical line between the ordered and disordered phases. This whole critical line is found to belong to the same universality class as the Ising model. Our results are in accordance …
The antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin systems on the three-leg ladder are investigated. Periodic boundary condition is imposed in the rung direction. The system has an excitation gap for all antiferromagnetic inter-chain coupling ($J_{\perp}>0$). The estimated gap for the strong coupling limit ($J_{\perp}/J_1 \to \infty$) is 0.28$J_1$. Although the interaction is homogeneous and only nearest-neighbor, the ground states of the system are dimerized and break the translational symmetry in the thermodynamic limit. Introducing the next-nearest neighbor coupling ($J_2$), we can see that the system i…
We consider an open isotropic Heisenberg quantum spin chain, coupled at the ends to boundary reservoirs polarized in different directions, which sets up a twisting gradient across the chain. Using a matrix product ansatz, we calculate the exact magnetization profiles and magnetization currents in the nonequilibrium steady steady state of a chain with N sites. The magnetization profiles are harmonic functions with a frequency proportional to the twisting angle θ. The currents of the magnetization components lying in the twisting plane and in the orthogonal direction behave qualitatively differe…
Using the algebraic Bethe ansatz, we derive a matrix product representation of the exact Bethe-ansatz states of the six-vertex Heisenberg chain (either XXX or XXZ and spin-$\frac{1}{2}$) with open boundary conditions. In this representation, the components of the Bethe eigenstates are expressed as traces of products of matrices which act on a tensor product of auxiliary spaces. As compared to the matrix product states of the same Heisenberg chain but with periodic boundary conditions, the dimension of the exact auxiliary matrices is enlarged as if the conserved number of spin-flips considered …
The dynamical responses of a rodlike anisotropic Heisenberg ferromagnet, irradiated by the propagating magnetic field wave, have been studied by Monte Carlo simulation using Metropolis single spin-flip algorithm. A nonequilibrium dynamical phase transition has been observed. The transition temperature has been obtained from the peak position of the variance of the dynamic order parameter plotted as a function of the temperature. The transition has been found to occur at a lower temperature for the higher value of the amplitude of the propagating magnetic field wave. A comprehensive phase bound…
