The $α$ Cen stellar system is the closest neighbour to our Sun. Its main component is a binary composed of two main-sequence stars, one more massive than the Sun and one less massive. The system's bright magnitude led to a wealth of astronomical observations over a long period, making it an appealing testbed for stellar physics. In particular, detection of stellar pulsations in both $α$ Cen A and B has revealed the potential of asteroseismology for determining its fundamental stellar parameters. Asteroseismic studies have also focused on the presence of a convective core in the A component, but as yet without definitive confirmation. Progress in the determination of solar surface abundances and stellar opacities have yielded new input for stellar theoretical models. We investigate their impact on a reference system such as $α$ Cen AB. We seek to confirm the presence of a convective core in $α$ Cen A by analysing the role of different stellar physics and the potential of asteroseismic inverse methods. We present a new series of asteroseismic calibrations carried out using forward approach modelling and including updated chemical mixture and opacities in the models. We then complement our analysis with help of recent asteroseismic diagnostic tools based on inverse methods developed for solar-like stars. The inclusion of an updated chemical mixture -- that is less metal-rich -- appears to reduce the predicted asteroseismic masses of each component. Neither classical asteroseismic indicators such as frequency ratios, nor asteroseismic inversions favour the presence of a convective core in $α$ Cen A. The quality of the observational seismic dataset is the main limiting factor to settle the issue. Implementing new observing strategies to improve the precision on the pulsation frequencies would certainly refine the outcome of asteroseismology for this binary system.
Asteroseismic measurements enable inferences of the underlying stellar structure, such as the density and the speed of sound at various points within the interior of the star. This provides an opportunity to test stellar evolution theory by assessing whether the predicted structure of a star agrees with the measured structure. Thus far, this kind of inverse analysis has only been applied to the Sun and three solar-like main-sequence stars. Here we extend the technique to stars on the subgiant branch, and apply it to one of the best-characterized subgiants of the Kepler mission, HR 7322. The ob…
The bright, nearby binary $α$ Centauri provides an excellent laboratory for testing stellar evolution models, as it is one of the few stellar systems for which we have high-precision classical (mass, radius, luminosity) and asteroseismic ($p$-mode) observations. Stellar models are created and fit to the classical and seismic observations of both stars by allowing for the free variation of convective mixing length parameter $α_{\text{MLT}}$. This system is modeled using five different sets of assumptions about the physics governing the stellar models. There are 31 pairs of tracks (out of ${\sim…
HD\,139614 is known to be a $\sim$14-Myr-old, possibly pre-main-sequence star in the Sco-Cen OB association in the Upper Centaurus-Lupus subgroup, with a slightly warped circumstellar disc containing ring structures hinting at one or more planets. The star's chemical abundance pattern is metal-deficient except for volatile elements, which places it in the $λ$ Boo class and suggests it has recently accreted gas-rich but dust-poor material. We identify seven dipole and four radial pulsation modes among its $δ$ Sct pulsations using the TESS light curve and an échelle diagram. Precision modelling …
The {\emph{Kepler}} space telescope has provided exquisite data to perform asteroseismic analysis on evolved star ensembles. Studying star clusters offers significant insight into stellar evolution and structure, due to having a large number of stars with essentially the same age, distance, and chemical composition. This study analysed eight solar-like oscillating evolved stars that are members of the open cluster NGC 6811 and modelled them for the first time. The fundamental stellar parameters are obtained from the interior model using observational asteroseismic and non-asteroseismic constra…
Asteroseismic parameters allow us to measure the basic stellar properties of field giants observed far across the Galaxy. Most of such determinations are, up to now, based on simple scaling relations involving the large frequency separation, Δν, and the frequency of maximum power, ν$_{max}$. In this work, we implement Δν and the period spacing, ΔP, computed along detailed grids of stellar evolutionary tracks, into stellar isochrones and hence in a Bayesian method of parameter estimation. Tests with synthetic data reveal that masses and ages can be determined with typical precision of 5 and 19 …
Asteroseismology is a powerful tool to infer fundamental stellar properties. The use of these asteroseismic-inferred properties in a growing number of astrophysical contexts makes it vital to understand their accuracy. Consequently, we performed a hare-and-hounds exercise where the hares simulated data for 6 artificial main-sequence stars and the hounds inferred their properties based on different inference procedures. To mimic a pipeline such as that planned for the PLATO mission, all hounds used the same model grid. Some stars were simulated using the physics adopted in the grid, others a di…
Despite the fact that the initial helium abundance is an essential ingredient in modelling solar-type stars, its abundance in these stars remains a poorly constrained observational property. This is because the effective temperature in these stars is not high enough to allow helium ionization, not allowing any conclusions on its abundance when spectroscopic techniques are employed. To this end, stellar modellers resort to estimating the initial helium abundance via a semi-empirical helium-to-heavy element ratio, anchored to the the standard Big Bang nucleosynthesis value. Depending on the choi…
Large-scale analyses of stellar samples comprised of cool, solar-like oscillators now commonly utilize the so-called asteroseismic scaling relations to estimate fundamental stellar properties. In this paper we present a test of the scaling relation for the global asteroseismic parameter $ν_{\rm max}$, the frequency at which a solar-like oscillator presents its strongest observed pulsation amplitude. The classic relation assumes that this characteristic frequency scales with a particular combination of surface gravity and effective temperature that also describes the dependence of the cut-off f…
The advent of space-based photometry missions in the early 21st century enabled the application to asteroseismic data of advanced inference techniques until then restricted to the field of helioseismology. The high quality of the observations, the discovery of mixed modes in evolved solar-like oscillators and the need for an improvement in the determination of stellar fundamental parameters such as mass, radius and age led to the development of sophisticated modelling tools, amongst which seismic inversions play a key role. In this review, we will discuss the existing inversion techniques for …
We have found a rotationally split series of core g-mode triplets and surface p-mode multiplets in a main sequence F star, KIC 9244992. Comparison with models shows that the star has a mass of about 1.45 M$_\odot$, and is at an advanced stage of main sequence evolution in which the central hydrogen abundance mass fraction is reduced to about 0.1. This is the second case, following KIC 11145123, of an asteroseismic determination of the rotation of the deep core and surface of an A-F main-sequence star. We have found, essentially model-independently, that the rotation near the surface, obtained …
The asteroseismic modelling of period spacing patterns from gravito-inertial modes in stars with a convective core is a high-dimensional problem. We utilise the measured period spacing pattern of prograde dipole gravity modes (acquiring $Π_0$), in combination with the effective temperature ($T_{\rm eff}$) and surface gravity ($\log g$) derived from spectroscopy, to estimate the fundamental stellar parameters and core properties of 37 $γ~$Doradus ($γ~$Dor) stars whose rotation frequency has been derived from $\textit{Kepler}$ photometry. We make use of two 6D grids of stellar models, one with s…
Asteroseismology using space-based telescopes is vital to our understanding of stellar structure and evolution. {\textit{CoRoT}}, {\textit{Kepler}}, and {\textit{TESS}} space telescopes have detected large numbers of solar-like oscillating evolved stars. %(kaynaklar, Kallinger, vb ). Solar-like oscillation frequencies have an important role in the determination of fundamental stellar parameters; in the literature, the relations between the two is established by the so-called scaling relations. % These scaling relations are in better agreement with mass and radius of main-sequence stars with la…
About 10 per cent of intermediate- and high-mass dwarf stars are observed to host a strong large-scale magnetic field at their surface, which is thought to be of fossil field origin. However, there are few inferences as to the magnetic field strength and geometry within the deep interiors of stars. Considering that massive stars harbour a convective core whilst on the main sequence, asteroseismology of gravity (g) modes is able to provide constraints on their core masses, yet it has so far not been used to probe the strength of their interior magnetic fields. Here we use asteroseismology to co…
In a series of papers, we have recently demonstrated that it is possible to construct stellar structure models that robustly mimic the stratification of multi-dimensional radiative magneto-hydrodynamic simulations at every time-step of the computed evolution. The resulting models offer a more realistic depiction of the near-surface layers of stars with convective envelopes than parameterizations, such as mixing length theory, do. In this paper, we explore how this model improvement impacts on seismic and non-seismic properties of stellar models across the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram. We show t…
High-precision asteroseismic data provides an excellent opportunity to test theories of stellar evolution and new physics, such as the properties of the dark matter (DM) of the Universe. Here we will show that some models of DM lead to changes in the classical scenario of stellar evolution. The accumulation of DM in the core of low-mass stars reduces their central temperatures and inhibits the formation of small convective cores in 1.1-1.3 Ms stars. We review the asteroseismic constraints that have been set to the characteristics of the DM particles, obtained comparing the oscillations of the …
A set of long and nearly continuous observations of alpha Centauri A should allow us to derive an accurate set of asteroseismic constraints to compare to models, and make inferences on the internal structure of our closest stellar neighbour. We intend to improve the knowledge of the interior of alpha Centauri A by determining the nature of its core. We combined the radial velocity time series obtained in May 2001 with three spectrographs in Chile and Australia: CORALIE, UVES, and UCLES. The resulting combined time series has a length of 12.45 days and contains over 10,000 data points and allow…
The formation of the extended thin disc is the most spectacular event of our Galaxy in the past $\sim8$\,Gyr. To unveil this process, obtaining precise and accurate stellar ages for a large sample of stars is essential although challenging. In this work, we present the asteroseismic age determination of 5306 red giant branch stars using \kepler{} and LAMOST data, with a thorough examination of how the age determination is affected by the choice of different temperature scales and stellar models. Thanks to the high precision of the asteroseismic and spectroscopic parameters of our sample stars,…
We study the impact on stellar age determination by means of grid-based techniques adopting asteroseismic constraints of the uncertainty in the radiative opacity, in the initial helium abundance, in the mixing-length value, in the convective core overshooting, and in the microscopic diffusion efficiency adopted in stellar model computations. We extended our SCEPtER grid (Valle et al. 2014) to include stars with mass in the range [0.8; 1.6] Msun and evolutionary stages from the ZAMS to the central hydrogen depletion. The current typical uncertainty in the observations accounts for 1 sigma stati…
In this paper we study the dynamics of the stellar interior of the early red-giant star KIC 4448777 by asteroseismic inversion of 14 splittings of the dipole mixed modes obtained from {\it Kepler} observations. In order to overcome the complexity of the oscillation pattern typical of red-giant stars, we present a procedure which involves a combination of different methods to extract the rotational splittings from the power spectrum. We find not only that the core rotates faster than the surface, confirming previous inversion results generated for other red giants (Deheuvels et al. 2012,2014), …
The primary science goal of the Kepler Mission is to provide a census of exoplanets in the solar neighborhood, including the identification and characterization of habitable Earth-like planets. The asteroseismic capabilities of the mission are being used to determine precise radii and ages for the target stars from their solar-like oscillations. Chaplin et al. (2010) published observations of three bright G-type stars, which were monitored during the first 33.5 days of science operations. One of these stars, the subgiant KIC 11026764, exhibits a characteristic pattern of oscillation frequencie…
We present the discovery and asteroseismic analysis of a new g-mode hot B subdwarf (sdB) pulsator, EC 21494-7018 (TIC 278659026), monitored in TESS first sector using 120-second cadence. The light curve analysis reveals that EC 21494-7018 is a sdB pulsator counting up to 20 frequencies associated with independent g-modes. The seismic analysis singles out an optimal model solution in full agreement with independent measurements provided by spectroscopy (atmospheric parameters derived from model atmospheres) and astrometry (distance evaluated from Gaia DR2 trigonometric parallax). Several key pa…
Context: The central star of the HR 8799 system is a gamma Doradus-type pulsator. The system harbours four planetary-mass companions detected by direct imaging, and is a good solar system analogue. The masses of the companions are not known accurately, because the estimation depends strongly on the age of the system, which is also not known with sufficient accuracy. Asteroseismic studies of the star might help to better constrain the age of HR 8799. We organized an extensive photometric and multi-site spectroscopic observing campaign for studying the pulsations of the central star. Aims: The a…
The unprecedented quality of the asteroseismic data of solar-type stars made available by space missions such as NASA's Kepler telescope are making it possible to explore stellar interior structures. This offers possibilities of constraining stellar core properties (such as core sizes, abundances, and physics) paving the way for improving the precision of the inferred stellar ages. We employ 16 Cyg A and B as our benchmark stars for an asteroseismic study in which we present a novel approach aimed at selecting from a sample of acceptable stellar models returned from Forward Modelling technique…

Forward asteroseismic modelling plays an important role towards a complete understanding of the physics taking place in deep stellar interiors. With a dynamical mass in the range over which models develop convective cores while in the main sequence, the solar-like oscillator $α$ Centauri A presents itself as an interesting case study. We address the impact of varying the metallicity mixture on the determination of the energy transport process at work in the core of $α$ Centauri A. We find that $\gtrsim$ 70$\%$ of models reproducing the revised dynamical mass of $α$ Centauri A have convective c…
High-quality astrometric, spectroscopic, interferometric and, importantly, asteroseismic observations are available for $α$ Cen A, which is the closest binary star system to earth. Taking all these constraints into account, we study the internal structure of the star by means of theoretical modelling. Using the Aarhus STellar Evolution Code (ASTEC) and the tools of Computational Bayesian Statistics, in particular a Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithm, we perform statistical inferences for the physical characteristics of the star. We find that $α$ Cen A has a probability of approximately 40% of …
In the last decade the quality and the amount of observational asteroseismic data that has been made available by space based missions had a tremendous upgrowth. The determination of asteroseismic parameters to estimate the fundamental physical processes occurring in stars' interiors, can be done today in a way that has never been possible before. In this work we propose to compute the seismic observable $β$, which is a proxy of the phase shift of the acoustic modes propagating in the envelope of the Sun-like stars. This seismic parameter $β$ can be used to identify rapid variation regions usu…
The Sun is unique amongst stars in having a precisely determined age which does not depend on the modelling of stellar evolution. Furthermore, other global properties of the Sun are known to much higher accuracy than for any other star. Also, helioseismology has provided detailed determination of the solar internal structure and rotation. As a result, the Sun plays a central role in the development and test of stellar modelling. Here I discuss solar modelling and its application to tests of asteroseismic techniques for stellar age determination.
Space-based projects are providing a wealth of high-quality asteroseismic data, including frequencies for a large number of stars showing solar-like oscillations. These data open the prospect for precise determinations of key stellar parameters, of particular value to the study of extra-solar planetary systems. Given the quantity of the available and expected data it is important to develop efficient and reliable techniques for analyzing them, including the determination of stellar parameters from the observed frequencies. Here we present the SEEK package developed for the analysis of asterose…
Convective boundary mixing (CBM) is ubiquitous in stellar evolution. It is a necessary ingredient in the models in order to match observational constraints from clusters, binaries and single stars alike. We compute `effective overshoot' measures that reflect the extent of mixing and which can differ significantly from the input overshoot values set in the stellar evolution codes. We use constraints from pressure modes to infer the CBM properties of Kepler and CoRoT main-sequence and subgiant oscillators, as well as in two radial velocity targets (Procyon A and $α$ Cen A). Collectively these ta…
Understanding the physical process responsible for the transport of energy in the core of $α$ Centauri A is of the utmost importance if this star is to be used in the calibration of stellar model physics. Adoption of different parallax measurements available in the literature results in differences in the interferometric radius constraints used in stellar modelling. Further, this is at the origin of the different dynamical mass measurements reported for this star. With the goal of reproducing the revised dynamical mass derived by Pourbaix & Boffin, we modelled the star using two stellar grids …
We present a fully self-consistent, line-by-line differential abundance analysis of $α$ Cen AB based on high-quality HARPS data. Various line lists are used and analysis strategies implemented to improve the reliability of the results. Abundances of 21 species with a typical precision of 0.02-0.03 dex are reported. We find that the chemical composition of the two stars is not scaled solar (e.g. Na and Ni excess, depletion of neutron-capture elements), but that their patterns are strikingly similar, with a mean abundance difference (A - B) with respect to hydrogen of -0.01$\pm$0.04 dex. Much of…
Stellar rotation affects the transport of chemical elements and angular momentum and is therefore a key process during stellar evolution, which is still not fully understood. This is especially true for massive stars, which are important for the chemical enrichment of the universe. It is therefore important to constrain their physical parameters and internal angular momentum distribution to calibrate stellar structure and evolution models. Stellar internal rotation can be probed through asteroseismic studies of rotationally split oscillations but such results are still quite rare, especially f…
The solar-cyle variation of acoustic mode frequencies has a frequency dependence related to the inverse mode inertia. The discrepancy between model predictions and measured oscillation frequencies for solar and solar-type stellar acoustic modes includes a significant frequency-dependent term known as the surface term that is also related to the inverse mode inertia. We parametrize both the surface term and the frequency variations for low-degree solar data from Birmingham Solar-Oscillations Network (BiSON) and medium-degree data from the Global Oscillations Network Group (GONG) using the mode …
The overall evolution of low-mass stars is heavily influenced by the processes occurring in the stellar interior. In particular, mixing processes in convectively unstable zones and overshooting regions affect the resulting observables and main sequence lifetime. We study the effects of different convective boundary definitions and mixing prescriptions in convective cores of low-mass stars, to discriminate the existence, size, and evolutionary stage of the central mixed zone by means of asteroseismology. We implemented the Ledoux criterion for convection in our stellar evolution code, together …
The oscillation frequencies observed in Sun-like stars are susceptible to being shifted by magnetic activity effects. The measured shifts depend on a complex relationship involving the mode type, the field strength and spatial distribution of activity, as well as the inclination angle of the star. Evidence of these shifts is also present in frequency separation ratios which are often used when inferring global properties of stars in order to avoid surface effects. However, one assumption when using frequency ratios for this purpose is that there are no near-surface perturbations that are non-s…
Recent asteroseismic observations by the $\it Kepler$ space mission have revealed the dip fine structure in the period-spacing versus period diagram of rapidly rotating $γ$ Doradus stars. Following the successful reproduction of the dip structure by numerical calculations in previous studies, we present in this paper the physical mechanism of how the dip is formed as a result of the interaction between the gravito-inertial waves in the radiative envelope and the pure inertial waves in the convective core. We analytically describe the wave solutions in both of the radiative envelope and the con…
A vital condition for life on Earth is the steady supply of radiative heat by the Sun. Like all other stars, the Sun generates its emitted energy in its central regions where densities and temperatures are high enough for nuclear fusion processes to take place. Because stellar cores are usually covered by an opaque envelope, most of our knowledge about them and their life-giving nuclear processes comes from theoretical modelling or from indirect observations such as the detection of solar neutrinos and the study of stellar pulsations, respectively. Only in very rare cases, stars may expose the…
Recent spectropolarimetric observations of otherwise ordinary G, K, and M giants revealed localized magnetic strips in the HRD coincident with the regions where the first dredge-up and core He-burning occur. We seek to understand the origin of magnetic fields in such late-type giant stars. In analogy with late-type dwarf stars, we focus primarily on parameters known to influence the generation of magnetic fields in the outer convective envelope. We compute the classical dynamo parameters along the evolutionary tracks of low- and intermediate-mass stars at various metallicities using stellar mo…
HD 46375 is known to host a Saturn-like exoplanet orbiting at 0.04 AU from its host star. Stellar light reflected by the planet was tentatively identified in the 34-day CoRoT run acquired in October-November 2008. We constrain the properties of the magnetic field of HD 46375 based on spectropolarimetric observations with the NARVAL spectrograph at the Pic du Midi observatory. In addition, we use a high-resolution NARVAL flux spectrum to contrain the atmospheric parameters. With these constraints, we perform an asteroseismic analysis and modelling of HD 46375 using the frequencies extracted fro…
