Quantum gravitational effects may affect the large scale dynamics of the universe. Phenomenologically, quantum gravitational effect at large distances can be encoded in an extended uncertainty principle that admits a minimal measurable momentum/energy or a maximal length. This maximal length can be considered as the size of the cosmological horizon today. In this paper we study thermostatistics of an expanding universe as a gaseous system and in the presence of an invariant infrared cutoff. We also compare the thermostatistics of different eras of the evolution of the universe in two classes, Fermions and Bosons.
The idea of relating the infrared and ultraviolet cutoffs is applied to Brans-Dicke theory of gravitation. We find that extended holographic dark energy from the Hubble scale or the particle horizon as the infrared cutoff will not give accelerating expansion. The dynamical cosmological constant with the event horizon as the infrared cutoff is a viable dark energy model.
Within asymptotically safe Quantum Einstein Gravity (QEG), the quantum 4-sphere is discussed as a specific example of a fractal spacetime manifold. The relation between the infrared cutoff built into the effective average action and the corresponding coarse graining scale is investigated. Analyzing the properties of the pertinent cutoff modes, the possibility that QEG generates a minimal length scale dynamically is explored. While there exists no minimal proper length, the QEG sphere appears to be "fuzzy" in the sense that there is a minimal angular separation below which two points cannot be …
In the context of phenomenological models of quantum gravity, it is claimed that the ultraviolet and infrared natural cutoffs can be realized from local deformations of the Hamiltonian systems. In this paper, we scrutinize this hypothesis and formulate a cutoff-regularized Hamiltonian system. The results show that while local deformations are necessary to have cutoffs, they are not sufficient. In fact, the cutoffs can be realized from globally-deformed Hamiltonian systems that are defined on compact symplectic manifolds. By taking the universality of quantum gravity effects into account, we th…
We show that there exists a deep link between the two disciplines of information theory and spectral geometry. This allows us to obtain new results on a well known quantum gravity motivated natural ultraviolet cutoff which describes an upper bound on the spatial density of information. Concretely, we show that, together with an infrared cutoff, this natural ultraviolet cutoff beautifully reduces the path integral of quantum field theory on curved space to a finite number of ordinary integrations. We then show, in particular, that the subsequent removal of the infrared cutoff is safe.
In this paper, inspired by the ultraviolet deformation of the Friedmann-Lema\^ıtre-Robertson-Walker geometry in loop quantum cosmology, we formulate an infrared-modified cosmological model. We obtain the associated deformed Friedmann and Raychaudhuri equations and we show that the late time cosmic acceleration can be addressed by the infrared corrections. As a particular example, we applied the setup to the case of matter dominated universe. This model has the same number of parameters as $Λ$CDM, but a dynamical dark energy generates in the matter dominated era at the late time. According to o…
In this work we consider the entropy-corrected version of interacting holographic dark energy (HDE), in the non-flat universe enclosed by apparent horizon. Two corrections of entropy so-called logarithmic 'LEC' and power-law 'PLEC' in HDE model with apparent horizon as an IR-cutoff are studied. The ratio of dark matter to dark energy densities $u$, equation of state parameter $w_D$ and deceleration parameter $q$ are obtained. We show that the cosmic coincidence is satisfied for both interacting models. By studying the effect of interaction in EoS parameter, we see that the phantom divide may b…
We proposed the generalized holographic dark energy model where infrared cutoff is identified with the combination of the FRW universe parameters: the Hubble rate, particle and future horizons, cosmological constant, the universe life-time (if finite) and their derivatives. It is demonstrated that with the corresponding choice of the cutoff one can map such holographic dark energy to modified gravity or gravity with general fluid. Explicitly, F(R) gravity and general perfect fluid are worked out in detail and corresponding infrared cutoff is found. Using this correspondence, we get realistic i…
The long wavelength physics in a de Sitter region depends on the initial quantum state. While such long wavelength physics is under control for massive fields near the Hartle-Hawking vacuum state, such initial states make unnatural assumptions about initial data outside the region of causal contact of a local observer. We argue that a reasonable approximation to a maximum entropy state, one that makes minimal assumptions outside an observer's horizon volume, is one where a cutoff is placed on a surface bounded by timelike geodesics, just outside the horizon. For sufficiently early times, such …
In this article, I briefly review the status of infrared effects which occur when using inflationary models to calculate initial conditions for a subsequent hot, dense plasma phase. Three types of divergence have been identified in the literature: secular, "time-dependent" logarithms, which grow with time spent outside the horizon; "box-cutoff" logarithms, which encode a dependence on the infrared cutoff when calculating in a finite-sized box; and "quantum" logarithms, which depend on the ratio of a scale characterizing new physics to the scale of whatever process is under consideration, and w…
The extended holographic dark energy model with the Hubble horizon as the infrared cutoff avoids the problem of the circular reasoning of the holographic dark energy model. We show that the infrared cutoff of the extended holographic dark energy model cannot be the Hubble horizon provided that the Brans-Dicke parameter $ω$ satisfies the experimental constraint $ω> 10^4$, and this is proved as a no-go theorem. The no-go theorem also applies to the case in which the dark matter interacts with the dark energy.
The extended holographic dark energy model with the Hubble horizon as the infrared cutoff avoids the problem of the circular reasoning of the holographic dark energy model. Unfortunately, it is hit with the no-go theorem. In this paper, we consider the extended holographic dark energy model with a potential, $V(ϕ)$, for the Brans-Dicke scalar field. With the addition of a potential for the Brans-Dicke scalar field, the extended holographic dark energy model using the Hubble horizon as the infrared cutoff is a viable dark energy model, and the model has the dark energy dominated attractor solut…
Considering the holographic dark energy (HDE) with two different Infrared (IR) cutoffs, we study the evolution of a cyclic universe which avoids the Big-Rip singularity. Our results show that, even in the absence of a mutual interaction between the cosmos sectors, the HDE model with the Hubble radius as IR cutoff can mimics a cosmological constant in the framework of a cyclic cosmology. In addition, we find that both the interacting and non-interacting universes may enter into a cycle of sequential contraction and expansion, if the Granda-Oliveros (GO) cutoff is chosen as the IR cutoff in the …
We explore the effects of considering various infrared (IR) cutoffs, including the particle horizon, Ricci horizon and Granda-Oliveros (GO) cutoffs, on the properties of Tsallis holographic dark energy (THDE) model, proposed inspired by Tsallis generalized entropy formalism \cite{THDE}. Interestingly enough, we find that for the particle horizon as IR cutoff, the obtained THDE model can describe the accelerated universe. This is in contrast to the usual HDE model which cannot lead to an accelerated universe, if one consider the particle horizon as IR cutoff. We also investigate the cosmologica…
We study numerically the first order radiative corrections to the self-energy, in covariant loop quantum gravity. We employ the recently developed 'sl2cfoam-next' spinfoam amplitudes library, and some original numerical methods. We analyze the scaling of the divergence with the infrared cutoff, for which previous analytical estimates provided widely different lower and upper bounds. Our findings suggest that the divergence is approximately linear in the cutoff. We also investigate the role of the Barbero-Immirzi parameter in the asymptotic behavior, the dependence of the scaling on some bounda…
We explore the cosmological models of the late-time universe based on the holographic principle, taking into account the properties of the viscosity of the dark fluid. We use the mathematical formalism of generalized infrared cutoff holographic dark energy, as presented by Nojiri and Odintsov (2017). We consider the Little Rip, the Pseudo Rip, and a bounce exponential model, with two interacting fluids, namely dark energy and dark matter in a spatially-flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universe. Within these models, analytical expressions are obtained for infrared cutoffs in terms of the particl…
We consider the holographic dark energy (HDE) model in the framework of DGP braneworld with Granda-Oliveros infrared (IR) cutoff, $L=(α\dot{H}+βH^2)^{-1/2}$. With this choice for IR cutoff, we are able to derive evolution of the cosmological parameters such as the equation of state and the deceleration parameters, $w$ and $q$, as the functions of the redshift parameter $z$. As far as we know, most previous models of HDE presented in the literatures, do not gives analytically $ω=ω(z)$ and $q=q(z)$. We plot the evolution of these parameters versus $z$ and discuss that the results are compatible …
This article is devoted to the application of the holographic principle to describe Rip brane cosmological models in the presence of a bulk viscosity. We make use of the generalized infrared-cutoff holographic dark energy, introduced by Nojiri and Odintsov We consider various examples: Rip brane cosmology corresponding to the Little Rip case, asymptotic de Sitter theory, and the so-called Big Freeze theory leading to a singularity. Analytical expressions for infrared cutoffs, as well as the particle and the future horizons at the brane, are obtained. The equations for energy conservation on th…
We study the infrared divergences arising from gravitational loops in the standard cosmological perturbation theory. We provide a simple solution to the problem at all orders of cosmological perturbation theory by redefining the perturbation theory in terms of a local observer. We propose to reformulate the standard perturbations in the in-in formalism, and obtain an infrared safe perturbation theory. Our results do not depend on any infrared cutoffs or similar parameters. We then present an explicit example of graviton one-loop corrections, and briefly discuss non-gaussianities.
The type IIB matrix model is a conjectured nonperturbative formulation of superstring theory. Recent studies on the Lorentzian version of the model have shown that only three out of nine spatial directions start to expand after some critical time. On the other hand, due to the unbounded action of the Lorentzian model, one has to introduce infrared (IR) cutoffs in order to make the partition function finite. In this work we investigate whether the effects of the IR cutoffs disappear in the infinite volume limit. For that purpose, we study a simplified model with large matrix size up to $N=256$ …
We present a model of holographic dark energy in which the Infrared cutoff is determined by both the Ricci and the Gauss-Bonnet invariants. Such a construction has the significant advantage that the Infrared cutoff, and consequently the holographic dark energy density, does not depend on the future or the past evolution of the universe, but only on its current features, and moreover it is determined by invariants, whose role is fundamental in gravitational theories. We extract analytical solutions for the behavior of the dark energy density and equation-of-state parameters as functions of the …
We consider the Brans-Dicke (BD) theory of gravity and explore the cosmological implications of the sign-changeable interacting holographic dark energy (HDE) model in the background of Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) universe. As the system's infrared (IR) cutoff, we choose the future event horizon, the Granda-Oliveros (GO) and the Ricci cutoffs. For each cutoff, we obtain the density parameter, the equation of state (EoS) and the deceleration parameter of the system. In case of future event horizon, we find out that the EoS parameter, $w_{D}$, can cross the phantom line, as a result the tran…
We reconsider the matrix model formulation of type IIB superstring theory in (9+1)-dimensional space-time. Unlike the previous proposal in which the Wick rotation was used to make the model well-defined, we regularize the Lorentzian model by introducing infrared cutoffs in both the spatial and temporal directions. Monte Carlo studies reveal that the two cutoffs can be removed in the large-N limit and that the theory thus obtained has no parameters other than one scale parameter. Moreover, we find that three out of nine spatial directions start to expand at some "critical time", after which the…
We consider the decay of a false vacuum in circumstances where the methods suggested by Coleman run into difficulties. We find that in these cases quantum fluctuations play a crucial role. Namely, they naturally induce both an ultraviolet and infrared cutoff scales, determined by the parameters of the classical solution, beyond which this solution cannot be trusted anymore. This leads to the appearance of a broad class of new $O(4)$ invariant instantons, which would have been singular in the absence of an ultraviolet cutoff. We apply our results to a case where the potential is unbounded from …
