It is assumed that the holographic complexities such as the complexity-action (CA) and the complexity-volume (CV) conjecture are dual to complexity in field theory. However, because the definition of the complexity in field theory is still not complete, the confirmation of the holographic duality of the complexity is ambiguous. To improve this situation, we approach the problem from a different angle. We first identify minimal and genuin properties that the filed theory dual of the holographic complexity should satisfy without assuming anything from the circuit complexity or the information theory. Based on these properties, we propose a field theory formula dual to the holographic complexity. Our field theory formula implies that the complexity between certain states in two dimensional CFTs is given by the Liouville action, which is compatible with the path-integral complexity. It gives natural interpretations for both the CA and CV conjectures and identify what their reference states are. When applied to the thermo-field double states, it also gives consistent results with the holographic results in the CA conjecture: both the divergent term and finite term.
We study the planar anti-de Sitter black hole in the p-wave holographic superconductor model. We identify a critical coupling value which determines the type of phase transition. Beyond the horizon, at specific temperatures flat spacetime emerges. Numerical analysis close to these temperatures demonstrates the appearance of a large number of alternating Kasner epochs.

We establish the gravity/fluid correspondence in the nonminimally coupled scalar-tensor theory of gravity. Imposing Petrov-like boundary conditions over the gravitational field, we find that, for a certain class of background metrics, the boundary fluctuations obey the standard Navier-Stokes equation for an incompressible fluid without any external force term in the leading order approximation under the near horizon expansion. That is to say, the scalar field fluctuations does not contribute in the leading order approximation regardless of what kind of boundary condition we impose on it.
Dynamical evolution of thin shells composed by different kinds of degrees of freedom collapsing within asymptotically AdS spaces is explored with the aim of investigating models of holographic thermalization of strongly coupled systems. From the quantum field theory point of view this corresponds to considering different thermal quenches. We carry out a general study of the thermalization time scale using different parameters and space-time dimensions, by calculating renormalized space-like geodesic lengths and rectangular minimal area surfaces as extended probes of thermalization, which are d…
We develop parallels between the holographic renormalization group in the bulk and the Wilsonian renormalization group in the dual field theory. Our philosophy differs from most previous work on the holographic RG; the most notable feature is the key role of multi-trace operators. We work out the forms of various single- and double-trace flows. The key question, `what cutoff on the field theory corresponds to a radial cutoff in the bulk?' is left unanswered, but by sharpening the analogy between the two sides we identify possible directions.
Odd-dimensional quantum field theories (QFTs) can have nonzero trace anomalies if external fields are introduced and some ingredients needed to make Lorentz scalars with appropriate mass dimensions (or weights) are supplied. We have studied a three-dimensional QFT and explicitly computed the trace of the stress tensor using the holographic local renormalization group (RG). We have checked some properties of vector beta functions and the Wess-Zumino consistency condition, however, found the anomalies vanish on fixed points. We clarify what is responsible for the vanishing trace anomalies.
We study the gravity dual of four dimensional pure Yang-Mills theory through D4 branes, as proposed by Witten (holographic QCD). In this holographic QCD, it has been widely believed that the confinement phase in the pure Yang-Mills theory corresponds to the AdS D4 soliton in gravity and the deconfinement phase corresponds to the black D4 brane. We inspect this conjecture carefully and show that the correspondence between the black D4 brane and the deconfinement phase is not correct. Instead, by using a slightly different set up, we find an alternative gravity solution called "localized soliton…
In this paper we study the holographic entanglement entropy in a large N noncommutative gauge field theory with two $θ$ parameters by Ryu-Takayanagi prescription (RT-formula). We discuss what contributions the presence of noncommutativity will make to the entanglement entropy in two different circumstances: 1) a rectangular strip and 2) a cylinder. Since we want to investigate the entanglement entropy only, we will not be discussing the finite temperature case in which the entropy calculated by the area of minimal surface will largely be the thermal part rather than the entanglement part. We f…
In this Essay we address several fundamental issues in cosmology: What is the nature of dark energy and dark matter? Why is the dark sector so different from ordinary matter? Why is the effective cosmological constant non-zero but so incredibly small? What is the reason behind the emergence of a critical acceleration parameter of magnitude $10^{-8} cm/sec^2$ in galactic dynamics? We suggest that the holographic principle is the linchpin in a unified scheme to understand these various issues.
What do simple clocks, simple computers, black holes, space-time foam, and holographic principle have in common? I will show that the physics behind them is inter-related, linking together our concepts of information, gravity, and quantum uncertainty. Thus, the physics that sets the limits to computation and clock precision also yields Hawking radiation of black holes and the holographic principle. Moreover, the latter two strongly imply that space-time undergoes much larger quantum fluctuations than what the folklore suggests --- large enough to be detected with modern gravitational-wave inte…
We study the response of the Sakai-Sugimoto holographic model of large N_c QCD at nonzero temperature to external electric and magnetic fields. In the electric case we find a first-order insulator-conductor transition in both the confining and deconfining phases of the model. In the deconfining phase the conductor is described by the parallel 8-brane-anti-8-brane embedding with a current of quarks and anti-quarks. We compute the conductivity and show that it agrees precisely with a computation using the Kubo formula. In the confining phase we propose a new kind of 8-brane embedding, correspond…
Using "complexity=action" proposal we study the late time growth rate of holographic complexity for nonlinear charged Lifshitz black hole with a single horizon or two horizons. As a toy model, we consider two kinds of such black holes: nonlinear charged Lifshitz black hole and nonlinear logarithmic charged Lifshitz black hole. We find that for the black hole with two horizons, the action growth bound is satisfied. But for the black hole with a single horizon, whether the Lloyd bound is violated depends on the specific value of dimensionless coupling constants $β_{1},β_{2}$, spacetime dimension…
In this paper, we make a systematical and in-depth exploration on the phase structure and the behaviors of butterfly velocity in an Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton-axions (EMDA) model. Depending on the model parameter, there are two kinds of mechanisms driving quantum phase transition (QPT) in this model. One is the infrared (IR) geometry to be renormalization group (RG) unstable, and the other is the strength of lattice deformation leading to some kind of bifurcating solution. We also find a novel QPT in the metal phases. The study on the behavior of the butterfly velocity crossing QPT indicates tha…
In this paper we study the Fisher information metric on the space of the coupling constants on both sides of the duality between non-relativistic dipole field theories and string theory in Schrödinger spacetime. We consider the following setup. In the gauge theory side one can deform a given conformal field theory by a proper scalar operator and compute the quantum information metric via the two-point correlation function between two such operators. On the string side the deformation corresponds to a scalar field probing the background. In the large $N$ limit of the theory the probing can be d…
We take a first step towards a holographic description of a black hole by means of a flow equation. We consider a free theory of multiple scalar fields at finite temperature and study its holographic geometry defined through a free flow of the scalar fields. We find that the holographic metric has the following properties: i) It is an asymptotic Anti-de Sitter (AdS) black brane metric with some unknown matter contribution. ii) It has no coordinate singularity and milder curvature singularity. iii) Its time component decays exponentially at a certain AdS radial slice. We find that the matter sp…
I show that in a general, evolving spacetime, the rate of change of gravitational momentum is related to the difference between the number of degrees of freedom in the bulk and the boundary of a region. This expresses the gravitational field equation in the thermodynamic language which is the natural description, if gravity is an emergent phenomenon. In all static spacetimes, the number of degrees of freedom in the boundary is equal to the number of degrees of freedom in the bulk; i.e., these spacetimes maintain holographic equipartition. It is the departure from holographic equipartition that…
In this paper, we investigate the holographic descriptions of two kinds of black rings, the neutral doubly rotating black ring and the dipole charged black ring. For generic nonextremal black rings, the information of holographic CFT duals, including the central charges and left- and right-moving temperatures, could be read from the thermodynamics at the outer and inner horizons, as suggested in arXiv:1206.2015. To confirm these pictures, we study the extreme black rings in the well-established formalism. We compute the central charges of dual CFTs by doing asymptotic symmetry group analysis i…
We study the properties of the Green's functions of the fermions in charged Gauss-Bonnet black hole. What we want to do is to investigate how the presence of Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant $α$ affects the dispersion relation, which is a characteristic of Fermi or non-Fermi liquid, as well as what properties such a system has, for instance, the Particle-hole (a)symmetry. One important result of this research is that we find for $q=1$, the behavior of this system is different from that of the Landau Fermi liquid and so the system can be candidates for holographic dual of generalized non-Fermi li…
In this note, we describe a holographic CFT construction of states dual to scalar perturbations of the maximally extended three-dimensional AdS-Schwarzschild black hole. The states are constructed by adding sources for a scalar operator to the path integral that constructs the thermofield double state. For a scalar field of arbitrary mass, we provide the general map between sources and scalar field perturbations at linear order. With this, we investigate to what extent it is possible using this construction to produce perturbations localized to one side of the black hole horizon. Our results s…
In AdS/CFT, the fine grained entropy of a boundary region is dual to the area of an extremal surface X in the bulk. It has been proposed that the area of a certain 'causal surface' C - i.e. the 'causal holographic information' (CHI) - corresponds to some coarse-grained entropy in the boundary theory. We construct two kinds of counterexamples that rule out various possible duals, using (1) vacuum rigidity and (2) thermal quenches. This includes the 'one-point entropy' proposed by Kelly and Wall, and a large class of related procedures. Also, any coarse-graining that fixes the geometry of the bu…
Dynamics in AdS spacetimes is characterized by various time-periodicities. The most obvious of these is the time-periodic evolution of linearized fields, whose normal frequencies form integer-spaced ladders as a direct consequence of the structure of representations of the conformal group. There are also explicitly known time-periodic phenomena on much longer time scales inversely proportional to the coupling in the weakly nonlinear regime. We ask what would correspond to these long time periodicities in a holographic CFT, provided that such a CFT reproducing the AdS bulk dynamics in the large…
The AdS/CFT correspondence provides a unique way to study the vortex matter phases in superconductors. We solved the nonlinear equations of motion for the Abelain-Higgs theory living on the AdS$_4$ black hole boundary that is dual to a two dimensional strongly coupled type II superconductor at temperature $T$ with a perpendicular external uniform magnetic field $B_0$. We found the associated two critical magnetic fields, $B_{c1}(T)$ and $B_{c2}(T)$. For $B_0 < B_{c1}(T)$ the magnetic field will be expelled out by the superconductor resembling the Meissner effect and the superconductivity will …
In this paper, taking the large $R$ limit and using the complexity-volume duality, we investigate the holographic complexity growth rate of a field state defined on the universe located at an asymptotical AdS boundary in Gauss-Bonnet gravity and massive gravity, respectively. For the Gauss-Bonnet gravity case, its growth behavior of the state mainly presents three kinds of contributions: one, as a finite term viewed as an interaction term, comes from a conserved charge, the second one is from the spatial volume of the universe and the third one relates the curvature of the horizon in the AdS G…
The vacuum entanglement entropy in quantum field theory provides nonperturbative information about renormalization group flows. Most studies so far have focused on the universal terms, related to the Weyl anomaly in even space-time dimensions, and the sphere free energy $F$ in odd dimensions. In this work we study the entanglement entropy on a sphere of radius $R$ in a large radius limit, for field theories with gravity duals. At large radius the entropy admits a geometric expansion in powers of $R$; the leading term is the well-known area term, and there are subleading contributions. These te…
We study the gauge coupling evolution of a unified theory in the compact Randall-Sundrum model with gauge bosons propagating in the bulk. One-loop corrections in AdS are interpreted in the 4d dual theory as the sum of two contributions: CFT insertions subleading in a 1/N expansion and loops of the additional particles coupled to the CFT. We have calculated the scalar loop correction to the low energy gauge couplings both in scenarios where the GUT symmetry is broken by boundary conditions and with the Higgs mechanism. In each case our results are what expected from the holographic dual theory.
We revisit HHH model in [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 101}, 031601 (2008)] and extend the ansatz of matter fields to being of depending on a spatial dimension except the holographic direction. Despite homogeneous solutions of ground and excited states, especially for the excited states, there also exists solutions where the translational invariance is broken. It is worth mentioning that no periodic sources are assigned to the matter fields, so the translational symmetry is broken spontaneously. We investigate how the new solutions and the condensates of excited states develop with the change of tempe…
Anyons have garnered substantial interest theoretically as well as experimentally. Due to the intricate nature of their interactions, however, even basic notions such as the equation of state for any kind of anyon gas have eluded a profound understanding so far. Using holography as a guiding principle, we propose a general method for an alternative quantization of electromagnetic degrees of freedom in the gravitational dual to obtain an effective physical description of strongly correlated anyonic systems. We then demonstrate the application of this prescription in a toy model of an anyonic fl…
We investigate theories in which gravity arises as a consequence of entropy. We distinguish between two approaches to this idea: holographic gravity, in which Einstein's equation arises from keeping entropy stationary in equilibrium under variations of the geometry and quantum state of a small region, and thermodynamic gravity, in which Einstein's equation emerges as a local equation of state from constraints on the area of a dynamical lightsheet in a fixed spacetime background. Examining holographic gravity, we argue that its underlying assumptions can be justified in part using recent result…
We study the evolution of holographic complexity of pure and mixed states in $1+1$-dimensional conformal field theory following a local quench using both the "complexity equals volume" (CV) and the "complexity equals action" (CA) conjectures. We compare the complexity evolution to the evolution of entanglement entropy and entanglement density, discuss the Lloyd computational bound and demonstrate its saturation in certain regimes. We argue that the conjectured holographic complexities exhibit some non-trivial features indicating that they capture important properties of what is expected to be …
We propose bulk duals for certain coarse-grained entropies of boundary regions. The `one-point entropy' is defined in the conformal field theory by maximizing the entropy in a domain of dependence while fixing the one-point functions. We conjecture that this is dual to the area of the edge of the region causally accessible to the domain of dependence (i.e. the `causal holographic information' of Hubeny and Rangamani). The `future one-point entropy' is defined by generalizing this conjecture to future domains of dependence and their corresponding bulk regions. We show that the future one-point …
The much-discussed \emph{Weak Gravity Conjecture} is interesting and important in both the asymptotically flat and the asymptotically AdS contexts. In the latter case, it is natural to ask what conditions it (and the closely related Cosmic Censorship principle) imposes, via gauge-gravity duality, on the boundary field theory. We find that these conditions take the form of lower bounds on the number of colours in this theory: that is, the WGC and Censorship might (depending on the actual sizes of the bounds) enforce the familiar holographic injunction that this number should be "large". We expl…
We discuss, from a quantum information perspective, recent proposals of Maldacena, Ryu, Takayanagi, van Raamsdonk, Swingle, and Susskind that spacetime is an emergent property of the quantum entanglement of an associated boundary quantum system. We review the idea that the informational principle of minimal complexity determines a dual holographic bulk spacetime from a minimal quantum circuit U preparing a given boundary state from a trivial reference state. We describe how this idea may be extended to determine the relationship between the fluctuations of the bulk holographic geometry and the…
The holographic principle relates (classical) gravitational waves in the bulk to quantum fluctuations and the Weyl anomaly of a conformal field theory on the boundary (the brane). One can thus argue that linear perturbations in the bulk of static black holes located on the brane be related to the Hawking flux and that (brane-world) black holes are therefore unstable. We try to gain some information on such instability from established knowledge of the Hawking radiation on the brane. In this context, the well-known trace anomaly is used as a measure of both the validity of the holographic pictu…
Holographic considerations may provide a glimpse of quantum gravity beyond what is currently accessible by other means. Here we apply holography to inflationary cosmology. We argue that the appropriate holographic bound on the total entropy in the inflationary perturbations is given by the {\it difference} of the area of the apparent horizon in the slow-roll approximation and its exact value near the end of inflation. This implies that the effective field theory of the inflaton weakly coupled to gravity requires modifications below the Planck scale. For a conventional model of inflation this s…
The area law of Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of the black hole suggests that the black hole should have a lower-dimensional holographic description. It has been found recently that a large class of rotating and charged black holes could be holographically described a two-dimensional (2D) conformal field theory (CFT). We show that the universal information of the dual CFT, including the central charges and the temperatures, is fully encoded in the thermodynamics laws of both outer and inner horizons. These laws, characterizing how the black hole responds under the perturbation, allows us to read …
In this paper we initiate the study of holographic quantum liquids in 1+1 dimensions. Since the Landau Fermi liquid theory breaks down in 1+1 dimensions, it is of interest to see what holographic methods have to say about similar models. For theories with a gapless branch, the Luttinger conjecture states that there is an effective description of the physics in terms of a Luttinger liquid which is specified by two parameters. The theory we consider is the defect CFT arising due to a probe D3 brane in the AdS Schwarzschild planar black hole background. We turn on a fundamental string density on …
Floquet states can be realized in quantum systems driven by continuous time-periodic perturbations. It is known that a state known as the Floquet Weyl semimetal can be realized when free Dirac fermions are placed in a rotating electric field. What will happen if strong interaction is introduced to this system? Will the interaction wash out the characteristic features of Weyl semimetals such as the Hall response? Is there a steady state and what is its thermodynamic behavior? We answer these questions using AdS/CFT correspondence in the $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric massless QCD in a rotating …
We investigate the holographic complexity growth rate of a conformal field theory in a FLRW universe. We consider two ways to realize a FLRW spacetime from an Anti-de Sitter Schwarzschild geometry. The first one is obtained by introducing a new foliation of the Schwarzschild geometry such that the conformal boundary takes the FLRW form. The other one is to consider a brane universe moving in the Schwarzschild background. For each case, we compute the complexity growth rate in a closed universe and a flat universe by using both the complexity-volume and complexity-action dualities. We find that…
We investigated the distinction between two kinds of "Complexity equals Action"(CA) conjecture counting methods which are separately provided by Brown $ et\, al. $ and Lehner $et\, al.$ separately. For the late-time CA complexity growth rate, we show that the difference between two counting methods only comes from the boundary term of the segments on the horizon. However, both counting methods give the identical late-time result. Our proof is general, independent of the underlying theories of higher curvature gravity as well as the explicit stationary spacetime background. To be specific, we c…
We continue the study of inflationary fluctuations in Holographic Space Time models of inflation. We argue that the holographic theory of inflation provides a physical context for what is often called dS/CFT. The holographic theory is a quantum theory which, in the limit of a large number of e-foldings, gives rise to a field theory on $S^3$, which is the representation space for a unitary representation of SO(1,4). This is not a conventional CFT, and we do not know the detailed non-perturbative axioms for correlation functions. However, the two- and three-point functions are completely determi…
In applying the gauge-gravity duality to the quark-gluon plasma, one models the plasma using a particular kind of field theory with specified values of the temperature, magnetic field, and so forth. One then assumes that the bulk, an asymptotically AdS black hole spacetime with properties chosen to match those of the boundary field theory, can be embedded in string theory. But this is not always the case: there are field theories with no bulk dual. The question is whether these theories might include those used to study the actual plasmas produced at such facilities as the RHIC experiment or t…
