Building on our recent derivation of the Ward-Schwinger-Dyson equations for the cubic interaction model, we present here the first steps of their resurgent analysis. In our derivation of the WSD equations, we made sure that they had the properties of compatibility with the renormalisation group equations and independence from a regularisation procedure which was known to allow for the comparable studies in the Wess-Zumino model. The interactions between the transseries terms for the anomalous dimensions of the field and the vertex is at the origin of unexpected features, for which the effect of higher order corrections is not precisely known at this stage: we are only at the beginning of the journey to use resurgent methods to decipher non-perturbative effects in quantum field theory.
We provide a rigorous construction of the Schwinger functions for the massive and massless Thirring models. We use the renormalization group approach, controlling its flow through the Ward-Takahashi identities combined with the Schwinger-Dyson equation. The role of the anomalies is discussed.
We develop a system of equations for the propagators and three point functions of the $ϕ^3$ quantum field theory in six dimensions. Inspired from a refinement by Ward on the Schwinger--Dyson equations, the main characteristics of this system are to be formulated purely in terms of renormalized quantities and to give solutions satisfying renormalisation group equations. These properties were difficult to get together, due to the overlapping divergences in the propagator. The renormalisation group equations are an integral part of any efficient resolution scheme of this system and will be instru…
We employ resurgent transseries as algebraic tools to investigate two self-consistent Dyson-Schwinger equations, one in Yukawa theory and one in quantum electrodynamics. After a brief but pedagogical review, we derive fixed point equations for the associated anomalous dimensions and insert a moderately generic log-free transseries ansatz to study the possible strictures imposed. While proceeding in various stages, we develop an algebraic method to keep track of the transseries' coefficients. We explore what conditions must be violated in order to stay clear of fixed point theorems to eschew a …
Based on the path integral formalism, we rederive and extend the transverse Ward-Takahashi identities (which were first derived by Yasushi Takahashi) for the vector and the axial vector currents and simultaneously discuss the possible anomaly for them. Subsequently, we propose a new scheme for writing down and solving the Schwinger-Dyson equation in which the the transverse Ward-Takahashi identity together with the usual (longitudinal) Ward-Takahashi identity are applied to specify the fermion-boson vertex function. Especially, in two dimensional Abelian gauge theory, we show that this scheme …
For certain quantum field theories, the Kreimer-Connes Hopf-algebraic approach to renormalization reduces the Dyson-Schwinger equations to a system of non-linear ordinary differential equations for the expansion coefficients of the renormalized Green's function. We apply resurgent asymptotic analysis to find the trans-series solutions which provide the non-perturbative completion of these formal Dyson-Schwinger expansions. We illustrate the general approach with the concrete example of four dimensional massless Yukawa theory, connecting with the exact functional solution found by Broadhurst an…
In the framework of perturbative quantum field theory a new, universal renormalization condition (called Master Ward Identity) was recently proposed by one of us (M.D.) in a joint paper with F.-M. Boas. The main aim of the present paper is to get a better understanding of the Master Ward Identity by analyzing its meaning in classical field theory. It turns out that it is the most general identity for classical local fields which follows from the field equations. It is equivalent to a generalization of the Schwinger-Dyson Equation and is closely related to the Quantum Action Principle of Lowens…
We analyze the asymptotically free massless scalar $ϕ^3$ quantum field theory in 6 dimensions, using resurgent asymptotic analysis to find the trans-series solutions which yield the non-perturbative completion of the divergent perturbative solutions to the Kreimer-Connes Hopf-algebraic Dyson-Schwinger equations for the anomalous dimension. This scalar conformal field theory is asymptotically free and has a real Lipatov instanton. In the Hopf-algebraic approach we find a trans-series having an intricate Borel singularity structure, with three distinct but resonant non-perturbative terms, each r…
We analyse in this paper the large N limit of the Schwinger-Dyson equations in a rank-3 tensor quantum field theory, which are derived with the help of Ward-Takahashi identities. In order to have a well-defined large N limit, appropriate scalings in powers of N for the various terms present in the action are explicitly found. A perturbative check of our results is done, up to second order in the coupling constant.
This work concerns single-trace correlations of Euclidean multi-matrix models. In the large-N limit we show that Schwinger-Dyson equations imply loop equations and non-anomalous Ward identities. Loop equations are associated to generic infinitesimal changes of matrix variables (vector fields). Ward identities correspond to vector fields preserving measure and action. The former are analogous to Makeenko-Migdal equations and the latter to Slavnov-Taylor identities. Loop equations correspond to leading large-N Schwinger-Dyson equations. Ward identities correspond to 1/N^2 suppressed Schwinger-Dy…
The dynamics of weakly coupled, non-abelian gauge fields at high temperature is non-perturbative if the characteristic momentum scale is of order |k|~ g^2 T. Such a situation is typical for the processes of electroweak baryon number violation in the early Universe. Bodeker has derived an effective theory that describes the dynamics of the soft field modes by means of a Langevin equation. This effective theory has been used for lattice calculations so far. In this work we provide a complementary, more analytic approach based on Dyson-Schwinger equations. Using methods known from stochastic quan…
We treat random rank-$D$ tensor models as $D$-dimensional quantum field theories---tensor field theories (TFT)---and review some of their non-perturbative methods. We classify the correlation functions of complex tensor field theories by boundary graphs, sketch the derivation of the Ward-Takahashi identity and stress its relevance in the derivation of the tower of exact, analytic Schwinger-Dyson equations for all the correlation functions (with connected boundary) of TFTs with quartic pillow-like interactions.
We derive the Ward-Takahashi identity obeyed by the fermion-antifermion-gauge boson vertex in ladder QED in the presence of a constant magnetic field. The general structure in momentum space of the fermion mass operator with external electromagnetic field is discussed. Using it we find the solutions of the ladder WT identity with magnetic field. The consistency of our results with the solutions of the corresponding Schwinger-Dyson equation ensures the gauge invariance of the magnetic field induced chiral symmetry breaking recently found in ladder QED.
Coulomb gauge Yang-Mills theory is considered within the first order formalism. It is shown that the action is invariant under both the standard BRS transform and an additional component. The Ward-Takahashi identity arising from this non-standard transform is shown to be automatically satisfied by the equations of motion.
A proof of Goldstone's theorem is given for the case in which global chiral symmetry is dynamically broken. The proof highlights a needed consistency between the exact Schwinger--Dyson equation for the fermion propagator and the exact Bethe--Salpeter equation for fermion--antifermion bound states. A criterion, based on the Cornwall, Jackiw and Tomboulis effective action for composite operators, is provided for maintaining the consistency when the equations are modified by approximations. For gauge theories in which partial conservation of the axial current (PCAC) should hold, a constraint on t…
Coulomb gauge Yang-Mills theory within the first order formalism is considered with a view to deriving the propagator Dyson-Schwinger equations. The first order formalism is studied with special emphasis on the BRS invariance and it is found that there exists two forms of invariance - invariance under the standard BRS transform and under a second, non-standard transform. The field equations of motion and symmetries are derived explicitly and certain exact relations that simplify the formalism are presented. It is shown that the Ward-Takahashi identity arising from invariance under the non-stan…
We construct a QFT for the Thirring model for any value of the mass in a functional integral approach, by proving that a set of Grassmann integrals converges, as the cutoffs are removed and for a proper choice of the bare parameters, to a set of Schwinger functions verifying the Osterwalder-Schrader axioms. The corresponding Ward Identities have anomalies which are not linear in the coupling and which violate the anomaly non-renormalization property. Additional anomalies are present in the closed equation for the interacting propagator, obtained by combining a Schwinger-Dyson equation with War…
We present the first rigorous construction of the QFT Thirring model, for any value of the mass, in a functional integral approach, by proving that a set of Grassmann integrals converges, as the cutoffs are removed, to a set of Schwinger functions verifying the Osterwalder-Schrader axioms. The massless limit is investigated and it is shown that the Schwinger functions have different properties with respect to the ones of the well known exact solution: the Ward Identities have anomalies violating the anomaly non-renormalization property and additional anomalies, apparently unnoticed before, are…
We study symmetries of quantum field theories involving topologically distinct sectors of the field space. To exhibit these symmetries we define special gauge invariant observables, which we call the $qq$-characters. In the context of the BPS/CFT correspondence, using these observables, we derive an infinite set of Dyson-Schwinger-type relations. These relations imply that the supersymmetric partition functions in the presence of $Ω$-deformation and defects obey the Ward identities of two dimensional conformal field theory and its $q$-deformations. The details will be discussed in the companio…
Within the framework of the Dyson-Schwinger equations in the axial gauge, we study the effect that non-perturbative glue has on the quark propagator. We show that Ward-Takahashi identities, combined with the requirement of matching perturbative QCD at high momentum transfer, guarantee the multiplicative renormalisability of the answer. Technically, the matching with perturbation theory is accomplished by the introduction of a transverse part to the quark-gluon vertex. We show that this transverse vertex is crucial for chiral symmetry breaking, and that massless solutions exist below a critical…
One Lagrangian BRST quantization principle is that of imposing correct Schwinger-Dyson equations through the BRST Ward identities. In this paper we show how to derive the analogous $Sp(2)$-symmetric quantization condition in flat coordinates from an underlying $Sp(2)$-symmetric Schwinger-Dyson BRST symmetry. We also show under what conditions this can be recast in the language of triplectic quantization.
We study the effect of unitary mixing of scalar and vector fields in general $ξ$ gauge. This effect takes place for non-conserved vector currents and $ξ$ gauge generates some additional problems with unphysical scalar field. We obtained solutions of Dyson-Schwinger equations and perfomed the renormalization of full propagators. The key feature of renormalization is the usage of Ward identity, which relates some different Green functions. We found that using Ward identity leads to disappearing of $ξ$-dependence in renormalized matrix element.
We study a special Schwinger-Dyson equation in the context of a pure SU(3) Yang-Mills theory, formulated in the background field method. Specifically, we consider the corresponding equation for the vertex that governs the interaction of two background gluons with a ghost-antighost pair. By virtue of the background gauge invariance, this vertex satisfies a naive Slavnov-Taylor identity, which is not deformed by the ghost sector of the theory. In the all-soft limit, where all momenta vanish, the form of this vertex may be obtained exactly from the corresponding Ward identity. This special result…
A method of Feynman diagrams summation, based on using Schwinger-Dyson equations and Ward identities, is verified by calculating some four-loop diagrams in N=1 supersymmetric electrodynamics, regularized by higher derivatives. In particular, for the considered diagrams correctness of an additional identity for Green functions, which is not reduced to the gauge Ward identity, is proved.
We construct a general Ansatz for the three-particle vertex describing the interaction of one background and two quantum gluons, by simultaneously solving the Ward and Slavnov-Taylor identities it satisfies. This vertex is known to be essential for the gauge-invariant truncation of the Schwinger-Dyson equations of QCD, based on the pinch technique and the background field method. A key step in this construction is the formal derivation of a set of crucial constraints (shown to be valid to all orders), relating the various form factors of the ghost Green's functions appearing in the aforementio…
In two space-time dimensions, we write down the exact and closed Schwinger-Dyson equation for the gauged Thirring model which has been proposed recently by the author. The gauged Thirring model is a natural gauge-invariant extension of the Thirring model and reduces to the Schwinger model (in the Abelian case) in the strong four-fermion coupling limit. The exact SD equation is derived by making use of the transverse Ward-Takahashi identity as well as the usual (longitudinal) Ward-Takahashi identity. Moreover the exact solution of the SD equation for the fermion propagator is obtained together …
We apply a recently developed method to exactly solve the $Φ^3$ matrix model with covariance of a two-dimensional theory, also known as regularised Kontsevich model. Its correlation functions collectively describe graphs on a multi-punctured 2-sphere. We show how Ward-Takahashi identities and Schwinger-Dyson equations lead in a special large-$\mathcal{N}$ limit to integral equations that we solve exactly for all correlation functions. Remarkably, these functions are analytic in the $Φ^3$ coupling constant, although bounds on individual graphs justify only Borel summability. The solved model ar…
Using Schwinger-Dyson equations and Ward identities in N=1 supersymmetric electrodynamics, regularized by higher derivatives, we find, that it is possible to calculate some contributions to the two-point Green function of the gauge field and to the beta-function exactly to all orders of the perturbation theory. The results are applied for the investigation of the anomaly puzzle in the considered theory.
We present the Mathematica package QMeS-Derivation. It derives symbolic functional equations from a given master equation. The latter include functional renormalisation group equations, Dyson-Schwinger equations, Slavnov-Taylor and Ward identities and their modifications in the presence of momentum cutoffs. The modules allow to derive the functional equations, take functional derivatives, trace over field space, apply a given truncation scheme, and do momentum routings while keeping track of prefactors and signs that arise from fermionic commutation relations. The package furthermore contains …
In QCD, the Schwinger mechanism endows the gluons with an effective mass through the dynamical formation of massless bound-state poles that are longitudinally coupled. The presence of these poles affects profoundly the infrared properties of the interaction vertices, inducing crucial modifications to their fundamental Ward identities. Within this general framework, we present a detailed derivation of the non-Abelian Ward identity obeyed by the pole-free part of the three-gluon vertex in the soft-gluon limit, and determine the smoking-gun displacement that the onset of the Schwinger mechanism p…
In this paper we provide the closed equations that satisfy two-point correlation functions of the rank 3 and 4 tensorial group field theory. The formulation of the present problem extends the method used by Grosse and Wulkenhaar in [arXiv 0909.1389] to the tensor case. Ward-Takahashi identities and Schwinger-Dyson equations are combined to establish a nonlinear integral equation for the two-point functions. In the 3D case the solution of this equation is given perturbatively at second order of the coupling constant.
We study the Gauged Thirring Model (also known as Kondo Model) in thermodynamic equilibrium using the Matsubara-Fradkin-Nakanishi formalism. In this formulation, both the temperature and the chemical potential are kept to be nonvanishing. Starting from the field equations, we write down the Dyson-Schwinger-Fradkin equations, the Ward-Fradkin-Takahashi identities, and expressions for the thermodynamical generating functional. We find the partition function of the theory and study some key features of its exact two-point Green Functions, including the Landau-Khalatnikov/Fradkin transformations a…
We study the noncommutative ϕ^4_4-quantum field theory at the self-duality point. This model is renormalisable to all orders as shown in earlier work of us and does not have a Landau ghost problem. Using the Ward identity of Disertori, Gurau, Magnen and Rivasseau, we obtain from the Schwinger-Dyson equation a non-linear integral equation for the renormalised two-point function alone. The non-trivial renormalised four-point function fulfils a linear integral equation with the inhomogeneity determined by the two-point function. These integral equations are the starting point for a perturbative s…
In this article we study the general structure and special properties of the Schwinger-Dyson equation for the gluon propagator constructed with the pinch technique, together with the question of how to obtain infrared finite solutions, associated with the generation of an effective gluon mass. Exploiting the known all-order correspondence between the pinch technique and the background field method, we demonstrate that, contrary to the standard formulation, the non-perturbative gluon self-energy is transverse order-by-order in the dressed loop expansion, and separately for gluonic and ghost con…
This thesis studies matrix field theories, which are a special type of matrix models. First, the different types of applications are pointed out, from (noncommutative) quantum field theory over 2-dimensional quantum gravity up to algebraic geometry with explicit computation of intersection numbers on the moduli space of complex curves. The Kontsevich model, which has proved the Witten conjecture, is the simplest example of a matrix field theory. Generalisations of this model will be studied, where different potentials and the spectral dimension (defined by the asymptotics of the external matri…
