We discuss the essential spectrum of essentially self-adjoint elliptic differential operators of first order and of Laplace type operators on Riemannian vector bundles over geometrically finite orbifolds.
We discuss the behaviour of the bottom of the spectrum of scalar Schrödinger operators under Riemannian coverings of orbifolds. We apply our results to geometrically finite and to conformally compact orbifolds.
In this paper, we construct families of nonisometric hyperbolic orbifolds that contain the same isometry classes of nonflat totally geodesic subspaces. The main tool is a variant of the well-known Sunada method for constructing length-isospectral Riemannian manifolds that handles totally geodesic submanifolds of multiple codimensions simultaneously.
Taking an elementary and straightforward approach, we develop the concept of a regular value for a smooth map f: O -> P between smooth orbifolds O and P. We show that Sard's theorem holds and that the inverse image of a regular value is a smooth full suborbifold of O. We also study some constraints that the existence of a smooth orbifold map imposes on local isotropy groups. As an application, we prove a Borsuk no retraction theorem for compact orbifolds with boundary and some obstructions to the existence of real-valued orbifold maps from local model orbifold charts.
In this paper we introduce the Cheeger-Simons cohomology of a global quotient orbifold. We prove that the Cheeger-Simons cohomology of the orbifold is isomorphic to its Beilinson-Deligne cohomology. Furthermore we construct a string connection (à la Segal) from a global gerbe with connection over the loop orbifold, refining the corresponding differential character.
We introduce orbifolds from the classical point of view, using charts, and present orbifold versions of elementary objects from Algebraic Topology, such as the fundamental group, coverings and Euler characteristic; Differential Topology/Geometry, including orbibundles, differential forms, integration and (equivariant) De Rham cohomology; and Riemannian Geometry, surveying generalizations of classical theorems to this setting.
Motivated by symplectic geometry, we give a detailed account of differential forms and currents on orbifolds with corners, the pull-back and push-forward operations, and their fundamental properties. We work within the formalism where the category of orbifolds with corners is obtained as a localization of the category of étale proper groupoids with corners. Constructions and proofs are formulated in terms of the structure maps of the groupoids, avoiding the use of orbifold charts. The Fréchet space of differential forms on an orbifold and the dual space of currents are shown to be independent …
We construct differential equivariant K-theory of representable smooth orbifolds as a ring valued functor with the usual properties of a differential extension of a cohomology theory. For proper submersions (with smooth fibres) we construct a push-forward map in differential equivariant K-theory. Finally, we construct a non-degenerate intersection pairing with values in C/Z for the subclass of smooth orbifolds which can be written as global quotients by a finite group action. We construct a real subfunctor of our theory, where the pairing restricts to a non-degenerate R/Z-valued pairing.
Informally, an orbifold is a smooth space whose points may have finitely many internal symmetries. Formally, however, the notion of orbifold has been presented in a number of different guises -- from Satake's V-manifolds to Moerdijk and Pronk's proper étale groupoids -- which do not on their face resemble the informal definition. The reason for this divergence between formalism and intuition is that the points of spaces cannot have internal symmetries in traditional, set-level foundations. The extra data of these symmetries must be carried around and accounted for throughout the theory. More d…
This is a long summary of the author's book "D-manifolds and d-orbifolds: a theory of derived differential geometry", available at http://people.maths.ox.ac.uk/~joyce/dmanifolds.html . A shorter survey paper on the book, focussing on d-manifolds without boundary, is arXiv:1206.4207, and readers just wanting a general overview are advised to start there. We introduce a 2-category dMan of "d-manifolds", new geometric objects which are 'derived' smooth manifolds, in the sense of the 'derived algebraic geometry' of Toen and Lurie. They are a 2-category truncation of Spivak's 'derived manifolds' (s…
For a closed Riemannian orbifold $O$, we compare the spectra of the Laplacian, acting on functions or differential forms, to the Neumann spectra of the orbifold with boundary given by a domain $U$ in $O$ whose boundary is a smooth manifold. Generalizing results of several authors, we prove that the metric of $O$ can be perturbed to ensure that the first $N$ eigenvalues of $U$ and $O$ are arbitrarily close to one another. This involves a generalization of the Hodge decomposition to the case of orbifolds with manifold boundary. Using these results, we study the behavior of the Laplace spectrum o…
The concept of orbifolds should unify differential geometry with equivariant homotopy theory, so that orbifold cohomology should unify differential cohomology with proper equivariant cohomology theory. Despite the prominent role that orbifolds have come to play in mathematics and mathematical physics, especially in string theory, the formulation of a general theory of orbifolds reflecting this unification has remained an open problem. Here we present a natural theory argued to achieve this. We give both a general abstract axiomatization in higher topos theory, as well as concrete models for or…
This note is based on a talk given at the 2019 ISAAC Congress in Aveiro, Portugal. We give an expository account of joint work with Daniele Alessandrini and Gye-Seon Lee on Hitchin components for orbifold groups (arXiv:1811.05366), recasting part of it in the language of analytic orbi-curves. This reduces the computation of the dimension of the Hitchin component for orbifold groups to an application of the orbifold Riemann-Roch theorem.
We describe a bicategory $(\mathcal{R}ed\,\mathcal{O}rb)$ of reduced orbifolds in the framework of classical differential geometry (i.e. without any explicit reference to notions of Lie groupoids or differentiable stacks, but only using orbifold atlases, local lifts and changes of charts). In order to construct such a bicategory, we first define a $2$-category $(\mathcal{R}ed\,\mathcal{A}tl)$ whose objects are reduced orbifold atlases (on any paracompact, second countable, Hausdorff topological space). The definition of morphisms is obtained as a slight modification of a definition by A. Pohl,…

In this paper, as the second in our series of papers on differential geometry of microlinear Frolicher spaces, we study differenital forms. The principal result is that the exterior differentiation is uniquely determined geometrically, just as grad (ient), div (ergence) and rot (ation) are uniquely determined geometrically or physically in classical vector calculus. This infinitesimal characterization of exterior differentiation has been completely missing in orthodox differential geometry.

We prove inverse spectral results for differential operators on manifolds and orbifolds invariant under a torus action. These inverse spectral results involve the asymptotic equivariant spectrum, which is the spectrum itself together with "very large" weights of the torus action on eigenspaces. More precisely, we show that the asymptotic equivariant spectrum of the Laplace operator of any toric metric on a generic toric orbifold determines the equivariant biholomorphism class of the orbifold; we also show that the asymptotic equivariant spectrum of a T^n-invariant Schrodinger operator on R^n d…
We present two families of exterior differential systems (EDS) for non-isometric embeddings of orthonormal frame bundles over Riemannian spaces of dimension q = 2, 3, 4, 5.... into orthonormal frame bundles over flat spaces of sufficiently higher dimension. We have calculated Cartan characters showing that these EDS satisfy Cartan's test and are well-posed dynamical field theories. The first family includes a constant-coefficient (cc) EDS for classical Einstein vacuum relativity (q = 4). The second family is generated only by cc 2-forms, so these are integrable (but nonlinear) systems of parti…
For a finite reflection subgroup $G\leq O(n+1,1,\mR)$ of the conformal group of the sphere with standard conformal structure $(S^n,[g_0])$, we geometrically derive differential-difference Dunkl version of the series of conformally invariant differential operators with symbols given by powers of Laplace operator. The construction can be regarded as a deformation of the Fefferman-Graham ambient metric construction of GJMS operators.
We construct geometrically a homeomorphism between the moduli space of polynomial quadratic differentials on the complex plane and light-like polygons in the 2-dimensional Einstein Universe. As an application, we find a class of minimal Lagrangian maps between ideal polygons in the hyperbolic plane.
We construct a model of differential K-theory, using the geometrically defined Chern forms, whose cocycles are certain equivalence classes of maps into the Grassmannians and unitary groups. In particular, we produce the circle-integration maps for these models using classical homotopy-theoretic constructions, by incorporating certain differential forms which reconcile the incompatibility between these even and odd Chern forms. By the uniqueness theorem of Bunke and Schick, this model agrees with the spectrum-based models in the literature whose abstract Chern cocycles are compatible with the d…
In this paper, for a compact Lie group action,we prove the anomaly formula and the functoriality of the equivariant Bismut-Cheeger eta forms with perturbation operators when the equivariant family index vanishes. In order to prove them, we extend the Melrose-Piazza spectral section and its main properties to the equivariant case and introduce the equivariant version of the Dai-Zhang higher spectral flow for arbitrary dimensional fibers.Using these results, we construct a new analytic model of the equivariant differential K-theory for compact manifolds when the group action has finite stabilize…
