Argument Mining is defined as the task of automatically identifying and extracting argumentative components (e.g., premises, claims, etc.) and detecting the existing relations among them (i.e., support, attack, rephrase, no relation). One of the main issues when approaching this problem is the lack of data, and the size of the publicly available corpora. In this work, we use the recently annotated US2016 debate corpus. US2016 is the largest existing argument annotated corpus, which allows exploring the benefits of the most recent advances in Natural Language Processing in a complex domain like Argument (relation) Mining. We present an exhaustive analysis of the behavior of transformer-based models (i.e., BERT, XLNET, RoBERTa, DistilBERT and ALBERT) when predicting argument relations. Finally, we evaluate the models in five different domains, with the objective of finding the less domain dependent model. We obtain a macro F1-score of 0.70 with the US2016 evaluation corpus, and a macro F1-score of 0.61 with the Moral Maze cross-domain corpus.

With the advent of FrameNet and PropBank, many semantic role labeling (SRL) systems have been proposed in English. Although research on Japanese predicate argument structure analysis (PASA) has been conducted, most studies focused on surface cases. There are only few previous works on Japanese SRL for deep cases, and their models' accuracies are low. Therefore, we propose a hierarchical multitask learning method with dependency parsing (DP) and show that our model achieves state-of-the-art results in Japanese SRL. Also, we conduct experiments with a joint model that performs both argument iden…

In this paper, we focus on extracting interactive argument pairs from two posts with opposite stances to a certain topic. Considering opinions are exchanged from different perspectives of the discussing topic, we study the discrete representations for arguments to capture varying aspects in argumentation languages (e.g., the debate focus and the participant behavior). Moreover, we utilize hierarchical structure to model post-wise information incorporating contextual knowledge. Experimental results on the large-scale dataset collected from CMV show that our proposed framework can significantly …
Argument mining tasks require an informed range of low to high complexity linguistic phenomena and commonsense knowledge. Previous work has shown that pre-trained language models are highly effective at encoding syntactic and semantic linguistic phenomena when applied with transfer learning techniques and built on different pre-training objectives. It remains an issue of how much the existing pre-trained language models encompass the complexity of argument mining tasks. We rely on experimentation to shed light on how language models obtained from different lexical semantic families leverage th…
We explore the task of automatic assessment of argument quality. To that end, we actively collected 6.3k arguments, more than a factor of five compared to previously examined data. Each argument was explicitly and carefully annotated for its quality. In addition, 14k pairs of arguments were annotated independently, identifying the higher quality argument in each pair. In spite of the inherent subjective nature of the task, both annotation schemes led to surprisingly consistent results. We release the labeled datasets to the community. Furthermore, we suggest neural methods based on a recently …
Language identification has become a prerequisite for all kinds of automated text processing systems. In this paper, we present a rule-based language identifier tool for two closely related Indo-Aryan languages: Hindi and Magahi. This system has currently achieved an accuracy of approx 86.34%. We hope to improve this in the future. Automatic identification of languages will be significant in the accuracy of output of Web Crawlers.
Generating a concise summary from a large collection of arguments on a given topic is an intriguing yet understudied problem. We propose to represent such summaries as a small set of talking points, termed "key points", each scored according to its salience. We show, by analyzing a large dataset of crowd-contributed arguments, that a small number of key points per topic is typically sufficient for covering the vast majority of the arguments. Furthermore, we found that a domain expert can often predict these key points in advance. We study the task of argument-to-key point mapping, and introduc…
The automatic identification of discourse relations is still a challenging task in natural language processing. Discourse connectives, such as "since" or "but", are the most informative cues to identify explicit relations; however discourse parsers typically use a closed inventory of such connectives. As a result, discourse relations signaled by markers outside these inventories (i.e. AltLexes) are not detected as effectively. In this paper, we propose a novel method to leverage parallel corpora in text simplification and lexical resources to automatically identify alternative lexicalizations …
In this paper, we describe the problem of cognate identification and its relation to phylogenetic inference. We introduce subsequence based features for discriminating cognates from non-cognates. We show that subsequence based features perform better than the state-of-the-art string similarity measures for the purpose of cognate identification. We use the cognate judgments for the purpose of phylogenetic inference and observe that these classifiers infer a tree which is close to the gold standard tree. The contribution of this paper is the use of subsequence features for cognate identification…
This paper presents a language-independent deep learning architecture adapted to the task of multiword expression (MWE) identification. We employ a neural architecture comprising of convolutional and recurrent layers with the addition of an optional CRF layer at the top. This system participated in the open track of the Parseme shared task on automatic identification of verbal MWEs due to the use of pre-trained wikipedia word embeddings. It outperformed all participating systems in both open and closed tracks with the overall macro-average MWE-based F1 score of 58.09 averaged among all languag…
Arguments, counter-arguments, facts, and evidence obtained via documents related to previous court cases are of essential need for legal professionals. Therefore, the process of automatic information extraction from documents containing legal opinions related to court cases can be considered to be of significant importance. This study is focused on the identification of sentences in legal opinion texts which convey different perspectives on a certain topic or entity. We combined several approaches based on semantic analysis, open information extraction, and sentiment analysis to achieve our ob…

Past work in computational sarcasm deals primarily with sarcasm detection. In this paper, we introduce a novel, related problem: sarcasm target identification i.e., extracting the target of ridicule in a sarcastic sentence). We present an introductory approach for sarcasm target identification. Our approach employs two types of extractors: one based on rules, and another consisting of a statistical classifier. To compare our approach, we use two baselines: a naïve baseline and another baseline based on work in sentiment target identification. We perform our experiments on book snippets and twe…
In this paper I present a classifier for automatic identification of linguistic politeness in Hindi texts. I have used the manually annotated corpus of over 25,000 blog comments to train an SVM. Making use of the discursive and interactional approaches to politeness the paper gives an exposition of the normative, conventionalised politeness structures of Hindi. It is seen that using these manually recognised structures as features in training the SVM significantly improves the performance of the classifier on the test set. The trained system gives a significantly high accuracy of over 77% whic…

We present the first approach to automatically building resources for academic writing. The aim is to build a writing aid system that automatically edits a text so that it better adheres to the academic style of writing. On top of existing academic resources, such as the Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA) academic Word List, the New Academic Word List, and the Academic Collocation List, we also explore how to dynamically build such resources that would be used to automatically identify informal or non-academic words or phrases. The resources are compiled using different generic app…

In this paper, we discuss an attempt to develop an automatic language identification system for 5 closely-related Indo-Aryan languages of India, Awadhi, Bhojpuri, Braj, Hindi and Magahi. We have compiled a comparable corpora of varying length for these languages from various resources. We discuss the method of creation of these corpora in detail. Using these corpora, a language identification system was developed, which currently gives state of the art accuracy of 96.48\%. We also used these corpora to study the similarity between the 5 languages at the lexical level, which is the first data-b…
In this paper, we propose a method to automatically identify future events in Lebanon's economy from Arabic texts. Challenges are threefold: first, we need to build a corpus of Arabic texts that covers Lebanon's economy; second, we need to study how future events are expressed linguistically in these texts; and third, we need to automatically identify the relevant textual segments accordingly. We will validate this method on a constructed corpus form the web and show that it has very promising results. To do so, we will be using SLCSAS, a system for semantic analysis, based on the Contextual E…
Much as the social landscape in which languages are spoken shifts, language too evolves to suit the needs of its users. Lexical semantic change analysis is a burgeoning field of semantic analysis which aims to trace changes in the meanings of words over time. This paper presents an approach to lexical semantic change detection based on Bayesian word sense induction suitable for novel word sense identification. This approach is used for a submission to SemEval-2020 Task 1, which shows the approach to be capable of the SemEval task. The same approach is also applied to a corpus gleaned from 15 y…
Administrative agencies in the United States receive millions of comments each year concerning proposed agency actions during the eRulemaking process. These comments represent a diversity of arguments in support and opposition of the proposals. While agencies are required to identify and respond to substantive comments, they have struggled to keep pace with the volume of information. In this work we address the tasks of identifying argumentative text, classifying the type of argument claims employed, and determining the stance of the comment. First, we propose a taxonomy of argument claims bas…
The development of large and super-large language models, such as GPT-3, T5, Switch Transformer, ERNIE, etc., has significantly improved the performance of text generation. One of the important research directions in this area is the generation of texts with arguments. The solution of this problem can be used in business meetings, political debates, dialogue systems, for preparation of student essays. One of the main domains for these applications is the economic sphere. The key problem of the argument text generation for the Russian language is the lack of annotated argumentation corpora. In …

Argument mining has become a popular research area in NLP. It typically includes the identification of argumentative components, e.g. claims, as the central component of an argument. We perform a qualitative analysis across six different datasets and show that these appear to conceptualize claims quite differently. To learn about the consequences of such different conceptualizations of claim for practical applications, we carried out extensive experiments using state-of-the-art feature-rich and deep learning systems, to identify claims in a cross-domain fashion. While the divergent perception …

Language identification (LI) is the problem of determining the natural language that a document or part thereof is written in. Automatic LI has been extensively researched for over fifty years. Today, LI is a key part of many text processing pipelines, as text processing techniques generally assume that the language of the input text is known. Research in this area has recently been especially active. This article provides a brief history of LI research, and an extensive survey of the features and methods used so far in the LI literature. For describing the features and methods we introduce a …

Code-switching, or switching between languages, occurs for many reasons and has important linguistic, sociological, and cultural implications. Multilingual speakers code-switch for a variety of purposes, such as expressing emotions, borrowing terms, making jokes, introducing a new topic, etc. The reason for code-switching may be quite useful for analysis, but is not readily apparent. To remedy this situation, we annotate a new dataset of motivations for code-switching in Spanish-English. We build the first system (to our knowledge) to automatically identify a wide range of motivations that spe…

Free-text clinical notes detail all aspects of patient care and have great potential to facilitate quality improvement and assurance initiatives as well as advance clinical research. However, concerns about patient privacy and confidentiality limit the use of clinical notes for research. As a result, the information documented in these notes remains unavailable for most researchers. De-identification (de-id), i.e., locating and removing personally identifying protected health information (PHI), is one way of improving access to clinical narratives. However, there are limited off-the-shelf de-i…

Reasoning is a crucial part of natural language argumentation. To comprehend an argument, one must analyze its warrant, which explains why its claim follows from its premises. As arguments are highly contextualized, warrants are usually presupposed and left implicit. Thus, the comprehension does not only require language understanding and logic skills, but also depends on common sense. In this paper we develop a methodology for reconstructing warrants systematically. We operationalize it in a scalable crowdsourcing process, resulting in a freely licensed dataset with warrants for 2k authentic …

Argument search aims at identifying arguments in natural language texts. In the past, this task has been addressed by a combination of keyword search and argument identification on the sentence- or document-level. However, existing frameworks often address only specific components of argument search and do not address the following aspects: (1) argument-query matching: identifying arguments that frame the topic slightly differently than the actual search query; (2) argument identification: identifying arguments that consist of multiple sentences; (3) argument clustering: selecting retrieved ar…
This paper describes our experiments with automatically identifying native accents from speech samples of non-native English speakers using low level audio features, and n-gram features from manual transcriptions. Using a publicly available non-native speech corpus and simple audio feature representations that do not perform word/phoneme recognition, we show that it is possible to achieve close to 90% classification accuracy for this task. While character n-grams perform similar to speech features, we show that speech features are not affected by prompt variation, whereas ngrams are. Since the…
Modern topic identification (topic ID) systems for speech use automatic speech recognition (ASR) to produce speech transcripts, and perform supervised classification on such ASR outputs. However, under resource-limited conditions, the manually transcribed speech required to develop standard ASR systems can be severely limited or unavailable. In this paper, we investigate alternative unsupervised solutions to obtaining tokenizations of speech in terms of a vocabulary of automatically discovered word-like or phoneme-like units, without depending on the supervised training of ASR systems. Moreove…
In real-world debates, the most common way to counter an argument is to reason against its main point, that is, its conclusion. Existing work on the automatic generation of natural language counter-arguments does not address the relation to the conclusion, possibly because many arguments leave their conclusion implicit. In this paper, we hypothesize that the key to effective counter-argument generation is to explicitly model the argument's conclusion and to ensure that the stance of the generated counter is opposite to that conclusion. In particular, we propose a multitask approach that jointl…
The widespread diffusion of medical and political claims in the wake of COVID-19 has led to a voluminous rise in misinformation and fake news. The current vogue is to employ manual fact-checkers to efficiently classify and verify such data to combat this avalanche of claim-ridden misinformation. However, the rate of information dissemination is such that it vastly outpaces the fact-checkers' strength. Therefore, to aid manual fact-checkers in eliminating the superfluous content, it becomes imperative to automatically identify and extract the snippets of claim-worthy (mis)information present in…
We present a model for aggregation of product review snippets by joint aspect identification and sentiment analysis. Our model simultaneously identifies an underlying set of ratable aspects presented in the reviews of a product (e.g., sushi and miso for a Japanese restaurant) and determines the corresponding sentiment of each aspect. This approach directly enables discovery of highly-rated or inconsistent aspects of a product. Our generative model admits an efficient variational mean-field inference algorithm. It is also easily extensible, and we describe several modifications and their effect…
This article presents an automatic frame analysis system evaluated on a corpus of French encyclopedic history texts annotated according to the FrameNet formalism. The chosen approach relies on an integrated sequence labeling model which jointly optimizes frame identification and semantic role segmentation and identification. The purpose of this study is to analyze the task complexity from several dimensions. Hence we provide detailed evaluations from a feature selection point of view and from the data point of view.

Automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems often need to be developed for extremely low-resource languages to serve end-uses such as audio content categorization and search. While universal phone recognition is natural to consider when no transcribed speech is available to train an ASR system in a language, adapting universal phone models using very small amounts (minutes rather than hours) of transcribed speech also needs to be studied, particularly with state-of-the-art DNN-based acoustic models. The DARPA LORELEI program provides a framework for such very-low-resource ASR studies, and provi…

Development of a proper names pronunciation lexicon is usually a manual effort which can not be avoided. Grapheme to phoneme (G2P) conversion modules, in literature, are usually rule based and work best for non-proper names in a particular language. Proper names are foreign to a G2P module. We follow an optimization approach to enable automatic construction of proper names pronunciation lexicon. The idea is to construct a small orthogonal set of words (basis) which can span the set of names in a given database. We propose two algorithms for the construction of this basis. The transcription lex…
When summarizing a collection of views, arguments or opinions on some topic, it is often desirable not only to extract the most salient points, but also to quantify their prevalence. Work on multi-document summarization has traditionally focused on creating textual summaries, which lack this quantitative aspect. Recent work has proposed to summarize arguments by mapping them to a small set of expert-generated key points, where the salience of each key point corresponds to the number of its matching arguments. The current work advances key point analysis in two important respects: first, we dev…

Automatic argument generation is an appealing but challenging task. In this paper, we study the specific problem of counter-argument generation, and present a novel framework, CANDELA. It consists of a powerful retrieval system and a novel two-step generation model, where a text planning decoder first decides on the main talking points and a proper language style for each sentence, then a content realization decoder reflects the decisions and constructs an informative paragraph-level argument. Furthermore, our generation model is empowered by a retrieval system indexed with 12 million articles…
The amount of electronic documents in the Internet grows very quickly. How to effectively identify subjects for documents becomes an important issue. In past, the researches focus on the behavior of nouns in documents. Although subjects are composed of nouns, the constituents that determine which nouns are subjects are not only nouns. Based on the assumption that texts are well-organized and event-driven, nouns and verbs together contribute the process of subject identification. This paper considers four factors: 1) word importance, 2) word frequency, 3) word co-occurrence, and 4) word distanc…

Automatic language identification is a natural language processing problem that tries to determine the natural language of a given content. In this paper we present a statistical method for automatic language identification of written text using dictionaries containing stop words and diacritics. We propose different approaches that combine the two dictionaries to accurately determine the language of textual corpora. This method was chosen because stop words and diacritics are very specific to a language, although some languages have some similar words and special characters they are not all co…
Nominalization is a highly productive phenomena in most languages. The process of nominalization ejects a verb from its syntactic role into a nominal position. The original verb is often replaced by a semantically emptied support verb (e.g., "make a proposal"). The choice of a support verb for a given nominalization is unpredictable, causing a problem for language learners as well as for natural language processing systems. We present here a method of discovering support verbs from an untagged corpus via low-level syntactic processing and comparison of arguments attached to verbal forms and po…
Use of medical data, also known as electronic health records, in research helps develop and advance medical science. However, protecting patient confidentiality and identity while using medical data for analysis is crucial. Medical data can be in the form of tabular structures (i.e. tables), free-form narratives, and images. This study focuses on medical data in the free form longitudinal text. De-identification of electronic health records provides the opportunity to use such data for research without it affecting patient privacy, and avoids the need for individual patient consent. In this paper, we examine whether ChatGPT can be used for zero-shot text classification, more specifically, automatic genre identification. We compare ChatGPT with a multilingual XLM-RoBERTa language model that was fine-tuned on datasets, manually annotated with genres. The models are compared on test sets in two languages: English and Slovenian. Results show that ChatGPT outperforms the fine-tuned model when applied to the dataset which was not seen…
This paper introduces the proposed automatic minuting system of the Hitachi team for the First Shared Task on Automatic Minuting (AutoMin-2021). In addition, we apply a technique of argument mining to the generated minutes, reorganizing them in a well-structured and coherent way. We utilize multip…
Current definitions of notions of lexical density and semantic weight are based on the division of words into closed and open classes, and on intuition. This paper develops a computationally tractable definition of semantic weight, concentrating on what it means for a word to be semantically light; the definition involves looking at the frequency of a word in particular syntactic constructions which are indicative of lightness. Verbs such as "make" and "take", when they function as support verbs, are often considered to be semantically light. To test our definition, we carried out an experimen…
