X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) is generally not observed for antiferromagnetic (AFM) states because XMCD signals from the antiparallelly coupled spins cancel each other. In this letter, we theoretically show the presence of an XMCD signal from compensated two-dimensional triangle AFM structures on a Kagome lattice. The calculation reveals the complete correspondence between the XMCD spectra and the sign of the spin chirality: the XMCD signal only appears when the spin chirality is negative. This XMCD signal originates from the different absorption coefficients of the three sublattices reflecting different charge density anisotropies and directions of spin and orbital magnetic moments.
Towards understanding the multi-orbital quantum antiferromagnetism in iron pnictides, effective spin couplings and spin fluctuation induced quantum corrections to sublattice magnetization are obtained in the $(π,0)$ AF state of a realistic three band interacting electron model involving $xz$, $yz$, and $xy$ Fe 3d orbitals. The $xy$ orbital is found to be mainly responsible for the generation of strong ferromagnetic spin coupling in the $b$ direction, which is critically important to fully account for the spin wave dispersion as measured in inelastic neutron scattering experiments. The ferromag…
We present the classical electromagnetic theory framework of reflection of a light beam carrying Orbital Angular Momentum (OAM) by an in-plane magnetic structure with generic symmetry. Depending on the magnetization symmetry, we find a change in the OAM content of the reflected beam due to magneto-optic interaction and an asymmetric far-field intensity profile. This leads to three types of Magnetic Helicoidal Dichroism (MHD), observed when switching the OAM of the incoming beam, the magnetization sign, or both. In cases of sufficient symmetries, we establish analytical formulas which link an e…
We investigate the possibility of controlling the magnetic phase transition of the heterointerface between a half-doped manganite La$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_{3}$ and a multiferroic BiFeO$_{3}$ through magnetoelectric coupling. Using macroscopic magnetometry and element-selective x-ray magnetic circular dichroism at the Mn and Fe \emph{L}-edges, we discover that the ferroelectric polarization of BFO controls simultaneously the magnetization of BFO and LCMO. X-ray absorption spectra at oxygen \emph{K}-edge and linear dichroism at Mn \emph{L}-edge suggest that the interfacial coupling is mainly der…
In order to investigate the mechanism of ferromagnetic ordering in the new n-type magnetic semiconductor (In,Fe)As co-doped with Be, we have performed X-ray absorption spectroscopy and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) studies of ferromagnetic and paramagnetic samples. The spectral line shapes suggest that the ferromagnetism is intrinsic originating from Fe atoms incorporated into the Zinc-blende-type InAs lattice. The magnetization curves of Fe measured by XMCD were well reproduced by the superposition of a Langevin function representing superparamagnetic (SPM) behavior of nano-scale f…
We report low temperature (1.8-15 K) ac magnetic susceptibility and isothermal remanent magnetization behavior for the single crystalline form of Dy2PdSi3, crystallizing in a AlB2-derived hexagonal structure, for two orientations. The results, while confirming the existence of two magnetic transitions, one at 8 K and the other at 2.5 K, as inferred from previous dc magnetization studies, suggest that the 2.5K-transition is spin-glass-like, with an interesting sensitivity to the application of an external dc magnetic field. Thus, this compound appears to undergo a transition from antiferromagne…

We report on a solution-growth based method to synthesise single crystals of Y$_2$Co$_3$ and on its structural and magnetic properties. We find that Y$_2$Co$_3$ crystallizes in the La2Ni3-type orthorhombic structure with space group Cmce (No. 64), with Co forming distorted kagome lattices. Y$_2$Co$_3$ orders antiferromagnetically below $T_N$ = 252 K. Magnetization measurements reveal that the moments are primarily aligned along the b axis with evidence for some canting. Band-structure calculations indicate that ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic orders are nearly degenerate, at odds with expe…
The Mn2BO4 single crystals have been grown using the flux technique. The careful study crystal structure and magnetic properties have been carried out. The antiferromagnet transition at TN = 26 K has been traced through the dc magnetization and specific heat temperature dependences. The magnetic uniaxial anisotropy has been detected with easy axis of magnetization lying in ab-plane. A reduction of the effective magnetic moment value is assigned to the non-quenched orbital moment of Jahn-Teller Mn3+ ions. Based on the superexchange interactions calculations the magnetic behavior is discussed.
We report on spherical neutron polarimetry and unpolarized neutron diffraction in zero magnetic field as well as flipping ratio and static magnetization measurements in high magnetic fields on the multiferroic square lattice antiferromagnet Ba$_2$CoGe$_2$O$_7$. We found that in zero magnetic field the magnetic space group is $Cm'm2'$ with sublattice magnetization parallel to the [100] axis of this orthorhombic setting. The spin canting has been found to be smaller than $0.2^\circ$ in the ground state. This assignment is in agreement with the field-induced changes of the magnetic domain structu…
We discuss a pseudospin representation of the two-dimensional t-J model. We introduce pseudospins associated with empty sites, deriving a new representation of the t-J model that consists of local spins and spinless fermions. We show, within a mean-field approximation, that our representation of t-J model corresponds to the {\it isotropic} antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model in an effective magnetic field. The strength and the direction of the effective field are determined by the hole doping $δ$ and the orientation of pseudospins associated with empty sites, respectively. We find that the stag…
Low temperature magnetization M measurements down to 70~mK have been performed through the superconducting upper critical field H_c2 of CeCoIn5 with the field H parallel to the c axis of the tetragonal crystal. The crossing through the upper critical field H_c2(0) is marked by a sign change in the temperature dependence of M(T). A Fermi liquid law of the magnetization is observed in the superconducting phase while in the paramagnetic state above H_c2 a quasi-linear temperature dependence is obeyed. The specific heat below H_c2 is therefor dominated by the increase of γ(H), the linear term of t…
Identifying and imaging spin textures of ever more complex magnetic structures has become a major challenge in the past decade, especially at ultrashort timescales. Most of current approaches are based on the analysis of their polarization and magnetization-dependent reflectivities. Based on our joint publication XXX XX XXXXXX, we introduce a different concept, centered on the coupling of magnetic structures with light beams carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM). Upon reflection by a magnetic vortex, an incoming beam with a unique value $\ell$ of OAM gets enriched in the neighboring OAM mode…
A magnetic origin for the honeycomb reconstruction of metallic surfaces with three-fold symmetry like Pb/Ge (111) is proposed. Assuming that the groundstate is an antiferromagnetic insulator over the triangular lattice of adatom sites (Pb), we demonstrate that the former is simultaneously unstable to canting and to a structural distortion if the surface is soft enough. We therefore predict a net magnetization over the reconstructed surface at sufficiently low temperature.
The magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) has recently been discovered in antiferromagnetic Kagome lattice Mn3Sn. Since the compound exhibits a coplanar $120^\circ$ antiferromagnetic (AFM) order, the magnetic moments cancel each other, and the net magnetization is almost zero. However, the MOKE is allowed due to the lack of the time-reversal symmetry (TRS) of the AFM order. X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) can detect a difference in up and down the spin density of states (DOS), and thus XMCD originating from the spin operator, the so-called Sz term, should be negligibly small as well as t…
We have studied magnetism in anatase Ti$_{1-x}$Co$_x$O$_{2-δ}$ ({\it x} = 0.05) thin films with various electron carrier densities, by soft x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) measurements at the Co $L_{2,3}$ absorption edges. For electrically conducting samples, the magnetic moment estimated by XMCD was $<$ 0.3 $μ_B$/Co using the surface-sensitive total electron yield (TEY) mode, while it was 0.3-2.4 $μ_B$/Co using the bulk-sensitive total fluorescence yield (TFY) mode. The latter value is in the same range as the saturation magnetization 0.6-2.1 $μ_B$/Co deduced by SQUID measurement. Th…
A self-consistent spin-fluctuation theory is developed to obtain T_N vs. U for the half-filled Hubbard antiferromagnet in the whole U/t range. Good agreement is obtained in the strong coupling limit with the high-temperature series-expansion result for the equivalent Heisenberg model. Quantum, spin-fluctuation correction to the sublattice magnetization is also obtained for all U at the one-loop level. A spin picture is used throughout, and quantum effects are incorporated through transverse spin fluctuations, which are evaluated in the RPA using a new method.
A detailed theoretical study on the electronic structure and magnetic properties of half-metallic ferromagnet CrO$_2$ was carried out by means of relativistic full-potential linear muffin-tin orbital method within the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) to the exchange correlation potential. Our calculation favours the [001] magnetization axis to be the easy axis of magnetization when compared to the [100] axis which is in agreement with the experiments. The calculated spin and orbital magnetic moments of Cr agrees well with the experimental and other theoretical works. The Cr L$_{2,3}$ x…
Compounds based on the Fe2P structure have continued to attract interest because of the interplay between itinerant and localized magnetism in a non-centrosymmetric crystal structure, and because of the recent developments of these materials for magnetocaloric applications. Here we report the growth and characterization of mm size single crystals of FeMnP0.8Si0.2. Single crystal x-ray diffraction, magnetization, resistivity, Hall and heat capacity data are reported. Surprisingly, the crystals exhibit itinerant antiferromagnetic order below 158 K with no hint of ferromagnetic behavior in the ma…
Magnetization, nuclear magnetic resonance, high-resolution x-ray diffraction and magnetic field-dependent neutron diffraction measurements reveal a novel magnetic ground state of Ba{0.60}K{0.40}Mn2As2 in which itinerant ferromagnetism (FM) below a Curie temperature TC = 100 K arising from the doped conduction holes coexists with collinear antiferromagnetism (AFM) of the Mn local moments that order below a Neel temperature TN = 480 K. The FM ordered moments are aligned in the tetragonal ab-plane and are orthogonal to the AFM-ordered Mn moments that are aligned along the c-axis. The magnitude an…
For CaCu$_{3}$Ti$_{4}$O$_{12}$ -- an insulator that exhibits a giant dielectric response above 100 K -- Cu$^{2+}$ antiferromagnetic spin ordering has been investigated by magnetic Raman scattering and magnetization measurements. Below the Néel temperature, T$_{N} = 25$ K, magnetic excitations have been identified. Above T$_{N}$ Raman spectra reveal short-range antiferromagnetic fluctuations that increase with cooling like T$^{-1}$. No deviations from Curie-Weiss law have been observed above T$_{N}$.
Neutron scattering measurements have demonstrated that the heavily Cu-doped NaFe$_{1-x}$Cu$_{x}$As compound behaves like a Mott insulator exhibiting both real space Fe-Cu stripes, as well as antiferromagnetism below a Néel temperature for $x\lesssim 0.5$. We have investigated evolution of structural and magnetic ordering using $^{23}$Na and $^{75}$As NMR for single crystals ($x$ = 0.39 and 0.48), confirming antiferromagnetism in the form of magnetic stripes. We show that end-chain defects in these stripes are the principal source of magnetic disorder and are responsible for cluster spin-glass …
We have succeeded in growing single crystals of the heavy-fermion superconductor CeCo(In1-xZnx)5 with x<=0.07. Measurements of specific heat, electrical resistivity, dc magnetization and ac susceptibility revealed that the superconducting (SC) transition temperature Tc decreases from 2.25 K (x=0) to 1.8 K (x=0.05) by doping Zn into CeCoIn5. Furthermore, these measurements indicate a development of a new ordered phase below T_o ~ 2.2 K for x=>0.05, characterized by the reduced magnetization and electrical resistivity in the ordered phase, and the enhancement of specific heat at T_o. This phase …
Due to the lack of any magnetic order down to 1.7 K in the parent bulk compound NdNiO2, the recently discovered 9-15 K superconductivity in the infinite-layer Nd0.8Sr0.2NiO2 thin films has provided an exciting playground for unearthing new superconductivity mechanisms. In this letter, we report the successful synthesis of a series of superconducting Nd0.8Sr0.2NiO2 thin films ranging from 8 to 40 nm. We observe the large exchange bias effect between the superconducting Nd0.8Sr0.2NiO2 films and a thin ferromagnetic layer, which suggests the existence of the antiferromagnetic order. Furthermore, …
X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) measurements on single-crystal and powder samples of Ba$_{0.6}$K$_{0.4}$Mn$_{2}$As$_{2}$ show that the ferromagnetism below $T_{\textrm{C}}\approx$ 100 K arises in the As $4p$ conduction band. No XMCD signal is observed at the Mn x-ray absorption edges. Below $T_{\textrm{C}}$, however, a clear XMCD signal is found at the As $K$ edge which increases with decreasing temperature. The XMCD signal is absent in data taken with the beam directed parallel to the crystallographic $\textrm{c}$ axis indicating that the orbital magnetic moment lies in the basal pla…
Emergence of partially disordered antiferromagnetism and isothermal magnetization plateau due to geometrical frustration in a metallic compound, Er2RhSi3
We investigate a dynamical magnetoelectric effect due to a magnetic resonance in helical spin structures through the coupling between magnetization and electric polarization via a spin current mechanism. We show that the magnon has both the dynamical magnetic moment $ΔM^ω$ and the electric moment $ΔP^ω$ ($\perp ΔM^ω$), i.e., a dynamical toroidal moment, under external magnetic fields, and thus it is named the {\em toroidalmagnon}. The toroidalmagnon exists in most conical spin structures owing to the generality of the spin current mechanism. In the absorption of electromagnetic waves, the toro…
A novel magnetic ground state is reported for the Hubbard Hamiltonian in strained graphene. When the chemical potential lies close to the Dirac point, the ground state exhibits locally both the Néel and ferromagnetic orders, even for weak Hubbard interaction. Whereas the Néel order parameter remains of the same sign in the entire system, the magnetization at the boundary takes the opposite sign from the bulk. The total magnetization this way vanishes, and the magnetic ground state is globally only an antiferromagnet. This peculiar ordering stems from the nature of the strain-induced single par…
We report the low-temperature properties of phase-pure single crystals of the half-Heusler compound CuMnSb grown by means of optical float-zoning. The magnetization, specific heat, electrical resistivity, and Hall effect of our single crystals exhibit an antiferromagnetic transition at $T_{\mathrm{N}} = 55~\mathrm{K}$ and a second anomaly at a temperature $T^{*} \approx 34~\mathrm{K}$. Powder and single-crystal neutron diffraction establish an ordered magnetic moment of $(3.9\pm0.1)~μ_{\mathrm{B}}/\mathrm{f.u.}$, consistent with the effective moment inferred from the Curie-Weiss dependence of …
A systematic study the magnetization in La0.8.MnO3 films of thickness varying from ultra-thin to bulk-like has been conducted. The study reveals suppression of the bulk magnetization for films up to at least 1600 A. In addition, the surface (top 50 A) of all films exhibits depressed magnetization as observed by x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). The reduced surface magnetization is attributed to the coexistence of magnetic and nonmagnetic components of the same chemical composition.
Results of dc magnetization study are presented showing interesting thermomagnetic history effects across the antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic transition in Ce(Fe$_{0.96}$Al$_{0.04})_2$. Specifically, we observe (i)ZFC/FC irreversibility rising with increasing field; (ii) virgin curve lying outside the envelope M-H curve. We argue that these effects are quite different from the characteristics seen in spin-glasses or in hard ferromagnets; they can be understood as metastabilities associated with a first order magnetic phase transition.
We propose that concurrently magnetic and ferroelectric, i.e. multiferroic, compounds endowed with electrically-active magnetic excitations (electromagnons) provide a key to produce large directional dichroism for long wavelengths of light. By exploiting the control of ferroelectric polarization and magnetization in a multiferroic oxide Ba$_2$CoGe$_2$O$_7$, we demonstrate the realization of such a directional light-switch function at terahertz frequecies in resonance with the electromagnon absorption. Our results imply that this hidden potential is present in a broad variety of multiferroics.
The ferromagnetic superconductor UCoGe has been investigated by high field X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) at the U-M$_{4,5}$ and Co/Ge-K edges. The analysis of the branching ratio and XMCD at the U-M$_{4,5}$ edges reveals that the U-5$f$ electrons count is close to 3. The orbital ($\sim0.70\,μ_B$) and spin ($\sim-0.30\,μ_B$) moments of U at 2.1K and 17T (H//c) have been determined. Their ratio ($\sim-2.3$) suggests a significant delocalization of the 5$f$ electron states. The similar field dependences of the local U/Co and the macroscopic magnetization indicate that the Co moment is …
In the perovskite-type Ca$_{1-x}$Ce$_{x}$MnO$_{3}$ (CCMO), one can control the transport and magnetic properties through varying Ce content. In the case of thin films, the properties can also be controlled by epitaxial strain from the substrate through changing it such as YAlO$_{3}$ (YAO), NdAlO$_{3}$ (NAO), and LaSrAlO$_{4}$ (LSAO). However, one cannot measure the magnetization of thin films on NAO substrates by conventional magnetization measurements because of the strong paramagnetic signals from the Nd$^{3+}$ ions. In order to eliminate the influence of Nd$^{3+}$ and to identify magnetic p…
Magnetization and specific heat measurements on a UIrSi3 single crystal reveal Ising-like antiferromagnetism below T$_N$ = 41.7 K with easy magnetization direction along the c-axis of tetragonal structure. The antiferromagentic ordering is suppressed by magnetic fields > H$_c$ (μ$_0$H$_c$ = 7.3 T at 2 K) applied along the c-axis. The first-order metamagnetic transition at H$_c$ exhibits asymmetric hysteresis reflecting a slow reentry of the complex ground-state antiferromagnetic structure with decreasing field. The hysteresis narrows with increasing temperature and vanishes at 28 K. A second-o…
Rare earth ions typically exhibit larger magnetic moments than transition metal ions and thus promise the opening of a wider exchange gap in the Dirac surface states of topological insulators. Yet, in a recent photoemission study of Eu-doped Bi$_2$Te$_3$ films, the spectra remained gapless down to $T = 20\;\text{K}$. Here, we scrutinize whether the conditions for a substantial gap formation in this system are present by combining spectroscopic and bulk characterization methods with theoretical calculations. For all studied Eu doping concentrations, our atomic multiplet analysis of the $M_{4,5}…
The evolution of magnetic properties of isostructural and isoelectronic solid solutions of the superconducting itinerant 5f-electron ferromagnet UCoGe with antiferromagnet UIrGe was studied by magnetization, AC susceptibility, specific heat, and electrical resistivity measurements of a series of UCo1-xIrxGe compounds in polycrystalline and single crystalline form at various temperatures and magnetic fields. Both the weak ferromagnetism and superconductivity in UCoGe were found to have vanished already for very low Ir substitution for Co x = 0.02. The antiferromagnetism of UIrGe is gradually su…
Linear dichroism -- the polarization dependent absorption of electromagnetic waves -- is routinely exploited in applications as diverse as structure determination of DNA or polarization filters in optical technologies. Here filamentary absorbers with a large length-to-width ratio are a prerequisite. For magnetization dynamics in the few GHz frequency regime strictly linear dichroism was not observed for more than eight decades. Here, we show that the bulk chiral magnet Cu$_{2}$OSeO$_{3}$ exhibits linearly polarized magnetization dynamics at an unexpectedly small frequency of about 2 GHz. Unlik…
Magnetic anisotropy of epitaxially grown thin films is affected by the strain from the substrates due to a combined effect of distorted electronic structure and spin-orbit interaction (SOI). As an inverse process, one expects an anisotropy of the electronic structure induced by magnetization in the presence of SOI. We have studied the charge-density anisotropy induced by magnetization in thin films of the ferromagnetic metal La$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$MnO$_3$ via x-ray magnetic linear dichroism (XMLD). XMLD measurements on thin films with various thicknesses have shown that the XMLD intensity is propor…
Long range antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering of Ni spins in Ni2NbBO6 has been studied with single crystal from spin susceptibility measurement and comparedwith the ab initio calculation results consistently. Below TN = 23.5 K, the S = 1 spins align along the a direction for edge-shared NiO6 octahedra which form crystallographic armchair chains along the b direction. The isothermal magnetization M(H) below TN shows spin-flop transition for magnetic field above 36 kOe along the a axis, which indicates the spin anisotropy is along the a direction. The electronic and magnetic structures of Ni2NbBO6 …

Single crystals of $R$Cd$_{0.67}$As$_2$ ($R$ = La and Ce) have been synthesized by high temperature ternary melt and their physical properties have been explored by means of magnetization, specific heat, electrical resistivity, Hall coefficient, and thermoelectric power measurements. $R$Cd$_{0.67}$As$_2$ compounds indicate a (structural) phase transition at high temperatures, accompanied by a remarkable increase of the electrical resistivity with an extremely low carrier concentration. CeCd$_{0.67}$As$_2$ exhibits a large magnetic anisotropy and an antiferromagnetic (AFM) order below $T_{N} = …
Nature of the field-induced charge ordered phase (phase II) of SmRu$_4$P$_{12}$ has been investigated by resonant x-ray diffraction (RXD) and polarized neutron diffraction (PND), focusing on the relationship between the atomic displacements and the antiferromagnetic (AFM) moments of Sm. From the analysis of the interference between the non-resonant Thomson scattering and the resonant magnetic scattering, combined with the spectral function obtained from x-ray magnetic circular dichroism, it is shown that the AFM moment of Sm prefers to be parallel to the field ($m_{\text{AF}} \parallel H$), gi…
We report on the first study of the noncentrosymmetric ternary carbide YbCoC$_{2}$. Our magnetization, specific heat, resistivity and neutron diffraction measurements consistently show that the system behaves as a heavy-fermion compound, displaying an amplitude-modulated magnetic structure below the Néel temperature reaching $T_{N}$ = 33 K under pressure. Such a large value, being the highest among the Yb-based systems, is explained in the light of our ab initio calculations, which show that the 4f electronic states of Yb have a dual nature -- i.e., due to their strong hybridization with the 3…
Motivated by the observation of unusual magnetism in Ce_xCu_2Si_2 ($x\sim 1$), we study the effect of disorder, such as Ce vacancy, on the competition between superconductivity (SC) and antiferromagnetism (AF) on the basis of the phenomenological Ginzburg-Landau theory. Assuming that the AF-SC transition is of first order in clean system, we show that a single impurity in the SC state can induce staggered magnetization by suppressing the SC around it. For finite concentration of impurities, the first-order AF-SC boundary in the clean case is replaced by a finite region where the SC and the ind…
The multiple reentrant quantum phase transitions in the $S=1/2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chains with random bond alternation in the magnetic field are investigated by the density matrix renormalization group method combined with the interchain mean field approximation. It is assumed that the odd-th bond is antiferromagnetic with strength $J$ and even-th bond can take the values ${\JS}$ and ${\JW}$ $ ({\JS} > J > {\JW} > 0)$ randomly with probability $p$ and $1-p$, respectively. The pure version ($p=0$ and $p=1$) of this model has a spin gap but exhibits a field induced antiferromagnetism i…
One important aspect of the magneto-structural transition in MnCoGe and related materials is the reduction in saturation magnetization from the orthorhombic to the hexagonal phase. Here, by combining an element specific magnetization probe such as x-ray magnetic circular dichroism and band structure calculations, we show that the magnetic moment instability between orthorhombic and hexagonal structures originates from a reduction in the Mn sub-lattice magnetization. The consequences of the moment instability for the magnetocaloric effect are discussed.
In this paper, we investigate the low temperature magnetic properties of the rare-earth garnet compound Nd$_3$Ga$_5$O$_{12}$ in detail by means of magnetization, specific heat and magnetocaloric effect measurements. The magnetic thermal properties along with the crystal field calculations reveal that the Nd$^{3+}$ ions form into a frustrated hyper-kagome lattice with connected triangles have an Ising-like ground state with the easy axis along the local [100], [010] and [001] directions. Instead of a quantum spin liquid ground state, an antiferromagnetically ordered state is found below $T_{\ma…
Quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) phase is a two-dimensional bulk ferromagnetic insulator with a nonzero Chern number in presence of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) but absence of applied magnetic fields. Associated metallic chiral edge states host dissipationless current transport in electronic devices. This intriguing QAH phase has recently been observed in magnetic impurity-doped topological insulators, {\it albeit}, at extremely low temperatures. Based on first-principles density functional calculations, here we predict that layered rhodium oxide K$_{0.5}$RhO$_2$ in noncoplanar chiral antiferromagnet…
The fermionic, time-reversal invariant Hofstadter-Hubbard model with a population difference between the two spin states is investigated. In the strongly interacting regime, where the system can be described by an effective spin model, we find an exotic spin structure by means of classical Monte-Carlo calculations. Remarkably, this spin structure exhibits a transverse net magnetization perpendicular to the magnetization induced by the population imbalance. It is thus inherently different from canted antiferromagnetism. We further investigate effects of quantum fluctuations within the dynamical…
We report a structural, thermodynamic and transport study of the newly synthesized Sr5Rh4O12, Ca5Ir3O12 and Ca4IrO6 single crystals. These quasi-one-dimensional insulators consist of a triangular lattice of spin chains running along the c-axis, and are commonly characterized by a partial antiferromagnetic (AFM) order, a small entropy removal associated with the phase transitions and a sizable low-temperature specific heat linearly proportional to temperature. Sr5Rh4O12 is defined by an AFM order below 23 K with strong evidence for an Ising character and two step-like transitions in isothermal …
We argue that the magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) of the hard x-ray Raman scattering (XRS) could be used as an element selective probe of local spin polarization. The magnitude of the XRS-MCD signal is directly proportional to the local spin polarization when the angle between the incident wavevector and the magnetization vector is $135^{\circ}$ or $-45^{\circ}$. By comparing the experimental observation and the configuration interaction calculation at the $L_{2,3}$ and $M_{2,3}$ edges of ferromagnetic iron, we suggest that the integrated MCD signal in terms of the transferred energy could b…
We investigate partially disordered antiferromagnetism in CoCl$_2$-2SC(NH$_2$)$_2$, in which a-b plane hexagonal layers are staggered along the c-axis, rather than stacked. A robust 1/3 state forms in applied magnetic fields which the spins are locked, varying neither as a function of temperature nor field. By contrast, in zero field, partial antiferromagnetic order occurs, in which free spins are available to create a Curie-like magnetic susceptibility. We report measurements of the crystallographic structure, and the specific heat, magnetization, and electric polarization down to $T$ = 50 mK…
The magnetism in the saw-tooth lattice of Mn in the olivine chalcogenides, Mn$_2$SiS$_{4-x}$Se$_x$ ($x$ = 1$\textendash$4) is studied in detail by analyzing their magnetization, specific heat and thermal conductivity properties and complemented with density functional theory calculations. The air-stable chalcogenides are antiferromagnets and show a linear trend in the transition temperature, $T_N$ as a function of Se-content ($x$) which shows a decrease from $T_N \approx$ 86~K for {\mss} to 66~K for {\msse}. Additional new magnetic anomalies are revealed at low temperatures for all the composi…
X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) at the Eu L-edge (2p->5d) in two compounds exhibiting valence fluctuation, namely EuNi2(Si0.18Ge0.82)2 and EuNi2P2, has been investigated at pulsed high magnetic fields of up to 40 T. A distinct XMCD peak corresponding to the trivalent state (Eu3+; f6), whose ground state is nonmagnetic (J=0), was observed in addition to the main XMCD peak corresponding to the magnetic (J=7/2) divalent state (Eu2+; f7). This result indicates that the 5d electrons belonging to both valence states are magnetically polarized. It was also found that the ratio P5d(3+)/P5d(2+…
