Nature of the field-induced charge ordered phase (phase II) of SmRu$_4$P$_{12}$ has been investigated by resonant x-ray diffraction (RXD) and polarized neutron diffraction (PND), focusing on the relationship between the atomic displacements and the antiferromagnetic (AFM) moments of Sm. From the analysis of the interference between the non-resonant Thomson scattering and the resonant magnetic scattering, combined with the spectral function obtained from x-ray magnetic circular dichroism, it is shown that the AFM moment of Sm prefers to be parallel to the field ($m_{\text{AF}} \parallel H$), giving rise to large and small moment sites around which the P$_{12}$ and Ru cage contract and expand, respectively. This is associated with the formation of the staggered ordering of the $Γ_7$-like and $Γ_8$-like crystal-field states, providing a strong piece of evidence for the charge order. PND was also performed to obtain complementary and unambiguous conclusion. In addition, isotropic and continuous nature of the phase II is demonstrated by the field-direction invariance of the interference spectrum in RXD. Crucial role of the $p$-$f$ hybridization is shown by resonant soft x-ray diffraction at the P $K$-edge ($1s\leftrightarrow 3p$), where we detected a resonance due to the spin polarized $3p$ orbitals reflecting the AFM order of Sm.
We present the exact solution of a one-dimensional model of a spin-gapped correlated electron system with hybridization impurities exhibiting both magnetic and mixed-valence properties. The host supports superconducting fluctuations, with a spin gap. The localized electrons create a band of antiferromagnetic spin excitations inside the gap for concentrations x of the impurities below some critical value x_c. When x = x_c the spin gap closes and a ferrimagnetic phase appears. This is the first example of an exactly solvable model with coexisting superconducting and antiferromagnetic fluctuation…
We present muon spin rotation ($μ$SR) and susceptibility measurements on single crystals of isoelectronically doped URu$_{2-x}$T$_x$Si$_2$ (T = Fe, Os) for doping levels up to 50\%. Zero Field (ZF) $μ$SR measurements show long-lived oscillations demonstrating that an antiferromagnetic state exists down to low doping levels for both Os and Fe dopants. The measurements further show an increase in the internal field with doping for both Fe and Os. Comparison of the local moment - hybridization crossover temperature from susceptibility measurements and our magnetic transition temperature shows tha…
Effects of Al, Mn and Sb dopings in CeFe2 and effect of applied pressure have been investigated. Al doping gives rise to the FM-AFM transition and a reduction in the magnetic moment and TC values, clearly indicating the growth of the AFM component. Mn and Sb dopings only cause a reduction in TC value. It is found that in general external pressure enhances the antiferromagnetism in both the pure and the doped alloys. Enhancement of the Ce 4f- Fe 3d hybridization as a result of dopings and with the external pressure may be the reason for the stabilization of antiferromagnetism in these alloys.
Antiferromagnetism and $d$-wave superconductivity are the most important competing ground-state phases of cuprate superconductors. Using cellular dynamical mean-field theory (CDMFT) for the Hubbard model, we revisit the question of the coexistence and competition of these phases in the one-band Hubbard model with realistic band parameters and interaction strengths. With an exact diagonalization solver, we improve on previous works with a more complete bath parametrization which is carefully chosen to grant the maximal possible freedom to the hybridization function for a given number of bath or…
Can the antiferromagnetic (AF) order be induced via the local moments' hybridization with the heavy electrons instead of conduction electrons? We address this intriguingly fundamental question via a prototypical model to describe the interplay between local moments and heavy electrons. We discover that the AF order can be mediated via the heavy electrons through the mechanism of "high-order" Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction. Moreover, the induced AF order can coexist with its metallicity in a finite regime of the phase diagram, which competes with and ultimately destroys the AF…
The Kondo lattice model, augmented by a Zeeman term, serves as a useful model of a Kondo insulator in an applied magnetic field. A variational mean field analysis of this system on a square lattice, backed up by quantum Monte Carlo calculations, reveals an interesting separation of magnetic field scales. For Zeeman energy comparable to the Kondo energy, the spin gap closes and the system develops transverse staggered magnetic order. The charge gap, however, survives up to a higher hybridization energy scale, at which point the canted antiferromagnetism is suppressed and the system becomes meta…

A central feature of the Periodic Anderson Model is the competition between antiferromagnetism, mediated by the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interaction at small conduction electron-local electron hybridization $V$, and singlet formation at large $V$. At zero temperature, and in dimension $d>1$, these two phases are separated by a quantum critical point $V_c$. We use Quantum Monte Carlo simulations to explore the effect of impurities which have a local hybridization $V_{*} < V_c$ in the AF regime which are embedded in a bulk singlet phase with $V > V_c$. We measure the suppression of singlet …

We report a combined experimental and theoretical study on intriguing magnetic properties of quasiferroelectric orthochromates. Large single crystals of the family of RECrO$_3$ (RE = Y, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, and Lu) compounds were successfully grown. Neutron Laue study indicates a good quality of the obtained single crystals. Applied magnetic-field and temperature dependent magnetization measurements reveal their intrinsic magnetic properties, especially the antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition temperatures. Density functional theory studies of the electronic structures were carried ou…
We obtain the conditions necessary for the emergence of various low temperature ordered states (local moment antiferromagnetism, unconventional superconductivity, quantum criticality, and Landau Fermi liquid behavior) in Kondo lattice materials by extending the two-fluid phenomenological theory of heavy electron behavior to incorporate the concept of hybridization effectiveness. We use this expanded framework to present a new phase digram and consistent physical explanation and quantitative description of measured emergent behaviors such as the pressure variation of the onset of local moment a…

Magnetism in Ni-Mn-Z (Z = Ga,In,Sn,Sb) Heusler alloys has so far been predominantly attributed to Rudermann-Kittel-Kasuya-Yoshida type interactions between Mn atoms. We investigate magnetic interactions in one such alloy, Ni$_{2}$Mn$_{1.4}$In$_{0.6}$ and attempt to explain the origin of antiferromagnetic (AFM) interactions that coexist with ferromagnetic ones. Through the combination of x-ray absorption spectroscopy and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD), we find that Ni plays an important role along with Mn in the overall magnetism. A significant hybridization that develops between Mn a…
Novel electronic phenomena frequently form in heavy fermions as a consequence of the mutual nature of localization and itineracy of f electrons. On the magnetically ordered side of the heavy fermion phase diagram, f moments are expected to be localized and decoupled from the Fermi surface. It remains ambiguous whether a Kondo lattice can develop inside the magnetically ordered phase. Using spectroscopic imaging with the scanning tunneling microscope, complemented by neutron scattering, x ray absorption spectroscopy, and dynamical mean field theory, we probe the electronic states in the antifer…
