Shock parameters at Earth's bow shock in rare instances can approach the Mach numbers predicted at supernova remnants. We present our analysis of a high Alfvén Mach number ($M_A= 27$) shock utilizing multipoint measurements from the Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) spacecraft during a crossing of Earth's quasi-perpendicular bow shock. We find that the shock dynamics are mostly driven by reflected ions, perturbations that they generate, and nonlinear amplification of the perturbations. Our analyses show that reflected ions create modest magnetic enhancements upstream of the shock which evolve in a nonlinear manner as they traverse the shock foot. They can transform into proto-shocks that propagate at small angles to the magnetic field and towards the bow shock. The nonstationary bow shock shows signatures of both reformation and surface ripples. Our observations indicate that although shock reformation occurs, the main shock layer never disappears. These observations are at high plasma $β$, a parameter regime which has not been well explored by numerical models.

Studies of shocks have long suggested that a shock can undergo cyclically self-reformation in a time scale of ion cyclotron period. This process has been proposed as a primary mechanism for energy dissipation and energetic particle acceleration at shocks. Unambiguous observational evidence, however, has remained elusive. Here, we report direct observations for the self-reformation process of a collisionless, high Mach number, quasi-perpendicular shock using MMS measurements. We find that reflected ions by the old shock ramp form a clear phase-space vortex, which gives rise to a new ramp. The n…
Ion temperature anisotropy is a common feature for (quasi-)perpendicular collisionless shocks. By using two-dimensional full particle simulations, it is shown, that the ion temperature component perpendicular to the shock magnetic field at the shock foot region is proportional to the square of the Alfven Mach number divided by the plasma beta. This result is also explained by a simple analytical argument, in which the reflected ions get energy from upstream plasma flow. By comparing our analytic and numerical results, it is also confirmed that the fraction of the reflected ions hardly depends …
The proper classification of plasma regions in near-Earth space is crucial to perform unambiguous statistical studies of fundamental plasma processes such as shocks, magnetic reconnection, waves and turbulence, jets and their combinations. The majority of available studies have been performed by using human-driven methods, such as visual data selection or the application of predefined thresholds to different observable plasma quantities. While human-driven methods have allowed performing many statistical studies, these methods are often time-consuming and can introduce important biases. On the…
Based on Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) observations from the Earth's bow shock, we have identified two plasma heating processes that operate at quasi-perpendicular shocks. Ions are subject to stochastic heating in a process controlled by the heating function $χ_j = m_j q_j^{-1} B^{-2}\mathrm{div}(\mathbf{E}_\perp)$ for particles with mass $m_j$ and charge $q_j$ in the electric and magnetic fields $\mathbf{E}$ and $\mathbf{B}$. Test particle simulations are employed to identify the parameter ranges for bulk heating and stochastic acceleration of particles in the tail of the distribution funct…
Low Mach number, high beta fast mode shocks can occur in the magnetic reconnection outflows of solar flares. These shocks, which occur above flare loop tops, may provide the electron energization responsible for some of the observed hard X-rays and contemporaneous radio emission. Here we present new 2D particle-in-cell simulations of low Mach number/high beta quasi-perpendicular shocks. The simulations show that electrons above a certain energy threshold experience shock-drift-acceleration. The transition energy between the thermal and non-thermal spectrum and the spectral index from the simul…
We investigate ion-scale kinetic plasma instabilities at the collisionless shock using linear theory and nonlinear Particle-in-Cell (PIC) simulations. We focus on the Alfvén-ion-cyclotron (AIC), mirror, and Weibel instabilities, which are all driven unstable by the effective temperature anisotropy induced by the shock-reflected ions within the transition layer of a strictly perpendicular shock. We conduct linear dispersion analysis with a homogeneous plasma model to mimic the shock transition layer by adopting a ring distribution with finite thermal spread to represent the velocity distributio…

Recent X-ray observations of merger shocks in galaxy clusters have shown that the post-shock plasma is two-temperature, with the protons hotter than the electrons. By means of two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations, we study the physics of electron irreversible heating in perpendicular low Mach number shocks, for a representative case with sonic Mach number of 3 and plasma beta of 16. We find that two basic ingredients are needed for electron entropy production: (i) an electron temperature anisotropy, induced by field amplification coupled to adiabatic invariance; and (ii) a mechanism to…
Fully kinetic two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations are used to study electron acceleration at high-Mach-number nonrelativistic perpendicular shocks. SNR shocks are mediated by the Weibel instability which is excited because of an interaction between shock-reflected and upstream ions. Nonlinear evolution of the Weibel instability leads to the formation of current sheets. At the turbulent shock ramp the current sheets decay through magnetic reconnection. The number of reconnection sites strongly depends on the ion-to-electron mass ratio and the Alfvénic Mach number of the simulated shock…
Shock waves propagating in collisionless heliospheric and astrophysical plasmas have been studied extensively over the decades. One prime motivation is to understand the nonthermal particle acceleration at shocks. Although the theory of diffusive shock acceleration (DSA) has long been the standard for cosmic-ray acceleration at shocks, plasma physical understanding of particle acceleration remains elusive. In this review, we discuss nonthermal electron acceleration mechanisms at quasi-perpendicular shocks, for which substantial progress has been made in recent years. The discussion presented i…
We report the observations of an electron vortex magnetic hole corresponding to a new type of coherent structures in the magnetosheath turbulent plasma using the Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission data. The magnetic hole is characterized by a magnetic depression, a density peak, a total electron temperature increase (with a parallel temperature decrease but a perpendicular temperature increase), and strong currents carried by the electrons. The current has a dip in the center of the magnetic hole and a peak in the outer region of the magnetic hole. The estimated size of the magnetic hole …
We perform particle-in-cell simulations of perpendicular nonrelativistic collisionless shocks to study electron heating and pre-acceleration for parameters that permit extrapolation to the conditions at young supernova remnants. Our high-resolution large-scale numerical experiments sample a representative portion of the shock surface and demonstrate that the efficiency of electron injection is strongly modulated with the phase of the shock reformation. For plasmas with low and moderate temperature (plasma beta $β_{\rm p}=5\cdot 10^{-4}$ and $β_{\rm p}=0.5$), we explore the nonlinear shock stru…
The analysis of the wave content inside a perpendicular bow shock indicates that heating of ions is related to the Lower-Hybrid-Drift (LHD) instability, and heating of electrons to the Electron-Cyclotron-Drift (ECD) instability. Both processes represent stochastic acceleration caused by the electric field gradients on the electron gyroradius scales, produced by the two instabilities. Stochastic heating is a single particle mechanism where large gradients break adiabatic invariants and expose particles to direct acceleration by the DC- and wave-fields. The acceleration is controlled by function…
Recent X-ray observations of merger shocks in galaxy clusters have shown that the post-shock plasma is two-temperature, with the protons being hotter than the electrons. In this work, the second of a series, we investigate by means of two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations the efficiency of electron irreversible heating in perpendicular low Mach number shocks. We consider values of plasma beta (ratio of thermal and magnetic pressures) in the range $4\lesssim β_{p0}\lesssim 32$ and sonic Mach number (ratio of shock speed to pre-shock sound speed) in the range $2\lesssim M_{s}\lesssim 5$, …
Astrophysical shocks are often studied in the high Mach number limit but weakly compressive fast shocks can occur in magnetic reconnection outflows and are considered to be a site of particle energization in solar flares. Here we study the microphysics of such perpendicular, low Mach number collisionless shocks using two-dimensional particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations with a reduced ion/electron mass ratio and employ a moving wall boundary method for initial generation of the shock. This moving wall method allows for more control of the shock speed, smaller simulation box sizes, and longer simu…
A full particle simulation study is carried out for studying microinstabilities generated at the shock front of perpendicular collisionless shocks. The structure and dynamics of shock waves are determined by Alfven Mach number and plasma beta, while microinstabilities are controlled by the ratio of the upstream bulk velocity to the electron thermal velocity and the plasma-to-cyclotron frequency. Thus, growth rates of microinstabilities are changed by the ion-to-electron mass ratio, even with the same Mach number and plasma beta. The present two-dimensional simulations show that the electron cy…
Large-scale two-dimensional (2D) full particle-in-cell simulations are carried out for studying the relationship between the dynamics of a perpendicular shock and microinstabilities generated at the shock foot. The structure and dynamics of collisionless shocks are generally determined by Alfven Mach number and plasma beta, while microinstabilities at the shock foot are controlled by the ratio of the upstream bulk velocity to the electron thermal velocity and the ratio of the plasma-to-cyclotron frequency. With a fixed Alfven Mach number and plasma beta, the ratio of the upstream bulk velocity…
High Mach number collisionless shocks are found in planetary systems and supernova remnants (SNRs). Electrons are heated at these shocks to the temperature well above the Rankine-Hugoniot prediction. However processes responsible for electron heating are still not well understood. We use a set of large-scale Particle-In-Cell simulations of non-relativistic shocks in high Mach number regime to clarify the electron heating processes. The physics of these shocks is defined by ion reflection at the shock ramp. Further interaction of the reflected ions and the upstream plasma excites electrostatic …
A two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulation is performed to investigate weakly magnetized perpendicular shocks with a magnetization parameter of 6 x 10^-5, which is equivalent to a high Alfvén Mach number M_A of ~130. It is shown that current filaments form in the foot region of the shock due to the ion-beam--Weibel instability (or the ion filamentation instability) and that they generate a strong magnetic field there. In the downstream region, these current filaments also generate a tangled magnetic field that is typically 15 times stronger than the upstream magnetic field. The thermal ener…
Electron injection at high Mach-number nonrelativistic perpendicular shocks is studied here for parameters that are applicable to young SNR shocks. Using high-resolution large-scale two-dimensional fully kinetic particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations and tracing individual particles we in detail analyze the shock surfing acceleration (SSA) of electrons at the leading edge of the shock foot. The central question is to what degree the process can be captured in 2D3V simulations. We find that the energy gain in SSA always arises from the electrostatic field of a Buneman wave. Electron energization is…
In this paper we show how a two dimensional fluid model can be used to interpret data obtained from an inclined Mach-probe or a Gundestrup probe. We use an analytical approximation of the solution of the differential equations describing the relation between the plasma flow and the measured ion saturation currents at the probe's surface. The parameters of this analytical solution are determined by comparison with the exact numerical solution of the equations. In this way we are able to measure the parallel as well as the perpendicular Mach numbers over the whole parameter range with a minimum …
How electrons get accelerated to relativistic energies in a high-Mach-number quasi-perpendicular shock is presented by means of ab initio particle-in-cell simulations in three dimensions. We found that coherent electrostatic Buneman waves and ion-Weibel magnetic turbulence coexist in a strong-shock structure whereby particles gain energy during shock-surfing and subsequent stochastic drift accelerations. Energetic electrons that initially experienced the surfing acceleration undergo pitch-angle diffusion by interacting with magnetic turbulence and continuous acceleration during confinement in …
A full particle simulation study is carried out on a perpendicular collisionless shock with a relatively low Alfven Mach number (M_A=5). In the present study, we have performed a two-dimensional (2D) electromagnetic full particle simulation with a "shock-rest-frame model". The simulation domain is taken to be larger than the ion inertial length in order to include full kinetics of both electrons and ions. The present simulation result has confirmed the transition of shock structures from the cyclic self-reformation to the quasi-stationary shock front. During the transition, electrons and ions …
Collisionless shocks are ubiquitous in the Universe and often associated with strong magnetic field. Here we use large-scale particle-in-cell simulations of non-relativistic perpendicular shocks in the high-Mach-number regime to study the amplification of magnetic field within shocks. The magnetic field is amplified at the shock transition due to the ion-ion two-stream Weibel instability. The normalized magnetic-field strength strongly correlates with the Alfvénic Mach number. Mock spacecraft measurements derived from PIC simulations are fully consistent with those taken in-situ at Saturn's bo…
Shock accelerated electrons are found in many astrophysical environments, and the mechanisms by which they are accelerated to high energies are still not completely clear. For relatively high Mach numbers, the shock is supercritical, and its front exhibit broadband fluctuations, or ripples. Shock surface fluctuations have been object of many observational and theoretical studies, and are known to be important for electron acceleration. We employ a combination of hybrid Particle-In-Cell and test-particle methods to study how shock surface fluctuations influence the acceleration of suprathermal …
Strong shocks in collisionless plasmas, such as supernovae shocks and shocks driven by coronal mass ejections, are known to be a primary source of energetic particles. Due to their different mass per charge ratio, the interaction of heavy ions with the shock layer differs from that of protons, and injection of these ions into acceleration processes is a challenge. Here we show the first direct observational evidence of magnetic reflection of alpha particles from a high Mach number quasi-perpendicular shock using in-situ spacecraft measurements. The intense magnetic amplification at the shock f…
