We classify Sarkisov links from index 1 Fano 3-folds anticanonically embedded in codimension 4 that start from so-called Type I Tom centres. We apply this to compute the Picard rank of many such Fano 3-folds.
We explain a web of Sarkisov links that overlies the classification of Fano weighted projective spaces in dimensions 3 and 4, extending results of Prokhorov.
For a general Fano $3$-fold of index $1$ in the weighted projective space $\mathbb{P}(1,1,1,1,2,2,3)$ we construct $2$ new birational models that are Mori fibre spaces, in the framework of the so-called Sarkisov program. We highlight a relation between the corresponding birational maps, as a circle of Sarkisov links, visualising the notion of relations (due to Kaloghiros) in Sarkisov program.
We characterise smooth curves in P^3 whose blow-up produces a threefold with anticanonical divisor big and nef. These are curves C of degree d and genus g lying on a smooth quartic, such that (i) $4d-30 \le g\le 14$ or $(g,d) = (19,12)$, (ii) there is no 5-secant line, 9-secant conic, nor 13-secant twisted cubic to C. This generalises the classical similar situation for the blow-up of points in P^2. We describe then Sarkisov links constructed from these blow-ups, and are able to prove the existence of Sarkisov links which were previously only known as numerical possibilities.
We construct and study Sarkisov links obtained by blowing up smooth space curves lying on smooth cubic surfaces. We restrict our attention to the case where the blowup is not weak Fano. Together with the results of arXiv:1106.3716 which cover the weak Fano case, we provide a classification of all such curves. This is achieved by computing all curves which satisfy certain necessary criteria on their multisecant curves and then constructing the Sarkisov link step by step.
We classified prime $\mathbb{Q}$-Fano $3$-folds $X$ with only $1/2(1,1,1)$-singularities and with $h^{0}(-K_{X})\geq 4$ a long time ago. The classification was undertaken by blowing up each $X$ at one $1/2(1,1,1)$-singularity and constructing a Sarkisov link. The purpose of this paper is to reveal the geometries behind the Sarkisov links for $X$ in 5 classes. The main result asserts that any $X$ in the 5 classes can be embedded as linear sections into bigger dimensional $\mathbb{Q}$-Fano varieties called key varieties, where the key varieties are constructed by extending partially the Sarkisov…
We study Sarkisov links initiated by the toric weighted blowup of a point in $\mathbb{P}^3$ or $\mathbb{P}^4$ using variation of GIT. We completely classify which of these initiate Sarkisov links and describe the links explicitly. Moreover, if $X$ is the toric weighted blowup of $\mathbb{P}^d$ at a point, we give a simple criterion in terms of the weights of the blowup that characterises when $X$ is weak Fano.
Abstract. In our previous paper arXiv:2210.16008, we show that any prime $\mathbb{Q}$-Fano 3-folds $X$ with only $1/2(1,1,1)$-singularities in certain 5 classes can be embedded as linear sections into bigger dimensional $\mathbb{Q}$-Fano varieties called key varieties, where each of the key varieties is constructed from certain data of the Sarkisov link staring from the blow-up at one $1/2(1,1,1)$-singularity of $X$. In this paper, we introduce varieties associated with the key varieties which are dual in a certain sense. As an application, we interpret a fundamental part of the Sarkisov link …
The purpose of this paper is two-fold. The first is to give a tutorial introduction to the Sarkisov program, a 3-dimensional generalization of Castelnuovo-Nöther Theorem ``untwisting" birational maps between Mori fiber spaces, which was recently established by Corti after Sarkisov and Reid. The second is an attempt to give a logarithmic generalization of the program, introducing the notion of the Sarkisov relation. We give a simple description of the structure of the program and clarify the mechanism of termination connected to the boundedness conjecture of (log) Q-Fano n-folds by Borisov.
We highlight a relation between the existence of Sarkisov links and the finite generation of (certain) Cox rings. We introduce explicit methods to use this relation in order to prove birational rigidity statements. To illustrate, we complete the birational rigidity results of Okada for Fano complete intersection 3-folds in singular weighted projective spaces.
In this paper we consider Q-Fano 3-fold weighted complete intersections of codimension 2 in the 85 families listed in the Iano-Fletcher's list and determine which cycle is a maximal center or not. For each maximal center, we construct either a birational involution which untwists the maximal singularity or a Sarkisov link centered at the cycle to an another explicitly described Mori fiber space. As a consequence, 19 families are proved to be birationally rigid and the remaining 66 families are proved to be birationally nonrigid.
In this paper, we provide examples of Sarkisov links of type II between complex projective Fano threefolds $X$ with $ρ(X) = 1$. To show examples of these links, we study smooth weak Fano threefolds with extremal rays of type $E$. We further assume that the pluri-anticanonical morphism contracts only a finite number of curves. We numerically classify smooth weak Fano threefolds with $ρ(X) = 2$ having an extremal ray of type $E$ both before and after a flop as well as prove the existence of some of these numerical cases.
We determine birational superrigidity for a quasi-smooth prime Fano 3-fold of codimension 4 with no projection centers. In particular we prove birational superrigidity for Fano 3-folds of codimension 4 with no projection centers which are recently constructed by Coughlan and Ducat. We also pose some questions and a conjecture regarding the classification of birationally superrigid Fano 3-folds.
In this paper we study Fano threefolds with a torsion divisor (Fano--Enriques). Due to this torsion divisor, they can be described as quotients of Fano threefolds by a finite abelian group action. We start from lists of Fano threefolds by Reid, Fletcher and Altınok and check which of them admit such an action with a Fano--Enriques quotient.
We construct Q-factorial terminal Fano varieties, starting in dimension 4, whose nef cone jumps when the variety is deformed. It follows that de Fernex and Hacon's results on deformations of 3-dimensional Fanos are optimal. The examples are based on the existence of high-dimensional flips which deform to isomorphisms, generalizing the Mukai flop. We also extend de Fernex and Hacon's positive results on deformations of Fano varieties. Toric Fano varieties which are smooth in codimension 2 and Q-factorial in codimension 3 are rigid. The divisor class group is deformation-invariant for klt Fanos …
We construct families of non-toric $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial terminal Fano ($\mathbb{Q}$-Fano) threefolds of codimension $\geq 20$ corresponding to 54 mutation classes of rigid maximally mutable Laurent polynomials. From the point of view of mirror symmetry, they are the highest codimension (non-toric) $\mathbb{Q}$-Fano varieties for which we can currently establish the Fano/Landau-Ginzburg correspondence. We construct 46 additional $\mathbb{Q}$-Fano threefolds with codimensions of new examples ranging between 19 and 10. Some of these varieties will be presented as toric complete intersections, a…
We generalize the definition of alpha invariant to arbitrary codimension. We also give a lower bound of these alpha invariants for K-semistable Q-Fano varieties and show that we can characterize projective spaces among all K-semistable Fano manifolds in terms of higher codimensional alpha invariants. Our results demonstrate the relation between alpha invariants of any codimension and volumes of Fano manifolds in the characterization of projective spaces.
In this paper we investigate codimension one Fano distributions on Fano manifolds with Picard number one. We classify Fano distributions of maximal index on complete intersections in weighted projective spaces, Fano contact manifolds, Grassmannians of lines and their linear sections, and describe their moduli spaces. As a consequence, we obtain a classification of codimension one del Pezzo distributions on Fano manifolds with Picard number one.
In this paper we extend to the singular setting the theory of Fano foliations developed in our previous paper. A Q-Fano foliation on a complex projective variety X is a foliation F whose anti-canonical class is an ample Q-Cartier divisor. In the spirit of Kobayashi-Ochiai Theorem, we prove that under some conditions the index i of a Q-Fano foliation is bounded by the rank r of F, and classify the cases in which i=r. Next we consider Q-Fano foliations F for which i=r-1. These are called del Pezzo foliations. We classify codimension 1 del Pezzo foliations on mildly singular varieties.
In our previous research, we constructed the affine varieties $Σ_{\mathbb{A}}^{13}$ and $Π_{\mathbb{A}}^{14}$ whose partial projectivizations admit $\mathbb{P}^{2}\times\mathbb{P}^{2}$-fibrations with relative Picard number one. In this paper, we produce prime quasi-smooth $\mathbb{Q}$-Fano 3-folds which are anticanonically embedded of codimension four and belong to 23 (resp.8) classes in the Graded Ring Database [GRDB], as weighted complete intersections in weighted projectivizations of $Σ_{\mathbb{A}}^{13}$ (resp.$Π_{\mathbb{A}}^{14}$ or its cone). We also show that a general member of the a…
We prove that a smooth well formed Fano weighted complete intersection of codimension 2 has a nef partition. We discuss applications of this fact to Mirror Symmetry. In particular we list all nef partitions for smooth well formed Fano weighted complete intersections of dimensions 4 and 5 and present weak Landau--Ginzburg models for them.
We study Q-factorial terminal Fano 3-folds whose equations are modelled on those of the Segre embedding of P^2 x P^2. These lie in codimension 4 in their total anticanonical embedding and have Picard rank 2. They fit into the current state of classification in three different ways. Some families arise as unprojections of degenerations of complete intersections, where the generic unprojection is a known prime Fano 3-fold in codimension 3; these are new, and an analysis of their Gorenstein projections reveals yet other new families. Others represent the "second Tom" unprojection families already…
We calculate the Hodge numbers of quasismooth Fano 3-folds whose total anti-canonical embedding has small codimension, and relate these to the number of deformations.
Cluster algebras give rise to a class of Gorenstein rings which enjoy a large amount of symmetry. Concentrating on the rank 2 cases, we show how cluster varieties can be used to construct many interesting projective algebraic varieties. Our main application is then to construct hundreds of families of Fano 3-folds in codimensions 4 and 5. In particular, for Fano 3-folds in codimension 4 we construct at least one family for 187 of the 206 possible Hilbert polynomials contained in the Graded Ring Database.
We show that Gorenstein singularities that are cones over singular Fano varieties provided by so-called flag quivers are smoothable in codimension three. Moreover, we give a precise characterization about the smoothability in codimension three of the Fano variety itself.
We prove that in the parameter space of $M$-dimensional Fano complete intersections of index one and codimension two the locus of varieties that are not birationally superrigid has codimension at least $\frac12 (M-9)(M-10)-1$.
We compute global log canonical thresholds of certain birationally bi-rigid Fano 3-folds embedded in weighted projective spaces as complete intersections of codimension 2 and prove that they admit an orbifold Kähler-Einstein metric and are K-stable. As an application, we give examples of super-rigid affine Fano 4-folds.
In this paper we study 14 families among 85 families of anticanonically embedded Q-Fano threefolds weighted complete intersections of codimension 2 and show that every quasismooth member is birationally birigid, that is, it is birational to another Q-Fano threefold but not birational to any other Mori fiber space.
We study Fano 3-folds with Fano index 2: that is, 3-folds X with rank Pic(X) = 1, Q-factorial terminal singularities and -K_X = 2A for an ample Weil divisor A. We give a first classification of all possible Hilbert series of such polarised varieties X,A and deduce both the nonvanishing of H^0(X,-K_X) and the sharp bound (-K_X)^3 >= 8/165. We list families that can be realised in codimension up to 4.
Unprojection is a theory due to Reid which constructs more complicated rings starting from simpler data. The idea of unprojection is intended for serial use. Papadakis and Neves developed a theory of parallel unprojection. In the present work we develop a new method of unprojection. Starting from a codimension 3 ideal defined by the pfaffians of a 5x5 skewsymmetric matrix, we use parallel unprojection of Kustin-Miller type in order to construct Gorenstein rings of codimension 6. We give two applications. These are two families of codimension 6 Fano 3-folds, in weighted projective space.
This work is part of the Graded Ring Database project [GRDB], and is a sequel to [Altinok's 1998 PhD thesis] and [Altinok, Brown and Reid, Fano 3-folds, K3 surfaces and graded rings, in SISTAG (Singapore, 2001), Contemp. Math. 314, 2002, pp. 25-53]. We introduce a strategy based on Kustin-Miller unprojection that constructs many hundreds of Gorenstein codimension 4 ideals with 9x16 resolutions (that is, 9 equations and 16 first syzygies). Our two basic games are called Tom and Jerry; the main application is the biregular construction of most of the anticanonically polarised Mori Fano 3-folds o…
We consider Fano sevenfolds $Y$ obtained by intersecting the Grassmannian $\hbox{Gr}(3,6)$ with a codimension 2 linear subspace (with respect to the Plücker embedding). We prove that the motive of $Y$ is Kimura finite-dimensional. We also prove the generalized Hodge conjecture for all powers of $Y$.
In this paper we describe the birational geometry of Fano double spaces $V\stackrelσ{\to}{\mathbb P}^{M+1}$ of index 2 and dimension $\geqslant 8$ with at mostquadratic singularities of rank $\geqslant 8$, satisfying certain additional conditions of general position: we prove that these varieties have no structures of a rationally connected fibre space over a base of dimension $\geqslant 2$, that every birational map $χ\colon V\dashrightarrow V'$ onto the total space of a Mori fibre space $V'/{\mathbb P}^1$ induces an isomorphism $V^+\cong V'$ of the blow up $V^+$ of the variety $V$ along $σ^{…
This is a continuation of a series of papers studying the birational Mori fiber structures of anticanonically embedded $\mathbb{Q}$-Fano $3$-fold weighted complete intersections of codimension $2$. We have proved that $19$ families consists of birationally rigid varieties and $14$ families consists of birationally birigid varieties. The aim of this paper is to continue the work systematically and prove that, among the remaining $52$ families, $21$ families consist of birationally birigid varieties.
We show that five of Reid's Fano 3-fold hyperurfaces containing at least one compound Du Val singularity of type $cA_n$ have pliability at least two. The two elements of the pliability set are the singular hypersurface itself, and another non-isomorphic Fano hypersurface of the same degree, embedded in the same weighted projective space, but with different compound Du Val singularities. The birational map between them is the composition of two birational links initiated by blowing up two Type I centres on a codimension 4 Fano 3-fold of $\mathbb{P}^2 \times \mathbb{P}^2$-type having Picard rank…
In this paper we study smooth, complex Fano 4-folds X with large Picard number rho(X), with techniques from birational geometry. Our main result is that if X is isomorphic in codimension one to the blow-up of a smooth projective 4-fold Y at a point, then rho(X) is at most 12. We give examples of such X with Picard number up to 9. The main theme (and tool) is the study of fixed prime divisors in Fano 4-folds, especially in the case rho(X)>6, in which we give some general results of independent interest.
For a Zariski general (regular) hypersurface $V$ of degree $M$ in the $(M+1)$-dimensional projective space, where $M$ is at least 16, with at most quadratic singularities of rank at least 13, we give a complete description of the structures of rationally connected (or Fano-Mori) fibre space: every such structure over a positive-dimensional base is a pencil of hyperplane sections. This implies, in particular, that $V$ is non-rational and its groups of birational and biregular automorphisms coincide. The set of non-regular hypersurfaces has codimension at least $\frac12(M-11)(M-10)-10$ in the na…
General linear sections of codimension 2 of the Grassmannians G(1,4) and G(1,5) appear in the classification of Fano manifolds of high index. Unlike Grassmannians, these manifolds are not homogeneous. Nevertheless, their automorphisms groups have finitely many orbits. In this work we first compute the orbits of these actions. Then we give a description of the variety of lines (under the Plücker embedding) passing through a fixed point in each orbit of the action. As an application we show that these Fano manifolds are not weakly 2-Fano, completing the classification of weakly 2-Fano manifolds …
References to the works of Iliev-Ranestad and Kuznetsov added. ----- In a first part we detail the construction, on a general Fano 4-fold of genus 9, of a canonical set of four stable vector bundles of rank 2, and prove that they are rigid. Those results were already known by Iliev-Ranestad and Kuznetsov with different purposes. In a second part we show that its variety of lines is an hyperplane section of P1xP1xP1xP1. Then we compute the Chow ring of a general Fano 4-fold, which appears to have a rich structure in codimension 2. The 4-bundles gives embeddings in a Grassmannian G(2,6), and the…
We prove that every projectively normal Fano manifold in $\mathbb{P}^{n+r}$ of index $1$, codimension $r$ and dimension $n\geq 10r$ is birationally superrigid and K-stable. This result was previously proved by Zhuang under the complete intersection assumption.
This paper is devoted to the study of holomorphic distributions of dimension and codimension one on smooth weighted projective complete intersection Fano manifolds threedimensional, with Picard number equal to one. We study the relations between algebro-geometric properties of the singular set of singular holomorphic distributions and their associated sheaves. We characterize either distributions whose tangent sheaf or conormal sheaf are arithmetically Cohen Macaulay (aCM) on smooth weighted projective complete intersection Fano manifolds threefold. We also prove that a codimension one locally…
Let X be a (smooth, complex) Fano 4-fold. For any prime divisor D in X, consider the image of N_1(D) in N_1(X) under the push-forward of 1-cycles, and let c_D be its codimension in N_1(X). We define an integral invariant c_X of X as the maximal c_D, where D varies among all prime divisors in X. One easily sees that c_X is at most rho_X-1 (where rho is the Picard number), and that c_X is greater or equal than rho_X-rho_D, for any prime divisor D in X. We know from previous works that if c_X > 2, then either X is a product of Del Pezzo surfaces and rho_X is at most 18, or c_X=3 and rho_X is at m…
We classify codimension two analytic submanifolds X of projective space having the property that any line through a general point p having contact to order two with X at p automatically has contact to order three. We give applications to the study of the Debarre--de Jong conjecture, and of n-dimensional varieties whose Fano variety of lines has dimension 2n-4.
We prove that every smooth Fano complete intersection of index $1$ and codimension $r$ in $\mathbb{P}^{n+r}$ is birationally superrigid and K-stable if $n\ge 10r$. We also propose a generalization of Tian's criterion of K-stability and, as an application, prove the K-stability of the complete intersection of a quadric and a cubic in $\mathbb{P}^5$. In the appendix (written jointly with C. Stibitz), we prove the conditional birational superrigidity of Fano complete intersections of higher index in large dimension.
We study congruences of lines $X_ω$ defined by a sufficiently general choice of an alternating 3-form $ω$ in $n+1$ dimensions, as Fano manifolds of index $3$ and dimension $n-1$. These congruences include the $\mathrm{G}_2$-variety for $n=6$ and the variety of reductions of projected $\mathbb{P}^2 \times \mathbb{P}^2$ for $n=7$. We compute the degree of $X_ω$ as the $n$-th Fine number and study the Hilbert scheme of these congruences proving that the choice of $ω$ bijectively corresponds to $X_ω$ except when $n=5$. The fundamental locus of the congruence is also studied together with its singu…
There exist exactly 166 4-dimensional reflexive polytopes such that the corresponding 4-dimensional Gorenstein toric Fano varieties have at worst terminal singularities in codimension 3 and their anticanonical divisor is divisible by 2. For every such a polytope, one naturally obtains a family of Fano hypersurfaces X with at worst conifold singularities. A generic 3-dimensional Fano hypersurface X can be interpreted as a flat conifold degeneration of some smooth Fano 3-folds Y whose classification up to deformation was obtained by Iskovskikh, Mori and Mukai. In this case, both Fano varieties X…
