Query-by-example (QbE) speech search is the task of matching spoken queries to utterances within a search collection. In low- or zero-resource settings, QbE search is often addressed with approaches based on dynamic time warping (DTW). Recent work has found that methods based on acoustic word embeddings (AWEs) can improve both performance and search speed. However, prior work on AWE-based QbE has primarily focused on English data and with single-word queries. In this work, we generalize AWE training to spans of words, producing acoustic span embeddings (ASE), and explore the application of ASE to QbE with arbitrary-length queries in multiple unseen languages. We consider the commonly used setting where we have access to labeled data in other languages (in our case, several low-resource languages) distinct from the unseen test languages. We evaluate our approach on the QUESST 2015 QbE tasks, finding that multilingual ASE-based search is much faster than DTW-based search and outperforms the best previously published results on this task.
Multilingual speech recognition has drawn significant attention as an effective way to compensate data scarcity for low-resource languages. End-to-end (e2e) modelling is preferred over conventional hybrid systems, mainly because of no lexicon requirement. However, hybrid DNN-HMMs still outperform e2e models in limited data scenarios. Furthermore, the problem of manual lexicon creation has been alleviated by publicly available trained models of grapheme-to-phoneme (G2P) and text to IPA transliteration for a lot of languages. In this paper, a novel approach of hybrid DNN-HMM acoustic models fusi…

Acoustic word embeddings (AWEs) are vector representations of spoken word segments. AWEs can be learned jointly with embeddings of character sequences, to generate phonetically meaningful embeddings of written words, or acoustically grounded word embeddings (AGWEs). Such embeddings have been used to improve speech retrieval, recognition, and spoken term discovery. In this work, we extend this idea to multiple low-resource languages. We jointly train an AWE model and an AGWE model, using phonetically transcribed data from multiple languages. The pre-trained models can then be used for unseen ze…
In this work, we explore the benefits of using multilingual bottleneck features (mBNF) in acoustic modelling for the automatic speech recognition of code-switched (CS) speech in African languages. The unavailability of annotated corpora in the languages of interest has always been a primary challenge when developing speech recognition systems for this severely under-resourced type of speech. Hence, it is worthwhile to investigate the potential of using speech corpora available for other better-resourced languages to improve speech recognition performance. To achieve this, we train a mBNF extra…

We study multilingual AMR parsing from the perspective of knowledge distillation, where the aim is to learn and improve a multilingual AMR parser by using an existing English parser as its teacher. We constrain our exploration in a strict multilingual setting: there is but one model to parse all different languages including English. We identify that noisy input and precise output are the key to successful distillation. Together with extensive pre-training, we obtain an AMR parser whose performances surpass all previously published results on four different foreign languages, including German,…
The segmentation of emails into functional zones (also dubbed email zoning) is a relevant preprocessing step for most NLP tasks that deal with emails. However, despite the multilingual character of emails and their applications, previous literature regarding email zoning corpora and systems was developed essentially for English. In this paper, we analyse the existing email zoning corpora and propose a new multilingual benchmark composed of 625 emails in Portuguese, Spanish and French. Moreover, we introduce OKAPI, the first multilingual email segmentation model based on a language agnostic sen…

Sequence-to-sequence attention-based models integrate an acoustic, pronunciation and language model into a single neural network, which make them very suitable for multilingual automatic speech recognition (ASR). In this paper, we are concerned with multilingual speech recognition on low-resource languages by a single Transformer, one of sequence-to-sequence attention-based models. Sub-words are employed as the multilingual modeling unit without using any pronunciation lexicon. First, we show that a single multilingual ASR Transformer performs well on low-resource languages despite of some lan…

We leverage pre-trained language models to solve the task of complex NER for two low-resource languages: Chinese and Spanish. We use the technique of Whole Word Masking(WWM) to boost the performance of masked language modeling objective on large and unsupervised corpora. We experiment with multiple neural network architectures, incorporating CRF, BiLSTMs, and Linear Classifiers on top of a fine-tuned BERT layer. All our models outperform the baseline by a significant margin and our best performing model obtains a competitive position on the evaluation leaderboard for the blind test set.
Multilingual automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems mostly benefit low resource languages but suffer degradation in performance across several languages relative to their monolingual counterparts. Limited studies have focused on understanding the languages behaviour in the multilingual speech recognition setups. In this paper, a novel data-driven approach is proposed to investigate the cross-lingual acoustic-phonetic similarities. This technique measures the similarities between posterior distributions from various monolingual acoustic models against a target speech signal. Deep neural net…
As natural language processing systems become more widespread, it is necessary to address fairness issues in their implementation and deployment to ensure that their negative impacts on society are understood and minimized. However, there is limited work that studies fairness using a multilingual and intersectional framework or on downstream tasks. In this paper, we introduce four multilingual Equity Evaluation Corpora, supplementary test sets designed to measure social biases, and a novel statistical framework for studying unisectional and intersectional social biases in natural language proc…

Acoustic word embeddings (AWEs) are fixed-dimensional representations of variable-length speech segments. For zero-resource languages where labelled data is not available, one AWE approach is to use unsupervised autoencoder-based recurrent models. Another recent approach is to use multilingual transfer: a supervised AWE model is trained on several well-resourced languages and then applied to an unseen zero-resource language. We consider how a recent contrastive learning loss can be used in both the purely unsupervised and multilingual transfer settings. Firstly, we show that terms from an unsu…

Multilingual Transformer-based language models, usually pretrained on more than 100 languages, have been shown to achieve outstanding results in a wide range of cross-lingual transfer tasks. However, it remains unknown whether the optimization for different languages conditions the capacity of the models to generalize over syntactic structures, and how languages with syntactic phenomena of different complexity are affected. In this work, we explore the syntactic generalization capabilities of the monolingual and multilingual versions of BERT and RoBERTa. More specifically, we evaluate the synt…
Multilingual training has been shown to improve acoustic modeling performance by sharing and transferring knowledge in modeling different languages. Knowledge sharing is usually achieved by using common lower-level layers for different languages in a deep neural network. Recently, the domain adversarial network was proposed to reduce domain mismatch of training data and learn domain-invariant features. It is thus worth exploring whether adversarial training can further promote knowledge sharing in multilingual models. In this work, we apply the domain adversarial network to encourage the share…

We present a novel supervised word alignment method based on cross-language span prediction. We first formalize a word alignment problem as a collection of independent predictions from a token in the source sentence to a span in the target sentence. As this is equivalent to a SQuAD v2.0 style question answering task, we then solve this problem by using multilingual BERT, which is fine-tuned on a manually created gold word alignment data. We greatly improved the word alignment accuracy by adding the context of the token to the question. In the experiments using five word alignment datasets amon…

The first edition of the IberLEF 2021 shared task on automatic detection of borrowings (ADoBo) focused on detecting lexical borrowings that appeared in the Spanish press and that have recently been imported into the Spanish language. In this work, we tested supplementary training on intermediate labeled-data tasks (STILTs) from part of speech (POS), named entity recognition (NER), code-switching, and language identification approaches to the classification of borrowings at the token level using existing pre-trained transformer-based language models. Our extensive experimental results suggest t…

Multilingual Speech Recognition is one of the most costly AI problems, because each language (7,000+) and even different accents require their own acoustic models to obtain best recognition performance. Even though they all use the same phoneme symbols, each language and accent imposes its own coloring or "twang". Many adaptive approaches have been proposed, but they require further training, additional data and generally are inferior to monolingually trained models. In this paper, we propose a different approach that uses a large multilingual model that is \emph{modulated} by the codes genera…

The lack of wide coverage datasets annotated with everyday metaphorical expressions for languages other than English is striking. This means that most research on supervised metaphor detection has been published only for that language. In order to address this issue, this work presents the first corpus annotated with naturally occurring metaphors in Spanish large enough to develop systems to perform metaphor detection. The presented dataset, CoMeta, includes texts from various domains, namely, news, political discourse, Wikipedia and reviews. In order to label CoMeta, we apply the MIPVU method…

Acoustic word embeddings are fixed-dimensional representations of variable-length speech segments. In settings where unlabelled speech is the only available resource, such embeddings can be used in "zero-resource" speech search, indexing and discovery systems. Here we propose to train a single supervised embedding model on labelled data from multiple well-resourced languages and then apply it to unseen zero-resource languages. For this transfer learning approach, we consider two multilingual recurrent neural network models: a discriminative classifier trained on the joint vocabularies of all t…
This paper analyzes dysarthric speech datasets from three languages with different prosodic systems: English, Korean, and Tamil. We inspect 39 acoustic measurements which reflect three speech dimensions including voice quality, pronunciation, and prosody. As multilingual analysis, examination on the mean values of acoustic measurements by intelligibility levels is conducted. Further, automatic intelligibility classification is performed to scrutinize the optimal feature set by languages. Analyses suggest pronunciation features, such as Percentage of Correct Consonants, Percentage of Correct Vo…

The interest in offensive content identification in social media has grown substantially in recent years. Previous work has dealt mostly with post level annotations. However, identifying offensive spans is useful in many ways. To help coping with this important challenge, we present MUDES, a multilingual system to detect offensive spans in texts. MUDES features pre-trained models, a Python API for developers, and a user-friendly web-based interface. A detailed description of MUDES' components is presented in this paper.

Acoustic word embeddings are fixed-dimensional representations of variable-length speech segments. Such embeddings can form the basis for speech search, indexing and discovery systems when conventional speech recognition is not possible. In zero-resource settings where unlabelled speech is the only available resource, we need a method that gives robust embeddings on an arbitrary language. Here we explore multilingual transfer: we train a single supervised embedding model on labelled data from multiple well-resourced languages and then apply it to unseen zero-resource languages. We consider thr…
In this paper, we propose a method to extract bilingual texts automatically from noisy parallel corpora by framing the problem as a token-level span prediction, such as SQuAD-style Reading Comprehension. To extract a span of the target document that is a translation of a given source sentence (span), we use either QANet or multilingual BERT. QANet can be trained for a specific parallel corpus from scratch, while multilingual BERT can utilize pre-trained multilingual representations. For the span prediction method using QANet, we introduce a total optimization method using integer linear progra…

Span-extraction reading comprehension models have made tremendous advances enabled by the availability of large-scale, high-quality training datasets. Despite such rapid progress and widespread application, extractive reading comprehension datasets in languages other than English remain scarce, and creating such a sufficient amount of training data for each language is costly and even impossible. An alternative to creating large-scale high-quality monolingual span-extraction training datasets is to develop multilingual modeling approaches and systems which can transfer to the target language w…
Code-switching is the use of more than one language in the same conversation or utterance. We present an evaluation benchmark, GLUECoS, for code-switched languages, that spans several NLP tasks in English-Hindi and English-Spanish. Specifically, our evaluation benchmark includes Language Identification from text, POS tagging, Named Entity Recognition, Sentiment Analysis, Question Answering and a new task for code-switching, Natural L…
Acoustic word embedding models map variable duration speech segments to fixed dimensional vectors, enabling efficient speech search and discovery. Previous work explored how embeddings can be obtained in zero-resource settings where no labelled data is available in the target language. The current best approach uses transfer learning: a single supervised multilingual model is trained using labelled data from multiple well-resourced languages and then applied to a target zero-resource language (without fine-tuning). However, it is still unclear how the specific choice of training languages affe…
We describe an LSTM-based model which we call Byte-to-Span (BTS) that reads text as bytes and outputs span annotations of the form [start, length, label] where start positions, lengths, and labels are separate entries in our vocabulary. Because we operate directly on unicode bytes rather than language-specific words or characters, we can analyze text in many languages with a single model. Due to the small vocabulary size, these multilingual models are very compact, but produce results similar to or better than the state-of- the-art in Part-of-Speech tagging and Named Entity Recognition that us…
The present study tackles the problem of automatically discovering spoken keywords from untranscribed audio archives without requiring word-by-word speech transcription by automatic speech recognition (ASR) technology. The problem is of practical significance in many applications of speech analytics, including those concerning low-resource languages, and large amount of multilingual and multi-genre data. We propose a two-stage approach, which comprises unsupervised acoustic modeling and decoding, followed by pattern mining in acoustic unit sequences. The whole process starts by deriving and mo…

The use of phonological features (PFs) potentially allows language-specific phones to remain linked in training, which is highly desirable for information sharing for multilingual and crosslingual speech recognition methods for low-resourced languages. A drawback suffered by previous methods in using phonological features is that the acoustic-to-PF extraction in a bottom-up way is itself difficult. In this paper, we propose to join phonology driven phone embedding (top-down) and deep neural network (DNN) based acoustic feature extraction (bottom-up) to calculate phone probabilities. The new me…

We present GrammarTagger, an open-source grammar profiler which, given an input text, identifies grammatical features useful for language education. The model architecture enables it to learn from a small amount of texts annotated with spans and their labels, which 1) enables easier and more intuitive annotation, 2) supports overlapping spans, and 3) is less prone to error propagation, compared to complex hand-crafted rules defined on constituency/dependency parses. We show that we can bootstrap a grammar profiler model with $F_1 \approx 0.6$ from only a couple hundred sentences both in Englis…
While pretrained encoders have achieved success in various natural language understanding (NLU) tasks, there is a gap between these pretrained encoders and natural language generation (NLG). NLG tasks are often based on the encoder-decoder framework, where the pretrained encoders can only benefit part of it. To reduce this gap, we introduce DeltaLM, a pretrained multilingual encoder-decoder model that regards the decoder as the task layer of off-the-shelf pretrained encoders. Specifically, we augment the pretrained multilingual encoder with a decoder and pre-train it in a self-supervised way. …
In this paper, we present coreference resolution experiments with a newly created multilingual corpus CorefUD. We focus on the following languages: Czech, Russian, Polish, German, Spanish, and Catalan. In addition to monolingual experiments, we combine the training data in multilingual experiments and train two joined models -- for Slavic languages and for all the languages together. We rely on an end-to-end deep learning model that we slightly adapted for the CorefUD corpus. Our results show that we can profit from harmonized annotations, and using joined models helps significantly for the la…

This paper extends the task of probing sentence representations for linguistic insight in a multilingual domain. In doing so, we make two contributions: first, we provide datasets for multilingual probing, derived from Wikipedia, in five languages, viz. English, French, German, Spanish and Russian. Second, we evaluate six sentence encoders for each language, each trained by mapping sentence representations to English sentence representations, using sentences in a parallel corpus. We discover that cross-lingually mapped representations are often better at retaining certain linguistic informatio…

News articles, image captions, product reviews and many other texts mention people and organizations whose name recognition could vary for different audiences. In such cases, background information about the named entities could be provided in the form of an appositive noun phrase, either written by a human or generated automatically. We expand on the previous work in appositive generation with a new, more realistic, end-to-end definition of the task, instantiated by a dataset that spans four languages (English, Spanish, German and Polish), two entity types (person and organization) and two do…
Pretrained multilingual language models can help bridge the digital language divide, enabling high-quality NLP models for lower resourced languages. Studies of multilingual models have so far focused on performance, consistency, and cross-lingual generalisation. However, with their wide-spread application in the wild and downstream societal impact, it is important to put multilingual models under the same scrutiny as monolingual models. This work investigates the group fairness of multilingual models, asking whether these models are equally fair across languages. To this end, we create a new f…
