Preparing strongly-coupled particle states on quantum computers requires large resources. In this work, we show how classical sampling coupled with projection operators can be used to compute Minkowski matrix elements without explicitly preparing these states on the quantum computer. We demonstrate this for the 2+1d $\mathbb{Z}_2$ lattice gauge theory on small lattices with a quantum simulator.

We perform a digital quantum simulation of a gauge theory with a topological term in Minkowski spacetime, which is practically inaccessible by standard lattice Monte Carlo simulations. We focus on $1+1$ dimensional quantum electrodynamics with the $θ$-term known as the Schwinger model. We construct the true vacuum state of a lattice Schwinger model using adiabatic state preparation which, in turn, allows us to compute an expectation value of the fermion mass operator with respect to the vacuum. Upon taking a continuum limit we find that our result in massless case agrees with the known exact r…
Studying QCD and other gauge theories on quantum hardware requires the preparation of physically interesting states. The Variational Quantum Eigensolver (VQE) provides a way of performing vacuum state preparation on quantum hardware. In this work, VQE is applied to pure SU(3) lattice Yang-Mills on a single plaquette and one dimensional plaquette chains. Bayesian optimization and gradient descent were investigated for performing the classical optimization. Ansatz states for plaquette chains are constructed in a scalable manner from smaller systems using domain decomposition and a stitching proc…
Variational minimization of tensor network states enables the exploration of low energy states of lattice gauge theories. However, the exact numerical evaluation of high-dimensional tensor network states remains challenging in general. In [E. Zohar, J. I. Cirac, Phys. Rev. D 97, 034510 (2018)] it was shown how, by combining gauged Gaussian projected entangled pair states with a variational Monte Carlo procedure, it is possible to efficiently compute physical observables. In this paper we demonstrate how this approach can be used to investigate numerically the ground state of a lattice gauge th…
We propose a scheme for digital quantum simulation of lattice gauge theories with dynamical fermions. Using a layered optical lattice with ancilla atoms that can move and interact with the other atoms (simulating the physical degrees of freedom), we obtain a stroboscopic dynamics which yields the four-body plaquette interactions, arising in models with $2+1$ and higher dimensions, without the use of perturbation theory. As an example we show how to simulate a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ model in $2+1$ dimensions.
In $SU(N)$ gauge theory, it is argued recently that there exists a "mixed anomaly" between the CP symmetry and the 1-form $\mathbb{Z}_N$ symmetry at $θ=π$, and the anomaly matching requires CP to be spontaneously broken at $θ=π$ if the system is in the confining phase. In this paper, we elaborate on this discussion by examining the large volume behavior of the partition functions of the $SU(N)/\mathbb{Z}_N$ theory on $T^4$ a la 't Hooft. The periodicity of the partition function in $θ$, which is not $2π$ due to fractional instanton numbers, suggests the presence of a phase transition at $θ=π$.…
For a particular lattice gauge theory with ${\mathbb Z}_2$ gauge invariance there is confinement for all couplings. The gauge fields, on lattice links, lie in the closed interval $[-1,1]$. It is proved that the expectation value of a gauge-invariant loop operator decays as the exponential of minus the area.
We devise a unitary transformation that replaces the fermionic degrees of freedom of lattice gauge theories by (hard-core) bosonic ones. The resulting theory is local and gauge invariant, with the same symmetry group. The method works in any spatial dimensions and can be directly applied, among others, to the gauge groups $G=U(N)$ and $SU(2N)$, where $N\in\mathbb{N}$. For $SU(2N+1)$ one can also carry out the transformation after introducing an extra idle $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge field, so that the resulting symmetry group trivially contains $\mathbb{Z}_2$ as a normal subgroup. Those results have …
We construct a non-trivial $U(1)/\mathbb{Z}_q$ principal bundle on~$T^4$ from the compact $U(1)$ lattice gauge field by generalizing Lüscher's constriction so that the cocycle condition contains $\mathbb{Z}_q$ elements (the 't~Hooft flux). The construction requires an admissibility condition on lattice gauge field configurations. From the transition function so constructed, we have the fractional topological charge that is $\mathbb{Z}_q$ one-form gauge invariant and odd under the lattice time reversal transformation. Assuming a rescaling of the vacuum angle $θ\to qθ$ suggested from the Witten …
Under the perspective of realizing analog quantum simulations of lattice gauge theories, ladder geometries offer an intriguing playground, relevant for ultracold atom experiments. Here, we investigate Hamiltonian lattice gauge theories defined in two-leg ladders. We consider a model that includes both gauge boson and Higgs matter degrees of freedom with local $\mathbb{Z}_N$ gauge symmetries. We study its phase diagram based on both an effective low-energy field theory and density matrix renormalization group simulations. For $N\ge 5$, an extended gapless Coulomb phase emerges, which is separat…
We explore topological defects in the 4-dimensional pure $\mathbb{Z}_2$ lattice gauge theory. This theory has 1-form $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ center symmetry as well as the Kramers-Wannier-Wegner (KWW) duality. We construct the KWW duality topological defects in the similar way to that constructed by Aasen, Mong, Fendley arXiv:1601.07185 for the 2-dimensional Ising model. These duality defects turn out to be non-invertible. We also construct the 1-form $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ symmetry defects as well as the junctions among KWW duality defects and 1-form $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ center symmetry defects. The crossing …
We present a quantum algorithm for digital quantum simulation of the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge-Higgs model on a $3\times 3$ lattice, which is based on Trotter decomposition, the quantum adiabatic algorithm and its circuit realization. Then we perform a classical demonstration, dubbed a pseudoquantum simulation, on a GPU simulator. We obtain useful results on this model, which suggest the topological properties of the deconfined phase and help to clarify the phase diagram. It is suggested that the tricitical point, where the second-order critical lines of deconfinement-confinement transition and of …
Lattice gauge theories are a powerful language to theoretically describe a variety of strongly correlated systems, including frustrated magnets, high-$T_c$ superconductors, and topological phases. However, in many cases gauge fields couple to gapless matter degrees of freedom and such theories become notoriously difficult to analyze quantitatively. In this paper we study several examples of $\mathbb{Z}_2$ lattice gauge theories with gapless fermions at finite density, in one and two spatial dimensions, that are either exactly soluble or whose solution reduces to that of a known problem. We con…
We present a detailed study of the topological Schwinger model [Phys. Rev. D 99, 014503 (2019)], which describes (1+1) quantum electrodynamics of an Abelian $U(1)$ gauge field coupled to a symmetry-protected topological matter sector, by means of a class of $\mathbb{Z}_N$ lattice gauge theories. Employing density-matrix renormalization group techniques that exactly implement Gauss' law, we show that these models host a correlated topological phase for different values of $N$, where fermion correlations arise through inter-particle interactions mediated by the gauge field. Moreover, by a carefu…
We propose an implementation of a two-dimensional $\mathbb{Z}_2$ lattice gauge theory model on a shallow quantum circuit, involving a number of single and two-qubits gates comparable to what can be achieved with present-day and near-future technologies. The ground state preparation is numerically analyzed on a small lattice with a variational quantum algorithm, which requires a small number of parameters to reach high fidelities and can be efficiently scaled up on larger systems. Despite the reduced size of the lattice we consider, a transition between confined and deconfined regimes can be de…
Quantum simulation of lattice gauge theories (LGTs), aiming at tackling non-perturbative particle and condensed matter physics, has recently received a lot of interest and attention, resulting in many theoretical proposals, as well as several experimental implementations. One of the current challenges is to go beyond 1+1 dimensions, where four-body (plaquette) interactions, not contained naturally in quantum simulating devices, appear. In this Letter, we propose a method to obtain them based on a combination of stroboscopic optical atomic control and the non-local photon-mediated interactions …
Tensor network states, and in particular Projected Entangled Pair States (PEPS) have been a strong ansatz for the variational study of complicated quantum many-body systems, thanks to their built-in entanglement entropy area law. In this work, we use a special kind of PEPS - Gauged Gaussian Fermionic PEPS (GGFPEPS) to find the ground state of $2+1d$ dimensional pure $\mathbb{Z}_2$ lattice gauge theories for a wide range of coupling constants. We do so by combining PEPS methods with Monte-Carlo computations, allowing for efficient contraction of the PEPS and computation of correlation functions…
We investigate the rich quantum phase diagram of Wegner's theory of discrete Ising gauge fields interacting with $U(1)$ symmetric single-component fermion matter hopping on a two-dimensional square lattice. In particular limits the model reduces to (i) pure $\mathbb{Z}_2$ even and odd gauge theories, (ii) free fermions in a static background of deconfined $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge fields, (iii) the kinetic Rokhsar-Kivelson quantum dimer model at a generic dimer filling. We develop a local transformation that maps the lattice gauge theory onto a model of $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge-invariant spin $1/2$ deg…
Trotter decomposition is the basis of the digital quantum simulation. Asymmetric and symmetric decompositions are used in our GPU demonstration of the digital adiabatic quantum simulations of $2+1$ dimensional quantum $\mathbb{Z}_2$ lattice gauge theory. The actual errors in Trotter decompositions are investigated as functions of the coupling parameter and the number of Trotter substeps in each step of the variation of coupling parameter. The relative error of energy is shown to be closely related to the Trotter error usually defined defined in terms of the evolution operators. They are much s…
A new formalism for lattice gauge theory is developed that preserves Poincaré symmetry in a discrete universe. We define the $\mathbb{1}$-loop, a generalization of the Wilson loop that reformulates classical differential equations of motion as identity-valued multiplicative loops of Lie group elements of the form ${[g_1\cdots g_n]=\mathbb{1}}$. A lattice Poincaré gauge theory of gravity is thus derived that employs a novel matter field construction and recovers Einstein's vacuum equations in the appropriate limit.
Practical quantum computing holds clear promise in addressing problems not generally tractable with classical simulation techniques, and some key physically interesting applications are those of real-time dynamics in strongly coupled lattice gauge theories. In this article, we benchmark the real-time dynamics of $\mathbb{Z}_2$ and $U(1)$ gauge invariant plaquette models using noisy intermediate scale quantum (NISQ) hardware, specifically the superconducting-qubit-based quantum IBM Q computers. We design quantum circuits for models of increasing complexity and measure physical observables such …
We simulate a zero-temperature pure $\mathbb{Z}_3$ Lattice Gauge Theory in 2+1 dimensions by using an iPEPS (Infinite Projected Entangled-Pair State) ansatz for the ground state. Our results are therefore directly valid in the thermodynamic limit. They clearly show two distinct phases separated by a phase transition. We introduce an update strategy that enables plaquette terms and Gauss-law constraints to be applied as sequences of two-body operators. This allows the use of the most up-to-date iPEPS algorithms. From the calculation of spatial Wilson loops we are able to prove the existence of …
The low-lying Dirac modes become localised at the finite-temperature transition in QCD and in other gauge theories, suggesting a general connection between their localisation and deconfinement. The simplest model where this connection can be tested is $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge theory in 2+1 dimensions. We show that in this model the low modes in the staggered Dirac spectrum are delocalised in the confined phase and become localised in the deconfined phase. We also show that localised modes correlate with disorder in the Polyakov loop configuration, in agreement with the "sea/island" picture of loca…
We consider compact $U^κ(1)$ gauge theory in 3+1D with the $2π$-quantized topological term ${\sum_{I, J =1}^κ\frac{K_{IJ}}{4π}\int_{M^4}F^I\wedge F^J}$. At energies below the gauge charges' gaps but above the monopoles' gaps, this field theory has an emergent ${\mathbb{Z}_{k_1}^{(1)}\times\mathbb{Z}_{k_2}^{(1)}\times\cdots}$ 1-symmetry, where $k_i$ are the diagonal elements of the Smith normal form of $K$ and $\mathbb{Z}_{0}^{(1)}$ is regarded as $U(1)^{(1)}$. In the $U^κ(1)$ confined phase, the boundary's IR properties are described by Chern-Simons field theory and has a ${\mathbb{Z}_{k_1}^{(…
We investigate the interplay of quantum one-dimensional discrete $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge fields and fermion matter near full filling in terms of deconfined fractionalized hole excitations that constitute mobile domain walls between vacua that break spontaneously translation symmetry. In the limit of strong string tension, we uncover emergent integrable correlated hopping dynamics of holes which is complementary to the constrained XXZ description in terms of bosonic dimers. We analyze numerically quantum dynamics of spreading of an isolated hole together with the associated time evolution of entan…
We study the localization properties of the eigenmodes of the staggered Dirac operator across the deconfinement transition in finite-temperature $\mathbb{Z}_3$ pure gauge theory on the lattice in 2+1 dimensions. This allows for nontrivial tests of the sea-islands picture of localization, according to which low modes should localize on favorable Polyakov-loop fluctuations in the deconfined phase of a gauge theory. We observe localized low modes in the deconfined phase of the theory, both in the real Polyakov-loop sector, where they are expected, and in the complex Polyakov-loop sectors, where t…
We present a method for constructing classically perfect anisotropic actions for SU(3) gauge theory based on a present isotropic Fixed Point Action. The action is parametrised using smeared (``fat'') links. The construction is done explicitly for anisotropy $ξ=a_s/a_t=2,4$ and the renormalised anisotropies are determined using the torelon dispersion relation. Quantities such as the static quark-antiquark potential, the critical temperature of the deconfining phase transition and the low-lying glueball spectrum are measured as well. It turns out that the procedure presented works, the renormali…
