Under the perspective of realizing analog quantum simulations of lattice gauge theories, ladder geometries offer an intriguing playground, relevant for ultracold atom experiments. Here, we investigate Hamiltonian lattice gauge theories defined in two-leg ladders. We consider a model that includes both gauge boson and Higgs matter degrees of freedom with local $\mathbb{Z}_N$ gauge symmetries. We study its phase diagram based on both an effective low-energy field theory and density matrix renormalization group simulations. For $N\ge 5$, an extended gapless Coulomb phase emerges, which is separated by a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transition from the surrounding gapped phase. Besides the traditional confined and Higgs regimes, we also observe a novel quadrupolar region, originated by the ladder geometry.
We consider interacting bosonic particles on a two-leg triangular ladder in the presence of an artificial gauge field. We employ density matrix renormalization group numerical simulations and analytical bosonization calculations to study the rich phase diagram of this system. We show that the interplay between the frustration induced by the triangular lattice geometry and the interactions gives rise to multiple chiral quantum phases. Phase transition between superfluid to Mott-insulating states occur, which can have Meissner or vortex character. Furthermore, a state that explicitly breaks the …
Quantum systems in contact with an environment display a rich physics emerging from the interplay between dissipative and Hamiltonian terms. Here we focus on the role of the geometry of the coupling between the system and the baths. In the specific we consider a dissipative boundary driven ladder in presence of a gauge field which can be implemented with ion microtraps arrays. We show that, depending on the geometry, the currents imposed by the baths can be strongly affected by the gauge field resulting in non-equilibrium phase transitions. In different phases both the magnitude of the current…
We propose to periodically modulate the onsite energy via two-tone drives, which can be furthermore used to engineer artificial gauge potential. As an example, we show that the fermionic ladder model penetrated with effective magnetic flux can be constructed by superconducting flux qubits using such two-tone-drive-engineered artificial gauge potential. In this superconducting system, the single-particle ground state can range from vortex phase to Meissner phase due to the competition between the interleg coupling strength and the effective magnetic flux. We also present the method to experimen…
Studies of free particles in low-dimensional quantum systems such as two-leg ladders provide insight into the influence of statistics on collective behaviour. The behaviours of bosons and fermions are well understood, but two-dimensional systems also admit excitations with alternative statistics known as anyons. Numerical analysis of hard-core $\mathbb{Z}_3$ anyons on the ladder reveals qualitatively distinct behaviour, including a novel phase transition associated with crystallisation of hole degrees of freedom into a periodic foam. Qualitative predictions are extrapolated for all Abelian $\m…
We consider the spectrum of a $U(1)$ quantum link model where gauge fields are realized as $S=1/2$ spins and demonstrate a new mechanism for generating quantum many-body scars (high-energy eigenstates that violate the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis) in a constrained Hilbert space. Many-body dynamics with local constraints has attracted much attention due to the recent discovery of non-ergodic behavior in quantum simulators based on Rydberg atoms. Lattice gauge theories provide natural examples of constrained systems since physical states must be gauge-invariant. In our case, the Hamilton…

In this work we propose two protocols to make an effective gauge potential for microwave photons in circuit QED. The schemes consist of coupled transmons whose flux are harmonically modulated in time. We investigate the effect of various types of capacitive and inductive couplings, and the role of the fixed phase offset of each site on the complex coupling rate between coupled qubits. These configurations can be directly realised in a superconducting circuit and is easily extendable to a scalable lattice. Due to the intrinsic non-linearity of the transmon qubits such lattices would be an ideal…
Quantum simulations would be highly desirable in order to investigate the finite density physics of QCD. $(1+1)$-d $\mathbb{C}P(N-1)$ quantum field theories are toy models that share many important features of QCD: they are asymptotically free, have a non-perturbatively generated massgap, as well as $θ$-vacua. $SU(N)$ quantum spin ladders provide an unconventional regularization of $\mathbb{C}P(N-1)$ models that is well-suited for quantum simulation with ultracold alkaline-earth atoms in an optical lattice. In order to validate future quantum simulation experiments of $\mathbb{C}P(2)$ models a…
We consider a rather general version of ladder operator $Z$ used by some authors in few recent papers, $[H_0,Z]=λZ$ for some $λ\in\mathbb{R}$, $H_0=H_0^\dagger$, and we show that several interesting results can be deduced from this formula. Then we extend it in two ways: first we replace the original equality with formula $[H_0,Z]=λZ[Z^\dagger, Z]$, and secondly we consider $[H,Z]=λZ$ for some $λ\in\mathbb{C}$, $H\neq H^\dagger$. In both cases many applications are discussed. In particular we consider factorizable Hamiltonians and Hamiltonians written in terms of operators satisfying the gener…
We propose a novel type of a Bose-Hubbard ladder model based on an open quantum-gas--cavity-QED setup to study the physics of dynamical gauge potentials. Atomic tunneling along opposite directions in the two legs of the ladder is mediated by photon scattering from transverse pump lasers to two distinct cavity modes. The resulting interplay between cavity photon dissipation and the optomechanical atomic back-action then induces an average-density-dependent dynamical gauge field. The dissipation-stabilized steady-state atomic motion along the legs of the ladder leads either to a pure chiral curr…
We observe Wannier-Stark localization in curved photonic lattices, realized using arrays of evanescently coupled optical waveguides. By correctly tuning the strength of inter-site coupling in the lattice, we observe that Wannier-Stark states become increasingly localized, and eventually fully localized to one site, as the curvature of the lattice is increased. We then demonstrate that tunneling can be successfully restored in the lattice by applying a sinusoidal modulation to the lattice position, an effect that is a direct analogue of photon-assisted tunneling. This precise tuning of the tunn…
The Fock-like representations of the Relative Parabose Set (\textsc{Rpbs}) algebra in a single parabosonic and a single parafermionic degree of freedom are investigated. It is shown that there is an infinite family (parametrized by the values of a positive integer $p$) of infinite dimensional, non-equivalent, irreducible representations. For each one of them, explicit expressions are computed for the action of the generators and they are shown to be ladder operators (creation-annihilation operators) on the specified Fock-spaces. It is proved that each one of these inf. dim. Fock-spaces is irre…
Ladder models of ultracold atoms offer a versatile platform for the experimental and theoretical study of different phenomena and phases of matter linked to the interplay between artificial gauge fields and interactions. Strongly correlated helical states are known to appear for specific ratios of the particle and magnetic flux densities and they can often be interpreted as a one-dimensional limit of fractional quantum Hall states, thus being called pretopological. Their signatures, however, are typically hard to observe due to the small gaps characterizing these states. Here we investigate bo…
Periodically driven non-Hermitian systems could possess exotic nonequilibrium phases with unique topological, dynamical and transport properties. In this work, we introduce an experimentally realizable two-leg ladder model subjecting to both time-periodic quenches and non-Hermitian effects, which belongs to an extended CII symmetry class. Due to the interplay between drivings and nonreciprocity, rich non-Hermitian Floquet topological phases emerge in the system, with each of them been characterized by a pair of even-integer topological invariants $(w_{0},w_π)\in2\mathbb{Z}\times2\mathbb{Z}$. U…
There has been a growing interest in realizing quantum simulators for physical systems where perturbative methods are ineffective. The scalability and flexibility of circuit quantum electrodynamics (cQED) make it a promising platform to implement various types of simulators, including lattice models of strongly-coupled field theories. Here, we use a multimode superconducting parametric cavity as a hardware-efficient analog quantum simulator, realizing a lattice in synthetic dimensions with complex hopping interactions. The coupling graph, \textit{i.e.} the realized model, can be programmed \te…
We study the interplay between the Kitaev and Ising interactions on both ladder and two dimensional lattices. We show that the ground state of the Kitaev ladder is a symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phase, which is protected by a $\mathbb{Z}_2 \times \mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry. It is confirmed by the degeneracy of the entanglement spectrum and non-trivial phase factors (inequivalent projective representations of the symmetries), which are obtained within infinite matrix-product representation of numerical density matrix renormalization group. We derive the effective theory to describe the topo…
We theoretically address spin chain analogs of the Kitaev quantum spin model on the honeycomb lattice. The emergent quantum spin liquid phases or Anderson resonating valence bond (RVB) states can be understood, as an effective model, in terms of p-wave superconductivity and Majorana fermions. We derive a generalized phase diagram for the two-leg ladder system with tunable interaction strengths between chains allowing us to vary the shape of the lattice (from square to honeycomb ribbon or brickwall ladder). We evaluate the winding number associated with possible emergent (topological) gapless m…
Preparing strongly-coupled particle states on quantum computers requires large resources. In this work, we show how classical sampling coupled with projection operators can be used to compute Minkowski matrix elements without explicitly preparing these states on the quantum computer. We demonstrate this for the 2+1d $\mathbb{Z}_2$ lattice gauge theory on small lattices with a quantum simulator.
We show how to calculate the relative tensor product of bimodule categories (not necessarily invertible) using ladder string diagrams. As an illustrative example, we compute the Brauer-Picard ring for the fusion category $\operatorname{Vec}(\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z})$. Moreover, we provide a physical interpretation of all indecomposable bimodule categories in terms of domain walls in the associated topological phase. We show how this interpretation can be used to compute the Brauer-Picard ring from a physical perspective.

Lattice gauge theories (LGTs) are one of the most fundamental subjects in many-body physics, and has recently attracted considerable research interests in quantum simulations. Here we experimentally investigate the emergent $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge invariance in a 1D superconducting circuit with 10 transmon qubits. By precisely adjusting staggered longitudinal and transverse fields to each qubit, we construct an effective Hamiltonian containing an LGT and gauge-broken terms. The corresponding matter sector can exhibit a localization, and there also exists a 3-qubit operator, of which the expectati…
