We generalize dark matter production to a two-metric framework whereby the physical metric, which couples to the Standard Model (SM), is conformally and/or disformally related to the metric governing the gravitational dynamics. We show that this setup is naturally present in many Ultra Violet (UV) constructions, from Kähler moduli fields to tensor-portal models, and from emergent gravity to supergravity models. In this setting we study dark matter production in the early Universe resulting from both scatterings off the thermal bath and the radiative decay of the inflaton. We also take into account non-instantaneous reheating effects at the end of inflation. In this context, dark matter emerges from the production of the scalar field mediating the conformal/disformal interactions with the SM, i.e. realising a Feebly Interacting Matter Particle (FIMP) scenario where the suppression scale of the interaction between the scalar and the SM can be taken almost as high as the Planck scale in the deep UV.
Thermal freeze-out is a prominent example of dark matter (DM) production mechanism in the early Universe that can yield the correct relic density of stable weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs). At the other end of the mass scale, many popular extensions of the Standard Model predict the existence of ultra-light scalar fields. These can be coupled to matter, preferentially in a universal and shift-symmetry-preserving way. We study the impact of such conformal and disformal couplings on the relic density of WIMPs, without introducing modifications to the thermal history of the Universe. …

When augmenting our cosmological models or gravitational theories with an additional light scalar field, any coupling between matter and this scalar can affect the orbital motion of binary systems. Ordinarily, the new force mediated by the scalar can be naturally the same order of magnitude as the usual gravitational force and therefore is tightly constrained. We show that a disformal coupling between the scalar and matter can lead to a novel screening mechanism in which these fifth forces are suppressed by several orders of magnitude at sufficiently small separations and large relative veloci…
We show how a nearly massless scalar field conformally and disformally coupled to matter can affect the dynamics of two bodies in their inspiralling phase before merging. We discuss both the conservative dynamics, e.g. how the energy of the bound system is corrected by the conformal and disformal interactions, and the dissipative part where scalars and gravitons are emitted. The first disformal correction to the Einstein-Infeld-Hoffmann Lagrangian is obtained using both the Fokker method relying on the equations of motion and an Effective Field Theory approach using Feynman diagrams. This lead…

We launch a first investigation into how a light scalar field coupled both conformally and disformally to matter influences the evolution of spinning point-like bodies. Working directly at the level of the equations of motion, we derive novel spin-orbit and spin-spin effects accurate to leading order in a nonrelativistic and weak-field expansion. Crucially, unlike the spin-independent effects induced by the disformal coupling, which have been shown to vanish in circular binaries due to rotational symmetry, the spin-dependent effects we study here persist even in the limit of zero eccentricity,…
Pulsar Timing constraints on scalar-tensor theories with conformal and disformal couplings to matter are discussed. Reducing the dynamics to the motion in the centre of mass frame and using the mean anomaly parametrisation, we find the first post-Newtonian corrections induced by the conformal and disformal interactions in the form of a generalized quasi-Keplerian solution. We also derive the radiation reaction force due to scalar radiation and the corresponding Post-Keplerian Parameters (PKP). We use different pulsar time of arrival (TOA) data sets to probe the scalar corrections to the PKP. I…
We investigate scalar-tensor theories, motivated by dark energy models, in the strong gravity regime around the black hole at the centre of our galaxy. In such theories general relativity is modified since the scalar field couples to matter. We consider the most general conformal and disformal couplings of the scalar field to matter to study the orbital behavior of the nearby stars around the galactic star center $Sgr A^{*}$. Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) simulation yields a bound on the parameters of the couplings of the scalar field to matter. Using Bayesian Analysis yields the first const…
The electroweak axion is identified with the fuzzy dark matter of a mass $m\simeq 10^{-20}$--$10^{-19}\,{\rm eV}$. The model predicts two components of dark matter, one is ultralight and the other is WIMP-like. The Chern-Simons-type interaction between the fuzzy dark matter and photon and the $B+L$ breaking proton decays are predicted.
Evidence has continued to accumulate over the last few decades as to the existence and nature of dark matter. Depending on the particle candidate, the dark matter can exhibit one of several cosmologically defined models: hot dark matter, cold dark matter, warm dark matter, self-interacting dark matter, and fuzzy dark matter. In this paper I review the relevance and status of these models, whether it is possible for more than one of these models to each constitute some fraction of the dark matter, and discuss the prospects for determining if any of these models can successfully describe the pro…
We present the cosmological constraints on the cross section of baryon-dark matter interactions for the dark matter mass below the MeV scale from the Planck CMB (cosmic microwave background) and SDSS (Sloan Digital Sky Survey) Lyman-$α$ forest data. To explore the dark matter mass $m_χ\lesssim 1$ MeV for which the dark matter's free-streaming effect can suppress the observable small scale density fluctuations, in addition to the acoustic oscillation damping in existence of the baryon-dark matter coupling, we apply the approximated treatment of dark matter free-streaming analogous to that of th…
The paper brings a novel approach to unification of dark matter and dark energy in terms of a cosmic fluid. A model is introduced in which the cosmic fluid speed of sound squared is defined as a function of its equation of state (EoS) parameter. It is shown how logarithmic part of this function results in dynamical regimes previously not observed in cosmic fluid models. It is shown that in a particular dynamical regime the model behaves as a unification of dark matter and phantom dark energy. Further, it is shown that the model may describe dark matter - dark energy unification in which dark e…
We study the effects of dark matter self-interactions on the local dark matter distribution in selected Milky Way-like galaxies in the EAGLE hydrodynamical simulations. The simulations were run with two different self-interacting dark matter models, a constant and velocity-dependent self-interaction cross-section. We find that the local dark matter velocity distribution of the Milky Way-like halos in the simulations with dark matter self-interactions and baryons are generally similar to those extracted from cold collisionless dark matter simulations with baryons. In both cases, the local dark …
Since neither supersymmetry nor dark matter WIMPs have yet been observed, pessimism about their reality has been growing. Here we discuss a new supersymmetric theory and a new dark matter candidate which are naturally consistent with current experimental results, but which imply a plethora of new phenomena awaiting discovery within the foreseeable future.
We introduce an $SU(2)_X^{}$ dark sector without any fermions and then realize a non-abelian kinetic mixing between the dark $SU(2)_X^{}$ gauge fields and the standard model $SU(2)_L^{}\times U(1)_Y^{}$ gauge fields. While one of the dark gauge bosons becomes a dark photon, the others can keep stable to form a dark matter particle. The nearly degenerate masses of dark photon and dark matter could be tested if the dark photon and the dark matter are both observed in the future.
