Pressure dependence of structural, elastic, electronic, thermodynamic, and optical properties of van der Waals-type NaSn2P2 pnictide superconductor: insights from DFT study
NaSn2P2 is a recently discovered superconducting system belonging to a particular class of materials with van der Waals structure. There is enormous interest in such compounds because of their intriguing electrical, optical, chemical, thermal, and superconducting state properties. We have studied the pressure dependent structural, thermo-physical, electronic band structure, and superconducting state properties of this quasi-two dimensional system in details for the first time via ab initio technique. The optical The optical properties are also investigated for different electric field polarizations for the first time. The elastic anisotropy indices point towards high level of mechanical and bonding anisotropy in NaSn2P2 consistent with its highly layered structure. The pressure dependent superconducting transition temperature, Tc, of NaSn2P2 is predicted to vary strongly with the pressure dependent variation of Debye temperature. The electronic energy dispersion curves reveal high level of direction dependence; the effective mass of charge carries are particularly high for the out-of-plane charge transport. The optical parameters compliment the underlying electronic energy density of states features and are weakly dependent on the polarization of the incident electric field. The reflectivity of NaSn2P2 is very high in the visible region and remains quite high and non-selective over an extended energy range in the ultraviolet region. The absorption coefficient is also high in the mid-ultraviolet band. All these optical features render NaSn2P2 suitable for optoelectronic device applications.
A simple scheme for avoiding non-spherical double counting in the combination of density func- tional theory with dynamical mean-field theory (DFT+DMFT)is developed. It is applied to total- energy calculations and structural optimization of the pnictide superconductor LaFeAsO. The results are compared to a recently proposed "exact" double-counting formulation. Both schemes bring the optimized Fe-As interatomic distance close to the experimental value. This resolves the long stand- ing controversy between DFT+DMFT and experiment for the structural optimization of LaFeAsO.
Ubiquitous Van der Waals interactions between atoms and molecules are important for many molecular and solid structures. These systems are often studied from first principles using the Density Functional Theory (DFT). However, the commonly used DFT functionals fail to capture the essence of Van der Waals effects. Many attempts to correct for this problem have been proposed, which are not completely satisfactory because they are either very complex and computationally expensive or have a basic semiempirical character. We here describe a novel approach, based on the use of the Maximally-Localize…
The aim of this study is to clarify the physics which governs the transition from epsilon phase to zeta phase of solid oxygen observed experimentally at 96 GPa using density functional theory (DFT). The transition was predicted at 40 GPa with PBE functional. Then the Hubbard correction was added to enhance the localization of p-orbital of oxygen. The epsilon-zeta transition pressure was significantly improved to 70 GPa. Finally, we included the non-local van der Waals correction. The transition pressure slightly increases to 80 GPa. These results demonstrate that the contribution from Hubbard …
We establish a general equivalence between van der Waals interaction energies within the formalism of the non-local van der Waals functional of the density functional theory and within the formalism of the field approach based on the secular determinants of the electromagnetic field modes. We then compare the two methods explicitly in the case of a planparallel geometry with a continuously varying dielectric response function and show that their respective numerical implementations are not equivalent. This allows us to discuss the merits of the two approaches and possible advantages of either …
A new implementation is proposed for including van der Waals interactions in Density Functional Theory using the Maximally-Localized Wannier functions. With respect to the previous DFT/vdW-WF method, the present DFT/vdW-WF2 approach, which is based on the simpler London expression and takes into account the intrafragment overlap of the localized Wannier functions, leads to a considerable improvement in the evaluation of the $C_6$ van der Waals coefficients, as shown by the application to a set of selected dimers. Preliminary results on Ar on graphite and Ne on the Cu(111) metal surface suggest…
The DFT/vdW-QHO-WF method, recently developed to include the van der Waals (vdW) interactions in approximated Density Functional Theory (DFT) by combining the Quantum Harmonic Oscillator model with the Maximally Localized Wannier Function technique, is applied to the cases of atoms and small molecules (X=Ar, CO, H$_2$, H$_2$O) weakly interacting with benzene and with the ideal planar graphene surface. Comparison is also presented with the results obtained by other DFT vdW-corrected schemes, including PBE+D, vdW-DF, vdW-DF2, rVV10, and by the simpler Local Density Approximation (LDA) and semilo…
We compare the density functional theory (DFT) results on the adsorption of small aromatic molecules (benzene, pyridine and thiophene) on gold surfaces obtained by using three types of van der Waals exchange-correlation functionals and localized basis set calculations. We show that the value of the molecule surface binding energy depends on the interplay between the BSSE effect and the tendency of the exchange-correlation functionals to overestimate both the molecule-surface as well as the gold-gold distances within the relaxed systems. Consequently, we find that by using different types of LC…
There is enormous recent interest in weak, van der Waals-type (vdW) interactions due to their fundamental relevance for two-dimensional materials and the so-called vdW heterostructures. Tackling this problem using computer simulation is very challenging due to the non-trivial, non-local nature of these interactions. We benchmark different treatments of London dispersion forces within the density functional theory (DFT) framework on hexagonal boron nitride or graphene monolayers on Ir(111) by comparing the calculated geometries to a comprehensive set of experimental data. The geometry of these …
Detailed physisorption data from experiment for the H_2 molecule on low-index Cu surfaces challenge theory. Recently, density-functional theory (DFT) has been developed to account for nonlocal correlation effects, including van der Waals (dispersion) forces. We show that the functional vdW-DF2 gives a potential-energy curve, potential-well energy levels, and difference in lateral corrugation promisingly close to the results obtained by resonant elastic backscattering-diffraction experiments. The backscattering barrier is found selective for choice of exchange-functional approximation. Further,…
The effects of electron-electron correlations on the low-energy electronic structure and their relationship with unconventional superconductivity are central aspects in the research on the iron-based pnictide superconductors. Here we use soft X-ray angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (SX-ARPES) to study how electronic correlations evolve in different chemically substituted iron pnictides. We find that correlations are intrinsically related to the effective filling of the correlated orbitals, rather than to the filling obtained by valence counting. Combined density functional theory (DFT)…
BaPd2As2 belongs to 122 pnictide group, famous for exhibiting superconductivity at high temperatures and other electronic correlations. Unlike the 122 iron arsenides, BaPd2As2 exhibits superconductivity at low temperature when realized in theThCr2Si2 type structure (I4/mmm). We have performed density functional theory (DFT) based calculations to investigate the structural, elastic, electronic, thermodynamic, and optical properties of BaPd2As2 in this study. The structural, elastic, and the band structure features are compared with the available experimental and theoretical results. Pressure an…
We present a new scheme to include the van der Waals (vdW) interactions in approximated Density Functional Theory (DFT) by combining the Quantum Harmonic Oscillator model with the Maximally Localized Wannier Function technique. With respect to the recently developed DFT/vdW-WF2 method, also based on Wannier Functions, the new approach is more general, being no longer restricted to the case of well separated interacting fragments. Moreover, it includes higher than pairwise energy contributions, coming from the dipole--dipole coupling among quantum oscillators. The method is successfully applied…
Using density functional theory (DFT) methods, we have calculated X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and X-ray circular dichroism (XMCD) spectra in bulk and thin films of Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$, CrI$_3$, and CrGeTe$_3$. DFT+$U$ methods are employed for better handling of correlation effects of 3$d$ electrons of transition metals. We discuss relations between the density of states, radial matrix elements, and the corresponding spectra. By comparing the calculated spectra with previously measured spectra, we discuss the reliability of DFT+$U$ methods to describe the electronic structures of these mater…
Using first-principles calculations based on density-functional theory (DFT) we investigated the effects of the van der Waals (vdW) interactions on the structural and electronic properties of anthracene and pentacene adsorbed on the Ag(111) surface. We found that the inclusion of vdW corrections strongly affects the binding of both anthracene/Ag(111) and pentacene/Ag(111), yielding adsorption heights and energies more consistent with the experimental results than standard DFT calculations with generalized gradient approximation (GGA). For anthracene/Ag(111) the effect of the vdW interactions i…
For sparse materials like graphitic systems and carbon nanotubes the standard density functional theory (DFT) faces significant problems because it cannot accurately describe the van der Waals interactions that are essential to the carbon-nanostructure materials behavior. While standard implementations of DFT can describe the strong chemical binding within an isolated, single-walled carbon nanotube, a new and extended DFT implementation is needed to describe the binding between nanotubes. We here provide the first steps to such an extension for parallel and concentric nanotubes through an elec…
We present GW many-body results for ground-state properties of two simple but very distinct families of inhomogenous systems in which traditional implementations of density-functional theory (DFT) fail drastically. The GW approach gives notably better results than the well-known random-phase approximation, at a similar computational cost. These results establish GW as a superior alternative to standard DFT schemes without the expensive numerical effort required by quantum Monte Carlo simulations.
Electron dispersion forces play a crucial role in determining the structure and properties of biomolecules, molecular crystals and many other systems. However, an accurate description of dispersion is highly challenging, with the most widely used electronic structure technique, density functional theory (DFT), failing to describe them with standard approximations. Therefore, applications of DFT to systems where dispersion is important have traditionally been of questionable accuracy. However, the last decade has seen a surge of enthusiasm in the DFT community to tackle this problem and in so-d…
Numerous contemporary investigations in condensed matter physics are devoted to high temperature (high-$T_c$ ) cuprate superconductors. Despite its unique effulgence among research subjects, the enigma of the high-$T_c$ mechanism still persists. One way to advance its understanding is to discover and study new analogous systems. Here we begin a novel exploration of the natural mineral murunskite, K$_2$FeCu$_3$S$_4$, as an interpolation compound between cuprates and ferropnictides, the only known high-$T_c$ superconductors at ambient pressure. Because in-depth studies can be carried out only on…
We study the mutual interactions of simple, parallel polymers and nanotubes, and develop a scheme to include the van der Waals interactions in the framework of density functional theory (DFT) for these molecules at intermediate to long-range separations. We primarily focus on the polymers polyethylene, isotactic polypropylene, and isotactic polyvinylchloride, but our approach applies more generally to all simple polymers and nanotubes. From first-principle DFT calculations we extract the electron density of the polymers and their static electric response. We derive explicit expressions for the…
Thermal equations of state (EoS) are essential in several scientific domains. However, experimental determination of EoS parameters may be limited at extreme conditions, therefore, {\it ab~initio} calculations have become an important method to obtain them. Density Functional Theory (DFT) and its extensions with various degrees of approximations for the exchange and correlation (XC) energy is the method of choice, but large errors in the EoS parameters are still common. The alkali halides have been problematic from the onset of this field and the quest for appropriate DFT functionals for such …
The first principles approaches, density functional theory (DFT) and quantum Monte Carlo, have been used to examine the balance between van der Waals (vdW) forces and hydrogen (H) bonding in ambient and high pressure phases of ice. At higher pressure, the contribution to the lattice energy from vdW increases and that from H bonding decreases, leading vdW to have a substantial effect on the transition pressures between the crystalline ice phases. An important consequence, likely to be of relevance to molecular crystals in general, is that transition pressures obtained from DFT functionals which…
The corrosion of materials is an undesirable and costly process affecting many areas of technology and everyday life. As such, considerable effort has gone into understanding and preventing it. Organic molecule based coatings can in certain circumstances act as effective corrosion inhibitors. Although they have been used to great effect for more than sixty years, how they function at the atomic-level is still a matter of debate. In this work, computer simulation approaches based on density functional theory are used to investigate benzotriazole (BTAH), one of the most widely used and studied c…
In two-dimensional (2D) magnetic systems, large magnetic anisotropy is needed to stabilize the magnetic order according to Mermin-Wagner theorem. Based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we propose that the magnetic anisotropic energy (MAE) of 2D ferromagnetic (FM) semiconductors can be strongly enhanced in van der Waals heterostructures by attaching a nonmagnetic semiconductor monolayer with large spin-orbit coupling. We studied Cr2Ge2Te6/PtSe2 bilayer heterostructures, where each layer has been realized in recent experiments. The DFT calculations show that the MAE of Cr2Ge2Te6/…
To obtain accurate independent-particle descriptions for ferromagnetic two-dimensional van der Waals materials, we apply the quasiparticle self-consistent $GW$ (QSGW) method to VI$_3$, CrI$_3$, CrGeTe$_3$, and Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$. QSGW provides a description of the nonlocal exchange-correlation term in the one-particle Hamiltonian. The nonlocal term is important not only as the $U$ of density functional theory (DFT)+$U$ but also for differentiating occupied and unoccupied states in semiconductors. We show the limitations of DFT+$U$ in mimicking QSGW.
The few reported members of the antiperovskite structure class $Ae_3Pn_APn_B$ of alkaline earth ($Ae$ = Ca,Sr,Ba) pnictides ($Pn$ = N,P,As,Sb,Bi) compounds are all based on the B-site anion $Pn_B$=N. All fit can be categorized as narrow gap semiconductors, making them of interest for several reasons. Because chemical reasoning suggests that more members of this class may be stable, we provide here a density functional theory (DFT) based survey of this entire class of $3\times5\times5$ compounds. We determine first the relative energetic stability of the distribution of pairs of $Pn$ ions in th…
Silver fulminate (AgCNO) is a primary explosive, which exists in two polymorphic phases namely orthorhombic (\emph{Cmcm}) and trigonal (\emph{R$\bar{3}$}) forms at ambient conditions. In the present study, we have investigated the effect of pressure and temperature on relative phase stability of the polymorphs using planewave pseudopotential approaches based on Density Functional Theory (DFT). van der Waals interactions play a significant role in predicting the phase stability and they can be effectively captured by semiempirical dispersion correction methods incontrast to standard DFT functio…
The formation energies and transition energy levels of native defects in hexagonal BN have been studied by first-principles calculations based on hybrid density functional theory (DFT) together with an empirical dispersion correction of Grimme's DFT-D2 method. Our calculated results predict that the interstitial B is the most stable defect under N-rich and p-type conditions. While the B vacancy and interstitial N become the dominate defects when the electron chemical potential is near the conduction band maximum of host. Nevertheless, these compensating defects would be inactive due to their u…
The DFT/vdW-WF2s1 method based on the generation of localized Wannier functions, recently developed to include the van der Waals interactions in the Density Functional Theory and describe adsorption processes on metal surfaces by taking metal-screening effects into account, is applied to the case of the interaction of Xe with noble-metal surfaces, namely Ag(111), Au(111), and Cu(111). The study is also repeated by adopting the DFT/vdW-QHO-WF variant relying on the Quantum Harmonic Oscillator model which describes well many-body effects. Comparison of the computed equilibrium binding energies a…
Second order Moeller-Plesset perturbation theory (MP2) at the complete basis set (CBS) limit and diffusion quantum Monte Carlo (DMC) are used to examine several low energy isomers of the water hexamer. Both approaches predict the so-called "prism" to be the lowest energy isomer, followed by "cage", "book", and "cyclic" isomers. The energies of the four isomers are very similar, all being within 10-15 meV/H2O. This reference data is then used to evaluate the performance of several density-functional theory (DFT) exchange-correlation (xc) functionals. A subset of the xc functionals tested for sm…
Interfacial adhesion between graphene and a SiO2 substrate is studied by density functional theory (DFT) with dispersion corrections. The results demonstrate the van der Waals (vdW) interaction as the predominate mechanism for the graphene/SiO2 interface. It is found that the interaction strength is strongly influenced by changes of the SiO2 surface structures due to surface reactions with water. The adhesion energy is reduced when the reconstructed SiO2 surface is hydroxylated, and further reduced when covered by a monolayer of adsorbed water molecules. Thus, the effect of humidity may help e…
In order to investigate the electronic properties of the semiconducting van der Waals ferromagnet Cr$_2$Ge$_2$Te$_6$ (CGT), where ferromagnetic layers are bonded through van der Waals forces, we have performed angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements and density-functional-theory (DFT+U) calculations. The valence-band maximum at the Γ point is located $\sim$ 0.2 eV below the Fermi level, consistent with the semiconducting property of CGT. Comparison of the experimental density of states with the DFT calculation has suggested that Coulomb interaction between the Cr 3d elec…
The adsorption of 1,4-benzenediamine (BDA) on the Au(111) surface and azobenzene on the Ag(111) surface is investigated using density functional theory (DFT) with a non-local density functional (vdW-DF) and a semi-local Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (PBE) functional. For BDA on Au(111), the inclusion of London dispersion interactions not only dramatically enhances the molecule-substrate binding, resulting in adsorption energies consistent with experimental results, but also significantly alters the BDA binding geometry. For azobenzene on Ag(111), the vdW-DF produces superior adsorption energies compa…
Upon chemical substitution of oxygen with fluor, LaMnAsO has been electron-doped in experiments, resulting in samples with remarkably high Seebeck coefficients of around -300$μVK^{-1}$ at room temperature and 3% doping. Within the framework of density functional theory plus dynamical mean-field theory we are not only able to reproduce these experimental observations, but can also provide a thorough investigation of the underlying mechanisms. By considering electronic correlations in the half-filled Mn-3d shells, we trace the high Seebeck coefficient back to an asymmetry in the spectral functio…
To understand sparse systems we must account for both strong local atom bonds and weak nonlocal van der Waals forces between atoms separated by empty space. A fully nonlocal functional form [H. Rydberg, B.I. Lundqvist, D.C. Langreth, and M. Dion, Phys. Rev. B 62, 6997 (2000)] of density-functional theory (DFT) is applied here to the layered systems graphite, boron nitride, and molybdenum sulfide to compute bond lengths, binding energies, and compressibilities. These key examples show that the DFT with the generalized-gradient approximation does not apply for calculating properties of sparse ma…
We derive and validate a quantitative analytical model of the near-field electrostatic effects in the vicinity (>=3Å) of two-dimensional (2D) materials. In solving the Poisson equation of a near-planar point charge ansatz for the electronic density of a 2D material, our formula quantitatively captures the out-of-plane decay and the in-plane modulation of density functional theory (DFT)-calculated potentials. We provide a method for quickly constructing the electronic density ansatz, and apply it to the case of hexagonal monolayers (BN, AlN, GaN) and monochalcogenides (GeS, GeSe, GeTe, SnS, SnS…
The electronic structure of high-quality van der Waals NiPS$_3$ crystals was studied using near-edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy (NEXAFS) and resonant photoelectron spectroscopy (ResPES) in combination with density functional theory (DFT) approach. The experimental spectroscopic methods, being element specific, allow to discriminate between atomic contributions in the valence and conduction band density of states and give direct comparison with the results of DFT calculations. Analysis of the NEXAFS and ResPES data allows to identify the NiPS$_3$ material as a charge-transfer insulator. Obta…
In this work, the solvation and electronic structure of the aqueous chloride ion solution was investigated using Density Functional Theory (DFT) based \textit{ab initio} molecular dynamics (AIMD). From an analysis of radial distribution functions, coordination numbers, and solvation structures, we found that exact exchange ($E_{\rm xx}$) and non-local van der Waals (vdW) interactions effectively \textit{weaken} the interactions between the Cl$^-$ ion and the first solvation shell. With a Cl-O coordination number in excellent agreement with experiment, we found that most configurations generate…
Conventional magnetism occurs in systems which contain transition metals or rare earth ions with partially filled $d$ or $f$ shells. It is theoretically predicted that compounds of groups IA and IIA with IV and V, in some structural phases, are ferromagnetic half-metals which made them new candidates for spintronics applications. Employing density functional theory (DFT) we investigate magnetism in binary compounds CaN and CaAs. Regarding the structure of analogous magnetic materials and experimental results of CaAs synthesis, we have considered two cubic structures: rocksalt (RS) and zincblen…
The past few years has brought renewed focus on the physics behind the class of materials characterized by long-range interactions and wide regions of low electron density, sparse matter. There is now much work on developing the appropriate algorithms and codes able to correctly describe this class of materials within a parameter-free quantum physical description. In particular, van der Waals (vdW) forces play a major role in building up material cohesion in sparse matter. This work presents an application to the vanadium pentoxide (V2O5) bulk structure of two versions of the vdW-DF method, a …
A density functional theory (DFT) that accounts for van der Waals (vdW) interactions in condensed matter, materials physics, chemistry, and biology is reviewed. The insights that led to the construction of the Rutgers-Chalmers van der Waals Density Functional (vdW-DF) are presented with the aim of giving a historical perspective, while also emphasising more recent efforts which have sought to improve its accuracy. In addition to technical details, we discuss a range of recent applications that illustrate the necessity of including dispersion interactions in DFT. This review highlights the valu…
The DFT/vdW-WF method, recently developed to include the Van der Waals interactions in Density Functional Theory (DFT) using the Maximally Localized Wannier functions, is applied to the study of the adsorption of rare-gas atoms (Ne, Ar, Kr, and Xe) on the Cu(111) and Pb(111) surfaces, at three high-symmetry sites. We evaluate the equilibrium binding energies and distances, and the induced work-function changes and dipole moments. We find that, for Ne, Ar, and Kr on the Cu(111) surface the different adsorption configurations are characterized by very similar binding energies, while the favored …
Combining single-layer two-dimensional semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) with graphene layer in van der Waals heterostructures offers an intriguing means of controlling the electronic properties through these heterostructures. Here, we report the electronic and structural properties of transferred single layer WS2 on epitaxial graphene using micro-Raman spectroscopy, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements (ARPES) and Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations. The results show good electronic properties as well as well-defined band arising from the strong…
Potassium intercalation in graphite is investigated by first-principles theory. The bonding in the potassium-graphite compound is reasonably well accounted for by traditional semilocal density functional theory (DFT) calculations. However, to investigate the intercalate formation energy from pure potassium atoms and graphite requires use of a description of the graphite interlayer binding and thus a consistent account of the nonlocal dispersive interactions. This is included seamlessly with ordinary DFT by a van der Waals density functional (vdW-DF) approach [Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 246401 (2004)…
The structural parameters and electronic structure of rare-earth pnictides are calculated using density functional theory (DFT) with the Heyd, Scuseria, and Ernzerhof (HSE06) screened hybrid functional. We focus on RE-V compounds, with RE=La, Gd, Er, and Lu, and V=As, Sb, and Bi, and analyze the effects of spin-orbit coupling and treating the RE 4$f$ electrons as valence electrons in the projector augmented wave approach. The results of HSE06 calculations are compared with DFT within the generalized gradient approximation (DFT-GGA) and other previous calculations. We find that all these RE-V c…
Understanding the interaction of organic molecules with TiO2 surfaces is important for a wide range of technological applications. While density functional theory (DFT) calculations can provide valuable insight about these interactions, traditional DFT approaches with local exchange-correlation functionals suffer from a poor description of non-bonding van der Waals (vdW) interactions. We examine here the contribution of vdW forces to the interaction of small organic molecules (methane, methanol, formic acid and glycine) with the TiO2 (110) surface, based on DFT calculations with the optB88-vdW…
Using a combination of density functional theory (DFT) and spin-wave theory methods, we investigate the magnetic interactions and spin excitations in semiconducting VI$_3$. Exchange parameters of monolayer, bilayer, and bulk forms are evaluated by mapping the magnetic energies of various spin configurations, calculated using DFT+$U$, onto the Heisenberg model. The intralayer couplings remain largely unchanged in three forms of VI$_3$, while the interlayer couplings show stronger dependence on the dimensionality of the materials. We calculate the spin-wave spectra within a linear spin-wave theo…
We present a formally exact van der Waals inclusive electronic structure theory, called FDE-vdW, based on the Frozen Density Embedding formulation of subsystem Density-Functional Theory. In subsystem DFT, the energy functional is composed of subsystem additive and non-additive terms. We show that an appropriate definition of the long-range correlation energy is given by the value of the non-additive correlation functional. This functional is evaluated using the Fluctuation-Dissipation Theorem aided by a formally exact decomposition of the response functions into subsystem contributions. FDE-vd…
We investigate the equation of states of the $β$-polymorph of cyclotetramethylene tetranitramine (HMX) energetic molecular crystal using DFT-D2, a first-principles calculation based on density functional theory (DFT) with van der Waals (vdW) corrections. The atomic structures and equation of states under hydrostatic compressions are studied for pressures up to 100 GPa. We found that the N-N bonds along the minor axis of the ring are more sensitive to the variation of pressure, which indicates that they are potential "weak spots" in atomic level within a single molecule of $β$-HMX. Our study su…
Materials with van der Waals-bonding are known to exhibit quantum confinement effect, in which the electronic bandgap of the three-dimensional (3D) realization of a material is lower than that of its two-dimensional (2D) counterpart. However, the possibility of an anomalous quantum confinement effect (AQCE) exists, where the bandgap trend is reversed. In this work, we computationally identify materials for which such AQCE occurs. Using density functional theory (DFT), we compute ~1000 OptB88vdW (semi-local functional), ~50 HSE06 and ~50 PBE0 (hybrid functional) bandgaps for bulk and their corr…
Sparse matter is characterized by regions with low electron density and its understanding calls for methods to accurately calculate both the van der Waals (vdW) interactions and other bonding. Here we present a first-principles density functional theory (DFT) study of a layered oxide (V2O5) bulk structure which shows charge voids in between the layers and we highlight the role of the vdW forces in building up material cohesion. The result of previous first-principles studies involving semilocal approximations to the exchange-correlation functional in DFT gave results in good agreement with exp…
It is known that ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations of liquid water, based on the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) to density functional theory (DFT), yield structural and diffusive properties in reasonable agreement with experiment only if artificially high temperatures are used in the simulations. The equilibrium density, at normal conditions, of DFT water has been recently shown by Schmidt et al. [J. Phys. chem. B, 113, 11959 (2009)] to be underestimated by different GGA functionals for exchange and correlation, and corrected by the addition of interatomic pair potentia…

Recently discovered ferromagnetism of the layered van der Waals material VI$_3$ attracts much research attention. Despite substantial progress,in the following important aspects no consensus has been reached: (i) a possible deviation of the easy axis from the normal to the VI$_3$ layers, (ii) a possible inequivalence of the V atoms, (iii) the value of the V magnetic moments. The theoretical works differ in the conclusions on the conduction nature of the system, the value and the role of the V orbital moments. To the best of our knowledge there is no theoretical works addressing issues (i) and (…
