We consider the problem of the minimizer constancy in the fractional embedding theorem $\mathcal{H}^s(Ω) \hookrightarrow L_q(Ω)$ for a bounded Lipschitz domain $Ω,$ depending on the domain size. For the family of domains $\varepsilon Ω,$ we prove that for small dilation coefficients $\varepsilon$ a unique minimizer is constant, whereas for large $\varepsilon$ a constant function is not even a local minimizer. We also discuss whether a constant function is a global minimizer if it is a local one.
We prove the existence of extremals for fractional Moser-Trudinger inequalities in an interval and on the whole real line. In both cases we use blow-up analysis for the corresponding Euler-Lagrange equation, which requires new sharp estimates obtained via commutator techniques.
We study a pseudo-differential equation driven by the degenerate fractional p-Laplacian, under Dirichlet type conditions in a smooth domain. First we show that the solution set within the order interval given by a sub-supersolution pair is nonempty, directed, and compact, hence endowed with extremal elements. Then, we prove existence of a smallest positive, a biggest negative and a nodal solution, combining variational methods with truncation techniques.
In this article we obtain improved versions of Stein-Weiss and Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg inequalities, involving Besov norms of negative smoothness. As an application of the former, we derive the existence of extremals of the Stein-Weiss inequality in certain cases, some of which are not contained in the celebrated theorem of E. Lieb.
In this paper we extend, for the first time, part of the Weierstrass extremal field theory in the Calculus of Variations to a nonlocal framework. Our model case is the energy functional for the fractional Laplacian (the Gagliardo-Sobolev seminorm), for which such a theory was still unknown. We build a null-Lagrangian and a calibration for nonlinear equations involving the fractional Laplacian in the presence of a field of extremals. Thus, our construction assumes the existence of a family of solutions to the Euler-Lagrange equation whose graphs produce a foliation. Then, the minimality of each…
We study the extremal solution for the problem $(-Δ)^s u=λf(u)$ in $Ω$, $u\equiv0$ in $\R^n\setminusΩ$, where $λ>0$ is a parameter and $s\in(0,1)$. We extend some well known results for the extremal solution when the operator is the Laplacian to this nonlocal case. For general convex nonlinearities we prove that the extremal solution is bounded in dimensions $n<4s$. We also show that, for exponential and power-like nonlinearities, the extremal solution is bounded whenever $n<10s$. In the limit $s\uparrow1$, $n<10$ is optimal. In addition, we show that the extremal solution is $H^s(\R^n)$ in an…
In this article, we derive the existence of positive solutions of a semi-linear, non-local elliptic PDE, involving a singular perturbation of the fractional laplacian, coming from the fractional Hardy-Sobolev-Maz'ya inequality, derived in this paper. We also derive symmetry properties and a precise asymptotic behaviour of solutions.
We study the validity of the comparison and maximum principles, and their relation with principal eigenvalues, for a class of degenerate nonlinear operators that are extremal among operators with one dimensional fractional diffusion.
Let $Ω$ be a smooth, bounded domain of $\mathbb{R}^{N}$, $ω$ be a positive, $L^{1}$-normalized function, and $0<s<1<p.$ We study the asymptotic behavior, as $p\rightarrow\infty,$ of the pair $\left( \sqrt[p]{Λ_{p}% },u_{p}\right) ,$ where $Λ_{p}$ is the best constant $C$ in the Sobolev type inequality \[ C\exp\left( \int_Ω(\log\left\vert u\right\vert ^{p})ω\mathrm{d}x\right) \leq\left[ u\right] _{s,p}^{p}\quad\forall\,u\in W_{0}^{s,p}(Ω) \] and $u_{p}$ is the positive, suitably normalized extremal function corresponding to $Λ_{p}$. We show that the limit pairs are closely related to the proble…
We investigate the existence of extremals for Hardy-Sobolev inequalities involving the Dirichlet fractional Laplacian of order s, 0<s<1, on half-spaces.
We make a study of Weinstein functionals, first defined in ~\cite{W}, on the hyperbolic space $\mathbb{H}^n$. We are primarily interested in the existence of Weinstein functional maximisers, or, in other words, existence of extremal functions for the best constant of the Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequality. The main result is that the maximum value of the Weinstein functional on $\mathbb{H}^n$ is the same as that on $\mathbb{R}^n$ and the related fact that the maximum value of the Weinstein functional is not attained on $\mathbb{H}^n$, when maximisation is done in the Sobolev space $H^1(\mathbb{H}^…
We study the problem $(-Δ)^su=λe^u$ in a bounded domain $Ω\subset\mathbb R^n$, where $λ$ is a positive parameter. More precisely, we study the regularity of the extremal solution to this problem. Our main result yields the boundedness of the extremal solution in dimensions $n\leq7$ for all $s\in(0,1)$ whenever $Ω$ is, for every $i=1,...,n$, convex in the $x_i$-direction and symmetric with respect to $\{x_i=0\}$. The same holds if $n=8$ and $s\gtrsim0'28206...$, or if $n=9$ and $s\gtrsim0'63237...$. These results are new even in the unit ball $Ω=B_1$.
We prove the nondegeneracy of the extremals of the fractional Sobolev inequality as solutions of a critical semilinear nonlocal equation involving the fractional Laplacian.
We investigate stable solutions of elliptic equations of the type \begin{equation*} \left \{ \begin{aligned} (-Δ)^s u&=λf(u) \qquad {\mbox{ in $B_1 \subset \R^{n}$}} \\ u&= 0 \qquad{\mbox{ on $\partial B_1$,}}\end{aligned}\right . \end{equation*} where $n\ge2$, $s \in (0,1)$, $λ\geq 0$ and $f$ is any smooth positive superlinear function. The operator $(-Δ)^s$ stands for the fractional Laplacian, a pseudo-differential operator of order $2s$. According to the value of $λ$, we study the existence and regularity of weak solutions $u$.
In this paper, we study existence results for initial value problems for hybrid fractional integro-differential equations. Our investigation is based on the Dhage hybrid fixed point theorem. Some fundamental fractional differential inequalities are also established which are utilized to prove the existence of extremal solutions. Necessary tools are considered and the comparison principle is proved which will be useful for further study of qualitative behavior of solutions.
In this paper we deduce a formula for the fractional Laplace operator $(-Δ)^{s}$ on radially symmetric functions useful for some applications. We give a criterion of subharmonicity associated with $(-Δ)^{s}$, and apply it to a problem related to the Hessian inequality of Sobolev type: $$\int_{\mathbb{R}^n}|(-Δ)^{\frac{k}{k+1}} u|^{k+1} dx \le C \int_{\mathbb{R}^n} - u \, F_k[u] \, dx, $$ where $F_k$ is the $k$-Hessian operator on $\mathbb{R}^n$, $1\le k < \frac{n}{2}$, under some restrictions on a $k$-convex function $u$. In particular, we show that the class of $u$ for which the above inequal…
In this work, we study the existence of weak solution to the following quasi linear elliptic problem involving the fractional $p$-Laplacian operator, a Hardy potential and multiple critical Sobolev nonlinearities with singularities, \begin{align*} (-Δ_p)^su - μ\dfrac{\vert u \vert^{p-2} u}{\vert x \vert^{ps}} = \dfrac{\vert u\vert^{p^*_s(β)-2}u}{\vert x \vert^β} + \dfrac{\vert u\vert^{p^*_s(α)-2} u}{\vert x \vert^α}, \end{align*} where $ x \in \mathbb{R}^N$, $u\in D^{s,p}(\mathbb{R}^N)$, $0<s<1$, $1<p<+\infty$, $N>sp$, $0<α<sp$, $0<β<sp$, $β\neqα$, $μ< μ_H := \inf_{u \in D^{s,p}(\mathbb{R}^N) …
We study the regularity of stable solutions to the problem $$ \left\{ \begin{array}{rcll} (-Δ)^s u &=& f(u) & \text{in} \quad B_1\,, u &\equiv&0 & \text{in} \quad \mathbb R^n\setminus B_1\,, \end{array} \right. $$ where $s\in(0,1)$. Our main result establishes an $L^\infty$ bound for stable and radially decreasing $H^s$ solutions to this problem in dimensions $2 \leq n < 2(s+2+\sqrt{2(s+1)})$. In particular, this estimate holds for all $s\in(0,1)$ in dimensions $2 \leq n\leq 6$. It applies to all nonlinearities $f\in C^2$. For such parameters $s$ and $n$, our result leads to the regularity of …
