The development of non-Hermitian topological band theory has led to observations of novel topological phenomena in effectively classical, driven and dissipative systems. However, for open quantum many-body systems, the absence of a ground state presents a challenge to define robust signatures of non-Hermitian topology. We show that such a signature is provided by crossings in the time evolution of the entanglement spectrum. These crossings occur in quenches from the trivial to the topological phase of a driven-dissipative Kitaev chain that is described by a Markovian quantum master equation in Lindblad form. At the topological transition, which can be crossed either by changing parameters of the Hamiltonian of the system or by increasing the strength of dissipation, the time scale at which the first entanglement spectrum crossing occurs diverges with a dynamical critical exponent of $ε= 1/2$. We corroborate these numerical findings with an exact analytical solution of the quench dynamics for a spectrally flat postquench Liouvillian. This exact solution suggests an interpretation of the topological quench dynamics as a fermion parity pump. Our work thus reveals signatures of non-Hermitian topology which are unique to quantum many-body systems and cannot be emulated in classical simulators of non-Hermitian wave physics.
Topology plays a central role in nearly all disciplines of physics, yet its applications have so far been restricted to closed, lossless systems in thermodynamic equilibrium. Given that many physical systems are open and may include gain and loss mechanisms, there is an eminent need to reexamine topology within the context of non-Hermitian theories that describe open, lossy systems. The recent generalization of the Chern number to non-Hermitian Hamiltonians initiated this reexamination; however, there is so far no established connection between a non-Hermitian topological invariant and the qua…
We demonstrate that genuinely non-Hermitian topological phases and corresponding topological phase transitions can be naturally realized in monitored quantum circuits, exemplified by the paradigmatic non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model. We emulate this model by a 1D chain of spinless electrons evolving under unitary dynamics and subject to periodic measurements that are stochastically invoked. The non-Hermitian topology is visible in topological invariants adapted to the context of monitored circuits. For instance, the topological phase diagram of the monitored realization of the non-Herm…
The multipartite non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model is explored as a prototypical example of one-dimensional systems with several sublattice sites for unveiling intriguing insulating and metallic phases with no Hermitian counterparts. These phases are characterized by composite cyclic loops of multiple complex-energy bands encircling single or multiple exceptional points (EPs) on the parametric space of real and imaginary energy. We show the topology of these composite loops is similar to well-known topological objects like Möbius strips and Penrose triangles, and can be quantified by a …
We demonstrate that crystal defects can act as a probe of intrinsic non-Hermitian topology. In particular, in point-gapped systems with periodic boundary conditions, a pair of dislocations may induce a non-Hermitian skin effect, where an extensive number of Hamiltonian eigenstates localize at only one of the two dislocations. An example of such a phase are two-dimensional systems exhibiting weak non-Hermitian topology, which are adiabatically related to a decoupled stack of Hatano-Nelson chains. Moreover, we show that strong two-dimensional point-gap topology may also result in a dislocation r…
Higher-order topology realizes topologically robust corner modes as a manifestation of nontriviality. We theoretically propose non-Hermitian skin effects which stem from second-order topology of chiral-symmetric Hermitian systems. It is found that the skin modes are localized at the corners. We demonstrate two types of second-order topological skin effects by two-dimensional intrinsic and extrinsic second-order topology. The intrinsic second-order topological skin effect is characterized topologically by bulk inversion symmetry as well as chiral symmetry. Meanwhile, the extrinsic second-order …

Andreev bound states (ABSs) in hybrid semiconductor-superconductor nanowires can have near-zero energy in parameter regions where band topology predicts trivial phases. This surprising fact has been used to challenge the interpretation of a number of transport experiments in terms of non-trivial topology with Majorana zero modes (MZMs). We show that this ongoing ABS versus MZM controversy is fully clarified when framed in the language of non-Hermitian topology, the natural description for open quantum systems. This change of paradigm allows us to understand topological transitions and the emer…
We give a simple toy model to study a famous Jahn-Teller type molecule. Finite lifetime due to non-adiabatic coupling and finite temperature effect results in the effective Hamiltonian to be non-Hermitian. This effect pulls a conical intersection into a pair of connected Weyl points, bridged by a Fermi arc. The length of the Fermi arc depends on the strength of non-hermicity. This is a unique feature of non-Hermitian topology with no Hermitian analogue. We predict the existence of Weyl points in molecules which cause anomalous Jahn-Teller effects and fractional quantum number.
We show that two-dimensional non-Hermitian photonic crystals made of lossy material can exhibit non-trivial point gap topology in terms of topological winding in its complex frequency band structure. Such crystals can be either made of lossy isotropic media which is reciprocal, or lossy magneto-optical media which is non-reciprocal. We discuss the effects of reciprocity on the properties of the point gap topology. We also show that such a non-trivial point gap topology leads to non-Hermitian skin effect when the photonic crystal is truncated. In contrast to most previous studies on point gap t…
Topological phases of matter are classified based on their Hermitian Hamiltonians, whose real-valued dispersions together with orthogonal eigenstates form nontrivial topology. In the recently discovered higher-order topological insulators (TIs), the bulk topology can even exhibit hierarchical features, leading to topological corner states, as demonstrated in many photonic and acoustic artificial materials. Naturally, the intrinsic loss in these artificial materials has been omitted in the topology definition, due to its non-Hermitian nature; in practice, the presence of loss is generally consi…
Radiative damping is a strong dissipation source for the quantum emitters hybridized with propagating photons, electrons, or phonons, which is not easily avoidable for on-chip magnonic emitters as well that can radiate via the surface acoustic waves of the substrate. Here we demonstrate in an array of on-chip nano-magnets coupled in a long range via exchanging the surface acoustic waves that a point defect in the array, which can be introduced by the local magnon frequency shift by a local biased magnetic field or the absence of a magnetic wire, strongly localizes the magnons, in contrast to t…
We study non-Hermitian photonic lattices that exhibit competition between conservative and non-Hermitian (gain/loss) couplings. A bipartite sublattice symmetry enforces the existence of non-Hermitian flat bands, which are typically embedded in an auxiliary dispersive band and give rise to non-diffracting "compact localized states". Band crossings take the form of non-Hermitian degeneracies known as exceptional points. Excitations of the lattice can produce either diffracting or amplifying behaviors. If the non-Hermitian coupling is fine-tuned to generate an effective $π$ flux, the lattice spec…
Magnetic systems have been extensively studied both from a fundamental physics perspective and as building blocks for a variety of applications. Their topological properties, in particular those of excitations, remain relatively unexplored due to their inherently dissipative nature. The recent introduction of non-Hermitian topological classifications opens up new opportunities for engineering topological phases in dissipative systems. Here, we propose a magnonic realization of a non-Hermitian topological system. A crucial ingredient of our proposal is the injection of spin current into the mag…
Non-Hermitian skin effects and exceptional points are topological phenomena characterized by integer winding numbers. In this study, we give methods to theoretically detect skin effects and exceptional points by generalizing inversion symmetry. The generalization of inversion symmetry is unique to non-Hermitian systems. We show that parities of the winding numbers can be determined from energy eigenvalues on the inversion-invariant momenta when generalized inversion symmetry is present. The simple expressions for the winding numbers allow us to easily analyze skin effects and exceptional point…
We propose an anti-parity-time (anti-PT ) symmetric non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model, where the large non-Hermiticity constructively creates nontrivial topology and greatly expands the topological phase. In the anti-PT -symmetric SSH model, the gain and loss are alternatively arranged in pairs under the inversion symmetry. The appearance of degenerate point at the center of the Brillouin zone determines the topological phase transition, while the exceptional points unaffect the band topology. The large non-Hermiticity leads to unbalanced wavefunction distribution in the broken an…
In the band theory for non-Hermitian systems, the energy eigenvalues, which are complex, can exhibit non-trivial topology which is not present in Hermitian systems. In one dimension, it was recently noted theoretically and demonstrated experimentally that the eigenvalue topology is classified by the braid group. The classification of eigenvalue topology in higher dimensions, however, remained an open question. Here, we give a complete description of eigenvalue topology in two and three dimensional systems, including the gapped and gapless cases. We reduce the topological classification problem…
In spite of extensive works on the non-Hermitian topology, correlations effects remain crucial questions. We hereby analyze correlated non-Hermitian systems with special emphasis on the one-dimensional point-gap topology. Specifically, our analysis elucidates that correlations result in reduction of the topological classification $\mathbb{Z}\times \mathbb{Z} \to \mathbb{Z}$ for systems of one synthetic dimension with charge $\mathrm{U(1)}$ symmetry and spin-parity symmetry. Furthermore, we analyze an extended Hatano-Nelson chain which exhibits striking correlation effects; correlations destroy…
We investigate non-Hermitian elastic lattices characterized by non-local feedback control interactions. In one-dimensional lattices, we show that the proportional control interactions produce complex dispersion relations characterized by gain and loss in opposite propagation directions. Depending on the non-local nature of the control interactions, the resulting non-reciprocity occurs in multiple frequency bands characterized by opposite non-reciprocal behavior. The dispersion topology is also investigated with focus on winding numbers and non-Hermitian skin effect, which manifests itself thro…

Non-Hermitian topology is a recent hot topic in condensed matters. In this paper, we propose a novel platform drawing interdisciplinary attention: rock-paper-scissors (RPS) cycles described by the evolutionary game theory. Specifically, we demonstrate the emergence of an exceptional point and a skin effect by analyzing topological properties of their payoff matrix. Furthermore, we discover striking dynamical properties in an RPS chain: the directive propagation of the population density in the bulk and the enhancement of the population density only around the right edge. Our results open new a…
Non-Hermitian skin effect(NHSE) describes a unique non-Hermitian phenomenon that all eigen-modes are localized near the boundary, and has profound impact on a wide range of bulk properties. In particular, topological systems with NHSE have stimulated extensive research interests recently, given the fresh theoretical and experimental challenges therein. Here we propose a readily implementable scheme for achieving NHSE with band topology in ultracold gases. Specifically, the scheme realizes the one-dimensional optical Raman lattice with two types of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and an additional la…
Recently, there has been a lot of activity in the research field of topological non-Hermitian physics, partly driven by fundamental interests and partly driven by applications in photonics. However, despite these activities, a general classification and characterization of non-Hermitian Dirac models that describe the experimental systems is missing. Here, we present a systematic investigation of massive Dirac models on periodic lattices, perturbed by general non-Hermitian terms. We find that there are three different types of non-Hermitian terms. For each case we determine the bulk exceptional…
Among non-Hermitian systems, pseudo-Hermitian phases represent a special class of physical models characterized by real energy spectra and by the absence of non-Hermitian skin effects. Here, we show that several pseudo-Hermitian phases in two and three dimensions can be built by employing $q$-deformed matrices, which are related to the representation of deformed algebras. Through this algebraic approach we present and study the pseudo-Hermitian version of well known Hermitian topological phases, raging from two-dimensional Chern insulators and time-reversal-invariant topological insulators to …
We analyze a correlated system in equilibrium with special emphasis on non-Hermitian topology inducing a skin effect. The pseudo-spectrum, computed by the real-space dynamical mean-field theory, elucidates that additional pseudo-eigenstates emerge for the open boundary condition in contrast to the dependence of the density of states on the boundary condition. We further discuss how the line-gap topology, another type of non-Hermitian topology, affects the pseudo-spectrum. Our numerical simulation clarifies that while the damping of the quasi-particles induces the non-trivial point-gap topology…
Non-Hermiticity gives rise to unique topological phases that have no counterparts in Hermitian systems. Such intrinsic non-Hermitian topological phases appear even in one dimension while no topological phases appear in one-dimensional Hermitian systems. Despite the recent considerable interest, the intrinsic non-Hermitian topological phases have been mainly investigated in noninteracting systems described by band theory. It has been unclear whether they survive or reduce in the presence of many-body interactions. Here, we demonstrate that the intrinsic non-Hermitian topological phases in one d…
Non-Hermitian topological phases exhibit a number of exotic features that have no Hermitian counterparts, including the skin effect and breakdown of the conventional bulk-boundary correspondence. Here, we implement the non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) Hamiltonian, which is a prototypical model for studying non-Hermitian topological phases, with a solid-state quantum simulator consisting of an electron spin and a $^{13}$C nuclear spin in a nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in a diamond. By employing a dilation method, we realize the desired non-unitary dynamics for the electron spin and map …
Topological phases of Hermitian systems are known to exhibit intriguing properties such as the presence of robust boundary states and the famed bulk-boundary correspondence. These features can change drastically for their non-Hermitian generalizations, as exemplified by a general breakdown of bulk-boundary correspondence and a localization of all states at the boundary, termed the non-Hermitian skin effect. In this article, we present a completely analytical unifying framework for studying these systems using generalized transfer matrices -- a real-space approach suitable for systems with peri…
